off. we begin with an honor to six lives lost. live in berkeley where there is now a tribute to those victims. cornell. >> hi, dionne. that contribute is a black in the corner of the park. flowers line the pace of it. it's a permanent reminder of six lives lost. >> we pray they are at peace and with one another. >> reporter: prayers mark the new black at the memorial park remembering six students, five of them from irl, who died when the balcony they were standing on collapsed at the library gardens complex in june 2015. >> we in ireland feel a great sense of contact with the tragedy, the loss of these six young people at the beginning of their lives. >> the victims' families laid flowers at the base of the black and the strawberry trees nearby. fire captain rick guzman

remembers that terrible night. >> we rolled up on scene. there was essentially a pile of bodies on the sidewalk. it was difficult to take in. >> they revealed the balcony's failure was a result of water damage. details concluded they tried to save money. it led to safer balconies statewide. >> the effort we took has led to a statewide movement to strength en. >> amanda into on behalf of her sister and all the families. >> you guys have been absolutely phenomenal in getting things done and supporting us. i don't know how our families would have gotten through out without all of you guys. thank you. >> here is what it looks like today. all the balconies removed. a small sidewalk memorial pays

tribute to the students. >> there was a quote from irish poet james joyce engraved in the black which reads they lived and laughed and loved and left. we're live in berkeley, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> so fitting, cornell, thank you. in developing news, a person died when a drive tried to escape from police crashed on an east bay freeway. traffic was snarled for hours. abc 7 news was on westbound highway 24 in orinda while investigators searched for clues. contra costa county sheriff said the sped away after being stopped by police. they lost sight of it. moments later it overturned near the b.a.r.t. station. one of two people in the car died, the other in the hospital. take a look at what drivers had this morning, lanes occupy after 3:00 this afternoon. breaking news out of lake county right now. take a look at this, another wildfire started.

this time near kelseyville. this abc 7 view shows smoke in the air. they have issued an evacuation order for the area. so far the fire has burned about 60 acres. to developing news now on the ferguson wildfire burning near yosemite. there are new mandatory evacuation orders. yosemite west and anderson valley area are now under an evacuation order. yosemite national park remains open though the fire's path is heading toward the park. a red cross shelter has been set up at the new life christian churches in mariposa. that fire started eight days ago and charred more than 42 square miles and just 42% contained. breaking news out of los angeles where people escaped from a trader joe's a short time ago. police surrounding the silver lake neighborhood after a car

chase ended at the front door. the suspect ran inside that store. it is still unclear if that suspect is armed. police officers carried one person who appeared to be injured away from that trader joe's. developing news out of midwest now where the search is under way for a college student with ties to the east bay. more than 100 volunteers met at a fire station in brooklyn, iowa, to locate 20-year-old molly tickebetibets. she was last seen on wednesday. they reported her after not seeing her wednesday. >> we hope we can get her found and brought back home to people who love her. >> she's probably about 5'2", brown hair, brown eyes, beautiful smile, great with kids. >> searchers have combed acres of farmland on foot while a helicopter assisted them from above. tibbets attended elementary and middle school at piedmont. she's currently attending university of iowa. the latest out of the

southwest, out of southwest missouri where 17 people died on a tour boat. the coast guard said the poet had passed an inspection in february. abc news reporter in branson where a survivor is talking about what happened when she was thrown into the water. >> reporter: riding the ducks, a favorite pass time for tourists but the trip ending in tragedy. >> waves crashing over my face. every time i would get my head above water, i would say, help, help. they were throwing life rafts to everybody. i couldn't reach it, get there in time. >> at 7:30 p.m. a severe thunderstorm for the area including table rock lake, branson, missouri, in the middle of the zone. >> be advised we have strong thunderstorms moving through right now. intense winds and rain in branson. >> by 7:00 p.m. those thunderstorms turning deadly for passengers. the boat tossed around the lake by 63 mile-per-hour wind gusts and 6' waves before capsizing. >> i was there with my husband

and our three children who were nine, seven and one. >> tia coleman survived the accident. her husband and children did not. she lost nine family members. >> i couldn't see anybody. i couldn't hear anything. i could hear screams. it felt like i was out there on my own. >> the 13-year-old nephew the only other family member to survive. he's been released from the hospital. relatives say he'll have a difficult road to recovery. >> he tried to save one of the kids and couldn't do it. >> said he didn't have the energy. >> the ntsb and coast guard now leading the investigation. >> we'll look at the vessel, we'll look at the operation of the vessel, we'll look at the people involved, we'll look at the environment. >> authorities say it will take several days to get the equipment in place to raise the sunken vessel. abc news, branson, missouri. a scare today for people at the california state fair in sacramento. take a look.

looks like an action movie. monorail actually caught fire this afternoon. can you see those sparks flying as people ran from the monorail. cal fire says the small electrical fire was contained to one fire and the operator was the only one aboard the train. take a look, a car causing damage outside the front doors of a post office in san rafael. a fire department tweeted the picture you see here. responding crews closed the post office to check and make sure the building was safe. no one was hurt. the oakland a's and their fans are trying to set a record when san francisco giants visit the coliseum tonight. the aides say they have sold every seat and that includes the top level of mount davis above the outfield. that level includes 8100 seats. mount davis is open this weekend for the first time in 13 years. so if every seat is filled tonight, the a's will likely pass their all-time attendance

the game in less than 30 seconds watching this video. we posted it at our website abc7news.com. mean time golfers out on the green once again at a san francisco golf course. abc 7 news at golden gate golf course where a teach rather clubhouse is now open where the original one once stood. that course reopened yesterday less than three weeks after a fire there. flames destroyed that clubhouse that was originally built in 1951. it's still not clear exactly what start thad fire. many bay area children lived out part of their dreams today playing on a major league baseball field. abc 7 news was at oakland coliseum where the athletics players and the team's medical staff hosted an event called play. play stands for promoting a lifetime of activity for youth. kids from station -- moved from station to station to learn about skills and activities that

san diego. organizers tell us the idea was to have fun by sharing the joy of singing and making music. hundreds came out today to help preserve a piece of radio history here in the bay area. abc 7 news was at the california historical radio society in alameda for their annual radio by the bay fundraiser. it raises money for a society which operates an education center and vintage radio museum. attendees had a live performance and got a chance to bid on radio equipment and historic memorabilia from heyday. >> accuweather forecast from drew tuma. >> afternoon sunshine last week, the weekend shaping up similarly. live doppler radar showing you cloud cover right along the coast kind of stretching over san francisco right now. look what's happening to our east around lake tahoe and

the a's are expecting a record crowd at the coliseum when they take on the giants for game two of the bay bridge series. giants won last night's game 5-1. first pitch tonight in about 40 minutes. this afternoon a's playing let's make a deal with the mets trading for pitcher, the 28-year-old right-hander with 117 saves since the start of 2015. that's tied for third most in the majors. the gingp pitcher pitcher pitch bobby wahl and will l l l l they transferred gossett to disabled list, 40 relief appearances this season with the

in lake county where a wildfire has erupted and is forcing people to evacuate from their homes. is brisbane about to double in size? the proposal residents are going to be asked to vote on this november that could reshape the city. once again getting you back to that breaking news we first told you about at the top of our newscast coming out of los angeles where you can see there those people who escaped from trader joe's not too long ago. now, police are trying to determine if there are hostages inside the store. they surrounded the supermarket in silver lake neighborhood after a car crash ended near the store's front door. our sister station kabc notes a suspect ran in that store. still unclear if that suspect is
