in beijing. >> around 1:00 p.m. today in china it happened. dozens lined up outside. the smoke there. only the suspect injured, he is now in custody and matt gutman is in hong kong with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning, george. the u.s. embassy has confirmed it was a bomb. it exploded right outside the embassy gates sending jitters through a very sensitive part of beijing that is filled with embassies. now, also it happened right during the lunch hour rush. there were dozens of people waiting to get visas. in this video you can see that smoke hanging in that intersection still and just how many people were about. now, remarkably, dozens of those people got right back in line to get their visas. now, u.s. officials say nobody was hurt except for that bomber himself as you mentioned and it didn't cause any damage to the embassy which is relatively new and heavily fortified. at this point chinese officials say they have detained this 26-year-old suspected bomber. they say he is in a hospital getting treatment for one of his hands that was injured. so far, george, no word on motive.

>> yeah, a lot more to learn about what drove this. matt, thanks very much. cecilia? let's turn to dangerous wildfires out west. record heat and dry conditions are fueling the flames, and now a new one in southern california, the cranston fire burning through thousands of acres destroying at least five homes and threatening hundreds more. abc's will carr is on the ground in mountain center, california, and, will, they have now arrested a suspect accused of starting it. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. good morning. all of this devastation could have been avoided. this truck is charred. the fire burning so hot, it melted the aluminum off the wheels, and then check out what is left of this hose. you can imagine the homeowner racing around this property trying to spray everything down with water as those flames came towards the home but it just happened too quickly. the home burned to the ground. this morning it's smoldering and residents are furious. overnight, authorities arresting a suspected arsonist after the fast-moving cranston fire exploded wednesday. fierce flames destroying at

cecilia? >> okay, will, thank you. paula. thanks, cecilia. it is a much different scene on the east coast with unrelenting rain and severe flooding. we want you to take a look at these images from hershey park in pennsylvania and for the third day this week the famed amusement park is shut down because of that flooding. abc's rob marciano is in the area and, rob, it's so very re to see the park close for this period of time. >> it is, paula. the last time it was closed was 2011 when these water levels rose to record heights. this flood is challenging most levels. the second highest level on record. you can see that building behind me clearly is submerged in this river and now in the middle of the water all that debris, some of it at least, is part of a dumpster that floated in the river, and got pinned across a bridge that you can barely see because it is submerged in the water. this is technically a creek but today it is a raging river after five straight days of relentless rain. overnight, blinding rain blasting kansas.

trees down, power lines, from friday afternoon and evening from albany through philadelphia to washington, d.c., cecilia. >> a rough summer. ginger, thanks. let's go to the white house where president trump tempered fears of a trade war by announcing a new agreement with the european union at a surprise press conference in the rose garden. abc's terry moran was there, and sticking with that, the agreement with europe more cease-fire than peace treaty. >> reporter: that's for sure. cease-fire is right and both sides blinked in that hastily arranged rose garden event. president trump and eu head jean-claude juncker agreed to step back from the brink of this looming trade war between the united states and europe to the delight of republicans in congress and wall street investors. it was just last week that the president was talking about the eu as a foe of the u.s. and he's been declaring on twitter things like, tariffs are great, no weakness, but he has also been coming under tremendous pressure from american farmers, getting clobbered by retaliatory tariffs from china in that trade war, so in practical terms, this agreement was merely an agreement not to escalate, to
7:09 am
work toward zero tariffs on non-auto industrial goods which was something that the eu was negotiating with the obama administration as well. for now, no trade war with europe. >> we'll see how those negotiations go. meanwhile, on capitol hill, they're about to go on vacation for five weeks. on their way out house republicans have made a significant move against the head of the russia investigation. >> reporter: that's right. 11 house republicans have filed articles of impeachment against deputy attorney general rod rosenstein. this is a rare and almost certainly futile move. republicans have been furious with rosenstein that he has not shared more inside information from some of the most sensitive investigations especially the russia investigation. the democrats are warning this is an attack on the mueller probe. the last time the house went forward and actually impeached someone who wasn't a president or a federal judge was back in 1876. so rod rosenstein can probably sleep easy tonight. >> let's go back to the rose garden event quickly. the white house is under fire for banning one of our colleagues from cnn from that event because they didn't like

the question she asked earlier in the day. >> reporter: that's right, kaitlan collins who has been representing the pool yesterday, that's the group of television networks. we select one every day to go in and represent us all at the event with jean-claude juncker hollered a few questions about that michael cohen tape, but the president and his staff apparently perturbed. she was told by press secretary sarah sanders and new white house communications director bill shine she would not be allowed into the rose garden. that is a very rare move to select someone because you don't like what they're saying and ban them. i must say there's been unanimous objection from across the press. the white house correspondents' association and the president's favorite network, fox news, its president and anchors like bret baier have called for the right of full access for free and unfettered press. this is an act of peak by the white house that's been objected
7:11 am
to right across the board by the press. >> this has banded the press corps together because this is unprecedented as you know. this reporter did nothing wrong. this was her job. this is our job to represent all of the journalists at the white house when we go into these pool sprays. these questions were about the news of day. >> pretty straight forward. >> michael cohen, and this is not what you do in a country that values the first amendment. >> pretty surprising and escalation in the attacks on the press. i want to bring in our chief global affairs correspondent, martha raddatz on that, and this comes a couple days after you wrote a powerful piece in "the washington post" after the president went to the veterans of foreign wars convention, kind of goaded the crowd with attacks on the press. >> reporter: he sure did, george. he is relentless and he does not care who the crowd is. those veterans take an oath to support and defend the constitution, so it was very disturbing to watch some of the veterans boo the press when the president told them not to believe the press. reporters have been at the side of the military in war with many of them injured or killed. this can have a profound effect on how some americans view the media no matter whether they cover politics or war, george. >> you know that from being

embedded with the troops. on capitol hill yesterday secretary of state mike pompeo went up to capitol hill to testify before the senate foreign relations committee for the first time since that helsinki summit and got quite a grilling. >> has the president told you what he and president putin discussed in their two-hour closed door meeting in helsinki? >> the president has a prerogative to choose who is in meetings and who is not. i'm confident you've had private one-on-one meetings in your life as well. >> did he tell you whether or not -- what happened in those two hours? >> yes, i had a number of conversations with president trump about what transpired in the meeting. >> did he tell putin that i'll release or ultimately relaxed sanctions? >> senator, what you need to conduct your role, your appropriate role, i will provide you today. you asked me about u.s. policy with respect to sanctions, and i can confirm to you that no commitment has been made to change those policies in any way. >> reporter: secretary pompeo defended the president again and again, but i think many left still very unclear and confused

about what happened in that meeting and what was agreed upon. the russians say there were concrete agreements as you know, george. >> he kept trying to draw a >> he kept trying to draw a line but connect the president's policies which -- the president's words sometimes at odds with the president's positives. what we did learn that proposed summit with vladimir putin put off for awhile. >> reporter: you know, it was in a tweet that the meeting would be this folly would come to the white house, but took nearly everyone by surprise including the director of national intelligence, dan coats, and after that helsinki meeting trump faced a slew of criticism including at that hearing yesterday where the republican chairman, bob corker, said trump looked submissive and deferential to putin and now the white house apparently thinking a second meeting so soon after helsinki is not such a good idea, george. >> next year at the earliest. martha raddatz, thanks very much. paula. >> extraordinary time, george. now to staggering news from facebook which suffered its largest stock decline ever.

brad, welcome and thanks for joining us. the fbi gets involved but there are thousands of missing cases. why did they choose this one? >> well, when either a child of tender age or adult goes missing after a period of time and it doesn't appear they've harmed themselves, there is a presumption of foul play, and there is also a presumption that they have crossed possibly state lines which gives the fbi jurisdiction. >> so investigators are looking at her social media, her electronic devices. she was a creature of habit, she was well connected on social media. what kind of information can they cull, especially from the data from her fitbit as well? >> it could be enormous as far as who did she have contact the last, where can they geolocate the person she was talking to, if, in fact, anything happened to her while she was running and that remains to be seen at this point, the fitbit in conjunction with her cell phone may give her a location. >> it could be crucial. she's been missing for a week.
7:44 am
she was staying at her boyfriend's house where she was dog sitting and then disappeared after she goes for this jog. what do you think investigators should do now that she has been missing for such a long time? >> so, the real key you have a small community. have you eliminated the 1,500 plus people that live there? then you have to eliminate people she's working with at the summer camp and look at the university of iowa because that's where she was spending the first year of college. and so it's -- could it be a stranger abduction? it could but the likelihood it's somebody she knows. >> we are holding out hope she is okay. brad, thank you so much for joining us. george? >> thank you, paula. coming up have you called cvs lately? what do you think that have hold music? there's a petition now to change it. woman 1: proof of less joint pain... woman 2: ...and clearer skin. woman 3: this is my body of proof. man 2: proof that i can fight psoriatic arthritis... woman 4: ...with humira. woman 5: humira targets and blocks a specific source of inflammation that contributes to both joint and skin symptoms.
