this morning, we're not really sure what we're going to get, but the president is up tweeting and we're off to the races. waking up in helsinki, president trump joined the president of finland for breakfast this morning before his big day. wasting no time he tweeted this morning, our relationship with russia has never been worse thanks to many years of u.s. foolishness and stupidity and now the rigged witch-hunt. the summit with russian president vladimir putin starts with a one-on-one and their interpreters are the only additional bodies in the room. russian foreign minister sergey lavrov told russia today that that's the way the americans wanted it. with no published agenda and no stated objectives, the president told cbs news he is going in with an open mind. >> nothing bad is going to come out of it and maybe some good will come out, but i go in with low expectations. >> reporter: on his way to helsinki, he tempered expectations tweeting from air force one, no matter how well i do at the summit, i would return to criticism that it wasn't good enough. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: after the

department of justice indicted 12 russian agents last week, democrats called on trump to scrap the meeting saying they didn't trust trump to confront putin about russia's role in the 2016 election. president trump told reporters last week he'd ask putin if he meddled in the election. his national security adviser john bolton told abc news' jon karl that the indictments actually give trump some leverage. >> i think the president can put this on the table and say this is a serious matter. we need to talk about it. >> reporter: and also on the table will be ukraine, likely syria, but, again, we'll learn a whole lot more in just a few hours. linsey, kenneth. >> molly hunter, thank you. abc news will bring you live coverage of the president's news conference with vladimir putin this morning on air and on abc news app. we turn now to chicago and the growing outrage after the fatal police shooting of a popular barber. frustrated neighbors protested in the streets clashing with police, and more demonstrators are expected today. the chief of police looking to ease tensions has now released

body cam footage of the moments leading up to the shooting and abc's lynda lopez joins us with more. good morning, lynda. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. after protests that led to four officers being injured and led to several arrests, the police superintendent making the decision to release that body cam video saying it was because the community needed some answers about the shooting and because he wanted to try to prevent any future clashes. police releasing two versions of the body cam video. one version slowed down showing 37-year-old harith augustus' fatal encounter with police on chicago's south side. police are seen approaching augustus saying they believed he had a gun. police reach for augustus who pulls away and begins backing away toward the street. his shirt coming up to reveal what police say is a semiautomatic weapon near his waist. after he appears to put his hand near the gun, officers opened fire. police superintendent eddie johnson releasing the video after consulting with augustus' family and after mounting pressure. protesters taking immediately to the streets saturday where augustus was killed.

clashes between police and protesters leaving four injured. superintendent johnson saying he wanted to clear up any misinformation about the shooting but not saying if he believed the shooting was justified. >> you know, these things happen in a split second and officers have to make decisions quickly. they don't have the luxury of looking at video later. >> reporter: protesters are back on the streets after that body cam video was released in smaller numbers but still demanding answers. and we're learning more about the officer who fired those shots. he's still in his probationary period and he's now on desk duty which is standard protocol after a police involved shooting. kenneth. >> our thanks to lynda lopez there. thank you. in new mexico investigators are trying to determine what caused a chain reaction crash involving several vehicles and a tour bus. three people were killed including the driver of the car that hit a pickup truck. police say the bus driver then swerved to avoid hitting that car but flipped over and was hit by a semi truck.

dozens of people were injured. four are in critical condition. a key route into yosemite national park has been closed because of a wildfire burning out of control. the fire has burned nearly seven square miles of dry brush on the edge of the park forcing the evacuation of tourists in some rural communities. a firefighter was killed over the weekend when his bulldozer rolled over in the steep terrain. temperatures will be soaring on both the west and east coast today. let's check your forecast for this monday. good morning. heat builds in the northeast with the real feel near 100 in cincinnati, d.c., new york and that's going to be in addition to the scattered showers and thunderstorms that will kick through when the front pushes through. look for widespread scattered showers from atlanta down to tampa over towards new orleans to join us. neal reporputin, one-on-one.

now reporting from helsinki, george stephanopoulos. >> and we are back now live from helsinki where president trump's about to meet vladimir putin. that's the door. we see sarah sanders there, the white house press secretary, john bolton, the president's national security adviser waiting for that first handshake between vladimir putin and donald trump. their first summit meeting of the two presidents, of course, the white house now trying to say this is thought a summit. trying to downgrade it to just a meeting concerned about expectations here. the president has been trying to lower expectations as well. but, jon karl, as i was just saying to you the president congratulated him over the weekend. no word on those indictments of russian intelligence, congratulated him on the world cup. >> no word on that directly from the president and, george, the striking dichotomy her is from the president's national security team, you see -- you hear very strong words about russia, i interviewed his

national security adviser john bolton, who you see there just yesterday, he said these indictments strengthen the president's hand. he said that it is hard to believe that putin himself would not have known about russian -- about his own government's efforts to interfere in our presidential election and that he would strongly bring this up in the meeting but there is absolutely no indication from the president's own words that he is truly concerned about this, concerned about the russian side of this. he's lashing out at democrats. he's lashing out at robert mueller. but he is not criticizing vladimir putin. >> you've seen some republican, john mccain, ben sasse from nebraska saying he ought to cancel if he won't hold vladimir putin accountable. that's been picked up by democrats too, jon. >> democrats across the board are saying this meeting should have been canceled once that indictment dropped, once we saw its stark detail, exactly what

the russians did to interfere with the u.s. election. stark detail, what they did to hack into the emails of the democratic national committee and the clinton campaign. that's obviously not going to happen. so now the question is, will the president directly bring this up in the meeting and as we've heard from his advisers that is supposedly on the agenda. one real area of concern here is that this first meeting is going to happen as you mentioned one-on-one, the two presidents, trump and putin alone with just translators. none of the president's national security -- >> which has so many -- and we are about to see the presidents right there.

things to talk about. we have discussions on everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear to china. we'll be talking a little about china, our mute wand friend president xi. i think we have great opportunities together as two countries to frankly we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years. i've been here not too long but it's getting close to two years but i think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship. i'm sure you've heard over the years and as i campaign that getting along with russia is a good thing not a bad thing.

[ translating ] and i really think the world wants to see us get along. we are the two great nuclear powers. we have 90% of the nuclear and that's not a good thing, it's a bad thing and i think we hopefully can do something about that because it's not a positive force, it's a negative force so we'll be talking about that among other things.

closed doors one on one just translators for the first part of this all day meeting in helsinki, finland. pretty remarkable comments there from president trump starting it out. the two big events, the indictment of 12 russian nationals for interferiing in or election and france winning the world cup. he chose to congratulate him and did not mention russian meddling in our elections. >> reporter: he did not. he promises he will but this is a sign of just how seriously president trump wants to rebuild the relationship with moscow. most u.s. presidents have come to meetings with russian or soviet leaders speaking for the west, speaking for what used to be called the free world with the nations of europe and many other nations at their back having heft in those discussions because it wasn't just the american president. america first sometimes maybe means america alone in that room because president trump spent the last several days pushing back against the european union

and other close allies and so here he is clearly bothet on s common terms they can start work on their agenda which includes syria and ukraine and nuclear disarmament, that's close to president trump's heart and maybe somewhere on that list the 2016 election and what president trump's own director of national intelligence, dan coats, says the united states is under attack now, present tense, continued russian cyberattacking of american voters in american elections. >> maybe hearing more about that at the joint press conference with both leaders later. one of the reasons europeaning so wary, not only that tough nato meeting last week but another tweet from the president over the weekend where he referred to the european union as a foe. tara palmeri has been covering that for us and that has so many european leaders anxious, tara. >> reporter: that's right, george. the european officials i spoke to this morning said they were shocked and outraged. it's unheard of for an american

president to compare the european uon to russia and china. especially here in the baltic region they are extremely, extremely anxious as there's russian military operations happening all the time in the sea behind me in finland and they just want to make sure that president trump doesn't give any concessions to russia pugs -- publicly or privately. they see their own security linked to that in ukraine and want to make sure they can rely on u.s. military and nato forces to protect them. >> okay, tara, thanks. david muir here with me also. we want to go back to that footage we saw of the president and president putin there and, david, i was struck by the body language of the two men as we watched them in those minutes right there. president trump leaning forward in his seat, a very laid back vladimir putin kind of taking in everything the president had to say. >> yeah, very different body language from both of them. youmpgo
