trying to meddle as we prepare for the 2018 midterm election. but president trump sparked more confusion after abc news asked him point blank about russian interference. this morning, president trump's head-spinning position on russian meddling.>> no, you dono be the case? >> reporter: the president once again appearing to contradict his own intelligence chiefs. >> russia attempted to interfere with the last election and then it continues to engage and malign influence, operations to this day. >> reporter: that stunning moment at the white house traveled quickly to capitol hill. >> if he really believes russia is not interfering in our 2018 election, i'm dumbfounded by that statement. >> reporter: press secretary sarah sanders worked to clarify. >> the president said thank you very much and was saying no to answering questions. >> reporter: it's the second clarification this week after the president appeared to side with vladimir putin in helsinki. they met behind closed doors for two hours. >> what did you say to him? >> very strong on the fact that we can't have meddling. we can't have any of that. >> reporter: "the new york times" reports two weeks before

trump's inauguration he was shown highly classified intelligence that putin ordered complex cyberattacks to sway the 2016 election. trump telling cbs news he believes u.s. intelligence but -- >> is putin lying to you? >> i don't want to get into whether or not he's lying. i can only say that i do have confidence in our intelligence agencies. >> reporter: the president's comments now are quite different than what he said as he stood next to putin monday. this is why lawmakers are still demanding the u.s. translator in that trump/putin meeting testify and hand over any notes to congress. diane and kendis. >> kenneth moton live for us from d.c. thanks, kenneth. a federal judge has ordered a gun activist with ties to the nra held without bail. she's accused of working as a secret russian agent. and now prosecutors are revealing how she allegedly used sex in her covert plan to cozy up to american politicians. the indictment for mariia butina reads like a spy novel.

the government claims she was willing to go to extreme measures to infiltrate the u.s. political system and the nra. prosecutors accuse the 29-year-old of offering sex in exchange for a position inside an undisclosed special interest organization. one of her alleged russian contacts joked in one message about her high profile in the united states saying you've upstaged anna chapman. she poses with toy pistols while you are being published with the real ones, a reference to another redheaded russian arrested for spying in 2010. investigators say butina was involved in a personal relationship with an unidentified american who was instrumental in aiding her covert influence operation. and now there's growing questions about this moment at a 2015 conference when she asked then candidate trump about russia. >> do you want to continue the politics of sanctions? >> i believe i would get along very nicely with putin, okay. and i mean where we have the strength. i don't think you'd need the sanctions. >> reporter: during her time in

the u.s. the fbi claims butina was reaching out to politicians and those in power and sources say she met the president's son don junior at an nra convention and while allegedly receiving funding from a russian oligarch and maintaining contact with russian intelligence officials like the one prosecutors claim can be seen in this picture. the charges against her are not part of special counsel robert mueller's investigation. but officials say butina's case is reflective of how broad and deep ongoing russian infiltration efforts have been. this morning, butina is held without bail after prosecutors argued she is a flight risk accusing her of packing boxes and sending money to russia days befores her arrest. she's pleaded not guilty and due back in court next tuesday. we have some breaking news from central california. a tent collapse at a military base has injured nearly two dozen people. military officials say wind from a landing helicopter was so strong, it blew the tent over. ci for t oactivett has been

and reserve armed forces troops. two beaches popular near the new york city area may be closed again today after two apparent shark attacks. the 12 and 13-year-old victims were playing in the water just a few miles apart. no sharks were seen in the area at the time. but later this shark was caught nearby. now authorities are trying to figure out if a tooth found in one of the victim's wounds is a match. both children who were injured say it all happened very quickly. >> when i felt it bite my leg, it wasn't sharp, it was kind of a shock feeling because it was really quick. it was like one second it went like that and just let go immediately. >> i saw something next to me and i kind of felt pain and i looked and saw like a fin kind of. >> despite their wounds both children were able to walk before being taken to the hospital. the attacks happened off fire island where the lifeguard says there's been no shark attacks in recent history. now to the deadly wildfires in the west. more than 100 fires are now burning in southern oregon alone

with more evacuations ordered overnight. and in the northern part of that state, authorities found one man dead near a burned out tractor and they believe he was using the tractor to create a fire line hoping to stop the blaze. then to california, the wildfire burning near yosemite national park is making air quality hazardous. at times the smoke so thick, planes can't fly. now let's take a look at your weather for this thursday morning. beaches from santa monica to malibu have re-opened after a rare lightning storm forced evacuations from all coastal areas. the national weather service says monsoon moisture could bring more thunderstorms to southern california through tomorrow. looking at today's high temperatures, low 80s in southern california, triple digits again in phoenix and dallas, low 90s in new orleans and chicago. most of the east coast is looking at the 80s today. washington, d.c., just under 90.

we're back with another fire at this food plant that makes tortilla chips in austin, texas, the second fire there in just a week. the fire crews are blaming spontaneous combustion and say the waste left over from making the chips simply burst into flames. maybe the chips are just a little too hot and spicy. facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg has sparked a firestorm of his own saying the website would not automatically ban holocaust deniers.

during an interview he said he finds holocaust deniers deeply offensive but does not believe material denying the holocaust should automatically be banned from the site. after some criticism, he tried to clarify those comments saying he didn't mean to defend the intent of holocaust deniers. he said offensive material is not removed from facebook unless the company determines it could lead to violence. another big city is cracking down on soda to try to fight obesity. this time baltimore has banned soda and other sugary drinks from the kids' menu in restaurants. civic leaders say one in every three teenagers in baltimore is obese. pennsylvania, in the meantime, the state's highest court has upheld philadelphia's tax on soda. it charges an extra cent and a half per ounce. california's supreme court has ordered a proposal to divide california into three separate states be removed from november's ballot. supporters of the measure want to carve up the state because they say california's government is too big to properly serve the people.

14-year-old adul dreamed about while trapped in the cave hoping to be rescued. he says every night before going to sleep, he got on his knees. and here in the small baptist church he grew up in, it seems his and so many others' prayers were answered. ♪ hallelujah this is the end of a big celebration here and the boys all over this area, their families are welcoming home. it's just such an extraordinary atmosphere. those 12 young boys separated from their families stuck in a dank, dark cave for almost three weeks finally going home. tea swarmed by his relatives, sleepy. but strong. >> hello. how are you? you're happy. >> yeah. >> how are you feeling? >> great to see those smiles and the boys say they actually tried to dig their way out of the cave. they say they dug a tunnel about 12 feet long before the rescuers found them. >> wow. that mom might still be hugging her son this morning. and in health news, doctors are sounding the alarm about the rising number of young adults dying from liver disease and binge drinking is getting a lot of the blame. in the last decade deaths from cirrhosis rose by about 10% every year among people 25 to 34 years of age. doctors say millennials are drinking more and they drinking more potent types of alcohol. a new study finds eating dinner early could refuse your risk of developing some cancers. researchers in spain found men who ate dinner at least two hours before going to sleep had a 26% lower risk for prostate cancer compared to those who ate right before bed. they also found women with the same dining pattern had a 16% lower risk for breast cancer. a woman in southern california is recovering from a bee attack that nearly took her life. the 54-year-old housekeeper was attacked by so-called killer bees suffering at least 200 stings.

following distance and drive for conditions. hearing you barely can see ten feet in front of you as you cross the bridge. use a lot of caution this morning. i also have the visibility layer from live doppler 7 on our traffic maps. quite a bit of fog in the north bay, santa rosa and north along the 101 corridor. a day you want to give yourself extra time heading through those areas. we will head out to the central valley coming up next. developing news, nearly two dozen soldiers are recovering after an accident at a military base in monterey county. >> wind from a helicopter cuss caused a tent to collapse at fort hunter liggett, about an hour northwest of san luis obispo. most of the 22 injuries are minor but four were taken to hospitals. the accident occurred during an annual training exercise for thousands of army, navy, air force, army national guard, army reserve and canadian armed forces troops. police are trying to figure out what caused an explosion at

a kaiser medical office in santa rosa. >> left one man injured, many with rattled nerves and miles of traffic backup. abc 7 news reporter kate larson has details. >> reporter: clouds continue to seep from the tanker truck that exploded behind things kaiser medical office. >> we felt the building shook. >> reporter: sky 7 overhead after the explosion. it was 2:30 and the building on old redwood highway in santa rosa was full of patients and employees like registered nurse henning. >> my first thought is oh, my god it's a terrorist attack. >> we had the potential for another explosion. >> reporter: santa rosa assistant fire marshal said the explosion caused a small brush fire and worrisome gas leak. directions and way evacuated two kaiser offices while the hazmat team secured the majority of the leak. >> we kept getting pushed farther away from the building. >> reporter: kathy larson is a physical therapist and works in the back of the building near
