>> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, july 22nd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning, everyone. we're starting with gray skies especially along the coast and around the bay as you can see with live doppler 7 and the satellite image. let's head inland. a live shot from walnut creek, there are some blue skies. that's where we'll see the warmest temperatures throughout the day. during this next hour, low clouds around the coast and bay. temperatures in the 60s for the most part, sunnier skies by lunchtime. it will be a breezy afternoon. but inland, temperatures will warm up to the low 90s around the bay, upper 70s to near 80. at the coast, the sea breeze keeps things cool, low to mid-60s. sun sets at 8:27. it will still be a pleasant

evening at 9:00. i'll have your complete accuweather seven-day forecast coming up, carolyn. >> thank you, frances. breaking news out of washington state this morning. a police officer has been killed while responding to reports of shots fired just south of seattle. it started around 2:00 this morning in the city of kent. police were in pursuit of a red truck when an officer laying down spike strips was hit and killed. police say their preliminary investigation has found another pursuing officer struck that officer. but they're blaming the tragedy on the suspect. >> it's directly because of this suspect or suspects' actions that led to the officer's death. let me make that perfectly clear. while that vehicle may not have been the one that struck the officer, make no doubt about it, had it not been for their actions, the officer would be alive right now. >> the suspect is in custody. another officer is in critical condition, being treated at the hospital.

a store manager is dead following a hostage situation at a trader joe's in los angeles. police say an armed man held dozens of customers inside that store yesterday. they say he drove there after shooting his grandmother in her home. he eventually surrendered to police. abc 7 news reporter marci gonzalez has the details. >> reporter: this morning the man police say caused this intense scene, in custody. accused of a deadly shooting spree and holding dozens of people hostage in this los angeles supermarket. police say it started 1:30 saturday afternoon with a gunman shooting his grandmother seven times at her south l.a. home, leaving her in critical condition. inst woman, grazed in the head by a bullet, was then kidnapped by the suspect, taking off in the grandmother's car, the suspect allegedly shooting at police through the back window as officers followed him.

the pursuit ending here with a stolen car crashing outside of this trader joe's.out. the cops were firing at him. he fired back. >> reporter: the suspect shot in the arm, rushing into the backed grocery store. an employee, identified by family as melyda corado, killed. it's unclear if she was caught in the crossfire or was shot by the suspect. customers and her co-workers running. others desperately taking cover. >> i just went into survival mode and was trying to think of the best way to get myself out. everyone was really scared. >> reporter: some escaping. as many as 50 others held inside the store. >> he made a series of demands. at all times our hostage negotiators believed they had established a good rapport with him. >> reporter: a slow stream of hostages led out with their hands raised after three long hours, around 6:30 p.m., the suspect requesting handcuffs from police, putting them on, and surrendering. and six people were transported from the scene to a hospital, including the suspect, the woman he's accused of kidnapping, and

a 12-year-old boy. they are all expected to survive. marci gonzalez, abc 7 news, los angeles. people will gather for a memorial in san francisco today. it marks the third mario woods remembrance day. woods was killed by police in the bay view in december of 2015, his death recorded by cellphone sparking national outrage. today would have been his 29th birthday. organizers expect hundreds of people to attend. it starts at 11:00 this morning at martin luther king jr. park on third street. a deadly end to a police chase in the east bay. abc 7 news was on westbound highway 24 in orinda. the contra costa county sheriff's office told us a driver sped away during a top:00 ye oichadft car it seeingit, as you do there,

overturned on the freeway. one person died, another is in the hospital. two drivers are under arrest following a crash in san francisco. it involved a tour bus and a mustang. abc 7 news was at the civic center after police took both drivers into custody. officers say the bus driver assaulted the man driving the ford mustang. they also arrested the mustang's driver, claiming he drove recklessly. one of the bus passengers describes how road rage simmered for several blocks before that crash. >> the bus tried to go around him to the right. the car, the mustang, keeps blocking him to the point that he blocked him totally. it just continued for ten pamedicanadia urt m more a couplof hours for another bus to come and pick them up. five people trapped by high tide near a beach while fishing

are now safe. the police escorted them back to their cars early this morning. crews walked with them using flashlights back to the parking lot. the group became stranded at 8:30 last night near pirate's cove. no one was injured. today is the final game of the bay bridge series between the giants and the a's. last night was a milestone for oakland as the team celebrated the largest attendance in coliseum history. what does that mean for the possibilities of a new a's stadium? abc 7 news reporter katie utehs takes us out to the ball game. >> reporter: a fleet of fans honor baseball history. >> i survived game three. i can say when the earthquake happened. >> reporter: and made some. at saturday night's bay bridge series game between the oakland athletics and san francisco giants. this sellout crowd is the atten coliseum history.

whether people want to admit it or not. >> reporter: as the proverbial phrase goes, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. >> something that somebody meant for negative turned around to a positive, because now we're coming to support and encourage everybody to come out and support, keep the brother's business booming. >> reporter: amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. the mono rail at the california state fair is out of service. firefighters rushed to the grounds in sacramento after it caught fire yesterday. that's a lot of sparks and smoke. the sacramento fire department described the electrical fire as small. the mono rail operator was the only one on board. crews were able to rescue that person from the stalled train. heavy rain, strong winds, are hitting the east coast this morning, causing flash flooding. and there is more on the way. abc 7 news senior meteorologist rob marciano is tracking it all.

>> this morning, storms wreaking havoc from the deep south to the northeast. heavy rains flooding roads. and this confirmed tornado, one of 36 reported in just five days. as storm signs blare, that funnel cloud ominously above, touching down here, interrupting a picture perfect wedding and threatening the area's 30,000 residents. on the eastern seaboad, storms quickly rolling in. just outside washington, d.c., emergency crews rushing to save four passengers in this swamped car. the driver trying to cross a flooded road before getting trapped. this morning's weather just the latest in a string of storms raging across the country this week. this video capturing the moment lightning struck a 22-year-old woman at a wisconsin music

festival. minutes later, you see bystanders discovering her unconscious. >> her phone was completely shattered. they was just laying on her stomach, completely unresponsive. >> the woman now recovering. rob marciano, abc news, new york. for us, we're just dealing with fog and low clouds in the bay area. live doppler 7 and the satellite image shows how it's filled into parts of the east bay. also a bit of a sea breeze right now. winds will pick up so we'll get cooler temperatures along the coast. right now nine miles per hour around san francisco. temperatures mostly in the 60s. san francisco, 60. san jose has climbed to 70 degrees. half moon bay cooler at 59 degrees. from the east bay hills we're looking out towards mt. diablo at some of those low clouds. it's starting to dissipate.

we'll get clearing much more quickly in inland areas where we've seen blue skies already. that's where temperatures will warm up to the low 90s today. santa rosa, 61 degrees. fairfield, 67. livermore, 66 degrees. here is how the fog plays out today. 10:00, we'll still see it along parts of the north bay and the peninsula coast, starting to pull back already from the east bay. then by 3:00 this afternoon, plenty of sunshine for everyone with the exception of the coast where those clouds will linger throughout the day and then 9:00 tonight, you'll see the clouds creep back in across the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge into parts of the east bay and we'll wake up to gray skies once again tomorrow morning. lots of sports events going on. it's going to be great out there this afternoon. for the bay bridge series baseball game today, temperatures will be mild, in the low 70s and plenty of sunshine as well. we've got a soccer match going on as well, at the levi's

stadium, warm, low to mid-80s. bring your sunscreen and stay hydrated. san francisco, at&t park, the rugby world cup sevens. low clouds to deal with, temperatures climbing to 60 degrees by this afternoon. mostly sunny. in san francisco, gusts could reach up to 23 miles per hour. even though the high for today will be in the upper 60s, it will feel cooler than that. then the final match is at 5:33, temperatures will be dropping down into the low 60s. the highs today for everyone around the bay area are very similar to yesterday's numbers. look for 60s at the coast to low 90s inland. around the bay we'll see 70s and 80s. san mateo, 75. palo alto, 80 degrees there. also low 90s for the menlo summer fest. mid-80s from santa rosa true napa, nice and comfortable. mild overnight, especially inland. temperatures will be in the 60s there like antioch, 65. lots of 50s around the bay as

a controversy in minnesota. two moms are getting support after a confrontation at their local pool. they staged what they call a nurse-in to side with women who are breast feeding and told to cover up. >> we support breast feeding mothers. >> reporter: it's the breast feeding backlash that sparked this so-called nurse-in. >> it's their right to nurse when and where they want. >> reporter: a minnesota pool becoming a site for protest as dozens of moms flock to feed their little ones to prove a point. >> no mother has to feel the way that i was made to feel, humiliated and shamed, for doing something so natural. >> reporter: it comes after stephanie buchanan and mary davis say they were breast feeding their babies in the

kiddie pool of the moore aquatic center. complaints turned into a scour sufficiently. >> a patron at the pool came up to me and told me that i needed to cover because her sons were swimming. >> reporter: the city saying a teen staffer at the public pool politely asked the moms to be more discreet or relocate to another area. when they did not, it created an untenable situation. the employee eventually calling 911. >> apparently there's a mother breast feeding in the shallow end and not being very discreet about it. >> reporter: they took their frustration to facebook, claiming staff broke a minnesota law that says a mother may breast feed in any location, public or private, where the mother and child are otherwise authorized to be. >> it's about what the baby needs. the baby needs to eat. he or sheoesn't ce bo is galvanizing a group of women who showed up at the pool saturday in a show ofyork.

conversation concerns a scheme to buy the silence of former playboy playmate karen mcdougal who claims to have had an an ann with trump in 2006. this weekend, the fbi released 400 pages of documents related to former campaign foreign policy adviser carter page. the documents, part of an october 2016 wiretap application, released under the freedom of information act, accused page of being an agent for a foreign power having established relationships with russian government officials, including russian intelligence officers. page tells abc news he's stunned by the allegations, which he has repeatedly claimed are false. quote, i'm having trouble finding any small bit of this document that rises above complete ignorance and/or insanity. david wright, abc news, washington. a new poll shows more than

half of americans disapprove of president trump doubting russian interference in the 2016 election. according to an abc news/"washington post" poll, 56% disapprove. just 29% approve. the poll also finds just 33% approve of the president's handling of his summit with vladimir putin last week, with four in ten saying he went too far in supporting the russian leader. if you missed it, the trump chicken is going to set sail on san francisco bay today. this is video from its last voyage in february. it's part of a protest. organizers say they'll circle alcatraz which they're jokingly referring to as "the big coop." the chicken will leave from crissy field at noon. a woman who lost nine family members in the duck boat accident in missouri remains in

the hospital this morning. tia coleman lost her husband and three children in the tragedy. and she says going home will be difficult. >> i don't know how i'm going to do it. since i've had a home, it's always been filled with little feet and laughter. and my husband. i don't know how i'm going to do it. >> the ntsb says divers have retrieved a recorder of the boat's trip data. it's the same as an airplane's black box. it's been flown to washington, d.c. to be analyzed. >> when we take it out of the water, we put it back in lake water. it stays in there until it gets back in the washington, d.c. labs where we have some fairly sophisticated means to dry it out. >> the coast guard says ride the

ducks has voluntarily shut down operations for now. the search continues for a missing college student who has ties to the bay area. search parties are scouring county roads, lakes, and ponds in the mid-west. she is 20-year-old molly tibbetts who was last seen going out for a jog in brooklyn, iowa, wednesday night. friends reported the university of iowa student missing the next day. more than 100 volunteers met yesterday to canvass the area where she was last seen. family members tell abc 7 news even concerned community members are joining the search. >> the volunteer search teams were put together yesterday. and all of the donation of and water to these volunteers, it was phenomenal. farmland on foot while a helicopter assisted from above. tibbetts spent part of her childhood in piedmont. evacuations remain in effect

this morning because of a wildfire burning near kelseyville. the carter file has burned 57 acres. it's 40% contained. sheriff's officers have asked residents to leave because of the danger. cal fire says they've stopped forward progress and remain on scene overnight. evacuation orders have expanded near yosemite because of the now 30,000 acre ferguson fire. yosemite west and anderson valley are now under those mandatory evacuations. that fire is just 6% contained. officials say two firefighters were hurt friday with back injuries. a cal fire dozer operator was killed last operate while building a fire break. this week a conference committee created by the governor and state leaders will hop a public hearing to discuss who pays for the damages caused by the north bay wildfire. the wildfire preparedness committee will meet wednesday at

the state capitol. cal fire determined pg&e's power equipment caused more than a dozen fires across northern california back in october. the committee has until the end of august to come up with a wildfire response bill that would determine the liability of utilities. still ahead here on "abc 7 mornings," 7 on your side's michael finney with a new version of an old scam. a bay area mother and daughter want to warn everyone, don't let it happen to you. and here is a live look from our golden gate bridge camera. you see the low fog is just -- the low clouds and fog hanging in there.

fog pulls back to the coast. we'll see partly cloudy conditions along the coast. mostly sunny conditions. 9:00 tonight, it starts to creep back in. also notice areas of green up through the tahoe area. still a chance of thunderstorms in tahoe, about 40% chance today. so highs today will range from 60s at the coast to 70s and 80s around the bay and low 90s inland. some of our warmest spots will be 90 in concord, 91 in antioch. look for a comfortable mid-80 in santa rosa and napa. san jose, 84 degrees. if you are headed to santa cruz, it should be really nice later on. temperatures will warm up into the low 70s. we've got clouds, some sunshine this afternoon. but the sea breeze does keep things cool through ocean beach and half moon bay. so mid-60s there. there's still a high uv index. heads up, beach hazard starts tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and continues through wednesday morning for south and west-facing beaches. we could say seven to nine-foot

breakers. current wave heights range from four to six feet. if you're headed to the coast, watch out for rip currents and sneaker waves. heads up, high pressure will build over the southwest. that will bring very warm temperatures for the east bay hills and diablo range. so not in many of the major cities. but if you are hiking up towards mt. diablo or mt. hamilton, highs could reach from the 90s to 110 degrees. overnight lows will only drop to the 80s and 70s. heat illnesses are possible. also heads up, there's still an air quality alert because of th, yosemite. here is a live picture, we're actually finally being able to see the half dome. we haven't seen that all week. so it is improving, but it's still out there. be careful if you're traveling around the state. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. we have a sunny typical summer afternoon with morning fog and

on the table. >> reporter: wendy decided to try her luck as a personal chef. >> i ran an ad on craigslist. >> reporter: nobody responded at first. then a nibble. >> he was a british national. >> reporter: an e-mail said testifies michael atkins. he and his family needed a chef. >> that they would be vacationing in the bay area for about six weeks. >> we were both just thrilled. it was -- that was very good news. >> reporter: the man sent more e-mails about his plans along with a list of favorite foods. >> and i was very excited. >> reporter: he insisted on paying a deposit and sent this check for $4,500. >> we needed the money. and so the funds were deposited. >> reporter: after that, the man asked her to use part of that check to pay a chauffeur he was >> pe send a check on to this person, which i did. >> reporter: she deposited a check for $2,000 into an account at wells fargo bank, as the man

directed. later, wendy tried to research the man online but found no such person. >> i started to worry a little bit. >> reporter: his e-mails became more demanding. she told him she didn't want to work for him after all. he told her to return the rest of that $4,500. and she did. a big mistake. >> just awful. >> reporter: what she didn't realize is that $4,500 check was fake. there was no family coming, no one hiring her to cook. the money wendy deposited to the man's account came out of her own savings. >> what are we going to do now? we're going to lose the house. our money went to a scammer. >> reporter: mother and daughter are now renting out rooms on airbnb and slowing recovering from their loss. they wanted me to warn you, if somebody sends you a check and asks you to send money anywhere, it's almost certainly a scam.

happening today, the san francisco symphony returns for its annual summer performance. the symphony presents more than 220 concerts and reaches nearly 600,000 people each year. they'll perform the works of dvorak and beethoven. with a percussion demonstration and a free yoga class. the concert starts at 2:00 this afternoon. seating is first come, first served. we were doing our jazz hands, but this is the symphony.
