meteorologist mike nicco for the forecast. is it going to be a nice day? >> yes, a very diverse day, with 60s at the coast to nearly 100 in some of our inland communities. so it's going to be a typical summer day with a little extra heat thrown in. we have some low clouds along the coast. some of that is spilling into the bay and into the north bay valleys. you can see the visibility down to 3 in petaluma. reports of mist around half moon day that will continue through 9:00. temperatures in the mid 50s to 60s. about the same as yesterday. we'll hang out at the 60s at the coast. go from 70 around the bay and 83 to 94 inland, back in the 70s and 80s by 7:00. let's bring alexis in and check out the morning commute. >> seeing a little bit of mist or fog on some of our traffic cameras too this morning including the bay bridge camera. not terrible, especially down at the road surface level, but we have a dense fog advisory in effect for golden gate this morning. traffic moving okay here, but further back, past treasure

island, we still have a disabled vehicle blocking the left center lane. that's impacting drive times. highway 4 to the maze, you're okay there at 22 minutes. but 21 across the bay bridge once you make it past the metering lights, and southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, still looking great in the green at nine minutes. i have a mass transit update for you. we'll talk about that in ten minutes. >> thank you. we have breaking news in san francisco. right now, san francisco police investigating a deadly shooting in the city's mission district. it's all happening at 16th and mission. san francisco police say they responded to the area about 3:00 this morning. and found two men with gunshot wounds. they were both taken to the hospital where one of those men has died. investigators are still at the scene right now, so expect traffic to be impacted if you're driving through that area. >> and developing news in oaand. cuse of deaytain t macarthur b. station. this cell phone video shows police arresting 27-year-old john cowell at the pleasant hill

b.a.r.t. station last night. investigators are still searching for a motive in what seems to be an unprovoked attack. cowell stabbed two sisters, nia and latifa wilson. >> 18-year-old nia died. her older sister survived with stab wounds to her neck. last night, family, friends, supporters as well held a vigil at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. that's where amy hollyfield is live for us this morning. >> look what they left behind here. an impressive memorial to this young woman here outside the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. it's just a huge sign of love, lots of candles, flowers, and notes. they even spilled over here to this window, this shelter over here, where they wrote rest in peace, nia wilson. we need to protect each other. so lots of expressions of love here at the b.a.r.t. station, and calls for justice. you know, when the vigil started

last night, b.a.r.t. had not made an arrest, so there was anxiety and frustration when it started. it even turned from vigil to demonstration at one point, spilling into the street with outrage. there was also silence and tears as people remembered nia wilson. her sister told us nia had big plans for a vibrant future. >> wanted to be a lawyer. criminal justice. and she wanted to have a little dance studio. she wanted her own makeup line because that's what she do every day, every single hour. makeup was her thing. >> the sisters were on their way home from a family gathering when the attack happened. it was around 9:45 sunday night at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. she said they were mindsided by a maniac, that they did not know their attacker. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. police are investigating

other recent homicides that happened at b.a.r.t. stations. take a look a these images. police say this man sucker punched another man at the bay fair b.a.r.t. station early saturday morning. the victim fell, hit his head on the cement floor and later died at the hospital. and a 20-year-old man accused in a fight at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station could face serious charges because police say two people got into a fight at the station wednesday, and a 51-year-old victim suffered a cut to his leg. he later died, and police believe the cut got infected. now, the suspect who was arrested for assault could be facing some more serious charges. >> the short sentence for convicted sex offender brock turner outraged people across the country and got the judge in the case recalled. >> today, turner's attorneys will be in court to appeal the former stanford student's conviction. matt keller is live in stanford. matt. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. the sexual assault took place here on the stanford campus

about 3 1/2 years ago. there was a huge outcry after brock turner was sentenced. judge aaron persky gave him six months in jail. he ended up serving only three months in jail. prosecutors wanted six years. the victim, known as emmy doe, in court, read a statement that went viral around the world sparking outrage and eventually changed to the law. today, the state appellate court is scheduled to hear arguments on both side. kurg to turner's attorney, he was not provided due process at trial because they didn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt that ms. doe had passed a point of general intoxication. and also that the trial court failed to instruct the jury on lesser offenses that could have resulted in a different outcome. the district attorney said turner received a fair trial and was justly convicted. today's hearing starts at 10:00 a.m. in san jose. reporting live at stanford university, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you.

happening today, the bay area expected to get about a billion dollars in state money. it's to finance two major water projects. the california water commission will build a new dam and expand the pacheco res it will provide for 650,000 people for a year. it's one of the largest expansions across the state in 58 years. the water district expects work to start in six years with completion in 2029. >> secretary of state mike pompeo will toib his two-day summit with australian leaders. abc 7 news was at stanford's hoover institution as pompeo and australian minister of foreign affairs julie bishop posed for cameras. their meeting focused on tariffs and trade with china, national security strategy, north korea, and iran. secretary of defense james mattis is expected to attend today. >>n uent ch f bay college students with bay

6:15. welcome back. developing news out of greece this morning. at least 60 people are dead after a raging wildfires. some of the killed literally running into the ocean to escape the flames. all of this happening in a resort town about 30 miles outside athens. winds over 50 miles per hour, fanning the flames. it's the deadliest fire season to hit greece in more than a decade. new at 6:00 a.m., we're hearing from the boyfriend of a missing college student with some bay areaifies. >> 20-year-old molly tibbets disappeared nearly a week ago after going out for a run in brooklyn, iowa. her boyfriend says a coworker called the next morning to say that tibbets didn't show up to work. she left her wallet and i.d. at their apartment. >> i look back on my messages and she hadn't opened a single

elevation. that's why we have mist at the coast and patchy fog out there, but the east bay valleys, the areas that will be warmest, just a little hazy. fading clouds, warming inland today. tonight, not as cloudy, and the highs will slip back to average. we have an area of low pressure to the west with a counterclockwise flow. high to our west, clockwise flow. that's steering or pumping all the heat from the desert up into our neighborhoods. at least on the periphery like around los gatos, morgan hill and gilroy. mid to upper 90s. closer to walter, the milder it will be. we have upper 70s to low 80s for most of the peninsula. 74 in millbrae to 84 in redwood city. that's your extreme spread. we'll have low to mid 60s along the coast. upper 60s to low 70s in downtown and south san francisco and sausalito. warmer up in the north bay with upper 80s to low 90s. until you get to lakeport and ukiah, triple digits. our first sign this week. mid to upper 70s, middle east of the east bay shore. 80s around hercules and newark

from the flooded cave earlier th h? this mornin1 of them have taken their first steps to become ordained as buddhist novices. they'll be living for nine days in a buddhist temple in honor of the former thai navy s.e.a.l. who died during the cave rescue operation on july 6th. i mentioned 11 instead of 12. that's because one of their teammates is christian and he decided instead to attend a local church to perform a separate ceremony. >> we have heard a lot about the struggles of new moms. now new research from the indiana school of medicine sheds light on the challenges for new dads. the results are part of an admittedly small survey. it found rates of depression were about the same for new moms and dads. abc's dr. jennifer ashton is talking about this on "good morning america." she said studies have shown the rate of post partum depression for dads is as high as 1 in 4. >> women tend to internalize their symptoms.

men tend to externalize them. their manifestations are things we can see. they're more likely to engage in drinking, abusing substances, pills. it's more visible, in general. >> i think that number would surprise people, that it's so high. dr. ashton said it's important for dads to talk with health care providers. there are support groups, talk therapy, and medication to help out. >> president trump is about to battle california over its emissions standards. bloomberg news reports the white house this week plans to strip california of its clean air act waiver. the waiver allows the state to apply stricter car emissions standards and promote the sale of electric cars. local officials say california will fight back. >> certainly, we always want the support of the federal government, but in absence of federal regulations or federal support, california and the bay area are going to continue to push forward with clean car regulations and clean air regulations to reduce not only air pollutants but also green house gas emissios. >> analysts say the move will

24 split, everything is looking good there. we had an earlier incident on the bay bridge. that's gone and things are starting to bounce back. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 34 minutes. the problem before the metering lights is gone, and the problem on the bay bridge is gone too. that's all the way down to 11 minutes. you're back in the green. southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, still looking good. coming in at nine minutes. >> thanks, alexis. new this morning, one person is dead following a violent traffic collision in campbell. a minivan rear ended a car in hamilton avenue last night. both vehicles caught fire. firefighters tried to get a person out of the minivan but could not. three other people were hurt. one of them seriously. a southbound stretch of highway 17 was closed for more than an hour. >> developing news this morning. b.a.r.t. police say this is the man responsible for a deadly stabbing at macarthur station this week. cell phone video recorded the moment police took john cowell into custody after a 21-hour

manhunt. >> amy hollyfield live in oakland with details on how police found him. amy. >> first, reggie, let me show you this impressive sight at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. a lot of commuters stopping on their way in to take a look and pay their respects. a huge memorial here for nia wilson. a giant display full of flowers and candles. a lot of notes showing love for the victim and her family. on to the investigation. there is cell phone video from a barlt rider of the arrest of 27-year-old john cowell. take a look. this is at the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station last night. they were able to track him down through tips from b.a.r.t. passengers. he's accused of stabbing two women, sisters latifa wilson and nia wilson. nia died from her stab wounds. police say the attack appears random. they have not found a motive. the police chief says the killer just surprised his victims from behind. >> it happened at the snap of the fingers, at the drop of a pen.

that quick. the officers were in the station, and as soon as they were notified, they reacted. and they responded very, very quickly. but other than being right next to where the incident occurred, still not sure it could have been prevented. >> cowell has a criminal history, according to our media partner, it includes a restraining order from kaiser hospital where he's accused of threatening to kill an employee. he's also served time for robbery. he's now in the alameda county skral. the b.a.r.t. police chief said in his 30 years of experience, this is probably the most vicious attack he has ever seen. reporting live in oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. that victim so beautiful, i feel so sorry for her family. her sister saying, quote, i'm her protector and i feel like i didn't protect her. that's coming from latifa wilson who spoke about her sister, nia. >> latifa was also stabbed and still doesn't have a reason why.

wilson says she and two of her sisters were on their way home from a family gathering sunday night. that's when b.a.r.t. police say 27-year-old john cowell attacked them with a knife. latifa said cowell stabbed her 18-year-old sister nia in the neck first, and he didn't say a word. >> and i looked back. and he was wiping off his knife and stood at the stairs and just looked. she didn't do nothing to nobody. i didn't do nothing to nobody. and for this to happen is just outright crazy. >> latifa has stitches in her neck from the attack. the third sister has bruises. >> mayor libby schaaf says oakland police are making every resource available to help b.a.r.t. police in their investigation. she says more needs to be done to keep b.a.r.t. riders safe. >> obviously, police presence is only one factor that contributes to a safe environment. so that is our job, to look at

all of the different ways that we can create a safe and comfortable environment for all of our commuters. >> the mayor went on to say the arrest of james cowell is the first step in bringing some justice for nia wilson and her family. >> we have more reaction to the b.a.r.t. stabbing on her website and on our news app. you can watch the vigil for nia wilson and the appeal from her stepfather for calm in the community. enable push alerts on the app to get updates on the investigation and breaking news as it happens. president trump is threatening to revoke the security clearances of six high-ranking former national security officials. and on that list are former cia director john brennan, former fbi director james comey, and four former top national security and intelligence officials from the obama and bush administrations. each had been critical of the president's relationship with russian president vladimir putin. >> they politicized and in some cases actually monetized their public service and their

security clearances and making baseless accusations of improperly contact with russia or being influenced by russia against the president is extremely inappropriate. >> comey and his deputy andrew mccabe lost their clearance after they were fired. the white house says at this point, it has no plans to strip security clearances from former president obama and vice president joe biden. >> happening now, fire crews are battling an aggressive new wildfire in northern california. the car fire is burning near redding and shasta county. it's charred 2500 acres of land since it began yesterday afternoon. it's only 5% contained. structures in the town of french gulch are threatened and now the entire town is under a mandatory evacuation order. a stretch of highway 299 is closed. >> and there are more than a dozen fires burning across the state right now. you can see where they are on this map here. firefighters are also struggling to control a big fire that is burning near yosemite national park. the ferguson fire has burned more than 36,000 acres since it

broke out on the 13th. it is only 6% contained -- or 16% contained. the weather is about to make the fight even more challenging. a heat wave is expected to last through thursday. one firefighter died in a bull dozing accident on the fire line, and six others have been hurt. >> looters who target homeowners that are evacuated because of disasters like wildfires will fa face harsher penalties. governor brown has signed a bill into law that expands the law into times where people are evacuated. the increases penalties for anyone who is convicted of looting to include more jail time and fines. some looters have been found posing as firefighters and other emergency workers. on a related note, reggie mentioned a heat wave expected through thursday. due to the high temperatures, calicy has issued a flex alert to conserve energy, and consumers are asked to limit

electricity use from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 tonight. and again tomorrow during those times. officials say that is when air conditioners are at peak use. other tips to conserve energy are turning off unnecessary lights, not using major appliances during the alert, and setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher. here in the bay area, we kind of have a hodgepodge of temperatures, right? >> about a 30 to 35 degree spread from the coast to the inland neighborhoods. it's going to be a night of probably leftovers at our house to save from turning the stove or the anything like that on to keep the heat down in the house. here's a look at the fog. yeah, really thick over the golden gate bridge. alexis tells me chp issued a fog advisory. you can see why. that's going to hang around until about 9:00 and then it will start to lift. if you're driving, watch out for that, and also up around petaluma. ferry rides going to be gusty north of the bay bridge and cool to hot this morning to the afternoon at your mass transit

pg&e to pay darryl woodruff nearly $350,000 in compensation. they released a statement that reads in part, pg&e terminated mr. woodruff's employment because it found he had falsely reported multiple times that safety work had been completed in various areas of san francisco when in fact it had not. we are aware of the jury's decision, and are currently evaluating our next legal steps. the short sentence for convicted sex offender brock turner outraged people across the country and got the judge in the case recalled. >> today, turner's attorneys will be in court to appeal the former stanford student's conviction. matt keller live for us at stanford. matt. >> reggie, the hearing is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. this sexual assault rocked the stanford community and eventually led to changes in the law. judge erin persky sentenced brock turner to six months in jail. turner ended up serving only three months. prosecutors wanted six years. the victim's impact statement
