trump supporters are lashing out. some claiming the president sided with the enemy. >> including today's "wall street journal," which calls the summit with putin a personal and national embarrassment that's part of a trump first doctrine. >> and leon panetta, the former cia director under president obama, calls it probably the most tragic day in the history of the presidency. but the president does have his defenders. we'll get to washington for that side of the story in a moment. >> but first the new interview with vladimir putin released overnight. >> translator: i really wish for your american listeners to listen to what i say. >> reporter: in an interview that quickly turned tense, fox news' chris wallace confronted vladimir putin on interfering with the u.s. election. putin refused to look at a copy of robert mueller's indictment which charges 12 russian intelligence officers with hacking into democrats' emails. >> you smile. let me finish. they say that these units were specifically involved in hacking

into democratic party computers, stealing information and spreading it to the world to try to disrupt the american election. may i give this to you to look at, sir? here? >> reporter: the russian president goes on to deny any meddling. >> translator: russia as a state has never interfered with the internal affairs of the united states, let alone its elections. do you really believe that someone from the russian territory could have influenced the united states and influenced the choice of millions of americans? >> i'm not asking whether they influenced. i'm asking whether they tried. >> translator: i'm about to answer. this was the first point that i'm trying to make. if you'll have some patience, you'll hear the entire response. >> reporter: wallace continued to grill putin as the russian

leader grew visibly angry. >> translator: if you don't like my answer, you can give me straightaway and i'll just keep silent, and if you want americans to listen to my opinion, could you please wait for a little bit? >> reporter: the interview comes amid the bipartisan backlash following monday's news conference in helsinki where president trump seemed to side with the russian president over his own intelligence agencies. >> president putin denied having anything to do with the election interference. every u.s. intelligence agency has concluded that russia did. who do you believe? >> my people came to me, dan coats and others did, they said, they think it's russia. i have president putin. he just said it's not russia. i will say this, i don't see any reason why it would be. i have great confidence in my intelligence people, but i will tell you that president putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. >> reporter: president trump sat down with fox news' sean hannity

immediately after the news conference once again insisting the mueller investigation is to blame for poor relations between washington and moscow. >> but i'll tell you that i thought it was a really amazing time. not about that, i think it's a shame we're talking about nuclear proliferation and we're talking about syria and humanitarian aid. we're talking about all these different things, and we get questions on the witch-hunt. >> reporter: as many lawmakers condemn the president's statements, the usually reserved russian foreign minister sergey lavrov was clearly jubilant describing the summit as fabulous and better than super. but the president's own director of national intelligence who declared just last week that the u.s. remains under attack by russia targeting the 2018 elections held firm saying we have been clear in our assessments of russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy. former cia director john brennan even called trump's appearance with putin nothing short of treasonous. overnight the president in his first on camera comments since the summit struck back against

brennan and the obama administration. >> i think brennan is a very bad guy, and if you look at it, a lot of things happened under his watch. i think he's a very bad person. >> and president trump said that he has confidence in the u.s. intelligence agencies but said to build a brighter future, we cannot exclusively focus on the past. >> senator rand paul is coming to the president's defense as other senators including many republicans are voicing anger. abc's kenneth moton continues our coverage from washington. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, diane. the reaction here in washington was immediate, even republicans are going in on president trump. let me show you senator ben sasse released a statement saying, this is bizarre and flat out wrong. senator john mccain called the news conference with vladimir putin, quote, one of the most disgraceful performances by an american president in memory and the senate foreign relations committee said his comments made the u.s. look like a pushover. >> it was not a good day for our country and a very good day for him.

i don't think president trump gained anything. >> i thought it was shameful and i never thought i'd see an american president throw the intelligence community under the bus like that. >> reporter: even ardent trump supporters are denouncing his comments. arkansas senator tom cotton said russia's aggressions are, quote, not the actions of a friend or ally, and newt gingrich tweeting, the summit is the most serious mistake of trump's presidency. it must be corrected immediately but as we mention at least one gop lawmaker is defending trump this morning, kentucky senator rand paul expresses approval saying it's important for the u.s. to have open dialogue with its adversaries adding new progress can be made in syria and on fighting terrorism. paul downplayed russian meddling in the u.s. election saying any country that can meddle in foreign elections does. diane. >> all right, kenneth moton for us. live in d.c., thanks, kenneth. there are some others who will calling it a victory. the russians. abc's patrick reevell covers russia for us and is monitoring

their reaction. >> just overwhelmingly positive in russia. they feel that vladimir putin came away from that summit an obvious winner because ultimately he went there and came back with more or less more than he could possibly hope for with an american president basically agreeing with russia's perspective on many issues and accepting this narrative they've been pushing for years that the u.s. is actually also very much to blame for the current very poor relations that have existed between russia and the u.s. and so back home in russia they're very pleased with it. and back here in the u.s., a 29-year-old russian activist is in custody in washington accused of being a secret agent of the kremlin. justice department prosecutors say maria butina worked to infiltrate the u.s. organizations including the nra in order to establish back channel communications with american politicians and advance the russian agenda. her lawyer calls the allegations overblown. let's turn our focus to the rising temperatures in the west fueling several major wildfires

so, this was weird. here's what's not to do on a drawbridge. a woman on a bike there ignoring the signs near green bay, wisconsin, and peddling right through the gap as the bridge was about to be raised. she's okay. bystanders eventually rescued her and the bridge operator was notified. she suffered only minor injuries in that fall. more than a thousand survivors of last year's las vegas mass shooting are now facing lawsuits from the hotel where it happened. mgm resorts is suing to make sure it's not held liable for the massacre which left 59 people dead. the company owns the concert venue and the mandalay bay hotel where the shooter carried out the attack from his room. the company is citing a 2002 law

claiming it's protected from liability for that attack because it used anti-terrorism technology as part of its security protocol. police in the houston area have launched a manhunt for a suspected serial killer. they say jose gilberto rodriguez is responsible for the murders of three people and the wounding of a fourth person all since friday. two of the victims were killed at a mattress store. rodriguez is a registered sex offender who was released on parole last fall. authorities say he cut off his ankle monitoring bracelet and may be driving a gray nissan sentra. amazon is calling its fourth annual prime day a success but it didn't exactly get off to a smooth start. after heavy traffic apparently crashed amazon's servers, many wanna be shoppers instead were greeted with images of dogs and the words, uh-oh, something went wrong on our end. but amazon tells the appreciated press the glitch was fixed and it was still first hour sales higher this year than last year. meanwhile, "forbes" magazine says jeff bezos has just become

we're back with that new video of the terrifying moments when a so-called lava bomb exploded out of the kilauea volcano in hawaii crashing down onto a boat full of tourists. in fact, nearly two dozen people were injured by that massive lava, which was about the size of a basketball. >> one of those victims is now in serious condition. abc's will carr has more. >> reporter: watch this fiery explosion caught on camera. >> wow. >> reporter: in the ocean next to the big island, the blast raining lava bombs the size of basketballs down on a nearby tour boat. a massive rock ripping a hole through the roof injuring 23 people. >> it actually exploded about 300 yards in the air. particles of the lava actually landed on the vessel. >> it just exploded straight out at the boat. we could hear the rocks hit the boat and people yelling. >> primarily soft tissue injuries. there was one obvious femur fracture. >> reporter: authorities in hawaii have set up a safety zone in the ocean around the disaster

to protect residents and tourists. the kilauea volcano first erupted in early may. rivers of lava destroying more than 700 homes since, and from the air, you can see a tiny new island, now a peninsula, formed from lava flowing under water. the coast guard is now investigating after a terrifying experience. in los angeles, will carr, abc news. a health alert about the overuse of antibiotics. a new study is raising concern about practices at urgent care centers. the study found nearly half of people who seek treatment at walk-in clinics for symptoms of a cold or flu walk out with an antibiotic as compared to only 24% of people who enter hospital emergency rooms with the same symptoms. another olympic sport is facing a sexual abuse scandal. a class action lawsuit claims the usa diving organization ignored or obstructed sexual abuse allegations. the lawyer in the case claims the accusations are worse than those made against usa

for several hours we also had the ramp to westbound 92 shut down, but they were able to reopen that. now it's just the connector from 101 to eastbound 92 closed. the rig caught fire and they had trouble getting that uprighted. let's get to matt keller on the scene. what's the latest, matt? >> yes, this ramp from 101 to 92, eastbound 92, is still closed and there's no estimate when this is going to reopen. a lot of crews. caltrans. chp, the truck is around the corner and also two tow trucks on the ramp. first calls came in after 10:30 last night. this box truck was carrying 80,000 pounds of produce when it overturned. the truck was the only vaek involved in the crash. the driver was not injured. sparks started a fire in the marsh below. the truck was never on fire.

the fire down below is now out. a big problem, how heavy this truck is. one heavy duty tow truck already had a line snap. now they have two tow trucks out here and they're going to try to lift it together. reporting live in san mateo, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. happening today, tour buses could officially be banned outside the full house house in san francisco. the board of directors will decide whether to ban the buses from brodrick street between pine and bush. that's where the fictional tanner family lived in the '90s sitcom. the proposal would impact commercial vehicles with nine or more seats. the goal is to keep traffic moving on the busy street. more people have been visiting since fuller house debuted on netflix two years ago. >> london breed's replacement on the board of supervisors is on the job. she appointed valley brown as her successor.
