tonight, a horrifying killing playing out on security camera footage. a parking lot confrontation ends in the death of a father in front of his three children. and the man who instigated the confrontation is walking away uncharged. protected by the controversial stand your ground law that some say is standing in the way of justice. here's abc's steve ose uh zahni. >> that was my high school sweetheart. and it hurts so bad. >> reporter: for brittany jacobs there are no words that will ease her pain after logs the love of her life and the father of her children outside this florida convenience store. her boyfriend 28-year-old markeis mc who said he fired his gun in self-defense. >> what do we want? justice! >> the shooting has lit up the streets. >> confrontation between the two men turned into a shooting. >> testing the stand your ground

law. >> reporter: and poured gas on the fiery debate over controversial stand your ground laws. >> now! >> it was around 3:30. so you know that's a busy time, people getting off of works work. >> reporter: jacobs says she and her boyfriend needed something at the convenience store thursday afternoon. the store's security cameras were recording it all. >> i'm going around the first parking space at this time which is a handicapped parking spot. my manned markeis gets out and my son markeis jr. get out and they go in the store. i'm sitting in the car with a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old. >> reporter: after about 20 minutes she says she sees a silver jeep pull around and then this man, michael drejka, steps out and walks around her car. >> you know, i'm feeling scared around this time because i don't know this man. he goes to the front of my car. he seen that i'm parked in a handicapped spot, which i'm clearly very aware of. >> reporter: they start exchanging words. it gets angry. >> this man is now yelling at me and telling me to move my f-ing

car. markeis comes out, pushes the man and tells him to get away from his girl. markeis steps back because now markeis is in danger. >> reporter: the man he just pushed pulls a gun from his pocket, and in a flash he pulls the trigger. >> everybody by this time is panicking. >> reporter: her boyfriend stumbles back into the store. their 5-year-old son is watching his father die. markeis mcglockton is pronounced dead at the hospital. >> it's a memory that's always going within with my 5-year-old. my three kids will be without a father. >> reporter: she says what happened the next day blew her mind. the pinellas county sheriff's department announced it was not charging or arresting michael drejka. >> under these circumstances we cannot make an arrest. >> reporter: police say he was standing his ground. >> the law on stand your ground is clear, and the florida legislature has spoken on this. >> the law is extremely subjective. if they believe reasonably that they are in harm's way, they can

use force and even deadly force to protect themselves. >> reporter: brittany jacobs says her boyfriend was defending her. >> who as a real man will see another man arguing with his girl? like who wouldn't stand up and defend their lady? >> reporter: there are reports that this isn't drejka's first time getting into an argument over a parking space. >> just to argue, just to find someone to argue with. >> reporter: the owner of the convenience store says he had to call the police a month ago after drejka got into a shouting match with this man.ot me, called me [ bleep ] and stuff like that. i think it's a racial issue. >> reporter: but police say the history doesn't matter. >> what's relevant is not whether this guy's a good guy, nice guy, or whether he's a jerk. what's relevant, was he in fear of further bodily harm? >> i think stand your ground laws have become controversial. if the police believe that there is probable cause that someone used the stand your ground law,

they can't make an arrest. >> reporter: in 2005 florida was the first state to put stand your ground laws on the books. and since then more than 33 states have passed similar laws. people who support them say they allow homeowners, for example, to protect themselves from robbers and other criminals. >> i've just been broken into. three men. two i've shot in my house. >> reporter: it's what happened in broken arrow, oklahoma last year. >> are they bleeding? >> yes. i believe one's -- one's down, one's still talking to get here now. >> reporter: that's zach peters locked inside his bedroom after shooting at the three teenagers who broke into his home. >> what did you shoot them with? >> my ar-15. >> reporter: all three of the teens died. peters was not charged with a crime. >> it is the opinion of this office that zachary peters acted justifiably and in accordance with his rights as an oklahoma citizen when he used deadly force to defend his home. >> reporter: attorney gerald griggs says in his experience

race matters in who can use the self-defense laws. white defendants yes. black defendants not so much, he says. >> do you think the law's useful? >> i think in certain cases it's useful. but i think in certain cases the effect is discriminatory. >> so should it be on the books? >> you know, i've always been a proponent of self-defense. i believe in self-defense. but i believe that self-defense should apply in all communities regardless of race or ethnic brourngsd sexual orie background, sexual orientation. >> reporter: he feels police shouldn't be making the call, that each shooter should initially be arrested sxwlp a large majority of the cases against african-americans are not resolved appropriately. >> reporter: but saying you were standing your ground doesn't automatically mean the shooter avoids prosecution. just ask curtis reeves. >> what did you do with that pistol? >> i shot him. >> reporter: in 2014 the 75-year-old retired police officer shot and killed 43-year-old chad olsen during an argument at this florida movie

theater. >> why did you shoot him? >> at that point it was his life or mine. >> reporter: the two were arguing because olsen was using his cell phone during the previews of the movie. in court reeves said he fired in self-defense and said he felt threatened for his life because olsen was younger and taller. >> he was getting ready to punch me, and i perceived that at some point, and that's when the pistol came out. >> reporter: but at a pretrial hearing the judge wasn't buying it, saying reeves was anything but afraid. olsen's wife nicole, who wassing next to him, says her husband was using the phone to reach their babysitter. >> can nobody in the world stand up in a movie theater without having to fear that they are in jeopardy of losing their life? >> reporter: she was shot in the hand by the bullet that killed her husband. reeves goes on trial for second degree murder this february. in pinellas county florida the state attorney will now investigate the case. >> prosecutors and law enforcement officers don't like stand your ground laws. it was really clear in florida when it was passed in 2002,

it's the largest lawsuit to date against usc's former campus gynecologist. more than 50 women joining the chorus of voices alleging lewd harassment and sexual assault spanning nearly three decades. the suit accusing the distinguished university also of trying to preserve its reputation by protecting a predator. >> there is some kind of concern and fear and shame that i allowed him to do that. >> please just get this over with. >> he practically i would say rammed his fingers inside of me. >> reporter: it's the latest avalanche in the "me too" revolution. these women coming out of the shadows, speaking out for the first time, calling out this man. >> dr. george tyndall is accused of improperly photographing female students during exams.

>> claiming the university ignored complaints of sexual abuse. >> reporter: for nearly 30 years potentially thousands of women saw him at the university of southern california's student health clinic. >> this was not unknown. and yet nothing was done. so i feel it's our obligation, our duty to speak out. >> reporter: the lawsuit alleges sexual harassment, abuse, and assault by dr. tyndall as well as negligence on the part of usc. one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, with a storied football program and a global effective of proud trojans. >> yeah. absolutely in school. it was the perfect blend of social and also academic. >> i was born and raised in a very small town, and usc was considered very prestigious. usc gave some scholarships, and it just opened it up. >> reporter: amanda davis was a young single mom when her routine exam took an unexpected turn when she says a naked photo was taken. >> did it seem odd to you that a doctor's asking to tack a naked

photo of you? >> i think there was something deep down inside of me that felt a little off. but having been raised from a small town and grew up very trusting, that's not something you question when there's a doctor in authority. then i felt extremely stupid and embarrassed. and didn't really know what to do. >> reporter: rising senior brendan heyer wanted a test for sexually transmitted disease after she says she was sexually assaulted. >> i was a virgin at the time i was raped. i'd never been to a gien college jicht before. i didn't know what to expect. >> you'd never had an exam before. >> no. >> it was then she says he assaulted her. >> when you say molested her what do you mean by that? >> rubbing up the clitoris. >> unwanted. zblun wanted. >> touching. >> in brennan's case she was there was a nurse chaperone in the room, at least in the beginning. >> she was just there, and she didn't really do anything until

she said that she was uncomfortable and left. and what was so surprising to me was you're uncomfortable? >> such an abandonment. >> this is happening to me. why do you get to leave? >> reporter: brennan wasn't even born when dana lowey says she went to see dr. tyndall in the '90s as a ph.d. candidate. >> i have a small rose tattoo on the inside miff thigh, and he said oh, a picture for me. and that immediately created an atmosphere of, again, false intimacy, inappropriateness. >> a little lascivious. >> yes. so then he asked me about contraception. and i said i don't need any. and then he pride. i said, well, i am in a comm committed relationship with a woman. and again, the whole demeanor was salacious. then he asked me whether all lesbians hated men. >> reporter: jennifer mckenzie says dr. tyndall made inappropriate comments as well as inappropriate touching. >> he proceeded to put his thumb

on my clitoris and his fingers in my vagina with a very calculated kind of menacing approach to me. it was very intimidating. i just wanted to get out of there. >> reporter: abc news chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton has been a gynecologist for 14 years. >> this is an area of medicine that by its definition, by its very nature is the most vulnerable, intimate part of a woman's body. so any kind of subjective or lewd or lascivious or insinuating comment with a sexual undertone is a glaring red flag. >> what advice would you give a patient if alarm bells go off? >> to stop the exam immediately. trust your instincts. speak up. sit up. get dressed. walk out. you can always fix the medical issue. and if something did happen that made you feel uncomfortable, you certainly don't have anything to apologize for. >> at its core this is a case

about abuse of power, an abuse of authority, and an abuse of trust. >> reporter: andy rubenstein, their lead attorney, says the complaints show a pattern of behavior. >> when the numbers started going up and the calls started coming in, i realized that this was a crisis. >> reporter: the usc allegations came to light after the "los angeles times" acting on a tip began digging into why usc allowed dr. tyndall to quietly resign last year. >> around june of 2016 usc put dr. tyndall on leave, paid leave, and thus began a lengthy investigation into all the misconduct claims against him. usc did not file a medical board complaint against him until this year. and they didn't tell students >> rorr:itn f months the area cascade of personal accounts from current and former students and nurses. >> and among the most serious charges under investigation are digital penetration. so unlawfully inserting fingers into a woman during these pelvic

exams. >> reporter: the los angeles police department tells us they've received nearly 200 reports of misconduct. it's unclear if dr. tyndall will face criminal charges. but lapd is actively investigating at least 30 cases. he's also facing numerous civil lawsuits. but dr. tyndall maintains his innocence, telling abc news in a statement from his lawyer, "dr. tyndall is confident that when the facts are known, particularly when experts in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology are consulted, it will be clear that his practice of medicine at usc was consistent with the standard of care for such examinations. he is clear that he engaged in no criminal conduct." >> this is the mindset of a man who is taking advantage of a culture of silence, a culture of people who have been programmed to be tough, hard-working students. >> in the court filing there's a description of a stash of

photos, of naked women, of women's genitalia that he had in his box. what was your reaction when you heard that? >> disgust. and wondering if i'm in there somewhere. >> you said trojan women are tough. what's been the hardest part of all this for you? >> it was difficult because i had to tell my family and specifically my 21-year-old daughter and tell her what happened. and initially that was hard. but then afterwards she said, "mom, i'm so proud of you." >> he wouldn't have gotten away with it if usc had stepped up. they were protecting a predator. >> reporter: the revelations creating an uproar at usc. a petition calling for president max nikias to resign. he agreed to step down in may. >> i don't think it's enough. i think a symbolic resignation is meaningless unless there's change from within. >> reporter: in response to our request for comment usc telling us, "the university is conducting a thorough investigation into this matter. we will be seeking a prompt and

fair resolution that is respectful to our former students. we are committed to providing the women of usc with the best, most thorough and respectful health care services of any university." >> do you think dr. tyndall should be practicing medicine? >> i have a hard time calling him dr. tyndall at this point. but i'll leave that to the medical board to decide. >> reporter: the trojan school motto, fight on, carries new meaning for these alums who say they see this as an opportunity to champion real change. >> you want a seat at the table. >> yes. >> a voice at the process. >> i do. >> this is your dream school we're talking about. a little disillusioned? >> a little disillusioned. >> but i hear hope. >> yeah, absolutely. >> if it's a family, the trojan family, then it's very dysfunctional. but the hope is that we can start an intervention and hopefully make things right again. up next, behind this curtain is the ultimate puppy surprise.
