developing news, a home goes up in flames and neighbors are told to get out as a grass fire explodes near clayton. i'm dan ashley. >> a major road in contra costa county is still closed. >> traffic is stopped in both directions from marsh creek road from morgan territory road to gill drive. >> kate larson is live at a library that's been turned into a temporary shelter. we understand you got some new numbers. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. and there actually are a group of people at the shelter, which is the library, who have been evacuated. and others showing up wondering if they can get home, because there are roads starting to open up tonight. i did just get off the phone with cal fire. they tell me 247 acres have burned today. the good news, the fire is 20% contained and the forward progress of the fire has been stopped. however, there's still a hundred structures that are threatened. with the glow of fire twinkling

in the distance, fire engines on marsh creek road and clayton. anxious residents hoping to get home, lined up further up the two-lane road. >> if it were just an hour or two, that's one thing. but to have it be all night, it just seems really daunting and exhausting. >> the evacuation order is in place for a reason, because there are homes threatened, structures destroyed. >> reporter: sky 7 was overheadar air tankers dropped on vulnerable hillsides and homes. the fire broke out about 3:00 in the afternoon. wind fans the flames through more than 200 acres. >> it just collapsed. >> reporter: this woman said several outbuildings on her property burned and that she lost all of her chickens. >> at a certain point while your property's burning, you might us it is what it is. >> reporter: this man rode his mountain bike to the evacuation area to help his friends.

and all sorts of people drove into the area with horse trailers to evacuate animals. >> if i see a fire and there's a need, i own a horse trailer repair business, i take my trucks and trailers and we go help. >> there was that one home and three out buildings that were destroyed. cal fire tells me, as soon as the sun comes up, they'll get the air support back to fight back the flames even more tomorrow morning. cal firefighters will be spending the night. live in clayton, i'm kate larson, abc7 news. >> kate, thank you. abc7 news viewer matthew hodgen shared this clip with us. he was driving to walnut creek with his wife and 1-year-old child when the flames nearly overtook his car. >> we saw the flames bigger and bigger, and it was windy. i saw something i've never seen before, but it looked like a fire tornado that starts moving through, away from some of the fire trucks. >> and now let's check in with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya

for the weather conditions. >> the conditions are more favorable for the firefighters now, a 30-degree drop in temperature to 74 degrees right now. the humidity has come up considerably. 42%. and the winds right now, calm. this should help the firefighters overnight. but it's going to be a hot one tomorrow afternoon in the clayton area. heat advisory for the east bay hills and the diablo range, and lake and mendocino counties until tomorrow night. i'll be back to let you know how ho hot g a wyo g a breakrom the ho weather coming up. >> sandhya, thanks a lot. the weather a factor in this fire that wee'll talk about now. part of highway 101 is open now after a fire forced it to close in santa clara county. you can see where the fire broke out in san martin about 4:15 this afternoon. it burned roughly 20 acres.

sky 7 flew above the fire when flames gutted buildings and damaged vehicles. the good news, no one was hurt. the smoke forced the highway patrol to close southbound lanes for a time today. you can see all the black smoke. an investigator is working to find out what sparked this blaze. >> so many fires are burning across california tonight, hundreds of people have been forced to evacuate. cornell barnard spoke with an expert about why it seems like there's so many fires in the state right now. >> one fire expert says it's not your imagination, july has been a very busy time for fire and there's a reason for it. new fires from northern california to the mountains of southern california with little containment in sight. the cranston fire growing to 4,700 acres in east l.a. near idyllwild. 500 firefighters are battling giant flames, strong winds and scorching temperatures. at least one home was destroyed.

the entire community evacuated. >> we got told, you know, get ready to evacuate. and 15 minutes later, it was, go, you have no choice. >> reporter: the fire visible from palm springs 50 miles away. denise petty is worried knhirnd and the homes of others. >> i'm scared for the town, especially that they're not able to contain it, the town would be lost. >> reporter: a 32 year-year-old was assisted on charges he set the fire and several others. the ferguson fire continues to grow, now more than 41,000 achers and 26% contained. as the fire inches closer, visitors to the park have been forced to leave. thick smoke is everywhere. the fast-moving grass fire forced a closure of highway 99 south of sacramento wednesday. the fire jumped the highway and continued to burn at a nearby wrecking yard. we asked craig clemence from san jose state where it seems that so much of california is burning.

>> because of low precipitation, or the low rainfall we had last winter, that causes the fire season to move up a month. so while we're in july, our fuels are more like august, september. >> and the professor predicts the fire season could get worse. tonight, check it out, we are getting this new video into the newsroom. a fire prompting evacuations near redding in shasta county, just 10% contained. more than 1,000 firefighters are on the front lines. a broken-down car is the suspected cause. cornell barnard, abc7 news. santa clara police say a campbell man who was very well liked was found dead at a santa clara park and was murdered. the body of 54-year-old rainard hyde was discovered across the street from the safeway where he worked. his co-worker is under arrest. lilian kim is in santa clara tonight with the story.

lilian? >> caller: >> reporter: dan, ray hyde and his accused killer worked at this safeway on homestead road, about a ten-minute walk from where hyde's body was found. 54-year-old ray hyde worked in the meat department at the santa clara safeway, across the street from central park where his body was found near the duck pond on friday. >> there was no obvious sign of trauma, no gunshot wound or knife sticking out of him, anything like that. but there were things at the scene that investigators were concerned about. >> reporter: the coroner confirmed their suspicions and on tuesday, his co-worker was arrested, 25-year-old gage mccartney. officials are working on details. he'll be arraigned on friday. until then, the single father of three was an active member of cathedral of faith in san jose. >> who would want to hurt him? a very good man, so nice and sweet and very humble.

as you look at these pictures again, an explosion out the u.s. embassy in beijing. still waiting to hear what caused the explosion and whether anyone was injured. we'll keep you updated. new tonight, the reward has increased for information about a southern california homicide at a camp ground last month. the city of malibu is now offering $30,000 for information about tristan bodet's murder. he was shot in the head in the early morning hours last month while he and his two daughters slept in their tent. the family was planning to move to the bay area. erica wu, the volcaictim's wife says, tristan was a devoted husband and father whose life revolved around our family. i'm so grateful for every day i had with him. new developments in the intensifying search for a missing missing iowa college student with bay area ties. authorities believe she may have been kidnapped while out jogging. investigators are hoping her fit bit will provide clues.

gio benitez has more. >> reporter: tonight the fbi joining the intense search in a small iowa town to track down missing college student mollie tibbetts, investigating the possibility that she may have been abducted. >> for a 20-year-old to go missing and completely fall off the grid, it's obviously a very suspicious and very serious matter. >> reporter: volunteers already combed the area where she was last seen running a week ago today. agents now zeroing in on her digital footprint. authorities say fit bit is providing information in the case, in response to a search warrant. tibbetts' boyfriend dalton jack, said she always wore her fitness tracker. he said he began to worry when he realized she hadn't read his messages and hadn't shown up for work. >> she didn't call in, and i'm like, that's not like her. >> reporter: the sheriff saying jack is at work when his girlfriend disappeared, is not a suspect. her family tonight, holding on to hope. >> whatever situation she's in, it's not like she's going to sit there and give up.
