granddaughter emily and 5-year-old great grandson james. on thursday night melanie caused her to come back to the home because the fire was getting close. the family claims police wouldn't let him through the roadblock because of the flames. the death toll stands at five including two firefighters. about a dozen people have been reported missing. here is a realtime map showing where the carr fire is burning. the red line is the active perimeter. redding is in the bottom right-hand corner. today cal fire said this fire is unprecedented burning in every direction at the same time and firefighters don't know why about 81,000 acres have burned due to a vehicle fire. officials say the number is likely to go even higher. today president trump approved an emergency declaration and ordered federal assistance for the firefighting efforts. governor brown has ordered flag

to be flown at half staff on behalf of the two firefighters killed. one was jeremy stoke. today the other was private bulldozer operator don smith. several communities to the west of redding were evacuated overnight. abc 7's laura anthony is live with that part of the story. laura? >> reporter: hi, eric. a couple of small communities were evacuated. fortunately, as far as we know, no more homes burned. we're in a community, lake redding estates. we talked about the winds and the influence of the high winds on this fire. this is a vivid illustration of what the winds did right next to where the homes burned. as you can see, an oak tree, a limb completely crushing this car. we walk down the block. check this out. we've seen trees tossed about,

iron furniture tossed about, roofs ripped off houses. to give you an idea of how strong the winds were and what created this disaster. >> reporter: firefighters scramble to set a backfire as flames race toward the home just above. part of the struggle to save as many structures as possible despite the unrelenting rath of the carr fire. >> down the road crews cut damaged and burning trees, anything that could prevent firefighters from getting through.% eye go with a population of just over 600 residents is one of dozens of communities west of redding threatened by the onslaught. crews standing ready to defend it if necessary. in the meantime, local volunteers working with the u.s. forest service move from property to property trying to evacuate horses, any animals that might be left behind. >> i'm not sure how many days it's been.

i wake up in the morning, get home about midnight. keep on fighting the fire and go back to the animals. >> goegats, dogs. made another run, got some more horses. there was another gentleman, 70s, 80s, didn't want to leave. i think we talked him in to leaving. he was in tears. >> reporter: here are some more examples of what these high winds did. we have a light post strewn on the ground there. this is a tree behind me. we go down the street, more destruction, more branches. it looks like a tornado came through here. we're just a couple of blocks again from where several dozen homes burned here at lake redding estates. these folks i'm sure will be relieved their homes didn't burned. probably, though, a bit surprised by what they're going to find when they get home. live near redding, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> laura, thank you so much. many agencies are supporting the firefighting effort including the california national guard.

it tweeted this picture today. nearly 800 soldiers and airmen are in shasta county. for the latest on the weather conditions, let's check in with meteorologist drew >> winds in excess of 35 to 40 miles an hour. right now a temperature around 100 degrees. humidity is bone dry at 18%. the winds out of the southeast. the next 24 hours, there is no dominant wind direction. the wind direction is pretty erratic. you see from the west to the northwest to the south those winds will be peaking in the next couple hours. a red flag warning still in effect for much of the redding area until monday morning. talking winds gusting over 30 miles an hour. humidity, bone-dry levels in the afternoon. unfortunately, the next seven days, for the week ahead, looking at the redding area, they will stay above 100 degrees each and every afternoon at least through next weekend. we'll look a little closer in a

few minutes. >> we'll have the latest on the carr fire throughout tonight and the rest of the weekend. stay with abc 7 news from laura anthony and dion lim. volunteers from the north bay are rallying support for animals. the ride launched by the same folks who lost everything during last year's fires. cornell barnard has more. >> reporter: help on the way for people an animals displaced by the carr fire. some of the hay could soon be on its way to shasta county, thanks to one woman who survived the north bay fires and is paying it forward. >> want to save animals just like these guys, huh? >> reporter: barbara hell ford nearly lost her prized horses last year when the wildfires destroyed her stable and riding school. now a new fire in redding

sparking back old fears. >> brings back that horrible night in october and the weeks that followed, the worry, the fear, not knowing where your animals are. >> reporter: she and other volunteers want to help evacuees at the carr fire by collecting donations of food to send up north. >> horses, dogs, cats, cows, chickens, goats, whatever. they all need to eat. >> reporter: she's putting the word out on her facebook page. >> anything you can think of that someone would need for their pet or livestock -- >> brock co-'s feed store stepping up with donations of hay. the manager helped fire victims last year and can do it again. >> i've been in this business so long, a lot of wonderful people are ready to help. >> reporter: so far the response has been positive from a community that's truly been there. >> we can't put the fire out for them, but we can at least take some of the worry out of their

heart. >> reporter: halford is still working out logistics but plans to accompany a convoy of convoys and trucks up to shasta county. live in sonoma, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. two fires in mendocino county burned close to 10,000 acres and injured seven firefighters. it's called the mendocino complex fire. both fires began yesterday afternoon in ukiah and are returning about 30 miles apart. 400 structures are threatened. mandatory evacuations are in place for several areas. in mendocino county the 8000 block of mendocino road. go to abc7news.com for the latest on the evacuation orders. a mystery at an east bay b.a.r.t. station. a young woman's body found

breaking news in napa county where a wildfire has burned multiple homes at the southern end of lake berryessa. evacuation orders have been issued. this wildfire started near steel canyon road and royal grande drive. the nap a pa county sheriff is warning residents who live in that area to evacuate. those are mandatory evacuation orders. the sheriff asked the highway patrol to set up roadblocks and road closures. cal fire and napa county fire are responding to the new fire burning on the southern end of lake berryessa. we'll bring you an update as soon as we learn more.

firefighters in oakland made quick work at a fire at a homeless encampment in snow park near lake merritt. firefighters also had to deal with multiple small explosions from butane tanks. flames started from a cooking fire that got out of control. no one was hurt. another death reported on b.a.r.t. property. b.a.r.t. police responded to the dublin-pleasanton station at 5:30 for reports of an unresponsive female. a 26-year-old woman who was released from santa rita jail four hours earlier was reported dead at the scene. the woman had a bump on her head but no other signs of foul play were found. three other deaths at the b.a.r.t. station. last year 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death. supporting family reunification with a time-honored tradition. the local lemonade stand raising money and awareness as part of a national effort for migrant children separate friday their

weekend. we're well into the 90s. live doppler 7 along with satellite this afternoon showing you we have that marine layer right against the coast lean at this hour. p tick tour outside, a live look from our east bay hills camera pointed inland. you can definitely see a layer of haze, even a little smoke coming from the wildfires to our north. in fact, i do want to take you into mendocino county where we do track those two fires, named the ranch fire and the river fire. cal fire has combined these two fires into one name called the mendocino complex right now. the winds are pretty active. out in the west right now, from 13 to 20 miles per hour. that would be blowing smoke towards lake county. then you have a northerly wind near clear lake, so that smoke would kind of be going in a clockwise the north bay and seeing smoke, it's likely to due to the pairs of fires. you notice the yellow dots for

much of the north day and that means moderate air quality. we'll have smoke in our atmosphere for parts of the region as we continue to see the fires burning to the north. you do notice around san francisco and oakland, good air quality the next 24 hours. part of the reason why, it's all about the winds the next 24 hours. those winds are coming off the ocean water, pretty stiff at sfo at 23 miles an hour. what that does, it will continue to keep the smoke away from parts of the area, but those winds will begin to weaken overnight tonight. tomorrow morning, some areas will wake up to a little haze. the winds create a wide range in temperatures. it is cool along the coast. at this hour only 55 for half moon bay. you jump inland, well into the 90s. 94 for brentwood. clear lake 102. ukiah 100 degrees. where we have the fires burning, it is hot. it will continue to be tomorrow as well. the marine layer deepening along
