point out, recently deployed extra officers in response to a spike in gun violence. we're going to bring you more details on the investigation as soon as we get it. but now we turn to the other breaking story overnight, an explosive new round of tough talk between president trump and iran. >> now, first up, iran's president made a brazen threat about war on sunday and then president trump hit back overnight with a fiery warning of his own putting iran on notice to never threaten the u.s. again or else, all in his words. abc's arlette saenz is in washington with the very latest. good morning, arlette. >> reporter: hey, kendis and diane, good morning. it's not the first time the president has made these type of threats. last year it was fire and fury against north korea, and now he's telling iran to stop their threats or else. back in washington, president trump fired off a late night all caps warning to iran. the president tweeted, never ever threaten the united states again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever

suffered before. around the same time, the president's secretary of state blasted the regime. >> the level of corruption and wealth among iranian leaders shows it is run by something more like the mafia than the government. >> reporter: he said war with iran is the mother of all wars and added, mr. trump, do not play with the lion's tail or else you will regret it. the escalating war of words comes as iran faces looming sanctions months after the u.s. withdrew from the nuclear deal. >> the fact is, this was a horrible, one-sided deal that should have never ever been made. >> reporter: the president's also dealing with more fallout from his sit-down with russian president vladimir putin. >> president putin, he just said it's not russia. i will say this, i don't see any reason why it would be. >> reporter: a statement he later walked back. a new abc news/"washington post" poll found roughly 50% of voters disapprove of the president's handling of the summit.

>> these are serious matters, and i think there's no ignoring the fact that for whatever reason, this president acts like he's compromised. >> reporter: after a week of walk-backs on russia's election interference, the president fired off another tweet on russia calling it all a big hoax. diane and kendis. >> arlette saenz live from d.c., arlette, thank you. meanwhile, the president is now accusing the justice department of misleading the court that approved wiretapping his former campaign adviser carter page. documents released over the weekend show that the fbi told the fisa court carter page was recruited by moscow and had been conspiring with the russian government. page calls those allegations ridiculous. this morning, we're learning more about that deadly hostage standoff at a trader joe's supermarket in los angeles. police say an argument between a man and his grandmother triggered the violence and as stories of heroism among the victims emerged, there are plenty of questions about exacw g store manager was killed.

this morning, a growing memorial outside this los angeles trader joe's. customers, co-workers, even strangers leaving notes and flowers for the store's manager, melyda corado, who was shot and killed during a three-hour standoff with police. >> shots fired at trader joe's. a 9 millimeter handgun. >> reporter: they say it all began as a family dispute in south los angeles where 28-year-old gene atkins allegedly shot his grandmother seven times. >> i think the cause of the shooting pretty much has something to do with the girlfriend. the grandma didn't want the girlfriend over there at the house. >> reporter: police say one of atkins' bullets grazed his girlfriend in the head before he forced her into his grandmother's car and then took off while firing at officers as they followed. his vehicle eventually crashing into a pole outside the trader joe's where the gun battle with police escalated. >> then i heard like three or four pops in the distance. >> reporter: devin fields, a

writer for "jimmy kimmel live" was outside the store only feet away from atkins after the crash. he says he hid behind a concrete wall as officers exchanged fire with atkins in the parking lot. >> three officers ran up, knelt down, put their guns on the retaining wall, took aim for a moment and then opened fire. and then the gunman started returning fire at them or at least in their general direction and then they fell to the ground to protect themselves, and they told me to lie down at that point. so then we were all laying on the ground together. they were worried about the bullets going through the concrete wall we were all hiding behind. so they told me to wait. >> reporter: after getting shot in the arm, atkins ran into the store. d at aes our series of demands negotibeevedheha established a good rapport with him. >> reporter: some of those hostages hid in a back room, one girl texting her mother during the ordeal. >> they were barricaded in a room in the back. i don't think he ever even knew that that group of people were

there. >> reporter: several hostages could be seen leaving the store with their hands raised. some using a ladder to climb out of a window. atkins eventually requested handcuffs from police and surrendered. and atkins is held on $2 million bail. his grandmother survived the shooting and police have not said whether the store manager who was killed was shot by the suspect or was caught in the cross fire. turning to the weather, parts of california and arizona are bracing for extreme heat this week while here in the east the forecast calls for more drenching rain. severe storms triggered this flash flood in coatesville, pennsylvania. people at a at that time vern jumped into action to rescue people in the floodwaters which swept away several kegs and even a dumpster. now a look at your forecast for this monday morning. good morning. while the rain continues for the northeast, showers and thunderstorms from montreal, toronto, down to new york and

a suspected gunman is in custody after a deadly shooting at a mormon church in fallon, nevada. police say the 48-year-old suspect walked into the church and opened fire killing one person and injuring another. he was later arrested after walking home. no word this morning on a motive. police in houston are seeking the public's help to solve the murder of a well-known cardiologist. this is a sketch of the suspect wanted the for the killing of dr. mark hausknecht. he was riding his bike to work last friday when police say the suspect rode past him and turned and fired two shots. police have also released a surveillance photo showing the alleged shooter riding away after the murder. hausknecht once treated president george h.w. bush. a driver for uber and lyft has now lost his ride after admitting he live-streamed passengers in the backseat without their consent. jason gargac is accused of posting video online of
