they're going to be having breakfast here and their morning briefing later on this morning. about 250 firefighters are on this fire. this is where they're going to be having breakfast. more firefighters will be heading back on to the front lines. fire crews are being very aggressive with this fire. cal fire deployed two helicopters and four air tankers. they were able to drop naflame retardant on the hillside. country club road sunday afternoon. sky map 7 shows where the fire spread forcing evacuations of a couple ranch properties. one structure was lost. last update by cal fire has it at 322 acres and 40% contained. >> the hot weather combined with very dry fuel you've seen fire season in northern california get off to a very fast start. we've already had significant fires all over the state. >> the fire also threatened some radio and tv towers. neighbors say the remote looking hill is popular with hand

gliders. we're expecting an update from cal fire soon. reporting live in milpitas, matt keller, abc 7 news. a final good-bye today to a firefighter who died while fighting the ferguson fire, the fire burning near yosemite national park. 36-year-old braden varney died last saturday while operating a bulldozer near the fire line. today friends and family will say good-bye at a memorial service in modesto. varney served in cal fire's merced units for a decade and leaves behind a wife and two young children. four others have been hurt while fighting the ferguson fire. it's burned more than 50 square miles in ten days. the u.s. forest service says this weekend firefighters attempted a direct attack on part of the fire but they had to back off as conditions got too dangerous. >> we also have crews on the ground, fire crews and fire engines putting water down on it. they are utilizing all the tools that they have to try to create breaks and create a buffer zone and to stop that fire spread

from getting into the park. >> but they have a lot of work ahead of them. the ferguson fire 6% contained. developing news out of missouri, the coast guard will try to retrieve the sunken duck boat today after an accident left 17 people dead. this comes as a community gatherses to mourn those who lost their lives. ♪ o lord my god >> about 200 people attended a memorial last night in branson to honor the victims. a church bell chimed 17 times. today's salvage plan includes bringing the boat to the surface, taking it to shore and transporting it to a secure facility toy inspect it. officials hope data taken from the boat's recorder may reveal what happened in the final moments before it capsized. happening today the man accused of killing an unarmed securird inncis ischuled preliminary hearing. police say cardell mason shot and killed rolando romero while he was face timing his wife in the philippines this month.

for fake tags. six in custody following a pursuit in oakland. opd tweeted this last night, they were asking residents to stay in their homes near 34th avenue, a few blocks north of the fruit veil bart station. police say a pursuit ended in that area and the suspects ran into a home and surrendered to officers an hour later. survivors of the las vegas mass shooting are expected to speak about a lawsuit filed by mgm. the company owns mandalay bay hotel where the gunman staged his attack on a country music concert last october. mgm is suing 1,000 victims in hopes of avoiding liability claims citing a 2002 law established after the terrorist attacks. the survivors feel like mandalay bay didn't do enough to protect them. in a san francisco courtroom this morning, lee johnson scheduled to begin testimony in his lawsuit against monsanto

westbound 580, 6 minutes, westbound 84 ten minute drive across the dumbarton bridge. developing news on the bart stabbing that killed a young woman last night at the macrthur station. police are still looking for a suspect. >> bart police say the stabbing appears to be random. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is live in oakland for us this morning. cornell? >> reporter: yeah. this morning bart officials calling that tragedy the search goes on for the suspect. we can tell you that macarthur bart station reopened about 4:00 a.m. after it was closed last night about 9:45 following what appears to be a random double stabbing. bart officials say two young women believed to be sisters were getting off the train here at the station to meet their father when they were attacked by a man with a knife. one woman was stabbed in the neck. she died. the other woman badly wounded. the suspect took off running. >> they are searching for a suspect who is described a white male in his 20s or 30s.

heavy build and short hair. the suspect fled from the train and down into the concourse level of the station and left the station. >> the safety of the people. they need more police watching and stuff. you see so much stuff happen on bart. >> reporter: bart riders definitely feeling uneasy this morning. the woman who survived the attack is listed in stable condition at a hospital this morning. bart stays says it's reviewing surveillance video footage from the incident. any witnesses encouraged to call bart police. live in oakland, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> thank you. we have just learned a second victim has now died following that mass shooting in toronto. authorities gave the update only about an hour ago. 12 people are hurt. the gunman was killed in a shoot-out as well with police after opening fire in a busy street last night. >> [ bleep ].

>> witnesses said they heard between 20 and 30 shots fired. the shootings took place in an area known as greek town. the injured include a girl under the age of 10. >> shocking. absolutely shocking. this is a street where people walk every day to go do their groceries, have dinner, an ice cream, sit in the square and enjoy their summer and it's absolutely devastating. >> police right now saying they know nothing about the gunman or why he opened fire. investigators have not determined yet if this was an act of terrorism. the suspect in a deadly standoff at an l.a. trader joe's is expected in court today. family members say a feud between a man and his grandmother led to a deadly hostage situation. police say 28-year-old gene atkins shot his grandmother during an argument on saturday. he forced his girlfriend into a car and led police on a chase that ended at a trader joe's.

a standoff lasted for several hours before atkins surrendered. when it was over, the store's manager was dead. a neighbor says this whole thing began over a dispute about tv. >> my neighbor's daughter told me that she went back -- her mother went back inside to tell her grandson, you know, he had too many tvs on, something in that sort and right after that she heard gun shots. >> the grandmother is in the hospital and a cousin says she had been unhappy with atkins having his girlfriend live with them. a desperate search under way right now for a missing midwest college student. she has ties here to the bay area. 20-year-old mollie tibbetts spent part of her childhood in the glenview neighborhood before moving with her family to iowa. she was seen going out for a jog in brooklyn, iowa, wednesday night. friends and volunteers have been searching for mollie, combing corn fields where she's known to run and her mother spoke to us by phone.
