now from abc7, live breaking news. >> that breaking news, two young children and their great grandmother missing in the redding fire. their home is gone. >> last night, melody a bloodso-called her to come home. by the time she got back the great-grandmother and her children were gone. >> they're pleading for the family's help in a desperate search. >> the whole house is completely burnt to nothing. >> we're calling. we're trying so hard to figure out where they could possibly be, if they did make it out of

the house. >> if you know the family's whereabouts, you could find shelly's post with contact information on abc7news.com. if you know anything, please help out. >> tonight, new mandatory evacuation orders that could be in the path of the stretching flames all the way to the gulch, the evacuation area bigger than the fire area. 37,000 people forced from their homes now and the fire destroyed 500 structures up from the 125 announced late this afternoon. >> it's burned ove47 >> tonight, the car fire is flaring up at whiskey town lake driven by the hot and dry conditions. as the sun set to the west, trees exploding, but fortunately

here there are no homes in the path of the carr fire. down below though for many the damage already done. here, home after home is burned to the ground. dozens in all from the fire that ripped through here in the overnight hours, driven by dry fuels, low humidity and high winds. >> everyone likes to say they produce their own weather. basically, when these fires start burning at this rapid speed, it's almost unsafe to put first responders in front of them. >> reporter: up the road a few miles, an entire community lost, the small town of keswick, population 500 people, completely demolished. just two homes survived. the carr fire is far from finished. this team from the bay area is keeping a close eye on the homes that survived in lake keswick

estates. >> you can see the smoke raised up and allowed for preheating of mateials down here and the trees especially to get oxygen back into it. that's why you're seeing the fire start to flare up a little bit. >> reporter: tonight, while this fire is very active and nowhere near containment so far we haven't seen the disastrous winds we had last night. near redding, abc7 news. with thousands of people evacuated from their homesy the red cross is very busy. at shasta college, it is packed tonight, dion. >> reporter: it is indeed. now that night has fallen we're seeing relief from triple digit temperatures and people outside getting rest from a stressful day and we saw senior citizens

together shooting the breeze and smoking marijuana trying to make the best of this situation. >> at shasta college, the lawn has become somewhat of a campground even for the littlest. >> the fire was close to our house so we had to evacuate. >> reporter: on cam miss several red cross evacuation shelters and volunteers offering everyday items like animal crates for families with pets and this filled with cots, estimates could be as many as 700 evacuees. michael is tending to a sick dog. >> very stressful, going back and forth trying to figure out if we were supposed to evacuate or not. it was hell. >> reporter: stories of struggle. a single mom, a student at shasta with three little boys huddled in a tent outside so as not to disturb other evacuees.

>> the view inside is traumatic! there's cots lined up and people struggling with their loss. >> reporter: one of the most poignant stories, jason campbell, while leading a crew from yosemite, he returned home to his home up in flames and senator ted gates offering assistance to those in need. >> my hat is off to those doing the best. >> reporter: and gratitude from the survivors friday night. >> reporter: they roll up in cars and tell me they still need donations. one man rolled down his window and showed we 50 pillows he just bought from walmart.

>>s >> nice man to bring those pillows. >> some of our staff are redding natives as well as hur executive producer, who drove through some of the neighborhood. >> all gone. >> our best to kerry always. you can see some of the homes have been burned, others still standing, a strange facet for disaster, some make it, some don't. kerry's home is safe but her mother's was lost. we wish her well. >> some seeking shelter in the bay area and the attorney general warning about price gouging during this emergency. >> reporter: from the safety of the east bay, nicco and rebecca smith worry about their friends still in shasta county. >> even the ones who evacuated, they moved the evacuation center. it's really scary. >> reporter: the carr fire is out of control.

>> they're not optimistic what tonight will look like at all. >> reporter: nicco's parents insisted they advocate wednesday having survived the valley fire in lake county. >> they got out of that fire and know what it looks like. lo and behold -- >> midnight last night they were starting evacuations at shasta lake. >> reporter: they grabbed pictures and a lamp and two cats ready for adoption. >> show your pretty eyes. >> reporter: they're hoping people still in shasta county will get out before the situation becomes dire. >> i'm seeing frantic posts from people saying they can't get out because so many people are being told to evacuate, they're bottlenecked. >> reporter: california's price gouging laws protects people from houses and gasoline and other essential services.

>> the attorney general set up his website this afternoon and you can file if you need to. two firefighters were killed fighting the fire and two marin firefighters are hurt. we're learning more about them. live in marin city, carlos. >> reporter: all three men are recovering from those injuries. two of them are still in shasta county tonight waiting to come home. the other is already here resting. scott pederson, tyler barnes and brian cardoza, these are the three firefighters fighting the fire who were burned in shasta county. they took these images before getting in their fire engine. >> the main fire front approached them and faced a sudden heat block of vegetation.

>> reporter: these two were released last night. and cardoza was seen for second degree burns to his face. we made contact with brian now resting at his home in sonoma county. his girlfriend tells us he's in good spirits. this fire season not halfway over already exhausting the fire crews. >> coming right back into the fire season this year we haven't had the opportunity to get a break from fire season. >> reporter: this picture of a handful of fatigued firefighters catching rest after saving homes highlights the challenges they face with no break in sight. marin county has a total of 85 firefighters working throughout the state to battle these fires, 44 are in shasta county working for containment over the weekend. carlos, abc7 news. >> thank you.

look at this video from our tower cam over the east bay hills. what do you notice? the haze and smoke in mendocino county all the way down here to the bay area. the conditions firefighters can expect over the weekend. >> that's right. let's look at the current conditions, 85 degrees. cooler, humidity up, winds gusting and they die down early tomorrow afternoon and pick back up again tomorrow night. the other challenge, look at the heat, 110 degrees both days this weekend, hot conditions are not a help especially when triple digits are expected well into next week. >> thanks very much. tonight, several families are being let back into their homes near the ferguson fires,

burning 46,000 acres and they lifted the evacuation orders for the subdivision but there won't be food services until next week. >> the sheriff in mendy sino just put out new evacuation orders for the river fire. it has burned 4,000 acres and destroyed a mobile home since it started just this afternoon. >> the ranch fire north of ukiah has spread to 1,000 acres now. residents are in danger and have been told to stay vigilant because conditions can change quickly. >> we have complete coverage of all the major fires burning online. look for maps of the fire zones, read up stories from survivors and find links to donate to go

happening now, a recovery effort is under way in daly city, a trench construction worker. it happened this morning and

amanda has the story. this construction site is usually filled with dozens of workers. as of 11:20 friday morning rescue workers had taken over the crew focused on recovering a man's body. a 20-inch trench collapsed beneath them. >> they were getting out of the trench at the time when the trench collapsed in crushing one of the workers. >> reporter: it's unclear how deep the body was buried but clyde preston said the trench was about 12 feet deep. he said the instability of the debris required special equipment to be brought in used in rescues. >> i'm hoping they'll be able to find him. i feel bad for his family. >> reporter: avril lives across the street from the new housing development currently being

constructed. >> reporter: bill bogden says it's a tough day for everybody involved. >> we lost a good man and a day we try to avoid. >> reporter: cal osha investigators were on the scene friday. i'm amanda, abc7 authorities in santa cruz county arrested a man they say has been stealing gasoline for months. this suv had the tank drilled. officials said there was gas siphoning equipment, drills and gas inside. the driver, michael harrington, was arrested. the weekend is upon us. a lot going on, the marathon in san francisco, checking out the weather for that. >> and meteorologist, sandy patel following the weather for the firelines. >> the temperature is dropping

and hopefully that will help the firefighters in the overnight hours but not for tomorrow, another hot one. this is a view of the smoke areas drifting into the bay, mendocino and shasta county. the marine layer has been steadily deepening, 1400 feet deep tonight pushing across the north bay and east bay, some smoke around the santa rosa area. something to watch out for. temperatures in the mid-50s to 70s and except for inversion, 82 degrees. downtown san francisco, we have fog. count on fogs, low clouds and spotty morning drizzle. cool to warm days next week.

you may need the windshield wipers in the early morning hours tomorrow because of the mist and drizzle and for the rest of you, looking at sunshine. temperatures low 50s to low 60s. one thing to watch out for if you do have plans early, the visibility will be fluctuating at times due to that fog. 80 degrees in south bay. 93 in gilroy. upper 50s, cloudy breezy and cool. some people like it that way. that's your place to go if you want to be in that kind of weather. 60 in san francisco, 60 in the sunset district. 96, cloverdale, low 80s santa rosa, novato to napa. 77 fremont, inland areas, 92 in concord and 93 in livermore.
