the bay area. good morning on this friday, july 27th. natasha and alexis have the day off. >> you're never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. check in with meteorologist mike nicco. it's hot across the state, mike. hard to fight those fires. >> it is. we'll take a look at how bad those conditions are going to be today coming up in less than seven minutes. we'll focus on us because we're immune from all that right now. thanks to the sea breeze, you can see the winds blowing from the coast, even faster than they did yesterday, gusting to 31 in fairfield, 14 concord. look the at the gray taking over. it won't be quite as hot for you today. unfortunately still reach the 90s this afternoon in my accuweather 12-hour planner, but only 70s around the bay and '60s at the coast. heading out this morning look for a little fog, little bit of mist near the coast. temperatures very cool in the mid to upper 50s. let's take a look outside with your traffic this morning. bay bridge toll plaza looking very light right now. we do have t metering lights flipped on. about a little over a half hour

ago, you can see traffic is running smoothly right now. let's take a look at drive times for the other bridges in the bay area. you can see everything in the green right now. westbound san mateo bridge at 14 minutes. everything else less than that. we are following breaking news right now in the south bay. an unusual crash that's left an officer injured. >> this happened on clayton road in an unincorporated part of san jose. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live on the scene. >> good morning, reggie and jessica. this started as a call of a crash up here on clayton road earlier this morning. this is a remote area outside of the city limits. take a look at the video and see what was happening here this morning. officers arrived and they found motorized car being towed by another vehicle. the chp says the person who was towing that vehicle ran off and the cart rolled back and hit the officer and his patrol vehicle. >> i really can't comment on that right now, but it's not life threatening.

>> reporter: now police say the suspects were able to get away at the time and there were no arrests. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. developing news now in redding, that is our big story today. fast-moving flames forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes across shasta county. the carr fire started monday about 28 miles west of redding near french gulch. it has burned all the way to the city limits. the wildfire has grown to nearly 29,000 acres. it is only 6% contained and you can see just how vicious this fire is. cal fire says a privately hired bulldozer operator was killed battling the fire. three firefighters have been injured. an area hospital says it is now treating several burn victims and mandatory evacuations have been ordered. last night our abc affiliate in redding krcr was on the air. they had to abruptly stop the broadcast and leave.

>> right now we are being evacuated. we are closing out. we are going to leave the station because it is unsafe to be here. like i said, we have all that information on our website, and, of course, we'll be updating you from there just as much as we can. >> we're going to go out on the mercy sky cam for please, please evacuate, everyone. stay safe. have a good night. >> cal fire says dozens of homes have been destroyed and 500 others threatened. >> we're staying on top of the carr fire through social media. some of the posts from people who live in and around the redding area. this is from a viewer named vanessa, saying evacuating. feels like the apocalypse. you can see those flames very eerie this morning. and this video here shared by someone with the handle highland gypsy saying that the carr fire already has made it to downtown

redding and evacuations orders have been issued for most of the city. you can see the fire raging. if you look closely looks like a helicopter there flying in the air trying to fight those flames. i want to show you this picture, this is also from redding, and you can see huge flames up from behind some of the homes still standing this morning. so some incredible images on social media. reggie? >> this morning, the marsh fire in clayton is 75% contained. it has burned about 250 acres since it started wednesday afternoon. cal fire says one home has burned, 13 structures are still threatened, and there is a mandatory evacuation order for marsh creek road between morgan territory road and gill drive. fit to be in the area cleaning up for at least two more days. let's take a look at the latest drought map that shows nearly all of california falls into some category of drought. we have yet to reach the worst stage which is exceptional drought but you can see the comparison last year on the

left, the drought is much worse now. happening today, a man accused of killing a safeway co-worker in santa clara is due in court. 25-year-old gage mccartney is set to be arraigned this afternoon. the body of 54-year-old ray hyde was found across the street from the store last friday. investigators say the men worked together in the meat department. it's not clear, though, what led up to the killing. this is the first homicide of the year in santa clara. a frightening attack in mountain view, a grandmother managed to fight off a woman who tried to kidnap her grand child. mountain view police say schauntel gomez is under arrest. police say the 31-year-old was wearing a white mask when she approached a mom, grandmother and toddler. the woman got out of her car and according to police said i am here to take your child. police say there was a scuffle and grandma suffered injuries to her head. >> it seemed to be enough to

thwart her attempts and she got back in her car and drove off. >> gomez didn't get far. patrol officer found her yesterday morning turning into the shell station just two and a half miles from fairmont park. in gomez's car police found drug paraphernalia and that white mask the victim described at the time of the attack. plaintiffs who sued over the cleanup of hunter's point are demanding city leaders take action. they want the city to use money to test the soil at the shipyard and check the area's residents for cancers and other diseases. the lawsuit claims tetra tech put lives at risk falsifying results from contaminated soil samples. tetra tech denies the claim and offered to pay for retesting at the former naval shipyard. a work place controversy has cost san francisco's former first lady her job. >> plus, the reason the disgraced former ceo of papa john's is suing the company he founded.

businesses to give workers minimal health care coverage. he says insurers would be able to discriminate based on health status, age or gender. and also raise premiums. the white house has not yet responded to the lawsuit. the founder of papa john's pizza is suing the chain. john schnatter resigned as chairman of the company after he reportedly used a racial slur during a conference call. now he wants access to the company's books and records. in a complaint filed he want the documents because of the, quote, heavy-handed way the company has treated him. schnatter called the resignation a mistake. one of the most influential today in san jose. it's a chance to not only network, but also learn about some of the trends in the budding industry. the headliner yesterday was formero that opened the door for states to legalize cannabis.

in fremont. starting off cloudy along the peninsula. watch out for delays sfo. we'll warm in the 70 in millbrae to 82 in redwood city. cloudy, low to mid 60s. south bay starting off cloudy and about 60 at 7:00. sunshine this afternoon and a widespread of temperatures from sunnyvale at 82, gilroy where the garlic festival starts at 96. north bay mostly cloudy and 53. sunshine and breezy, especially the closer to the water. that's why san rafael is 83 and santa rosa 90s. we'll head inland where we're starting off mainly sunny and comfortable in the 50s. we'll end up around 90 in san ramon. mid 50s to mid 60s again tonight. notice our temperatures taper just a little bit every day. expect this weekend upper 50s at the coast to low 60s in san francisco, mid 70s around the bay and upper 80s to low 90s inland. looks nice. >> let's check your traffic

no major incidents to report. our bridges seem to be okay. you can see our drive times this morning mostly in the green, a little tougher from tracy to dublin at 45 minutes. otherwise, pretty traffic light today on this friday. now on to developing news in redding, the carr fire has exploded in size, ripping through shasta county and into west redding. >> that means several areas are now under mandatory evacuations and one person has died. the carr fire tripled in size yesterday, growing to nearly 29,000 acres. hot temperatures, low humidity, windy conditions, all of it making it worse. it is now just 6% contained. dozens of homes have been destroyed and nearly 500 others that are threatened. cal fire says crews found the body of a privately hired bulldozer operator who was clearing vegetation in the fire's path. flames burned over him and his equipment. >> as we mourn

battle a fire that is moving extremely quickly and erratically into western redding. >> at least three firefighters were also hurt. one of the hospitals in the area has confirmed it is treating several burn victims. the carr fire was sparked by a mechanical issue involving a vehicle on monday. let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. mike, the weather conditions have really hampered some of the fire fighting efforts. >> it's been very hot for several days. now we've got the winds that are being produced up to 25 miles per hour. blowing from northwest to southeast. that's what's heightened the fire danger across places like redding and red bluff where you see the red flag warning is in effect now all the way through midnight. that's when we're going to have the most dangerous conditions. also battling the heat, an excessive heat warning continues until 8:00 this evening. the highs 105 to 112.

not only do we have blowing, dry air, but also feeling like a blast furnace up there with the temperatures at 112. it couldn't get much worse for the firefighters and those trying to escape the flames. >> thank you. meanwhile, governor brown has declared states of emergencies in several counties including mariposa where the ferguson fire is burning near yosemite. it has chard more than than 44,000 acres of land and 27% contained. there are no flames in the park itself in yosemite, but the fire has resulted in the closure of the park's valley floor. at least until sunday. you will have to make other weekend plans. back to what's happening in shasta county, they need all the help they can get. any support. they are getting that from the bay area. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in san mateo for us this morning. our local fire crews heading in two different directions. amy? >> hi, jessica. yeah, the bay area is responding and this is a regional effort.

san mateo is just one of five counties in our area sending firefighters to help. a group of them launched out of south san francisco yesterday. they're headed north up to the carr fire. they say they are willing to jump in with the attitude it could happen here and we would want the help. 22 firefighters from san francisco are headed south. they're going to the cranston fire in riverside county. >> not necessarily surprised that we're doing it. it's unfortunate that we're at a point where we have so many of these devastating wildfires that we do have to do it. >> reporter: a look at this picture, this is taken in southern california by the santa clara strike team. they are on the cranston fire where it is miserably hot. fire officials do not know when these teams will be home. they do want you to know that staffing here at home is at safe, normal levels. they only sent the firefighters that they could spare without sacrificing service here. reporting live in san mateo, amy

hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. i should note that our colleague laura anthony will be traveling to the redding area to cover the fire that is exploding overnight and now into this morning. look for her reports later today on abc 7 news. happening today the man accused of stabbing 18-year-old nia wilson at macarthur's bart station is scheduled to be back in court. 27-year-old john cowell is charged with first-degree murder, but he did not enter a plea on wednesday. today cowell is set to be arraigned on a parole violation at 9:00 a.m. he's scheduled to enter a plea on the murder charge next month. the funeral for wilson will be held next friday at ax gospel clutch in oakland. it will be open to the public. a 28-year-old woman is in custody for the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist in crocket. christopher bunag was killed tuesday night after a driver hit him from behind on san pablo avenue. the chp received an anonymous phone call about the driver which then led to an arrest.

developing news, trading began on wall street moments ago and investors reacting to twitter's newly released second quarter earnings report. the san francisco-based company is now seeing its stock tumble. it looks like we are getting close to down 16%. now before today twitter's stock was up 79%. twitter reported the number of active users worldwide dropped by a million since the first quarter and that trend is expected to continue as the social media company removes fake accounts from its platform and twitter had a net income of more than $100 billion that matched analyst expectations, but it's not helping them this morning. facebook's mark zuckerberg is under new pressure today, some investors are calling for him to step down as company chairman. this is after its stock plummeted nearly 19%, chopping $119 billion off its market value. so this morning investors are watching to see if it will recover. right now you can see it's

actually slightly up. facebook's stock closed yesterday at $176 a share. down more than 41 points from wednesday's all-time high close. investors reacted to quarterly earnings reports that missed expectations on revenue and showed slowing user growth. it was the biggest one-day drop in value for any publicly traded company ever. right now, the trump administration is still working to reunite hundreds of children taken at the border with their families. officials say more than 1800 children are either with their parents or sponsors. but about 700 more remain in government custody with no clear idea when they will be reunited. a federal judge gave the administration until yesterday to reunify all eligible children. officials say some parents have been deported and their children need to be flown to their home countries. a new bombshell dropping overnight in the ongoing russia investigation. the president's former personal

attorney now claims that then candidate donald trump knew about a 2016 meeting at trump tower with a russian lawyer before it happened. cohen says he was present when mr. trump's eldest son, donald trump, jr., informed his father of the meeting. cohen is willing to state things to the special counsel investigation into the alleged russian meddling. earlier this morning, president trump responded to cohen's allegation, here's what he tweeted, quote, i did not know of the meeting with my son, don junior, sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam. he even retained bill and crooked hillary's lawyer. gee, i wonder if they helped him make the choice. unquote. you are never more than seven minutes from my accuweather forecast. hi, everybody. start with temperatures down in the south bay. mountain view 58, same thing in morgan hill, the rest of us in the low 60s. until you get to san jose, 63

degrees we've got 60 in redwood city and cupertino. mid to upper 50s about everywhere else until bay, low 50s in novato. for your commute, there's a little moisture hanging in the air, especially the closer you are to the peninsula and the coast. it's going to be a little gusty north of the bay bridge during the afternoon and evening hours and a gigantic summer spread taking mass transit from inland to say san francisco. here's a look at the peninsula, waking up mainly cloudy, 61, becoming mostly sunny and 66 at 10:00, sunshine low to mid 70s throughout the afternoon hours. up in the north bay start off cloudy and 55 at 8:00, sunny and already 80 at noon, we'll tou90 briefly at 4:00. for san francisco a lot of cloud cover especially along the coast, little more sunshine around the bay, low to mid 60s across the city today. we'll take a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast for the weekend coming up. >> thank you. we've been doing pretty well on the roads this morning but

there is still fire burning in the is area. do you feel safe? >> there's still -- well i'm with a support team who -- this is what they're trained for doing. i grabbed a ride with them this morning. and i'm up here now just trying to get a look at some of the damage around town. when i got to town last night about 9:00, it was absolutely chaos. it was gridlock on the streets, people trying to evacuate. there were some mixed messages about reverse 911 had gone to the wrong area at one point and i think people thought they had to leave and then it got canceled so when the real one came out for most of west redding or parts of west redding i don't think people thought they needed to evacuate the second time. so i think it did catch some people off guard. last night, 9:00, 10:00, midnight, the streets were packed as people tried to get what they can and get out of their houses. i will tell you, we've driven around parts of west redding this morning and a lot of land

marks like the elementary school i went to on social media i was seeing last night it was gone, i was happy to see it was still standing this morning. i'm just trying to give people a good perspective of what the situation is here. but a lot of west redding is still vaitevacuated this mornin. i would say most of the neighborhoods of the west side of town are evacuated. the streets are a ghost town. oh, my gosh. i don't know if you just heard that, but a piece of metal roofing fell off the top of the chimney stack that used to stand two stories tall and it's now rubble and a piece of the roof sitting up on it came down. my mom's [ inaudible ] is perfect in front of the house where it was yesterday. yeah. it's just crazy. it's very thick smoke. the streets are empty. there's a lot of fire crews out and about. the chp is out and about. just trying to keep the streets

news app. >> welcome news now if you drive the golden gate bridge. in april engineers began scalint an up close inspection. their report saying despite 81 years of rain, wind and fog things are actually looking pretty good. te team of climbers found some rust and corrosion on some of the rivets to be expected, but no real structural issues. the engineers say well the towers could use a paint job and cosmetic work, but bridge officials say they are working on that. >> a bear in colorado wound up in a tight spot getting stuck in the storm drain. crews popped off the manhole cover as you can see from the video. the bear was able to figure out how to free himself and then made a run for it. right into the open space behind this colorado springs neighborhood. officers don't know how the bear got there, but they did find a dumpster nearby that had branches and berries that may have caught its attention. >> next the seven things you need to know before you go. >> first our instagram picture

just joining us or heading out the door here are seven things to know before you go. number one, new numbers from cal fire. the carr fire burning in shasta county has nearly doubled in size. it's now grown to 44,000 acres and containment has dropped to only 3%. two people are now confirmed dead. number two, at least five bay area counties are assisting with mutual aid. they are responding to the carr fire we mentioned. they're also helping to battle the cranston fire in southern california where conditions are brutally hot. >> number three the red flag warnings up around the redding area through the rest of today and exceptionally hot everywhere except for most of our neighborhoods as you look at your accuweather 12-hour planner, 60s and 70s, maybe a few 80s around the bay but the 90s will stay inland. >> number four, a chp officer
