>> i'm eric thomas. party leaders met in oakland this weekend for the upcoming midterm elections. >> carlos saucedo is in the newsroom with the political implications. carlos? two democrats are facing off in the general election. one is dianne feinstein. she has served in the senate since 1992 and is seeking her fifth term. for the second time in this campaign she's not getting her party support. >> state senator kevin de leon was greeted like a political rock star in oakland, especially after securing his party's backing for u.s. senate. >> i've inspired a lot of folks to think about what is possible. do we have the change that's needed to actually confront the issues that we're facing today? >> the board passed on incumbent senator dianne feinstein, opting to support de leon with 65% of the vote on saturda. >> we want someone who's going to be in the united states senate standing up for immigrants, standing up for the

lgbt community, people of colors, in a strident and forceful way. >> feinstein asked the party to stay neutral in the race. earlier this year, the candidates failed to get the backing by not capturing 60% of votes needed. feinstein got -- a professor at cal state east bay says this endorsement is part of a wave of support for people of color in politics. >> i think that you're seeing a more diverse, younger and more liberal group of people within the democratic party who are asserting their voices. >> de leon faces an uphill battle to face the incumbent. the feinstein campaign says they're confident they'll win this november. feinstein won by 2.1 million votes. and the endorsement comes with more than just bragging rights. it means the party will be spending more money to promote

de leon in the fall election. in the newsroom, carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. thank you very much. abc 7 news was in newark after an amtrak train hit a mini van at st. isabel avenue and cedar boulevard. the van's driver is in critical condition at a trauma center. the woman drove around the crossing gates as the train approached around 8:45 this morning. amtrak says nobody was hurt on board the san jose, the sacramento bound train. another train picked up 24 passengers after the crash. abc 7 news was in san francisco when they dealt with a hazardous treatment plant. a similar mishap took place on friday. fire crews sprayed cold water on the equipment until it cooled down. nobody was hurt. there was no hazard to the surrounding area, including the san francisco zoo and lake merced. >> new video shows damage by an early morning fire at 7-eleven

store in fremont. flames never spread to the interior of the store, the fire breaking out around 3:30 this morning. investigators believe someone may have set the fire. it took 20 minutes to bring it under control. nobody was hurt. anger on the south side on police footage of a -- the suspect reaching for a gun. richard cantu has details. outrage growing in chicago after a police officer shot and killed a black man on the city's south side. officers on foot patrol noticed a man they believed to be armed, now identified as 37-year-old harith augustus. >> when they approached him, he tried to push their hands away, started flailing and swinging away, trying to make his escape. and as he was making his escape, reached for his weapon. >> investigators did recover a gun at the scene. but witnesses are telling a different story. >> the officer got out of the

car and shot him seven times, end of story. >> the shooting sparking immediate protests that left four officers injured and led to several arrests. in a rare move the chicago police department releasing body cam footage less than 24 hours after the shooting. william callaway, an activist instrumental of getting video released of an unarmed teen, demanding change. >> we're tired and fed up. whether or not it's justified or not, they just don't understand. you're continuously killing us. you're killing us. >> the office of police accountability released a statement, saying they're committed to a thorough, objective and unbiased investigation and ask for the public's patience and koorngs. the officer involved has been placed on desk duty during the investigation. richard cantu, abc news, new york. a couple is describing tonight the moment when they found a woman who had been missing for a week along the monterey county coast.

sheriff's deputies used ropes to free angela hernandez from a cliff along highway 1. hernandez spent a week on the cliff after her car veered off the road. chad and chelsea moore were camping near the crash site. they discovered her jeep before seeing and hearing her. >> we turned around and angela was right there in the rocks, just looked like hell. she was happy at the same time. >> panicked with adrenaline. like, oh, my god, you were in that car we just saw and you're alive. >> hernandez told deputies her jeep went off the road when she swerved to avoid a rabbit. >> on the eve of his meeting with russian vladimir putin u.s. president donald trump called long-time european allies foes. he also said russia is a foe, "in certain respects." the summit is moving forward despite an outcry from the democrats. they want it cancelled after 12 russian military intelligence officers were indicted, accused of hacking in the 2016 election.
