all over the state fire burns. this morning the one that's closest to us in clayton still poses a threat, but there's some good news for those in its path. i'm reggie okeith. kristen zi is going to be in later. this morning firefighters are encouraged by their progress. it's 60% contained and the area of concern is on the screen there. marsh creek road and bragden way east of mount diablo.

>> reporter: hi, reggie.rgcy i pla.look behind me and you can why. there's still smoke coming out of this burned area. little embers here and there. so fire officials still want to guard the homes here. you can see there were several close calls out here. look at this home. they saved it but it lost the tire of the tractor out front. that's how close it got. residents telling us they were so grateful for everything firefighters were able to save. >> they were water dropping all around it but it was moving way too fast. >> reporter: a fast moving grass fire outside of clayton that destroyed one home, a home of his neighbors and friends who live on the hill above him. >> the fire sweat over so fast, and there were firefighters all around it and they had to get

out of the it was too much too fast. >> reporter: andie's home is okay. you can see the pink retardant that saved his home and others. if it dries it's tough to remove. >> i don't know how they got so close. they did an amazing job. >> reporter: firefighters say they got a break overnight and were able to stop the forward progress over the fire. >> firefighters made really good progress overnight with the lower temperatures and higher humidities. >> reporter: it happened in a rural area 6 miles from the town center where stores are still open this morning, coffee shops are still busy and residents are still greeting each other. >> the smoke is blowing the opposite way, so it's like nothing is happening except for the fire trucksasght. mshek roas

still closed and you can see at&t out here working on their damaged cables. they did not give us a time when that can come, but they are making it a priority. they know people are anxious to get back home. no injuries reported from this fire. >> promising news there, amy, thank you. now near yosemite not the same story. this is more than 43,000 acres burning and the fire is only 27% contained. visitors have been forced to leave yosemite valley because of intense smoke. evacuated areas are expected too be open saturday. the fire exploded in size this morning to 20,000 acres.

containment there is only up 10%. new mandatory evacuations are in effect right now. we asked craig from san diego state. >> because of our low precipitation and rainfall year we had last winter that causes the fire season to move up a month. while we're in july our fuels are more like august, september. >> predicts california's fire season could get even worse as the fire season goes on. the cause is being attributed to the mechanical failure of a vehicle. with these fires burning a lot of us are asking is the weather going to cooperate for fires? last night was pretty good except for the clayton fire. >> our care is not moving much. there's not much breeze across the state, but on the other hand that's what's causing all this heat to build up once again through at least tomorrow. look at the triple digits

through the central valley, even up towards yosemite and palm springs, 100. you can see the gray that was pushing into the central valley. that's all the smoke from that fire. we do have the chaps of thunderstorms again today, but just like yesterday they're not going to help the firefighters whatsoever. they'll blow up over the mountains and head off to the east. we have air quality issues all the way up until possibly 4:30 tomorrow. i imagine these are likely going to get extended, reggie, because they're not going to get that fire under control anytime soon. new at 11:00, excessive flaring is under way at an east bay refinery. according to the richmond fire department sulfur dioxide is being released. no shelter in place has been issued. chevron says there's an issue

with a processing at the refinery. the company says flaring is a norm part of refinery operations. not a lot to like this morning for facebook investsers. the stock is down 20% right now after the company's latest earnings report really spooked investors and that sparked a massive sell-off that started last nights. matt? >> reporter: you think you had a bad day, at one point today mark zuckerberg lost close to $17 billion on paper. today is likely going to be the worst day in the history of facebook stock. the opening bell on wall street was like a starting gun for the bill sell-off for facebook. the social media companied plunged nearly 19porous in early trading wiping out more than a billion dollars in market value. this was for the first full quarter following the cambridge

struggle. >> reporter: there were still some positives for facebook. it earned more than in profit. nia wilson's family got the first look at the man accused of stabbing her to death. the suspect, john cowell did not enter a plea to first degree murder charges. he remains in custody. investigating whether or not the stabbing is a hate crime. cowell is going to be formally arraigned next month. police have not released a motive to the unprovoked attac c against mia and her sister. here's what she posted on instagram speaking directly to white people. she telds them all black people fear for their lives in america and have done so for

we have is breaking news right now. there have been reports of an active shooter at the palo alto va facility. palo alto police just tweeted there is no active shooter. va officials just told us they had a report of a shooter at 10:30 this morning and the whole campus was put on a shelter in place. the all clear was given about ten minutes later. and take a look ace this accident that's causing heavy traffic right now on southbound 101 above fourth street. that is in fact a truck dangling off of the overpass. san rafael fire posted these

i thought we'd start off with a time lapse of what happened this morning, the reason why today's going be a little bit different than yesterday. the marine layer a bit thicker, a bit easier to heads over our neighborhoods and bring some cooling. you can see it made a gorgeous sunrise this morning. let's see how the sea breeze is affecting temperatures. we're still stuck in the 50s. barely in the 60s in oakland. and you can see only 71 in san jose. head out to brend wotwood, no s breeze for you.

look at santa rosa, napa. 69 and 65. you still see some clouds lingering around as we look for emeriville. slightly milder today with sunshine away from the coast. foggy spots, temperatures and about the same as this morning for tomorrow morning and that summer spread, we're going to keep it throughout the extended forecast. you can see the spread in the south bay. mid to upper 90. not quite as hot in the south bay. the heart of it low to mid-al 0s. 84 in san jose. low to mid-700s for san maybe 60 to 63 along the coast today. 63 in downtown san francisco. 70 in sauce leto. mid to upper 80s for the closer you are to the bay. the farther north you go you hit those 100 degree temperatures there.

look at the 70, oakland 71. some of the most refreshing temperatures around the east bay shore. now, some of that cooler air is leaking through right up into san ramon, 09. but you can see we're pushing the mid to upper 90s from pittsburgh all the way out to brentwood and discovery bay. mind your manners because there's appreciation night. here's a look at san jose. spare the air all the way up to midnight, and this is for burning fossil fuels. so if you can, try not to do it. temperatures falling from the 90s to 70s during the evening hours. and we still have that spare the air for mainly the east bay and santa clara valley. that's where we expect the poorest air quality to develop. but the spare the air does
