>> this is "abc 7 mo >> good morning, thursday, july 26th. thanks for joining us. >> ifst could be a day we will be talking about facebook and the implications of its after-market trading overnight. we will see what we're doing weather wise. mike, how are we looking? >> we have a big warming trend again for our inland areas where temperatures are in the 50s but could end up near 100. if you live near the coast or bay, see the sea breeze is out there once again going to keep you very comfortable compared to our inland neighbors. look at these cloud cover areas out there and they're getting thicker by the moment. watch out for a little fog also. a look at my accuweather 12-hour panner, mid 50s to 60 at 12:00, 60s, 70s, 80s by noon and the 90s taking over inland while the rest of us stay in the 60s and 70s. don't forget it's a spare the air day. >> it is. good day to carpool or use mass transit if possible. not too many on the roads this

morning. we have a problem in the north bay if you are taking lakeville highway between state route 37 into the north bay or out of the southbound side, a head-on collision this morning for a short time there we did have bothsides, northbound and southbound blocked. one lane is open. a slight delay through that are toll plaza looking okay as well. we have a little lineup in the cash lanes but that's about it. about 20 minutes until they turn the metering lights on. next traffic update around 5:10. as we mentioned a tough day for tech after facebook takes a fall. >> news of slower than expected growth sent afterhours trading into a tail spin. it's possible facebook could lose more money in stock market value than any other company in history. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in menlo park for us this morning. hi, matt. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. facebook went from a big thumb's up from investors to a big thumb's down overnight.

the stock taking a huge hit after its earnings report was released yesterday. how big was it? it was a bad night for them. the stock down 24% at one point in afterhours trading shedding about $144 billion in value. right now it's down about 19%, 20%. that also means ceo mark zuckerberg took a big personal hit losing $16.8 billion in stock value. that's about a fifth of his net worth. facebook's user base and revenue grew more slowly than expected in the second quarter as the menlo park based company dealt with privacy issues and expects revenue growth to slow down in the next couple quarters. this is the first full quarter following the cambridge analytica privacy scandal. they believe the shortfall had to do with european privacy rules that went into effect in may. the company still earned $5.1 billion in profit, that's up 31% from the year before. facebook also revealed instagram has more than a billion users.

reporting live here in menlo park, matt keller, abc 7 news. neil wilson's family got the first look at the man accused of stabbing her to death at oakland's macarthur bart station. dozens of family members packed a courtroom in oakland yesterday. the suspect, john cowell, did not enter a plea to first-degree murder charges and remains in custody this morning. his family says he's been in and out of jail for years without being treated for mental illness. his mother disagrees. >> i don't want to hear he was crazy and none of that. he ain't crazy, he playing crazy. >> it's a troubling case. >> cowell's next court hearing is set for next month. meanwhile, nia wilson's murder has sparked an on-line movement. sonoma hcial media using th her name launched by the african-american policy forum to call attention to violence and hate against black girls and black women. why say her name?

the thought is if you say the person's name their story and the demand for justice will not be forgotten. some posts linked nia wilson's death to white supremacy however investigators said there is no evidence right now pointing to a hate crime. the recent crimes on bart have sparked an on-line conversation about safety. we asked abc 7 news viewers to post comments and suggestions using #dearbart and received a lot of responses and here are a few. sue from san ramon says on facebook i'm afraid to ride your trains because of the people shooting up, sleeping with their belongings nearby, feces, urine and abandoned drug paraphernalia, all incidents bart wants passengers to report. one twitter user who goes by daily bart user says they took photos of homeless people sleeping on trains and reported one of the incidents via the bart app. the response, homelessness is not a crime. >> we have some times in the shift where it gets really busy and we have to prioritize our calls that come into our

dispatch center and we're going to take the crimes in progress and against people over somebody possibly eating a bag of chips on a train. >> bart says the simple solution it has right now is to get more officers. now on to deal news, fire crews hope to continue to gain ground on a 247-acre brush fire burning in clayton and contra costa county. overnight crews have been setting back fires trying to control this wildfire. it ignited just after 2:30 yesterday afternoon in the area of marsh creek road and morgan territory road. marsh creek is closed at gill drive, clayton road and morgan territory road. homes have been evacuated with 100 structures threatened by the have been destroyed. the fire now just 20% contained. cal fire records show that dozens of active fires are burning across california this morning. hundreds of people have been

forced to evacuate their homes. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke with an expert about why there are so many fires early in fire season. >> the cranston fire exploding in the mountains east of l.a. growing to 4700 acres in just a few hours, near the town of idle wilde. 500 firefighters battling giant flames, strong winds and scorching temperatures and one home was destroyed. the entire community evacuated. >> we've got told get ready to evacuate and 15 minutes later it was go. you have no choice. >> reporter: the fire visible from palm springs 50 miles away. denise petty is worried about her mountain cabin and the homes of others. >> i'm really scared for the town and especially if they're not able to contain it the town would be lost. >> reporter: a 32-year-old man arrested on charges he set the cranston fire and several others in riverside county. the ferguson fire continues to grow, now more than 41,000 acres

and 26% contained. as the fire inches closer, visitors to the park have been forced to leave. thick smoke is everywhere. a fast-moving grass fire forced a closure of highway 99 south of sacramento wednesday. the fire jumped the highway and continued to burn at a nearby wrecking yard. we asked craig clemens from san jose state why it seems so much of california is burning. >> because of our low precipitation or low rainfall year we had this last winter that causes the fire season to move up a month. while we're in july, our fuels are more like august/september. >> reporter: cornell bernard, abc 7 news. you are never more than seven minutes from my accuweather forecast. look at the air quality for the southern half of the central valley and it covers about 3.3 million people. it could be potentially breathing hazard air. we've got the same air quality warning until about 4:30 tomorrow afternoon. our spare the air is not for

network. they confronted him and pushed him out of the house. police arrested a 17-year-old suspect. >> so bizarre. >> what's your password? a group of house republicans has introduced articles of impeachment against deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. >> is overseeing robert mueller's investigation. the republicans claim he's hiding information from congress and ignoring congressional subpoenas. they say rosenstein was warned and it's time to find a new deputy attorney general. the department of justice has not commented. the white house says russian president vladimir putin's visit will be postponed until next year. the reason? special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian interference in the 2016 electionship. there's no deadline and he's offered no public timeline on where things stand. it's not clear if the russians have even accepted the

"gma" will have much more coming up at 7:00 a.m. here on abc 7. a form usa gymnastics doctor convicted of sex abuse wants a new judge and sentencing hearing. larry nassar says the judge was biased and unfairly sentenced him to a maximum 175 years in state prison. his attorneys filed an appeal yesterday. nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual misconduct. during his trial more than 150 women came forward.

in today's "gma" first look people on a north carolina beach joined forces to rescue several people caught in a rip current. >> abc news reporter kenneth gibson has a look. >> reporter: in the "gma" first look, watch this rescue as beachgoers link arms forming a chain to save swimmers from deadly rip currents. the fire department says there were several rescues in one day but one man was pronounced dead, a 41-year-old torn away by a rip current. the caution at beaches all summer long, do not ignore the red flag warnings. last year in panama city, 80 strangers banded together to form the human chain, nearly 100 yards into the gulf of mexico. saving the lives of ten strangers who were swept out to sea by the vicious rip currents. >> without them i wouldn't have my family. >> reporter: this year at least 24 people have been killed by rip currents, hundreds more rescued. coming up at 7:00 a.m. tips on how to survive a rip current if

you're caught in one. with your "gma" first season o. meanwhile, is it a good day to go to the beach today? >> it will be later on. the beach hazard statement for our rip currents until 9:00 this morning and then things will start to calm down. yeah, it would be great to get into the 50 degree water, wouldn't it? especially if your temperature is like 98 or 99. a look at san rafael where it's clear this morning as temperatures running about 56 degrees. the fog not nearly as prevalent across the north bay as it was yesterday. we're going to have mild to hot conditions today and go from clouds to sunshine except for at the coast where it will be cloudy the better part of the day. partly cloudy and patchy fog. it's going to be cool where most of us live. up in the hills, it's going to be another warm night. the extended really can't shake this summer warmth as temperatures will it continue to be where they should be. so that would be a little bit of a cooling trend.

yesterday afternoon on marsh creek road. it is now 20% contained. you can see there one home and three out buildings were destroyed by the flames. marsh creek road remains closed from morgan territory road to gill drive. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live with the latest, good morning. >> you still see some spot fires burning inside the perimeter. firefighters tell me there are still some active fires that they are dealing with here along marsh creek road. but firefighters tell me they have stopped the progression of this fire. they will be briefing us at 7:00 this morning. that's where we should find out more about what the night was like and what today looks likbo yesterday afternoon. one home in clayton was destroyed and three out buildings were burned. no ordered, residents describe the effort to get out and also to save all >> i live downtown and saw the smoke.

i grabbed an employee, put him in a truck, grabbed another truck, dropped the trailer off and flew up leon drive to see who needed to be evacuated. >> reporter: marsh creek road is still closed. morgan territory is now open. there's no power out here but a firefighter told me the argument was they wouldn't evacuate a neighborhood because of a power outage, so there was no reason to keep that evacuation order in place in that area. so again, morgan territory is open, marsh creek, though, still a hard closure. they did turn the library into an evacuation center overnight to give people a place to stay who had been evacuated. more coming for us at 7:00 this morning. live in clayton, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. on a related note this morning, firefighters also on alert from flare-ups that shut down highway 101 in santa clara county. you can see where the fire broke out in san martin late yesterday

afternoon. it's burned about 20 acres before fire crews had it surrounded. sky 7 flames damaged vehicles. thick okos10foedhp st wnhe southbound lanes for a while. no word on what started this fire. new mandatory evacuations are in effect this morning for the rapidly growing car fire in shasta county. the flames have scorched more than 6700 acres and the fire is only 10% contained. a chp officer took dramatic video near whiskey town where it appears an entire mountain is burning. >> i can feel the heat coming off this thing here. this is what the blaze is looking like. this whole mountain range. >> the fire started on monday and the cause is being attributed to the mechanical failure of a vehicle. this morning we are following breaking news out of arizona. a state trooper is dead after

being shot during a struggle with a man outside phoenix. officials say several officers were fighting with the man for several minutes last night while trying to take him into custody on interstate 10. authorities say one of the troopers lost their duty weapon in the struggle and the man involved is accused of firing two rounds. one trooper was hurt. the other trooper tyler edenof was killed. >> our thoughts and prayers are with his family. lives have been shattered and ruined. we're all in a little bit of a state of shock this morning. >> you can sense his shock. the trooper was an officer in training and had just graduated from the state trooper academy in may. an explosion caused a brief panic outside the u.s. embassy in beijing. >> it caused a chaotic scene on the stres building. witnesses reported a small cloud of smoke rising and officers

surrounding the embassy. chinese police say the explosion was caused by a man carrying a small bomb trying to hurt himself. a santa clara safeway worker is accused of killing his co-worker. ray hyde's body was found at a park friday across the street from the store. the 54-year-old worked in the meat department being described as an active member of the cathedral of faith church in san jose. we're told he was a single father of three. >> who would want to hurt him? he was a very good man to everybody. he was so nice and sweet and humble. >> the suspect identified as 25-year-old gauge mccartney is due in court tomorrow. police are piecing together the case and investigators are going to release more details after mccartney is arraigned. this is santa clara's first homicide of the year. the family of a man convicted of a rape and m it wa the goldeniller wh committeanon was

killed in 1979. there are similarities between her case and the m.o. of the golden state killer. >> her ankles were tightly tied with a cord from the window blinds. she was bludgeoned over 20 times with a hammer. >> police arrested william lee evans for this crime and took he took a plea deal in the case. he died of a heart attack in prison in the year 2013. the orange county d.a.'s office has agreed to look for dna evidence that might link the golden state killer suspect to this crime. the process, though, could take several months. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. cloud cover in the same neighborhoods but not as much fog as yesterday as you get closer to the coast you may run into pockets of mist in the air.

it's going to be a little warm by the time we get to noon and 83. when starting off like in the low 50s this morning hanging out in the low to mid 90s this afternoon and cool back to 74 by 8:00. i've been paying attention this morning and you said it's been pretty quiet so far, but things are changing. >> we do have a couple new issues to talk about now. want to head to the emeryville area. we have this one on camera. you can see a vehicle facing sideways on westbound 80 a box truck and reports into chp this vehicle lost control, a solo vehicle crash and hit one of the side barriers and there you go. it is a little tough to see a truck facing sideways. emergency crews not on the scene yet. we have about two and a half lanes down on westbound 80 and this is right at the state route 13 overpass around ashby. we'll keep a close eye on that. that means a lot of folks trying to get to the bay bridge toll plaza aren't able to get there and we don't have any metering lights. maybe a little bit of bay.
