as we take a look outside from our walnut creek camera it's a great start to the morning. don't be fooled, a lot of bay area facing another heat advisory today as summer ste.it'soi this p much of the thursday, july 26th. 6:00 a.m. and you are never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. >> thank you very much, guys. let's start off by taking a look at the wind pattern. that has everything to do with how hot or not you're going to get today. you can see the winds coming ashore and heading into the south bay. we're seeing clouds spread throughout this area. calm the north bay. not as much fog as yesterday. a look at the gray that signifies the cloud cover that is out there. we're going to have a summer spread once again in my accuweather 12-hour planner. temperatures comfortable, mid 50s to low 60s. we'll stay in the 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay. look from noon to 4:00, 86 to 94 inland and still in the 70s and 80s at 7:00. it is a spare the air day.

this morning.ostbo $144 billion in afterhours trading and ceo mark zuckerberg lost close to $17 billion in value. all of this came after the earnings report was announced yesterday afternoon for facebook. facebook's user base and revenue grew more slowly than expected in the second quarter as the menlo park based company dealt with privacy issues. an executive warned it expects revenue growth to slow down in the next couple quarters. this was following the cambridge analytica scandal. they believe the shortfall had more to do with privacy rules that went into effect in may. for facebook, the company still earned $5.1 billion in profit, that's up 31% from the year before. facebook also revealed instagram has more than a billion users. reporting live in menlo park,

matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. developing news, fire crews hope to continue to gain ground on a 247-acre brush fire burning in clayton and contra costa county. overnight crews have been setting backfires trying to control the wildfire. it started just after 2:30 yesterday afternoon in the area of marsh creek road and morgan territory road. this morning, marsh creek road is closed at gill drive, clayton road and morgan territory road. flames have destroyed one home and three out buildings. 100 structures still being threatened and some families are evacuated this morning. the fire is 20% contained. there are dozens of fires burning across california this morning. >> they stretch from the oregon boarder to southern california. the cranston fire is exploding in the mountains east of l.a. near idyllwild. it's grown to 4700 acres in just a few hours. evuatest one home was desoyed.mi one person i ghe

fire. and the massive fire continues to grow near yosemite. now more than 41,000 acres and only 26% contained. visitors have been forced to leave yosemite valley because of the intense smoke. south of sacramento, highway 99 shut down yesterday because of a fire. the flames jumped the highway burning into a wrecking yard. outside redding, new video shows the car fire expanding overnight moving closer to populated areas. the fire exploded in size yesterday to more than 6700 acres and containment went down to 10%. we asked fire weather experts craig clemens from san jose state why so much of california is burning. >> because of our low precipitation or low rainfall year, we had slash winter that causes the fire season to move up a month. our fuels fuels fue are more like august/september.

the fire season could get worse as the summer goes on. nia wilson's family got their first look at the man accused of stabbing her to death at oakland's macarthur bart station. dozens of family members packed a courtroom yesterday. john cowell did not enter a plea to first-degree murder charges and remains in custody. his family says he's been in and out of jail for years without being treated for mental illness. wilson's mother disagrees. >> i don't want to hear he was crazy he ain't crazy, he playing crazy. >> nia wilson's murder has sparked an online movement. social media using the #say her name launched by the african-american policy forum to call attention to violence and hate against black girls and black women. it's used because the thought is if you say the person's name their story and the demand for justice will not be forgotten.

some posts linked nia wilson's death to white supremacy however investigators have said there is right now no evidence pointing to a hate crime. the recent crimes on bart have sparked an on-line conversation about safety. we asked abc 7 news viewers to post comments and suggestions using #dearbart and received a bit of responses from you and here are a few of them. sue from san ramon says on facebook i'm afraid to ride your trains because of the people shooting up, sleeping with their belongings nearby, feces, urine and abandoned drug paraphernalia. those are all incidents bart wants passengers to report. one twitter user did that and goes by daily bart user. she says she took photos of homeless people sleeping on trains and reported one of the incidents via the bart app. the response she says from bart, homelessness is not a crime. >> we have our peak hours, some times in the shift where it gets really busy and we have to prioritize our calls that come into our dispatch center and we're going

in the house to pass an impeachment resolution. new developments in the intensifying search for a missing iowa college student with bay area ties. investigators are now hoping her fitbit may provide clues. as we told you yesterday the fbi has joined the search in brooklyn, iowa, to track down missing college student mollie tibbetts. authorities believe she may have been kidnapped jogging more than a week ago when she disappeared. abc news contributor and former special agent brad garret talked to paula ferris on "gma" about what kind of information authorities could find through her tech accounts. >> it could be enormous as far as who did she have contact with the last, where can they locate the person she was talking to, if in fact anything happened to her while she was running, and that remains to be seen at this pit, the fitbit in conjunction with her cell phone may give them a location. >> the sheriff says tibbett's boyfriend is cooperating.

he was at work when his girlfriend disappeared and is not a suspect. "gma" will have much more coming up at 7:00 a.m. here on abc 7. medicinal cannabis at the center of a dispute between a santa rosa family and a school district. 5-year-old brook adams has has a rare condition that causes her to have seizures. her family has resorted to using cannabis oil to treat her and says the results have cut down on hospital visits. since drugs like marijuana are not allowed on campus, the union school district is proposing that brook be home schooled. her family is challenging the district and its policy. >> there needs to be a bill, an amendment to the bill, to allow all kids to access their medical marijuana that's legal in california. >> we want to educate every child in our community. this is a lovely little girl. we have two laws and we're stuck in the middle. >> a judge held a hearing yesterday and is expected to rule on the family's challenge to the district policy next month.

new this morning, imagine being woken up in the middle of the night by a burglar asking you to use your wi-fi. it's a bizarre story but palo alto police say it happened to a couple living on east charleston road near middlefield road. the couple called for help early sunday morning. they told officers that a masked burglar broke into their home and then asked to use their wi-fi network and they confronted him and pushed him out of their house. police arrested the 17-year-old suspect about a block away. new video this morning showing a dust devil stirring up hay as it sweeps across a field in the netherlands. the country is in the middle of a drought right now going through its driest july since the year 1976. a dust devil is a vortex that's sometimes compared to a tornado, not quite as violent. cool to see. that dust devil is fine. talk about this kid again. he breaks into someone's house,

to clouds. patchy clouds and warm hills tomorrow morning and the heat will ease a little bit as we head towards the weekend. still have the same players on the map. high to our east, low to our west, pumping up the warmth from the desert southwest and see it hits the peripheries more than anywhere with los gatos and morgan hill in the upper 90s. low to mid 80s for south bay, a sunny 75 in santa cruz. really comfortable around millbrae 72 and then san mateo 75 and the rest of the peninsula low 80s. 61 to 63 along the coast nearly 68 in downtown san francisco. 87 in sonoma, vallejo 85, the farther north 90s in santa rosa and 100s around clear lake and ukiah. mid to upper 70s for the east bay shore. and then we have the mid to upper 90s in our inland east bay neighborhoods. mid 50s to mid 60s cloud cover about the same as this morning. my accuweather seven-day forecast, a slow easing of the heat. hardly noticeable until sunday when temperatures are almost six

this is the cranston fire we were telling you about a few minutes ago burning east of l.a. this is near the town of idyllwild. 4700 acres and at last count it was only about 5% contained and this is the fire where they arrested a man yesterday because they say he is -- he set it and set other fires in the area as well. we'll keep our eye on this throughout the morning. gaps causing a headache for commuters in san francisco. according to the examiner nearly 100 busses are sitting idle because of an operator shortage. with fewer busses on the streets riders are left waiting more than 45 minutes on some of the busiest routes. sfmta say it's a perfect storm of construction, training delays and union requirements. you can expect to see relief next month when muni resumes through the twin peaks tunnel. a target retirement age in mind, may want to add a couple years. a study from an organization called the index annuity leadership council found three in five americans are very likely to be working longer than planned. they should expect to push their retirement back by about two fi during rirthe counci sayst'sevoa nt planning for nex at se

helicopters will resume flame retardant and water drops on a brush fire in clayton. >> cal fire says the fire grew to 247 acres after igniting yesterday afternoon on marsh creek road. it is now 20% contained. you can see here a home that burned. >> and marsh creek road remains closed from morgan territory road to gill drive. >> reporter amy hollyfield live with new details and video that came in overnight. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. look at isom behowe close fire came to this house. we are on marsh creek road. firefighters did save that house. look how smoky it still is here and that's because little spot fires are still burning. firefighters tell me this -- these fires are all happening inside the perimeter. they are dealing with them. but they did tell me that they did stop the forward progression of this fire. so they are feeling better about the situation here. there will be a briefing at 7:00

this morning. that's where we will find out officially how the night went and what today looks like. this fire started at 2:40 yesterday afternoon. one home was destroyed along with three out buildings. evacuations were ordered and residents tell us about how stressful that has been for them. >> mostly just worried for the animals and just making sure everything is safe. i mean definitely been through this before, but the fact that we can't get in to get them is kind ofune. >> reporter: marsh creek road is still closed this morning. morgan territory is now open. but there is no power so beware, the firefighters told me the argument was they wouldn't evacuate a neighborhood for a power outage so there was no reason to keep the evacuation order in place. so morgan territory is now open. the library did turn into a shelter overnight for people who needed a place to stay. the good news on this fire no injuries have been reported.

we are expecting a briefing in a few minutes at 7:00. live in clayton, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. and firefighters are alert for flairups from a fire that shut down a stretch of highway 101 in santa clara county. they're watching things closely this morning. you can see here on our map, this is where the fire broke out in san martin afternoon. it burned about 20 acres before fire crews had it surrendered. sky 7 flew over the area as flames damaged vehicles as well. thick smoke from the flames blew across 101. at one point chp shut down the southbound lanes for a while. no word on what started this fire. they're watching for flareups this morning. want to take you to shasta county. new mandatory evacuations are in effect for the rapidly growing car fire. the flames have scorched more than 6700 acres and the fire is 10% contained. a chp officer took some pretty dramatic

video near whiskey town where it appears an entire mountain is on fire. >> i can feel the heat coming off this thing here. this is what the blaze is looking like. this whole mountain range. >> the fire started on monday and the cause is being attributed to the mechanical failure of a vehicle. we're tracking breaking news in arizona. a state trooper is dead after being shot during a struggle with a man. it happened outside phoenix. officials say several officers began fighting with the man last night, trying to take him into custody on the interstate 10. authorities say one of the troopers lost their duty weapon in the struggle. investigators say the man fired two rounds with the weapon. one trooper was hurt. the trooper that died his name is trooper tyler edenhofer. he was the trooper killed in this. >> our thoughts and prayers are with his family. lives have been shattered and ruined.

and we're all in a little bit of a state of shock this morning. trooper edenhofer was an officer in training and had just graduated from the state trooper academy in may. new this morning, the explosion outside the u.s. embassy in beijing, china. >> some scary moments there. a chaotic scene surrounding the building. witnesses reported seeing a small cloud of smoke rising and officers surrounding the embassy. chinese police say the explosion was caused by a man carrying a small bomb trying to hurt himself and he survived and appears no one else was injured. a santa clara safeway worker is accused of killing his co-worker. ray hyde's body was found at a park friday across the street from the store. the 54-year-old worked in the meat department and is being described as an active member of the cathedral of faith church in san jose. we're told he was a single father of three. >> who would want to hurt him? he was a very good man to

everybody. he was so nice and sweet and very humble. >> the suspect identified as 25-year-old gage mccartney is due in court tomorrow. police say that they are still piecing together the case and investigators will release more details after mccartney is arraigned. this is santa clara's first homicide of the year. the family of a man convicted of a rape and murder is now fighting to prove it was the golden state killer who committed the crime. 28-year-old joan anderson was killed in 1979. there are similarities between her case and the m.o. of the golden state killer. >> her ankles were tightly tied with a cord from the window blinds. she was bludgeoned over 20 times with a hammer. >> police arrested william lee evans for this crime and took he took a plea deal in the case. he died of a heart attack in prison in the year 2013. the orange county d.a.'s office has agreed to look for dna

evidence that might link the case to the golden state killer. the suspect joseph james deangelo. he may be connected to the crime but the process could take several months. happening today the trump administration says it is on track to meet the court-imposed deadline to reunite all the migrant children separated from their parents at the border. there are about 2500 kids covered under the ruling but there could be some bumpy roads ahead. some of the parents have been deported without their kids and hundreds more who can be reunited by immigration customs enforcement. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. near the coast like the golden gate bridge, west wind gusting to 20 miles per hour and mist hang in the air that will continue throughout the morning commute. ferry ride is gusty north of the bay bridge through the delta this afternoon and evening.

mass transit a huge summer spread once again. nearly 40 degrees from san francisco to our inland neighborhoods. 65 in the east bay valleys and 75 at 10:00, 86 in noon. that's comfortable compared to the mid 90s for most of the afternoon. and then 82 still at 8:00. peninsula much calmer conditions, 61 at 8:00. sunshine by noon and mid to upper 70s throughout the afternoon hours. comfortable 68 with sunshine at 8:00. and the south bay it's going to be warmer after starting off with clouds this morning, 63. 20 degrees warmer with sunshine by noon and hanging out in the upper 80s throughout the afternoon hours and also you're going to cool nicely to about 76 degrees by 8:00.okeheeat is goi linger longer in my accuweather seven-day forecast. you have an update on a problem out there. >> i want to take you back to emeryville. i am fortunate to have this on camera so i can keep track of this closely. they did pull the truck that lost control and took out a few

barrels this morning in the emeryville stretch, they dragged it off to the side. they have moved the vehicle involved in the crash. no injuries. that was it. nobody else involved. now they've got to clean up this mess and calling for a street sweeper. a little hard to tell if that is actually it. they may be making those cleanup efforts as we speak. some sand from the barrels went all over the roadway. we've got the three right lanes still blocked and you're looking at about an hour drive westbound 80 between highway 4 and the maze. we have a new crash westbound 24 inside caldecott tunnel and that is blocking the left lane in bore number three. use bore number four and definitely plan on some delays into the arenda area. it is no secret that bay area can have some nightmare xhutsz like the one i was talking about. a study says ride share services are only making things worse. the report by bruce shaler says options like uber pool and lyft line appeal to people who might normally choose mass transportation or another way to get to where they're going

facebook stock want to hear, matt. >> yeah. a lot of money overnight in the stock market. facebook used to be a big thumb's up with investors, but this morning it's a big thumb's down. the stock plunging after the earnings report came out yesterday. so how bad was it? well, it was really bad for a lot of people. the stock was down 24% at one point in afterhours trading shedding about $144 billion in value. that's rebounded a little bit. that means ceo mark zuckerberg took a big personal hit losing $16.8 billion in stock value at that time. that's about a fifth of his net worth. facebook's user base and revenue grew more slowly than expected in the second quarter as the menlo park based company dealt with privacy issues and an executive expects revenue growth to slow down in the next couple quarters. good news for facebook, the company still earned $5.1 billion in profit, up 31% from the year before. facebook also revealed instagram has more than a billion users.
