passengers flips over, caught in the middle of a lake during powerful thunderstorms. >> poor guys. oh, my, gosh. oh, my gosh. >> oh, no. >> oh, no. >> reporter: you can see the boat struggling to navigate as waves hit it from every direction. onlookers watching the horror from a nearby dinner cruise on table rock lake near branson, missouri. at the time, reports of winds exceeding more than 60 miles per hour. a second vessel, also a duck boat, seen fighting through the turbulent waters as it makes its way back to safety. but the conditions too much to bear for this vessel. at 7:00 p.m. central emergency responders notified that the boat has capsized tossing 31 passengers, including several children, into the water. >> i need a water rescue. will be north of the showboat. will be a duck that has capsized. >> reporter: divers called in to try to rescue passengers fighting to stay alive. >> i believe it was caused by the weather, yes. so this is going to be all night into tomorrow we're still going to be working on this.

>> reporter: tone to tony burkhart who was supposed to be a passenger took this video. the windy conditions were present and he and his wife decided not to board. the dinner cruise where so many watched the disaster turning into a triage area. >> we're trying to dive more missing people. >> reporter: the boat company that operated the vessel telling abc news this incident has deeply affected all of us. we'll continue to do all we can to assist the families involved and the authorities as they continue with the search and rescue. the sheriff in charge of the investigation say there were life jackets on board. it's unclear how many people were wearing them. the death toll is high because besides the rain, wind and pounding waves you have to take into account the panic on board.

robin, it's frightening even watching that video knowing it was full of passengers including children. >> it really is, tom. thank you. joining us is trent behr and his girlfriend allison lester who were on the scene when the boat went down and did everything they could to help. we really appreciate both of you joining us this morning. trent, can you start us off by telling -- describing what you saw, what you experienced. >> yeah, i can do that. so, when we showed up to the boat, we got on to the boat. it was windy. it started to pick up some wind. and we decided to take a little tour kind of look around, where we were going to be eating and stuff. and we actually looked out a window and we saw the two duck boats kind of struggling in the water and that's when allison said, wow, we should take a video of this or at least take a picture or something. so we took the video. we got back to our seat. and it was maybe two minutes later, and we actually heard the captain say that the boat flipped, or the boat is sinking, so all of the staff -- all of

the waiters, waitresses, that may be on our showboat, actually grabbed life jackets, aeds, running up and down the aisles, helping as much as they could. they did an excellent job trying to get together. we decided, okay, we just can't stand here anymore. we need to go help. so we went to the front of the boat and a lot of the staff was kind of at the front and the captain was kind of signaling some other ships to come around and got some people who were in the water picked up in a boat. and then he went off to help someone else and as we were there, we saw what was a green purse kind of float by and then eventually we actually saw a young lady who was laying in the water. at that point, i actually ran down the stairs, because we were on the second level, and helping other passengers who jumped in the lake to help save her, as well as other staff members who got -- who went in the water. >> oh, bless your heart. >> we eventually did pull her up.

thank you. we did eventually pull her up onto the boat. she was unconscious. we -- i was about ready to start cpr, and the emt did show up at that time. >> i know you were doing everything you could. allison, a lot of people are wondering was it a storm that came up suddenly? or had the weather been bad all day? what was the weather conditions that day? >> today, it was actually really nice day out. it was really hot and the weather seemed nice and sunny when we got to the boat and as we were getting -- loading on to the show boat that's when the weather picked up and the wind really picked up bad. and debris was flying up everywhere. and just the waves were really rough. so it was just suddenly and out of nowhere. >> out of nowhere like that. trent and allison, thank you very much for your time and no one ever knows what they'll do or how they'll react when they see a situation like that. and to know that you did everything you could to be of assistance. so thank you very much to you both. take care. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> amy?

more wicked weather to talk about, robin. we'll turn to those tornadoes tearing through the heartland leaving so much destruction behind injuring multiple people, knocking buildings down, even damaging a hospital in iowa. abc's marcus moore is there in hard-hit marshalltown. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: amy, good morning. we are in the city's historic downtown, where buildings have crumbled. the city's clock tower is still standing. the winds were so strong last night they sheared off the top of it. even more evidence of the storm's awesome power. look at the brick building nearby. the roof has been ripped away. there is a gaping hole in the side of that building, again, it's brick. it's one of the many battered and beaten buildings here in the storm. and below, this pile of heavy debris. this storm packed a real punch. >> oh, my god. this is terrible. >> what are we witnessing? >> reporter: panic across the midwest. >> is it coming this way? >> reporter: now more than two dozen tornados reported in iowa.

>> honey, get inside. there just went a house. >> reporter: the fierce winds knocking down this courthouse tower with ease. >> ooh. >> reporter: the city of marshalltown, declaring a state of emergency. gray clouds gloom over as the storm chaser drives within feet of the twister. >> no, no, no. oh, man. >> reporter: debris circling the air as the storm spirals across the road. another cyclone leaving this trail of wreckage at a factory in iowa. injuring seven people, cars overturned. piled on top of one another. >> it was crazy. we saw the tornado jump down and it hit plant three. >> reporter: just a violent storm that moved through marshalltown, iowa. the police department was evacuated during the storm. and city hall sustained serious damage. the national weather service will survey what is left to determine just how strong this storm was. amy? >> those pictures just tell the

story. marcus, thank you very much. this severe weather outbreak is unfortunately, not over. there are more tornadoes, hail and damaging winds on the way and ginger has been tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. >> amy, good morning. i think this is the perfect time to remember that sunshine, a beautiful day often erupts into this image. you need that sun to power these storms, so storms come from the sunshine. keep that in mind today because unfortunately debris floating like this is possible again today. all of this damage is possible again today. it's just in a different region and large hail that looks a lot like this could occur right here in the ohio river valley. so from kentucky right through northern tennessee there is a moderate risk. that's a really higher level. we've had a quiet tornado season until now, until what happened in iowa and from michigan all the way down to mississippi, we have the potential there. something called cape convective available potential energy is almost three times our threshold for a very active day today, paula. >> so much extreme weather. ginger, thank you. we move to that stunning headline from the white house, president trump planning to

invite russian president vladimir putin to the white house this fall. now, the president's own top intelligence official was completely caught off guard by this announcement at a forum in aspen, colorado. abc's terry moran was right there. terry, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, paula. here at the aspen security forum which brings national security experts from the trump administration, previous administrations, the private sector, people were just shocked by this announcement. and it shows that president trump is just determined here that the reshaping of u.s./russia relations, bringing america closer to the kremlin is one of his highest priorities and he's got it on a fast track. >> it's great to be with you. >> reporter: just three days after that historic and unnerving summit with vladimir putin the white house announcing on twitter president trump has invited putin to washington in the fall and discussions are already underway. catching the president's own director of national intelligence off guard. >> the white house has announced on twitter that vladimir putin is coming to the white house in

the fall. >> say that again. that's going to be special. >> reporter: the invitation coming as director dan coats openly questioned president trump for having a two-hour plus one-on-one meeting with putin at that helsinki summit. >> i would have suggested a different way, but that's not my role. that's not my job. so it is what it is. >> reporter: but the president, bristling at all the criticism, says he's been tougher on russia than any other president in recent history. >> getting along with president putin, getting along with russia is a positive, not a negative. now, with that being said, if that doesn't work out, i'll be the worst enemy he's ever had. the worst he's ever had. >> reporter: while details of what the two leaders discussed during their summit remain largely unknown, the white house is now shifting away from president trump's seeming endorsement of vladimir putin's proposal for russian authorities

to question 12 russian military officers recently indicted by special counsel robert mueller with americans invited to watch. in exchange, moscow would be allowed to question american citizens accused of unspecified crimes in russia. the president seemed enthralled by that idea on monday. >> i think that's an incredible offer. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: on wednesday the white house still not dismissing putin's proposal. >> the president is going to meet with his team. and we'll let you know when we have an announcement on that. >> reporter: one of the americans russia wants to question is former u.s. ambassador to moscow michael mcfaul pleading directly to the president not to let it happen. >> my government i hope will step up today and categorically swat this back. when i say my govern, i mean my president of the united states of america. >> reporter: president trump's own party slamming this idea. >> naive, and absurd. >> reporter: the senate passing a rare unanimous nonbinding resolution that no american officials should ever be made available to putin's government for interrogation.

now, about that one-on-one meeting that president trump had with president putin, there's only one other american who went on in that room, that's president trump's translator, marina gross. some lawmakers want to subpoena her to find out what happened. there would be a huge constitutional battle about that but there's also an interpreter's code of ethics it would violate, almost a lawyer/client privilege between interpreters and their clients, especially in this case, the president of the united states. this kbat -- battle, paula, will continue. >> yeah, it certainly is not over and quite a moment there at the forum. thank you very much, terry. robin. >> obviously he was caught off guard by what was said. now a new warning about hot car dangers after another deadly accident. an investigation is under way in houston. a 3-year-old died left behind on a bus during a day care trip. and in florida, a scary close call that was caught on camera. abc's erielle reshef is here with that story. good morning, erielle. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. these stories so often end in tragedy but thanks to a quick-thinking bystander that

happened to walk past that car in that florida, that baby is safe and sound. you're watching a florida deputy's body camera responding to a call that police say could have been deadly if not for this woman in this shirt. that's jessica kaiser, the county sheriff says she called police after spotting the baby all alone in his car seat in the back of this black ultima. it was a scorching 93 degrees outside. she opened the unlocked door and stayed with the 8-month-old until help arrived. kaiser was there when mom finally returned 24 minutes later. >> is he okay? >> he's okay. >> he's fine. >> reporter: the baby's mother, 33-year-old megan burgess breaks down. >> yes, he's okay. i know. you're welcome. >> i work in the emergency department. i'm a nurse and like i hear these stories. and i have four kids. and i always say, like, how could that ever happen? >> reporter: the national safety council says children's bodies can heat up much faster than adults. and their internal organs begin

to shut down after their core body temperature reaches 104 degrees. on the day this baby was rescued the heat index close to 103 degrees. >> had that woman -- had jessica kaiser not come out and been observant like that, we would have been discussing a tragedy of an 8-month-old child. >> reporter: jessica a hero in that case. and the mother of that baby in florida was arrested and charged with child neglect. police say it's an important reminder to check your vehicle before you leave it. even put your purse, your wallet, your phone, something that will remind you a child is in the backseat, amy. >> all right, yeah, we keep hearing it can happen to anyone and that story is proof. thank you, erielle. now to new developments in that murder mystery in california where a father was killed in his tent while camping with his daughters. there are now new reports of shots fired in that park in just the has -- past week as the reward to find the gunman climbs. abc's will carr is in malibu creek state park with the very latest on this story.

good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, amy. authorities still on the hunt for the killer in that campground death of the father. and the "l.a. times" now reporting there are two new reports of shots fired in the past week near the same campground where tristan beaudette was shot and killed while sleeping in a tent with his two young daughters. there have been at least seven separate shootings in this state park since 2016. that's when james rogers was shot in the arm while sleeping in a hammock. the shooter never found in that case. police now looking for possible connections and asking for the public's help upping their reward money to $30,000 for information that leads to an arrest. amy? >> all right, will carr, we appreciate it. thank you. paula? we do have an update on that shark scare here in new york. two children apparently bitten in rare attacks just miles and minutes apart off the coast of fire island. 13-year-old matthew donaldson, he was bitten in the leg, removed a fragment of that tooth and the tooth was given to experts to analyze. and guess what? they have confirmed, it is indeed, was, in fact, a shark. matthew, he is thankfully okay. we are told all he wants is that tooth back. a little souvenir.

that in addition to using a racial slur, the pizza giant's former ceo has been accused of sexual harassment. abc's linsey davis is here with more. >> reporter: good morning, robin. john schnatter, the now former ceo and chairman of papa john's says his use of a racial slur in that infamous conference call was intended to show employees what not to say. but this morning he's facing a slew of new allegations that extend deep into the papa john's culture, including allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior. >> better ingredients, better pizza, papa john's. >> reporter: just days after publicly apologizing on local tv for his use of a racial slur -- >> i don't condone racism in any way, period. it's just wrong. it was a mistake. it was horrible. >> reporter: this morning, disgraced pizza man john schnatter is defending himself once again. this time against allegations made in a new article on forbes.com citing reports from dozens of mostly anonymous current and former papa john's employees claiming schnatter would spy on his workers and displayed sexually inappropriate conduct. >> a former female employee who told us that every time she walked down the hall, schnatter insisted on hugging her, that he

asked the size of her bra, that he asked if she had slept with her previous boss. clearly comments that are never acceptable from the head of a company with one of his employees. >> reporter: the article also cites that in 1999, schnatter settled a lawsuit with a non-employee who claimed he groped and stalked her after meeting at a party, something schnatter denied at the time. "forbes" describes papa john's as a bro culture, enabled by schnatter and other executives where it says meetings often consisted of profanity and inappropriate comments towards women. according to one anonymous individual quoted in the article, there were meetings where even the current ceo steve ritchie just laughed along. schnatter's attorney tells abc news the story contains numerous inaccuracies and misrepresentations. it's easy to make false statements when one hides behind the cloak of anonymity. the pizza chain is struggling with negative headlines and sluggish sales since late last year facing backlash after schnatter said the nfl anthem protest was bad for business.

after admitting to using that racial slur, his iconic image has been removed from their promotional material. and more than a dozen professional sports team from the nfl, mlb and nba plus many universities have suspended or canceled their promotions with the pizza brand. we reached out to the current papa john's ceo, steve ritchie for comment, and the company replied with a statement that reads in part, we take this matter seriously. if anything is found to be wrong we are determined to take appropriate action. they also remind the public that they've hired a special committee to investigate the company culture. >> we are hearing even the agency that handles the media efforts for the company severing ties? >> yes. they announced that yesterday and said this new information calls into question the culture at papa john's and say it's not in line with their values. >> this story just continues on and on. >> does not stop. >> thank you, linsey. >> thanks, linsey. we want to move to new concerns about bee attacks. just a day after a california woman was stung hundreds of times by killer bees, two more

people have been hospitalized in two other states. diane macedo is here with details. diane, good morning. >> reporter: paula, good morning to you. so we're now learning of three new bee attacks with at least nine victims. and while at least one of those is fighting for his life this morning. authorities are on a frantic search trying to find the hive responsible. from coast to coast, emergency officials are warning residents to beware of the bee hive. from new hampshire to california, at least three people are in the hospital after hundreds of bees suddenly attacked them in the middle of their workday. in manchester, new hampshire a city worker cutting down tries was stung hundreds of times before a neighbor came to his aid. >> i went right into the middle of everything and unhooked him, took him down, brought him over there, and hosed him down. >> reporter: the victim was rushed to the hospital. the good samaritan was stung 20 times himself. >> got to do what you got to do to save a person, right? >> reporter: fortunately emergency responders found the hive. a critical component to stopping further attacks. but that's not the case in

scottsdale, arizona, where officials have launched a massive hunt for at least one hive after two separate attacks on landscapers in the area. one victim is now in critical condition. victims at the other scene denied medical transport after crews sprayed the home with foam. earlier this week -- >> the bees are attacking and stinging her. >> okay. >> oh, my god. it's ferocious. oh, my god. i feel so bad for her. >> reporter: a 54-year-old california woman reaching for a mop in her trunk was almost killed when thousands of so-called killer bees swarmed her. she's now in critical condition. >> she was literally covered from head to toe. her face was completely covered with bees. >> reporter: at least four additional people were stung in that new hampshire incident. experts say if you are ever in a bee attack, run away as far and as fast as you can. seek shelter, cover your face if possible. do not swat or flail. that can attract more bees and this one really surprised me. do not jump in water. the bees will wait for you to

during severe weather. some yam has the latest. >> we know federal investigators are looking into this as the death toll has climbed to 13 people dead. >> oh, no. >> reporter: this cell phone video capturing the terrifying moments just before a tourist boat full of passengers flips over, caught in the middle of a lake during powerful thunderstorms. >> poor guys. oh, my gosh. oh, no. >> oh, no. >> reporter: you can see the boat struggling to navigate as waves hit it from every direction. onlookers watching the horror from a nearby dinner cruise on table rock lake near branson, missouri. at the time reports of winds exceeding more than 60 miles per hour. a second vessel also a duck boat seen fighting through the turbulent waters as it makes its way back to safety. but the conditions too much to bear for this vessel. at 7:00 p.m. central emergency responders notified that the boat has capsized.

tossing 31 passengers including several children into the water. >> i need a water rescue. will be north of the showboat. will be a duck that has capsized. >> reporter: the boat company that operated the vessel, ride the ducks, telling abc news this incident has deeply affected all of us. we will continue to do all we can to assist the families who were involved and the authorities as they continue with the search and rescue. still so many questions about what happened there. you heard in our report some witnesses saying they knew the storm was coming and decided not to get on the boats. it's unclear why the captain would go out knowing the storm was coming. also the protocol about coming back once the storm was overhead. federal investigators and ntsb will be getting to the bottom of it. robin? >> just thinking of all those families that were impacted. >> still a lot of questions to

be answered. we want to move to those devastating tornadoes ripping through the heartland. injuring multiple people. knocking out power. and damaging a hospital in iowa. so let's go to ginger in central park with all of the details. ginger, good morning. >> oh, paula, 27 reported tornadoes in iowa alone. it's been a very quiet start to tornado season and we're kind of late in it. so for these images to be coming out it is something to note because we are not done with the threat. you see all that debris flying around the tornado. we could see that again today. the damage from those tornadoes in iowa significant and today they'll be going out, the national weather service to do the survey to see just how intense those were but i reminded you we have the potential for it again from kentucky through tennessee, but that large orange and yellow area from michigan through alabama and mississippi back even into southern missouri. you still have the possibility of damaging winds, tornadoes and huge hail. that's all today but, remember, we have to be watching the west coast. so many large wildfires. 50 of them burning. that's the substation fire in oregon. 50,000 acres at least burned and the heat settling in, even

and now to our "gma" cover story, a health alert about that oppressive heat millions are facing right now. according to the cdc hundreds of people die from extreme temperatures every year. just days ago an 18-year-old teen dying from heat-related illness in kansas. and dr. jennifer ashton is here with what we need to know to stay safe. so what are the danger signs we look for? >> robin, this bears repeating literally every year because the

statistics you just showed and also because so many people in the u.s. right now are facing potentially life-threatening heat. so first of all a reminder, there is a spectrum when we talk about heat-related illness, it starts with heat cramps then goes on to heat exhaustion then heatstroke. heatstroke is a medical 911 emergency. in terms of what to look out for take a look at this list, it could be literally these things head to toe. dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, a fast or rapid pulse or heart rate. and then the sweating stops. when that happens that is a call 911. >> when the sweating stops. >> yes, your body can't cool itself off. >> who is most vulnerable? >> we hear over and over again very young, like, babies. the elderly, or people on certain medications. i want to emphasize to be crystal clear, everyone is at risk. when it's 110 and you see that noon jogger who thinks he or she is superfit and immune, not true. teenagers, vulnerable as in that poor teen in kansas who died of

this. so literally every single person should consider themselves at risk. >> i know you say to call 911. but what are some things you can do to help somebody out? >> this is basic thermodynamics. why we have these props we're talking about convection. so you want to get someone in air conditioned evaporation so submerge them into an ice or cold temperature of water, bath, a shower if they can stand and ingestion so you do want to give them cool or cold beverages this is really important. you have to bring that core temperature down. but if you're talking about someone who has a change in their mental status, not responsive and they're not sweating, you need to call first responders, absolutely. >> all right, jen, thanks so much as always for that. >> stay cool. >> i will. it's going to be hard to do that this weekend but we will. have a great weekend. >> thank you. now to that new way employees are rallying around their expecting co-workers. helping them take maternity leave by donating their own vacation time. love this. rebecca jarvis is here with more on that. hey there, rebecca. >> reporter: hey, robin, good morning.

one in four moms is going back to work just two weeks after giving birth. we're the only country in the developed world without a paid family leave policy. and now the employees of one company showing some extreme generosity in the face of this massive challenge. it's a huge challenge facing so many working mothers and fathers-to-be. >> i found out i was pregnant maybe two weeks after i started with the company. >> reporter: angela hughes planned to bond with her new baby. had banked vacation days but when bella arrived two months early it wasn't enough. angela's boss and co-workers taking matters into their own hands. instead of buying items for her off a registry, gifting their own relatively new co-worker their own time off. >> it was the right thing to do and i had the time. and i wanted to -- i wanted to give her what i could. and if it made life a little bit simpler for her, then why wouldn't i do that? >> reporter: their extreme

generosity allowing her to take eight weeks of paid maternity leave. nearly all of it donated. >> i was extremely humbled and i knew that it was a total blessing. >> reporter: the u.s. and papua new guinea are the only countries without a paid family leave policy. some new parents can take 12 weeks off. but just 15% will get paid while they bond with their new baby. and paid family leave is more common for people working in finance, information and professional services. >> there are lots of employers who adopted these policies because they know it attracts talent. it keeps good people. >> reporter: it leaves many working parents looking for alternatives like taylor and ross, who we met last year. how did you make the decision ultimately to crowd-fund the maternity leave? >> we were doing everything the way that they tell you to. we were saving money. we both had good jobs. you know, we did it all the right way but clearly that

wasn't the plan. >> it occurred to me that my pride, our privacy don't outweigh taylor and aidan getting the chance that they need to spend time together at this most crucial part of our lives. >> and what's unbelievable here is almost all voters, republicans and democrats, are in favor of a national paid leave policy. they can't agree on how to pay for it which is why this has been left up to individual companies to decide, robin. >> they agree there has to be. >> there needs to be a solution. >> who is entitled to maternity leave? >> anyone who works in a company with 50 or more employees is entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave. that accounts for about 60%. >> unpaid, though. >> exactly. this is unpaid. and for those who are working in hourly wage jobs, for the most part, there's no paid leave policies. >> yeah, you don't work, you don't get paid. >> exactly. >> oh, my goodness. but there are come companies that are doing the right thing? >> yes, and they're generally speaking the most competitive

employers. those who want to retain talent and keep top talent happy. so the technology companies out there, netflix, microsoft, google, apple, they're some of the best paid leave policies. >> what can you do, rebecca, if your employer is not helping out? >> i think this is so important for people to recognize that this solution that this company put together, the boss giving up her own vacation time is a great thing, but that's not the solution. for a lot of people, and i hear this all the time, they're being misled by their employers. they're not completely clear about what they're entitled to. if you're not clear about what you're entitled to at your employer or in your state reach out to an attorney for free advice. they do a free consultation. so reach out to an employment attorney, ask for a free consultation and tell them you believe you're entitled to maternity leave and not getting it. >> okay, that is some great advice there. i'm sure a lot of people will heed it. rebecca, have a good weekend. >> you, too. amy, she's over there in the park already. amy? >> yes, i made it to the park, robin and it is a beautiful day
