to clarify his remarks. >> and last night he appeared to shift the blame for the backlash tweeting that his meeting with vladimir putin was a great success except in the fake news media. abc's kenneth moton joins us from washington with more. good morning, kenneth. >> reporter: good morning, guys. it's the walk back being heard around the world. but there's still confusion this morning about whether or not president trump truly believes u.s. intelligence about russian meddling. this morning, new details about president trump's russia reversal. >> i have full faith in our intelligence agencies. whoops. they just turred off the light. that must be the intelligence agencies. there it goes. okay. >> reporter: after that interesting moment, sources shedding some light on what led the president to backtrack on his answer in helsinki about russia election meddling. >> i have president putin, he just said it's not russia. i will say this, i don't see any reason why it would be. >> reporter: reading from prepared remarks, trump said he misspoke.

>> i said the word would instead of wouldn't. the sentence should have been, i don't see any reason why it wouldn't be russia. >> reporter: abc news has learned the president came up with that clarification after bipartisan condemnation as he appeared to side with vladimir putin over the u.s. intelligence community. >> the russians need to know that there are a lot of us who fully understand what happened in 2016 and it really better not happen again in 2018. >> reporter: on the trump walk back -- >> i don't accept the president's comments today. if he wanted to make those comments, he should have had the strength to make them in front of vladimir putin. >> reporter: but the attempted cleanup muddied even more when trump said he accepts russia interfered, but others may also be to blame. >> could be other people also, a lot of people out there. there was no collusion at all. >> reporter: democrats are now fired up more than ever demanding top trump officials and even the u.s. translator

inside that trump/putin meeting testify in front of congress about what was discussed. diane and kendis. >> kenneth moton live from d.c. for us, thank you. and those prepared remarks that the president made at the white house yesterday were apparently altered at the last minute. a close-up view shows a black marker was used to add the sentence, there was no collusion. farther down the same page a line that said, those who meddled in the election will be brought to justice, was apparently crossed out using that same black marker. prosecutors are increasing the pressure on a gun activist with ties to the nra who is accused of working as a secret russian agent. 29-year-old mariia butina has now been indicted on two charges including acting as an agent of the russian government. if convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison. her lawyer calls the charges overblown. and this morning a search resumes in florida after two small planes collided over the evergrades. at least three people were killed. another victim is missing. the planes are reportedly owned by a flight school that has suffered three deadly crashes in the past.

the cause of the crash is under investigation. and now to a major development in the scandal surrounding papa john's pizza. a lawyer for the company's founder now says john schnatter will not leave without a fight. he claims the board of directors did not have the authority to force him to resign as chairman after he used the "n" word during a conference call. schnatter says his comment was taken out of context and he was actually just saying he wouldn't work with kanye west as a spokesman because he uses the "n" word in his lyrics. he says he later used the actual word but only to criticize a competitor for usings term. last week he accused the marketing firm of trying to blackmail papa john's. we turn to the severe weather from coast to coast. wildfires on the west coast are forcing more people to flee their homes. on the east they're recovering right now from strong storms and flash flooding. a soaking storm for millions of americans from maryland to maine. major roads like the fdr drive in new york city overwhelmed by the rain. in northern virginia, more than 20 cars are left stranded on the

george washington parkway with water coming up to the doors. first responders rush in on boats trying to rescue more than 40 people including this family. in new england, the heavy rains buried cars in worcester and forced traffic to a crawl. the weather canceling more than 1,500 flights and delaying 4,000. the storm dumping up to 3 inches of rain in just an hour turning subways into waterways from new york to d.c. and packing some dangerous lightning including a strike on this church in new hampshire. it lit the steeple on fire. >> i was the first one to arrive here, and there were flames shooting about 75 feet out of the top of the church. nobody was in the church at the time. all the calls came from our neighbors. >> reporter: on the west coast, the hot and dry conditions fueling this wildfire near yosemite national park. the fire is now surrounding this motel, which has been evacuated and a key route into the park is

now closed. the wildfire one of several burning across the state has already killed a firefighter. abc's clayton sandell is there. >> this is hot, sweaty work, and because they can't fly in smoky conditions like this, it's the boots on the ground right now that are making the biggest difference in this firefight. >> reporter: in oregon more evacuations in wasco county where this wildfire has burned several homes. and the conditions are expected to remain hot and dry on the west coast. let's take a closer look at your forecast for this wednesday. good morning. the heat expands in the southwest to phoenix up towards salt lake with temperatures in the upper 90s. we're looking for record challenging heat and dangerous heat in boise, great falls but cooler along the coast. now, we're looking for a chance of thunderstorms and severe storms from sioux falls to omaha along 29, 90 as well as 80 with damaging winds and flooding and widespread thunderstorms throughout the entire southeast for wednesday. by late week another round of storms in the ohio valley region and the southeast but dry in the

we're back with the dramatic new video of a vintage airplane crashing in south africa. a passenger inside shooting this video as flames came out of the engine during the sightseeing trip. the plane was brushing the treetops as the pilot tried to

stay in the air. the video goes to black. you can hear it there. that's the moment of impact right there. and then it shows the chaos in the cabin just after the crash. the plane crashed into a dairy plant near pretoria. the flight engineer and a worker on the ground were killed. both pilots remain in a coma. las vegas police are investigating the actions of two officers involved in a deadly shootout on a busy street. one officer's body camera shows him in pursuit of two shooting suspects. he opens fire through his windshield after someone in the suv shoots at him. that suv then rolls into an elementary school. one suspect escapes and the other suspect was shot and killed. abc's matt gutman spoke with former fbi counterterrorism official steve gomez about whether the officer's actions were justified. >> you're whether your life is in danger, whether the public's life is in danger. you could just see they just

threw something out of the suburban, and now he made the decision to move even closer to the suburban, which was an incredibly brave move on the officer's part. this is not necessarily advisable to be shooting at moving vehicles, especially if you're in a moving vehicle, but sometimes circumstances warrant. >> las vegas police say it is within policy for an officer in a moving vehicle to fire on another vehicle if he believes someone's life is threatened. walmart is reportedly considering launching its own streaming video service to compete with netflix. the website theinformation.com reports the service would cost about $8 a month, which is less than netflix and amazon. no word what kind of programming walmart would offer. a bear scare triggered a neighborhood lockdown in los angeles. this black bear kept wildlife officials on their toes as it santa tered through several backyards and eventually wanted a place to get cool. took a dip in somebody's pool. wildlife officials say the bear was just looking to escape the heat for a little while. it was eventually tranquilized and released back into the wilderness.

chunk of lava came smashing into the roof of their tour boat. they and others on the boat were trying to get what they thought would be a safe view of the erupting kilauea volcano, but instead they found themselves in the line of a violent explosion. >> actually sitting at the bottom of the boat after it hit and it was still glowing. >> reporter: a family trying to catch a glimpse of lava got a much closer look than they hoped for. cell phone video shows the moment a so-called lava bomb exploded crashing down onto a boat full of tourists in hawaii. among them, the li family of redlands, california. >> i immediately got on the ground and covered my neck. >> reporter: christopher li suffered second and third-degree burns to his legs.my sister that this seems a little close and then it exploded. >> it's hot. it's steamy. >> reporter: dawn li says it was literally raining lava. >> it definitely -- we felt like we were in peril. >> yes. >> reporter: luckily for everyone on board, dawn is a nurse and her husband a doctor.

>> i used to be a trauma surgeon at usc, and i've seen a lot of things. this was just crazy. >> reporter: 13 people were taken to the hospital including a woman listed in serious condition. >> we just sort of stabilized her hip with life preservers so that there was no more movement. >> reporter: dawn held on to the piece of lava rock that hit her but she decided to throw it into the ocean after thinking more about how the experience could have been deadly. >> i thought for a moment that that was it. this is how it's going to go, and it was a terrifying moment. >> the captain of that lava tour boat has been sued at least four times in the past by passengers who claimed they were injured on his tours. a hiker in washington state is recovering after plunging more than 300 feet off the side of mt. saint helens. brittany fintel lost her footing on the snow and ice and then fell crashing into boulder after boulder before finally coming to a stop. it took rescuers some five hours to airlift her to safety, but

her german shepherd was the first to reach her. >> he made sure i wasn't in shock. he, you know, laid beside me. he licked me. he was extremely comforting. >> well, fintel suffered a broken hip and a concussion. she admits she underestimated the mountain and did not have the proper equipment for the climb. we're learning some new details about a new jersey beachgoer impaled by a beach umbrella. margaret reynolds was in sea side heights on the jersey shore when a gust of wind drove the aluminum stake through her ankle. rescue crews had to use a bolt cutter to remove the umbrella before rushing her to the hospital. you may recall some video from three years ago during a storm in maryland sent these umbrellas flying prompting warnings from authorities. one woman seriously was injured in a separate incident. she says many people just don't realize the risk. >> the wind picked it straight up in the air, and it shot it right back down, and it went right into my thigh.

luckily someone on the beach was also watching and tried to catch the umbrella for me. >> as for margaret reynolds, she is reportedly doing well after surgery. turning to sports and some late night drama at baseball's all-star game. the game went into extra innings when the national league hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth no less. and then on to the tenth we go and two of the houston astros hit solo home runs and the american league took the lead for good winning, 8-6. the teams combined for ten home runs, which is an all-star game record. meanwhile, all-star manny machado may have played his last game for the orioles. multiple reports say the orioles are close to trading him to the dodgers. up next in "the pulse," some disappointing news for fans of "full house." also ahead, the entire town in california that was just sold and what the buyer plans to do with it. plus, the sign language interpreter who stole the show at a concert.
