wildfires. >> sure does. yes, it does. >> people having to evacuate and then the weather not cooperating, mike. >> not at all. they have a red flag warning for the high fire danger due to a northwest wind, 25 miles per hour and temperatures well over 100 again this afternoon. it is bone dry up there. conversely back here at home a nice sea breze keeping once again most of us out of this extended and expanded heat wave that's gripped our state for the better part of a week. it's pretty misty out there also around the bay. let me throw up the clouds and see they're spreading to more neighborhoods and that's going to help take a sting out of the heat even inland where low to mid 90s will be dominant than the mid and upper 90s we've had the last couple days. we're waking up this morning to mid 50s to about 60s, my accuweather 12-hour planner, 59 at the coast, 72 around the bay, 85 inland at noon and comfortable evening for most of us, still a touch warm inland at 7:00, about 82 degrees. how about the traffic. >> let's see what roads are doing this morning.

here's a look at your drive times. 8 minutes westbound on the bay bridge. and as we're talking about the bay bridge, let's see what that looks like right now. you can see the cash lanes are stacking up. metering lights are not on. that should be happening in the next 30 minutes or so. and we are following breaking news in the south bay. a crash has left a chp officer hurt. >> the accident happened on clayton road in an unincorporated part of san jose and abc 7 news reporter matt keller just arrived there on the scene for us. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. this all started as call to chp for a vehicle crash here on clayton road. this is a remote area up here near mount hamilton and this is outside the city limits of san jose. take a look at the video. you can see it here, when officers arrived they found a vehicle that looks like a motorized car towed by another vehicle. the person ran off and the cart rolled back and hit the officer and his patrol vehicle. off. as for the officer's injuries a

spokesperson says they couldn't comment but are not considered life threatening. reporting live in san jose, matt keller >> thank you, matt. develop news in redding, fast moving flames forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes across shasta county. the carr fire started about 28 miles west of redding near the town of french gulch and burned all the way into the city limits. the wildfire has grown to nearly 29,000 acres and only 6% contained. cal fire says a privately hired bulldozer operator was killed fighting or battling the fire. three firefighters have been hurt in this. an area hospital is treating several burn victim. several mandatory evacuations have been ordered. our abc affiliate in redding krcr was on the air but had to abruptly stop their broadcast and get out. >> right now we're being evacuated. that's why we are kind of closing out right now.

>> yes. >> we are going to leave the station because it is now unsafe to be here. so like i said, we have all the information on our website. of course we'll be updating you from there as much as we can. >> we're going to go out on the mercy sky cam and leave you with this picture. please, please evacuate, everyone. stay safe. have a good night. >> boy, i know so many of you have friends and family who live in the redding area and this is scary. cal fire says dozens of homes have been destroyed and nearly 500 are still threatened. this morning the marsh fire in clayton is 75% contained and burned about 250 acres since it started wednesday afternoon. cal fire says one home burned, 13 structures are still threatened, there is a mandatory evacuation order for marsh creek road between morgan territory road and gill drive. firefighters expect to be in the area cleaning up for at least two more days. new this morning, shots fired in oakland. police were investigating the

area near 73rd and bancroft avenue around 11:30 last night and placed markers where they found shell casings on the ground. we are still working to find out if anyone was hurt. happening today, a man accused of killing a safeway co-worker in santa clara is due in court. 25-year-old gauge mccartney set to be arraigned this afternoon. the body of 54-year-old ray hyde was found across the street from the store last friday. investigators say the men worked together in the meat department. it's not clear what led up to the killing. this is the first homicide of the year in santa clara. a frightening attack in mountain view. a grandmother managed to fight off a woman who tried to kidnap her grandchild in broad daylight at fair month park on fairmont avenue. amanda dell castillo says how police found the suspect. >> reporter: police say it was along fairmont avenue, a toddler, mom and grandmother were approached by a woman

wearing a white mask over her mouth wednesday. the bizarre actions were followed by a brazen demand. >> a woman driven up, stopped, got out of her car and said i am here to take your child. >> reporter: police say the suspect is 31-year-old schauntel gomez, a transient out of monterey county. mountain view pd says when gomez reached to take the child, grandma took action and in the scuffle, grandma suffered injuries to her head. gomez then turned to the toddler's mom, making threats. >> that seemed to be enough to kind of thwart her attempts and she turned around and got back into her car and drove off. >> reporter: gomez didn't get far. a patrol officer found her early thursday morning turning into this shell station just two and a half miles from fairmont park. in gomez's car police found drug paraphernalia and the white mask victims described at the time of the attack. it was similar to the one seen here. she was arrested for attempted kidnapping, criminal threats, battery, and possession of drug

bridge cam. hard to see the bridge at all this morning. it's definitely foggy out there. but there is no fog advisory issued at this point. the plaintiffs who have sued over the cleanup of hunter's point are demanding san francisco city leaders take action. they want the city to use money to test the soil at the shipyard and check for cancer and other diseases. the lawsuit claims tetra tech put lives at risk falsifying results from contaminated soil samples. tetra tech denies the claim and offered to pay for retesting at the former naval shipyard. it is expensive to find a place to live in the bay area. >> it is. for the first time in six years you can save money if you rent instead of buy. a little bit of good news. true leah found more than 12% cheaper to rent a home in san jose than it is to buy one. thep gap is 5.5% in san francisco. still not cheap by any means. the median rent is 3500 per month in san jose, a little more

than 4,000 a month in san francisco. at the end of the day still renting and not owning anything. >> no. >> bittersweet. >> $4,000 and that is the median. >> that's the median. >> ouch. one of the most influential candidates convention wraps up in san jose. it is a chance to not only network, but to learn about some of the trends in the budding industry. the headliner yesterday was former deputy attorney general james cole. he crafted a memo that opened the door for states to legalize cannabis. current attorney general jeff sessions has rescinded the memo. cole says he wants the federal government to deal with cannabis as a medical pharmaceutical substance. >> if it's got a medical use let's find that out. if it doesn't, let's find that out. let's not ignore it. let's just do the science. >> a lot of people showed up to hear him speak. about 7500 people showed up for the summit's first two days. it's almost back to school

those flames. and then this last one here, from a viewer named anja, live from redding, you can see those flames right behind some of those homes there. certainly a really tough situation that we will update throughout the morning as our show continues. reggie? >> tough night for those folks. california is among a dozen states suing the trump administration over new restrictions to the affordable care act. the state attorney general announced the lawsuit on twitter yesterday. he says the new regulations would allow small businesses to give workers minimal health care coverage. he says insurers would be able to discriminate based on health status, age or gender and raise premiums. the white house has not yet responded to the lawsuit. the u.s. is the most dangerous place to give birth in the developed world. that is according to a new "usa today" investigation which looked at records from 75 hospitals. the report says each year 50,000 moertsz are severely hurt during

childbirth in the united states. about 700 mothers died. half of deaths can be prevented with better care while maternal deaths rose across the country california is the exception, deaths in the golden state fell by half between 1990 and 2015. safety experts and hospitals in california work together to set practices that society continues the gold standard of care. a flaw in amazon's surveillance technology. the facial recognition system falsely associated 28 members of congress with mugshots in a criminal database. democratic representatives sent a letter to jeff bezos demanding answers and cited an aclu test which recognition appeared bias toward people of color. amazon has been selling recognition as a crime fighting tool. some parents are adding a new item to their back-to-school shopping list, bulletproof inserts to fit inside a backpack

designed to stop a bullet fired from a handgun up to a 44 magnum. inserts are becoming more popular after recent school shootings. a gun shop owner in west palm beach florida, said he sold 200 inserts within the past year. >> they can't leave the school, the school under lockdown and they're sitting in the classroom like a sitting duck. this will at least give them some extra layer of protection. >> i actually think it's a great idea. it will be awesome for kids to have something to be able to protect themselves. >> inserts weigh about a pound and cost about $120. small price to pay to protect your children, but boy, a sign of the times. >> yeah. i don't think it's anything any of us wanted to see. the founder of papa john's pizza is suing the chain. john schnatter resigned as chair of the company after he reportedly used a racial slur during a conference call. now he wants access to the company's books and records. in a complaint filed yesterday he said he wants the documents because of the, quote,

heavy-handed way the company has treated him. schnatter calls the resignation a mistake. in today's "gma" first look, the mother of a missing iowa college student is talking about the moment she found out her daughter disappeared. abc news reporter alex perez has details. >> in this morning's "gma" first look mollie tibbett's mother is speaking out to abc news. it's been nine agonizing days since her daughter vanished. >> my son scott, he gave me a call, saying mom, did you know mollie didn't go to work, at which point i said, i will be right home. >> the university of iowa freshman set off alarms with family and friends when she didn't show up for work in brooklyn, iowa. volunteers combing through the dense cornfields near her running route but no sign of the 20-year-old. >> there is really no clues. there's a dci agent who says she has been in the business for 23 years and only one other case where she had so few leads.

as you're making your commute into work, golden gate bridge six minutes, westbound bay bridge ten minutes and san mateo at 12. and now we go to developing news in redding, the carr fire has really ballooned in size, ripping through shasta county and into west redding. >> it was a rough night. several areas are now under mandatory evacuations. one person has died. the carr fire tripled in size yesterday, growing to nearly 29,000 acres. you're adding in scorching temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions and a terrible combination. the fire just 6% contained. dozens of homes have been destroyed and there are 500 still threatened. cal fire says crews found the body of a privately hired bulldozer operator who was clearing vegetation in the fire's path. flames burned over him and his equipment. >> as we mourn the loss, we also battle a fire that is moving

extremely quickly and erratically into western redding. >> such dangerous conditions for firefighters. there are at least thwho got hu and one of the hospitals in the area has confirmed it is treating several burn victims. the carr fire was sparked by a mechanical issue involving a vehicle on monday. obviously they need all the help they can get right now in shasta county. some is coming from the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in san mateo as our fire crews head in two different directions. amy? >> hi, jessica. the bay area is springing into action, san mateo is one of five counties here in the region that is sending some help. one team launched from the peninsula yesterday. they are heading north up to the carr fire. that fire is threatening redding and has killed one person, so firefighters definitely need help up there as that fire continues to grow. but, officials say they can't ignore the southern part of the state. they need help down there too.

the city of san francisco is sending 22 firefighters to help on the cranston fire in riverside county. those who are going to help say there was no hesitation. >> everybody is willing to participate with the idea that at any point in time, you know, it could happen here in our city. >> reporter: and look at this, shout out of appreciation on twitter. thank you, sffd for rolling to help us in riverside county and then in all caps god bless you firefighters from the north. that shows the solidarity across the state during times like this. the bay area firefighters, their department at home want you to know they are not short staffed here. the staffing levels here are normal and safe. they are just sending the extra strike teams they can spare at this time. reporting live in san mateo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. governor jerry brown has

declared states of emergencies in mariposa where the ferguson fire is burning. it has charred more than 44,000 acres of land. it is only 27% contained. this is the one burning near yosemite. no flames in the park itself, but the fire has resulted in the closure of the park's valley floor at least until sunday. happening today the man accused of stabbing 18-year-old nia wilson to death at oakland's macarthur bart station is scheduled to be back in court. 27-year-old john cowell is charged with first-degree murder and did not enter a plea on wednesday. today he is going to be arraigned on a parole violation that happens at 9:00 a.m. he's scheduled to answer a plea on the murder charge next month. and the funeral for wilson will be held next friday at ax gospel church in oakland. it will be open to the public. a 28-year-old woman is in custody for the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist in crocket. christopher bunag was killed after a driver hit him from

behind on san pablo avenue. they received an anonymous phone call about the driver which led to an arrest. a bombshell dropping overnight in the ongoing russia investigation. multiple sources tell abc news michael cohen, the president's former personal attorney, claims that then candidate donald trump was aware of the june 2016 trump tower meeting before it happened. cohn says he was present when donald trump, jr. informed his father of the meeting. cohen is willing to state this to the special counsel investigating into alleged russian election meddling. north korea has turned over remains of what are believed to be a u.s. service members killed during the korean war. a u.s. air force plane carrying the remains landed in south korea last night. kim jong-un committed to returning the remains during his june summit with president trump. about 7700 u.s. soldiers are listed as missing from the korean war. the remains of 5300 of the soldiers are believed to be in north korea.

said he had to spend ten minutes every day closing. under california law workers have to be paid for any time they're required to be on the employer's premises. thousands of firefighters who attended a cal fire academy are going tok wages for overtime. the sacramento bee reports as part of a settlement, cal fire will pay out $4.1 million. it covers firefighters who went to the academy for over the past five years. the settlement also clears up what hours the cadets are considered to be on duty. this has caused some confusion and led to punishments for misconduct. if you feel like you're spending more time waiting for the bus you are not alone. a we first told you yesterday morning, there have been long waits in san francisco for the past several months. muni officials say the transportation agency has a shortage of bus drivers. they have 40 operator openings and they're struggling to train their existing employees. >> we have to train our operators on the new vehicles we have, operators on the radio

system we have, train operators to run the bus shuttles for tks. all this together kind of added to our operator availability issues we have going on since may. >> the president of the local union that represents muni operators says a bargaining change that restricts pay for new operators is one of the major factors in the shortage. muni officials say they expect more operators to be trained on their new vehicles by the end of august which should relieve some of that congestion. welcome news if you drive the golden gate bridge. in april engineers began scaling the 700 foot tall towers to get an up close inspection. their report says despite 81 years of rain, wind and fog, things are looking pretty good. the team of climbers found some rust and some corrosion on the rivets but no real structural issues. the towers could use a paint job and cosmetic work which bridge officials say they will be working on. >> she still looks great. needs a little bit of a lift.

according to a rescuer, the boys felt and saw nothing and matt gutman will reveal more details about the rescue in a special edition of "20/20." watch it here on abc 7 at 10:00 p.m. followed by abc 7 news at 11:00. a $40 million yacht owned by education secretary betsy devos was untied from its dock and set adrift. the captain of the sea quest called police on sunday when the crew realized the boat was floating. it had been moored on lake erie, west of cleveland, ohio. the 163 foot long yacht hit a dock and cost thousands of dollars of damage. it's one of ten vessels owned by devos and her family. investigators are reviewing surveillance video to try to identify who did it. let's check your traffic this morning. it is friday, our trouble spot is usually westbound tracy to dublin. it's in the red right now at 52 minutes if you're going on 580 this morning. it's to be expected. not friday light there. but otherwise, friday light

k 2 on the china/pakistan border is considered one of the most dangerous mountains in the entire world to climb. 350 people have done it. a bear in colorado wound up in a tight spot getting stuck in the storm drain. crews popped off the manhole cover and as you can see from the video the bear was able to figure it out and took off. it did not want to be a part of this. it went into an open space behind the neighborhood. officers aren't sure how the bear got stuck but found a dumpster that had branches and berries in it and maybe that caught its attention. there might have been a picnic basket under there. >> or one of the berries rolled in there and had to find it. >> i had to go back to a cartoon for that really stupid observation. coming up next at 6:00, new information emerging about the controversy that cost former san francisco's first lady kimberly guilfoyle her job at fox news. >> a wildfire in northern
