taped, asking for refreshments.m >> reporter: and now a critical part of the tape that's in dispute, cohen and trump seemingly discussing "the national enquirer's" purchase of the story from former "playboy" model karen mcdougal who claims she had an affair with trump. >> i need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info recording our friend david. >> reporter: david, according to sources, is apparently trump's friend david pecker, ceo of american media incorporated which owns "the national enquirer." american media paid $150,000 for mcdougal's story, but then killed it before the election. cohen and trump then discuss setting up a shell company to buy the rights to the mcdougal story and perhaps others. >> when it comes time for the financing which will be -- >> listen, what financing? >> we'll have to pay -- >> pay with cash? >> no, no, no, no, i got -- >> reporter: cohen's attorney

suggested trump's mentioning of cash is indicative of someone planning to engage in illegal activity, butorney rudy gliani suggests last night that trump was doing about the conversation, that he wanted any transaction to be handled by check which can be documented and giuliani calling in to fox news. >> we listened to it numerous, numerous times and the transcript makes it quite clear at the end that president trump says, quote, don't pay with cash. >> reporter: this morning the president is tweeting, responding to cohen and the tape. what kind of lawyer would tape a client? so sad. is this a first? never heard of it before. why was the tape so abruptly terminated. george? >> pierre thomas, thank you. we're joined by michael cohen's attorney lanny davis. welcome, good to see you again. you've been working for michael cohen for weeks, haven't spoken out on television. why release the tape now and why come here? >> after a year and a half and recently an intense campaign of disparagement and lies and

smears against michael cohen from the trump camp primarily by mayor giuliani inventing words in a transcript that didn't ever get spoken as you just heard. the word is cash. everybody should listen to the tape and see whether i'm right or not, just listen. >> i do want to get to that. how do you respond to mr. giuliani's claim that it's outrageous that a lawyer was taping his client? >> well, it changes the topic. why did giuliani lie about michael cohen saying that he's the one who said cash just as he lied when he said that donald trump, in fact, didn't say -- >> may be changing the topic but what's the answer, why was he taped? >> michael cohen has an answer as to why he taped conversations and i think he'll have to give that answer himself. i can't reveal that but i will say michael cohen has turned a corner in had is life and he's now dedicated to telling the truth to everyone and we'll see what happens. >> let's get into some specifics

right there. you say he said cash. that seemed to be what i heard as well but it is a little bit garbled. rudy giuliani says he was saying don't pay cash. what if it was cash, what's the significance there? >> it's about lies and truth. giuliani can't make up the words don't pay. i say to everybody who voted for donald trump don't believe me, i'm a democrat. listen to the tape. the words don't pay are not heard. the word cash. so it's not about cash versus not cash. it's about truth, and the power of the truth is what michael cohen now has. no matter what giuliani invents or mayor giuliani invents for a president who's been known to lie, don't believe me, listen to the tape the way john dean had a tape that did in richard nixon. >> you say john dean had a tape that did in richard nixon, the watergate tapes but this deal wasn't consummated. so is there any criminal activity there? >> no, it's about truth. if mr. trump lied about would versus would not in what he said

to putin and he lied about knowing about the mcdougal issue when we know from the tape he did know and lied almost about everything including the message as to what happened in the trump tower meeting which giuliani ultimately had to admit. this is about truth versus lying and ultimately donald trump is going to be done in by the truth. >> i want to play another portion of the tape that i think has some significance that has not been focused on yet. this is the tape of michael cohen speaking with donald trump. >> i need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend, david. >> i was struck by the phrase, all of that info. i mean, we know that david pecker, ami, had paid for karen mcdougal's story but michael cohen is talking about all of that info. so is that information beyond karen mcdougal? >> so i don't know the answer to that other than what i've heard from mr. cohen is under our privilege as an attorney but i will say that it completely disputes the lie that donald trump didn't know about karen mcdougal before this conversation. listen to the tape.

he didn't say what are you talking about? he knew exactly what cohen was talking about and two months later right before the election his press spokesman denied he knew anything about karen mcdougal. if you are a trump voter, you know what a lie is. you don't have to believe me. i repeat, listen to the tape. >> but you're not denying that this could be about things beyond karen mcdougal? >> there are things they were worried about that they wanted to take back and that was what the conversation was about. you heard mr. trump say, yes, we don't know what will happen to this other information. but we know that trump used the word cash and people who use cash, rudy giuliani knows when he's u.s. attorney, are either drug dealers or mobster answer that's the word cash. >> michael avenatti has spoken out, stormy daniels attorney. i want to put up his tweet. mr. davis is a good lawyer but his client is not innocent nor is he a victim. co-conspirator, dishonest thug, continues to refuse to come clean. they are playing you and aiming for a pardon. where is the rest of the evidence and tapes? two key things, is mr. cohen

still seeking a pardon from donald trump? >> no. and mr. avenatti is in litigation. people in litigation say things about one another and settle and everything is fine so i won't comment on mr. avenatti. thank you for saying something nice about me but what he's saying about cohen is not true but it's part of a litigation attack and that happens between lawyers. >> there are more tapes of donald trump? >> there are certainly more tapes that mr. cohen discussed he normally did in order to take notes, he used his telephone. beyond that i'm not going to comment. >> lanny davis, thanks very much. cecilia. thanks. we want to turn to president trump this morning. also facing major fallout from his tariffs, his administration announcing a $12 billion bailout for farmers caught in the middle but the backlash fierce including from republicans. abc's terry moran is at the white house with the very latest on this. terry, even the president's allies say it seems in this trade war, it might only be getting worse. >> reporter: that's right. the president says be patient, good morning, cecilia.

free trade used to be a bedrock principle for republicans but donald trump has been a protectionist for decades, now he's president and getting to put tariffs in place and getting stiff blowback, especially from american farmers. a showdown over trade at the white house today as the president sits down to negotiate with the european union. >> making tremendous progress. they're all coming. they don't want to have those tariffs put on them. they are all coming to see us. >> reporter: all this comes as the president tweets, tariffs are the greatest. but not so great for american farmers who have been caught in between the warring sides hit with retaliatory tariffs from trading partners like europe and china. the penalties on soybeans, dairy and pork are costing farmers billions. >> we are directly the people that's being most affected. it's out of our pockets that these millions and millions of dollars will flow. >> reporter: president trump is trying to blunt this self-inflicted wound, offering a $12 billion emergency aid

package to bail out the nation's farmers. the payouts beginning in september just before the midterm elections. but some members of the president's own party have immediately rejected the president's bailout. >> here are farmers who just want to make a living. th'rin our office. they want trade, not aid. from nebraska, a farm state, e tweeted, this trade war is cutting the legs out from under farmers and the white house's plan is to spend $12 billion on gold crutches. the president insists his policies will benefit farmers in key states that help deliver him to the white house. >> the farmers will be the biggest beneficiary. watch. we're opening up markets. you watch what's going to happen. just be a little patient. >> reporter: so today when the president meets with the head of the european union, the subject will be the next trade war over imported automobiles. the consumer could be in the crossfire of this and the national automobile dealers association predicting the cost of a domestic car could go up almost $3,000, and an imported car, almost $7,000, robin.

>> all right. terry, thank you. now to that severe summer weather. take a look at the map. this morning 20% of the country is facing either excessive heat or dangerous flooding as temperatures soar into the triple digits out west, torrential rain here in the east. abc's david kerley has the latest. >> reporter: this morning it is the triple threat, flooding, fires and heat. the roads continuing to buckle from the pummeling rain. in colorado, the moment is caught as a car falls into a sinkhole crashing 15 feet onto a drainpipe. and new images of the mudslides there triggered by two inches of rainfall in just 20 minutes. and here in the baltimore area, floodwaters continue to tear through the streets. this is the wettest july in baltimore's history and with another inch or two coming, there's a worry about the strain it's putting on these flood channels. two adults and a student had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming stranded on this school bus by the floodwaters.

in north carolina, five people rescued after the floodwaters there surrounded their workplace. and in the west, it is the heat and fires. yosemite national park closing down during peak tourist season because of the fast-spreading fires. more than 3,000 structures in jeopardy. >> strictly for visitor safety we have to close the roads. >> reporter: evacuees are being told get out while they still can. this is the scene of one of those water rescues, this minivan overnight thought it could get through the deep waters, but it didn't make it. tow truck just arrived to get it out of here. the road just has been re-opened. look behind me. you can see how much water, nearly 14 inches in parts of maryland, george. it's raining, another day of rain on the forecast, which is why the flood watches remain in effect. >> just a soaking. david, thanks very much. we move on to the latest on the deadly trader joe's standoff. newly released footage shows the high-speed chase and gun battle that ended with a store employee dead. police now say she was killed in

the crossfire by a police bullet. abc's kayna whitworth has the story. >> reporter: this morning, just released police video showing the dramatic chase leading to that deadly confrontation at a los angeles trader joe's. the suspect, gene atkins, seen allegedly shooting at these officers through the back window of his vehicle. >> shots fired. broadcast. >> reporter: gunfire erupting as he runs out of the crashed car. firing at officers. >> hey, shots fired. get down! >> reporter: the officers returning fire, yelling at bystanders to take cover as they run behind a cement wall. >> hey, get away! get away from the window! >> reporter: now the lapd revealing that the store manager, melyda corado, was accidentally shot and killed by a bullet fired from one of the officer's guns as she ran to the front of the store. >> like not even three seconds later she's running back in the store with her hands up, just,

run, run, run! and she just collapsed and that's when the gunman turned around and told one of the employees pick her up and take her outside but don't come back. >> i just remind you as you watch this of the tragedy that unfolded in those moments and two yog ficers' sitions d k you yo court tuesday charged with over 30 counts including one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder. he is being held on $18.7 million bail. the suspect's family saying he has a history of mental illness. >> we just never expected anything like this to happen and if i would have seen any signs before, i would have definitely got him evaluated and this situation, you know, could have been avoided. >> reporter: he did not enter a plea in court but will appear again later next month. trader joe's telling us the

emotional track comes just three months after she wrote this celebratory post on instagram. today is a very special day for me. i'm officially celebrating six years of sobriety. >> the last time i did an interview this long i was on cocaine. >> reporter: and in 2017, lovato openly discussed her personal story in the documentary "simply complicated" talking about the first time she relapsed in 2011. >> i wasn't ready to get sober. nobody knew. i went on, like, a bender of two months where i was using daily. >> reporter: earlier this year with her mother by her side, the pop star spoke to michael about using her sobriety to help others. >> one of the reasons why i stayed sober is because i want people to know it is possible for you to get help and to recover. it's something that's very important that people know that you're able to ask for help these days and people will help you. >> reporter: overnight an outpouring of support from fellow entertainers and friends, ariana grande writing, i love you.

ant. we all know how strong you are, demi. lovato was scheduled to perform this friday in atlantic city but that concert has now been canceled. her representative also says that some of the information being reported is incorrect and that the family is asking for privacy, not speculation. they say her health and recovery is most important right now. robin. >> it truly is. all right, linsey, thank you very much. joining us now is dr. drew pinsky, of course, an addiction expert and host of "dr. drew midday live" on knbc radio. always good to see you. >> good morning, robin. >> looking for your perspective on this. what did you think when you first heard? >> interesting to hear the family say the speculation is probably inaccurate. the first thing i thought there was a report of heroin and i thought that did not make sense to me. she's not had that history with heroin. she has had opiates, but not heroin. i didn't buy that, number one. we know she was unconscious, given narcan which is what the fire department does when they come upon an unconscious person. she is an addict and i thought the second thought i had was what a lovely person.

i mean, we all have known her. she is this unbelievably dear person and she, indeed, needs our prayers and respect and then my next thought was, this is drug addiction. it's a chronic illness marked by relapses. this happens. nothing wrong with this. this is just part of the course of her illness and it's chronic and she'll get better. she will get well again. this idea, robin, that people have that it's something sort of one and done, you go and get treated for 30 days like a car wash and magically get well, nothing further could be from the truth. >> not uncommon six years sober and as i was saying when we took the break i've had cancer, i get cancer again. no one blames me or looks at me and points if you relapse with cancer but with this, there's finger-pointing. >> it's weird. as though it's a volitional thing or it's a weakness or something which is absolutely bizarre and deadly disease just like cancer. people have to remember that. if you have an opiate addiction you're more likely to die from that than most cancers. it's a serious illness, but on average it takes multiple years and multiple treatments to get one year of sobriety.

just to get one year. so the fact that she had six years, she has been doing -- she is way ahead of the curve already. i am certain she'll get back into the game. she'll get back into her sobriety and she will be fine. there may be other relapses ahead. that doesn't mean anything. that means she has addiction. and by the way she has multiple psychiatric conditions, right? >> bipolar. >> eating disorder that makes it more complicated. the other thing that her case sort of points out, even once you treat the addiction, then you have got to deal with some of the underlying stuff there. she has trauma, mood disorder and can't deal with any of that until your sobriety is well established. >> what do you say not only to demi and her family but others who go through relapse, what do they need to do to regain that sobriety? >> bottom line, get back into the program, everybody, family in al-anon, back to the mutual aid societies and team of mental health professionals and get it going again. don't back off. don't cave. people we lose are the ones that drift away from their treatment team and get deeply into their drug addiction. just get back into the process. this is just how it goes.

demi lovato is recovering this morning, hospitalized after an apparent overdose. drug overdoses are becoming an increasing problem here in the u.s. claiming the lives of more than 63,000 people in 2016 and, jen, this is just -- it's not uncommon. >> that's right. and this is on our national radar, medically, socially, because it is so common, but we have to remember that relapse is really not the exception. it's so common it's almost the rule. we know that people battling addiction, living with addiction about 40% to 60% of them will have at least one relapse and i think the key here is that we need to think of this like what it is, a medical condition. if we have a patient with diabetes and their blood sugar is well controlled for a long time and then all of a sudden becomes poorly controlled we don't kick them out of the office and say forget it. you're doomed. that's what we do in medicine. this is a marathon, not a sprint. when you hear about things like a relapse, yes, it's sad. yes, it's scary, but it doesn't mean that successful treatment long-term is not possible.

>> what do we know medically about addiction? >> we don't know a lot. we do know some things like many things in medicine there is a genetic or familial predisposition. if you have it in your family you're more likely to be affected by it. it's not your destiny, but it can be more common, and we know a fair amount about the changes that go on in the brain in people who battle addiction whether it's a substance or whether it's a behavior. there's a reward center in the brain that releases these chemicals when exposed to that substance. people who become dependent and addicted need more and more of that substance to trigger the same feeling and that's when you can get into trouble with a lethal overdose, whether it's accidental or intentional. your brain just needs more and more of the same thing. >> remind us of the treatment options. >> more treatment options than ever and that has to be the message when we hear tragic or scary stories whether outpatient therapy or impatient more intensive rehab, psychotherapy,

medication. there are complimentary therapies. it'sot o size fits all. it's about finding what works for the individual and sticking it out long-term. this is something that people have to deal with every single day like having brown eyes. >> can we reaffirm that because or reconfirm that because there's so many people when -- if it's any other illness as you said, you used diabetes as an example, that it's not them not having willpower. >> no. >> or anything like that. >> i have not met any patient battling addiction in my medical career, and every doctor will see them, not just addiction specialists, who wants to be addicted. so this is something that has nothing to do with commitment, dedication, willpower, a drive to recover or heal. this is something that is medically inside them. it's no different than cancer, diabetes, so they need our medical support. they need our social support. >> all right. jen, thanks so much. cecilia. thanks, robin. we turn to serena williams. she's blasting the u.s. anti-doping agency. the 23-time grand slam winner

tweeting that she was being drug tested yet again and she's accusing the agency of discrimination. abc's diane macedo is here with more. good morning. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. serena williams has had more than enough, apparently. after it was revealed she's been drug tested more than any other american tennis player williams posted on twitter that she's been randomly tested again. now she's questioning just how random these tests really are. she's one of the top tennis players in the world. and this morning, serena williams is taking aim at the u.s. anti-doping agency, accusing officials of discrimination. williams writes on twitter, and it's that time of day to get randomly drug tested and only test serena. out of all the players it's been proven i'm the one getting tested the most. discrimination? i think so. at least i'll be keeping the sport clean. #staypositive. the 23-time grand slam champion has been at odds with tennis' regulating body over the last few months speaking out at wimbledon over the number of times she's asked to give a sample for drug testing.

that's a whale shark and a whale shark doesn't want to eat me but i have to show you video from yesterday during our rehearsal. there are six species of sharks and manta rays in there. a manta ray came right at me, took my mask off. the guys that work here said they have never seen this happen before. they had to do a safety regulator in my mouth and had to do a safety up to the top of the ocean -- top of the tank. i've seen dange these ys are the pros and these guys is the place where you'll learn so much more about the whale shark. this mysterious beast we have so much more coming up about. for now, though, i'll leave you. this is our first "gma" moment

reach out to people that have the type of roles that you might be interested in one day and just do an informational interview with them. >> reporter: miranda is looking for an internship in the film industry but potential employers might not know that. >> you need to take advantage of the headline and the summary. the headline is prime real estate. it's an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you're looking for. additionally, your summary, think about that as your elevator pitch. >> reporter: linkedin recommends a summary having at least 40 words to attract hiring managers. >> it's a great way to demonstrate and summarize who you are as a professional and who you want to be and what experience you have. >> reporter: now for isabel's profile. she's missing a few key details. >> you have incredible experience. but what you need to do is tell people what you did at these roles. demonstrate what experience that you have because likely it is relevant to the other roles. >> reporter: and one more very valuable tip from linkedin.

four whale sharks are in there. the biggest fish on the planet. ginger, how is it going? >> oh, it's going great, george. look at this beautiful world around me. i'm really a part of their world and the largest whale shark that's ever recorded was 60 feet. so you know these guys are giants. each of their beautiful skins has those spotted beauty. they're different. like human fingerprints. so much to learn about whale sharks but guess what, i'm not the only one that got to learn or be in the tank. mr. wonderful did too from "shark tank." the sharks from "shark tank" are taking the plunge. in a new special for discovery, each business shark is vying for a $50,000 denation for the shark preservation group that they're representing. may the best shark win. kevin o'leary, aka mr. wonderful is all boardroom business, even in an underwater tank at the georgia aquarium. donning a custom wet suit and tie. >> all right.

collected in our cotton shirts is weighed as a baseline then we cool down and change into the performance shirts. >> what we want to see is how much sweat these shirts team. >> reporter: these should wick away more sweat for evaporation but -- do i feel cooler? not really. i feel hot and sweaty. >> same for my workout partners. >> do you feel dramatically cooler? >> no. >> reporter: get this, i had a little more sweat in the cooling shirt, about 8% more and then megan and cassie's shirts had double the amount of sweat than their cotton shirts. >> did you feel cooler? >> in the beginning i did but then when i got on to the abs and lunges, i felt like i got warmer. >> same for me. i felt a lot bert than the first shirt but i didn't feel that cooling aspect at all. >> reporter: if the performance shirts are supposed to evacuate vap wait moisture better how come they all collected more sweat? we reached out to the parl

manufacturers. they told "gma" the shirts did what they're designed to do, move the sweat away from the skin and to the outerlaer. lian cotton shirts ric is and w moisture garment f eporaonth t t zo.n't humid room. so to take this into the real world, i work out in t heat. tracy, california, temperature, 85 degrees. with a little breeze the performance shirts do much better than the cotton shirt. this is the least expensive shirt and while i'm not sure i'm any cooler, it's doing a great job of evaporating the sweat. some push-up, lots of brisk walking and i'm definitely sweating. but it seems like it's evaporating really fast. see while stifling humidity may be tough for any shirt to overcome, lighter breathable fabrics can help in the dry heat to keep you from turning into a sweaty mess.

a huge issue around these technical shirts is price. will you be cooler if you buy something that costs more? well, that wasn't generally our experience but as with all clothing, you're paying for a lot of thing, comfort, style, durability, most of those are subjective and up to the buyer to determine what it's worth so, technical shirt because it's light, comfy, cute and maybe even no pit stains. >> that's a plus, becky. thanks a lot. coming up, max frost performs live.
