california right now. residents are being told to flee the flames. one person has died. >> the several new developments to tell you about. cal fire is reporting that a private hired dozer operator was killed. they haven't released further details but they're about to hold a briefing. >> the fire is erratic and tough to predict. at least 15 structures have been destroyed. the fire has burned more than 28,000 acres and is just 6% contains. the abc affiliate in redding was on the air but had to abruptly stop their broadcast and evacuate wait. >> we're being evacuated. that's why we are kind of closing out right now. we are going to leave the station because it is now unsafe to be here. like i said, we have all the information on our website and we'll be updating you from there just as much as we can. >> we're going to go out on the mercy sky cam for you.

south san francisco fire chief says california's mutual aid system, a vital safety net in times like these. >> everybody is willing to participate with the idea that at any point in time it could happen here in our city. >> reporter: firefighters from santa rosa and marin will join crews in shasta county. this striking image in riverside county. 22 firefighters and five engines from the san francisco fire department are also there. >> i'm not necessarily surprised that we're doing it. it's unfortunate that we're at a point where we have so many of these devastating wildfires that we do have to do it. >> reporter: the department retweeting this bit of gratitude. god bless you firefighters from the north. >> that really shows solidarity throughout the entire state of california. it's very much appreciated. >> reporter: it's unclear when fire crews will return home.

fire departments want the public to know even though fire crews are on the fire lines, staffing levels here in the bay area remain at a safe, normal level. governor brown has declared states of emergency in several counties including mare poe ini. no flames right now in yosemite but the fire has resulted in the closure of the park's valley floor. the marsh fire in clayton is now 75% contained. it's burned about 250 acres since starting yesterday afternoon. cal fire says one home burned and 13 structures are still threatened. there is a mandatory evacuation for marsh creek road between morgan territory road and gill drive. temperatures around the state are certainly not helping firefighters tonight.

off a woman who tried to kidnap her grandchild in broad daylight. >> reporter: that attempted abduction happened right here at fairmont park less than a mile from graham middle school. parents say they're going to be hugging their children much tighter tonight. police say it was here along mountain view's fairmont avenue that a toddler, mom and grandmother were approached by a woman wearing a white mask over her mouth wednesday. her bizarre actions were followed by a brazen demand. >> she drove up, stops, came over and said i am here to take your child. >> reporter: police say the suspect is a transient out of mon monterey county. grandma took action and in the

scuffle grandma suffered injuries to her head. goem gomez turned to the toddler's mom making threats. gomez didn't get far. a patrol officer found her early thursday morning turning into this shell station just 2 1/2 miles from fairmont park. in gomez's car, police found drug paraphernalia and the white mask victims described at the time of the attack. police say it was similar to the one seen here. she was arrested for attempted kidnapping, criminal threats, battery and possession of drug paraphernalia. >> i'm very shocked, especially for this road. that's probably the first time i've ever heard of our street having any problems whatsoever. >> reporter: neighbors say what happened wednesday isn't common for the area. >> we are here for four years and we feel safe. >> reporter: much safer now that

gomez is behind bars. mountain view police say they are still working on answering some serious questions. those include what was gomez doing here, why was she attempting to abduct this toddler and is there a much bigger and more serious situation that the police department needs to be aware of here in their city? we know that gomez again is behind bars and is expected in court on monday. we should say the bail is set at $81,000. there will be a public funeral for bart stabbing victim nia wilson set for next friday in oakland. members of her family joined protesters for a march through downtown oakland today demanding fair coverage by bay area media. the suspect john cowell has been charged with murder. the district attorney is investigating whether it was a hate crime. if it seems like you've been

spending more time waiting for the bus, you're not alone. there have been long waits in san francisco for the past several months. >> reporter: roberto takes the bus every day but he says the past few months catching the bus has been tough. it's so packed where you just can't really have the opportunity to get on. sometimes you're waiting for three buses before you get in. >> we have been working on this since about march. the numbers started to increase as far as operator unavailability. >> reporter: paul rose says the transportation age shortage of bus drivers. they have 40 operator openings but they're struggling to train existing employees. >> we have to train on the new vehicles, we have to train operators on the new radio system, we have to train operators to run the bus shuttles. >> when new operators apply,
