developing news, a home goes up in flames and neighbors are told to get out as a grass fire explodes near clayton. i'm dan ashley. >> a major road in contra costa county is still closed. >> traffic is stopped in both directions from marsh creek road from morgan territory road to gill drive. >> kate larson is live at a library that's been turned into a temporary shelter. we understand you got some new numbers. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. and there actually are a group of people at the shelter, which is the library, who have been evacuated. and others showing up wondering if they can get home, because there are roads starting to open up tonight. i did just get off the phone with cal fire. they tell me 247 acres have

burned today. the good news, the fire is 20% contained and the forward progress of the fire has been stopped. however, there's still a hundred structures that are threatened. with the glow of fire twinkling in the distance, fire engines on marsh creek road and clayton. anxious residents hoping to get home, lined up further up the two-lane road. >> if it were just an hour or two, that's one thing. but to have it be all night, it just seems really daunting and exhausting. >> the evacuation order is in place for a reason, because there are homes threatened, structures destroyed. >> reporter: sky 7 was overheadar air tankers dropped on vulnerable hillsides and homes. the fire broke out about 3:00 in the afternoon.ndans t flames th more than 200 acres. >> it just collapsed. >> reporter: this woman said several outbuildings on her property burned and that she lost all of her chickens.

>> at a certain point while your property's burning, you might lose your house. it is what it is. >> reporter: this man rode his mountain bike to the evacuation area to help his friends. and all sorts of people drove into the area with horse trailers to evacuate animals. >> if i see a fire and there's a need, i own a horse trailer repair business, i take my trucks and trailers and we go help. >> there was that one home and three out buildings that were destroyed. cal fire tells me, as soon as the sun comes up, they'll get the air support back to fight back the flames even more tomorrow morning. cal firefighters will be spending the night. live in clayton, i'm kate larson, abc7 news. >> kate, thank you. abc7 news viewer matthew hodgen shared this clip with us. he was driving to walnut creek with his wife and 1-year-old child when the flames nearly overtook his car. >> we saw the flames bigger and bigger, and it was windy.

i saw something i've never seen before, but it looked like a fire tornado that starts moving through, away from some of the fire trucks. >> and now let's check in with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya for the weather conditions. >> the conditions are more favorable for the firefighters now, a 30-degree drop in temperature to 74 degrees right now. the humidity has come up considerably. 42%. and the winds right now, calm. this should help the firefighters overnight. but it's going to be a hot one tomorrow afternoon in the clayton area. heat advisory for the east bay hills and the diablo range, and lake and mendocino counties until tomorrow night. i'll be back to let you know how ho hot it's going to get and when you'll get a break from the hot weather coming up. >> sandhya, thanks a lot. the weather a factor in this fire that wee'll talk about now.

part of highway 101 is open now after a fire forced it to close in santa clara county. you can see where the fire broke out in san martin about 4:15 this afternoon. it burned roughly 20 acres. sky 7 flew above the fire when flames gutted buildings and damaged vehicles. the good news, no one was hurt. the smoke forced the highway patrol to close southbound lanes for a time today. you can see all the black smoke. an investigator is working to find out what sparked this blaze. >> so many fires are burning across california tonight, hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate. cornell barnard spoke with an expert about why it seems like there's so many fires in the state right now. >> one fire expert says it's not your imagination, july has been a very busy time for fire and there's a reason for it. new fires from northern california to the mountains of southern california with little containment in sight. the cranston fire growing to

4,700 acres in east l.a. near idyllwild. 500 firefighters are battling giant flames, strong winds and scorching temperatures. at least one home was destroyed. the entire community evacuated. >> we got told, you know, get ready to evacuate. and 15 minutes later, it was, go, you have no choice. >> reporter: the fire visible from palm springs 50 miles away. denise petty is worried knhirnd and the homes of others. >> i'm scared for the town, especially that they're not able to contain it, the town would be lost. >> reporter: a 32 year-year-old was assisted on charges he set the fire and several others. the ferguson fire continues to grow, now more than 41,000 achers and 26% contained. as the fire inches closer, visitors to the park have been forced to leave. thick smoke is everywhere. the fast-moving grass fire forced a closure of highway 99 south of sacramento wednesday.

hyde was discovered across the street from the safeway where he worked. his co-worker is under arrest. lilian kim is in santa clara tonight with the story. lilian? >> caller: >> reporter: dan, ray hyde and his accused killer worked at this safeway on homestead road, about a ten-minute walk from where hyde's body was found. 54-year-old ray hyde worked in the meat department at the santa clara safeway, across the street from central park where his body was found near the duck pond on friday. >> there was no obvious sign of trauma, no gunshot wound or knife sticking out of him, anything like that. but there were things at the scene that investigators were concerned about. >> reporter: the coroner confirmed their suspicions and on tuesday, his co-worker was arrested, 25-year-old gage mccartney. officials are working on details. he'll be arraigned on friday. until then, the single father of
