burning across california tonight. crews in northern california are focused on four fires right now. the car fire in and around redding, the river and ranch fires in lake county, and the steel fire in napa county. governor brown has declared new states of emergency in mendocino, napa, and lake counties tonight. new fires there have destroyed homes. this is video of what used to be homes near lake berryessa. we have team coverage tonight across the state. abc 7 news anchor dion lim is in redding. meteorologist drew tuma standing by to update us on conditions on the fire lines, but first let's get to abc 7 news reporter carlos sausedo live near lake berryessa. carlos? >> just complete devastation out here tonight. a toefltal of eight homes damag or destroyed in this fire. as you can see, the flames going pretty strong. this used to be someone's home. now just dark rubble. this of course is something that these residents have been preparing for years now but

never experienced until tonight. even as firefighters began making progress on the steele fire, the apock liptic nature of the inferno is taking its toll. >> i've never seen it like this before. it's just here we go again. >> reporter: evacuation orders are new new for stu williams. he stayed behind to protect his home but seeing part of his neighborhood up in flames upsetting to say the least. >> this is a small community. we know -- pretty much know one another. it's just devastating, very sad. >> reporter: a total 6 eight homes damaged or destroyed. the fire broke out at around 4:30 this afternoon. emergency crews rushed to put out the flames, attacking it from the ground and air. >> we were able to get enough firefighters in here and aircraft in here quickly to hold it to that number even though one structure is too many. >> reporter: around 300 residents of berryessa, highlands and pleasure cove forced to evacuate. >> just my kids. just the pets. nothing else. didn't care about anything else.

it was really close. i don't know if my house is there. >> reporter: the cause still unknown but the dry brush and heat helped fuel conditions. >> we're accustomed to it as the new normal but growing up here you know this is what you get. >> reporter: part of the lake had to be closed off which meant boaters had to pack up and leave. >> it's a bummer, but i feel sorry for the people who have lost homes more than anything. >> reporter: and again, eight families won't have a home to return to. so far 150 acres have burned with containment only at 10%. there is a nearby evacuation center that's been set up. that's in downtown napa. in the meantime firefighters will remain here overnight to make sure there aren't any flare-ups. reporting live in napa county, carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. >> kaurls, thank you very much. right now residents in lake and mendocino counties have been chased out of their homes by a growing wildfire. two wildfires, the river fire and ranch fire near ukiah started as separate wildfires yesterday. today they combined to become

the mendocino complex fires. 14,000 acres are burned altogether. new evacuation orders were issued today. this evening they've quickly expanded with more neighborhoods in both counties being ordered or advised to evacuate. the sutter lakeside hospital is in the evacuation zone and has been evacuated. patients there transported to other nearby hospitals. this map gives us an idea of where the 34e7bd seino complex fires are burning. cal fire reports the fires are just 5% contained with resources arriving throughout the state and the bay area to help out. the red cross just announced a new shelter opened up about five minutes ago at twin pine casino. and look at this video taken from lakeport, a community that's right now under an evacuation advisory. it shows the enormity of the fire and what firefighters are up against. we have updated evacuation information on our website at abc7news.com. meteorologist drew tuma is tracking the conditions firefighters are facing tonight on fire lines across the state.

drew? >> yeah, eric. earlier this afternoon it was the wind and the heat that was an issue. thankfully, the heat is decreasing and the relative humidity is coming up at this hour. let's take you to lake berryessa where we have our steele fire. this is the latest fire to develop in napa county. 80 degrees the current temperature but the relative humidity is on the rise and it will continue to rise in the coming hours. but we'll take you to the river fire and the ranch fire in mendocino county current winds still very gusty but the wind direction is pretty erratic. near lakeport it's to the north. hopland it's to the south. future tracker wind gusts will show you the winds will calm down early tomorrow morning near the fire. however, tomorrow afternoon we do expert winds to pick up once again and become an issue for firefighters. we'll take a look at how hot we get tomorrow afternoon. coming up in the full accuweather forecast in just a few minutes, eric. >> all right, drew, thank you. tonight the situation in redding is bleak as the wildfire in shasta county continues to burn out of control. here's the latest.

the carr fire is now nearly 84,000 acres, more than twice the size of redding itself. the fire is only 5% contained. 536 structures have been destroyed. nearly 5,000 more are still under threat. the death toll rows to 5 today after word that a great grandmother and two children perished in the fire. abc 7 news anchor dion lim is live in redding tonight, and dion, you spoke with a close friend of the family dealing with the death of three loved ones tonight. >> reporter: that's right, eric. the bledsoe family is big and tight-knit. so they're spending time with each other tonight. they didn't want to go on camera understandably but did speak to me on the phone with an fornt message they want to send to the world, that their family is resilient and special and that a widower needs all the support he can get. >> they found her draped over the children from what i've been told. and you know, that just shows that she did everything she could until the very end. >> reporter: a close family friend of melanie bledsoe and her two great grandchildren,

james sxemly roberts, recalls how much joy the children brought to the world. >> james wanted to be his great granddaddy, and his sister just glowed. she lit up the room. >> reporter: and the horrors of their deaths at the hands of the carr fire. >> it all happened so fast. >> reporter: thursday before the flames reached the bledsoe home near keswick estates melanie's husband of nearly 30 years ed had gone out help others whose homes were threatened by flames. >> in doing that selfless act he lost every single thing on this planet he cared about. >> reporter: a nearby neighbor recalls how swift and strong those flames were, seemingly coming out of nowhere. >> we could see flames coming out of this side and our fear was we were going to get trapped. >> reporter: in what seemed like the blink of an eye it was too late. a gas line burst into flames and consumed the bledsoe home. what remain now are memories and helping a widower get back on his feet. >> a lot of the mourning's been happening already, and he hid it well. he's a very stoic man. he won't break in front of

others. and even now he's trying to be that strong man to get everybody through it. >> reporter: it's almost too heartbreaking to handle. the family says had there been evacuation orders for ed and melanie's home, their neighborhood, perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided. authorities, though, they keep reiterating that even if your home is at the slightest risk just leave. the family does have a go fund me site set up. we have a link to it at our website, abc7news.com. in redding tonight, i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. >> dion, thank you very much. a hotline has been set up to report missing people. it is 530-225-4277. so far about a dozen people have been reported missing or remain unaccounted for. the sheriff is asking anyone who evacuated to check in with friends or family. well, the destruction in and around redding is coming into focus as the firefight goes on. hundreds and hundreds of homes lost in the inferno and it's not

just flames leaving a path of destruction. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is in redding tonight. >> reporter: hi, eric. we're going to get to that firefight in a minute. but we wanted to just show you a different kind of damage and destruction here in this neighborhood. we're just a couple of blocks from where dozens of homes burned but we can show you a vivid illustration of what the winds did. more than 70 miles per hour that took these trees down, toppled them. as the fire was raging just a couple blocks away. in this case this tree actually hit the house. it's an inferno that more than doubled in size overnight. the kind that destroys nearly everything in its path. and so far the carr fire shows no signs of letting up. near ico fire crews focused squarely on protecting lives and property. like this home on a hill where the residents evacuated overnight. this is what it's all about. just outside igo today. setting backfires.

firefighters are trying to save the homes that are in this fire's path. in northwest redding it appeared all but a few homes have been destroyed along swayze drive, leaving just a few remnants of life here before the fire. the scramble to save animals continued. in this case a horse named good boy. >> how grateful are you for the help here? >> very grateful. i want to stick around seeing what was going to come out of it. >> i had a house fire in '97 and lost everything. and i've been wanting to pay back. and this is the way i'm able to pay back. >> we're out here just doing our business. >> reporter: volunteer tucker zimmerman told us he's helped save dozens of animals and one man. >> i actually went into the neighborhood and every house was on fire, got him pulled out, protected him with a garden hose until an engine could come by. and they took over from there. got his american flag and gave it to his wife because i promised that to her.

>> reporter: here's another look at some of the damage left behind by the high winds here in lake redding estates. no doubt these folks will return to their homes grateful they didn't burn but also surprised by what the winds left behind. near redding laura anthony, abc 7 news. many bay area firefighters were on the front lines of those fires burning in northern california. video shared by an alameda county firefighter illustrates just how extreme the conditions are in redding and the dangers crews are facing. just look at that wall of fire. unfortunately the firefighters fighting the carr fire are not going to get any relief from the triple-digit weather anytime soon. temperatures there expected to reach near 100 degrees or more each of the next seven days. redding has faced triple-digit heat for the past 14 days in a row creating near-ideal conditions for fires to thrive. police say looters are now targeting evacuated neighborhoods in redding with several incidents being reported every day. >> people driving through neighborhoods going around our

road blocks shouldering doors, getting into residences that maybe haven't been burnt. and so they are looking to steal items from the residents. >> the chief says they've identified several suspects but have made no arrests. police patrols have been increased in the neighborhood to look specifically for criminals. california's attorney general has also warned against price gouging for gas, housing and other essential services during times of emergency. well, the carr fire is hitting close to home for us here at abc 7 news. some of our staff are redding natives as well as our former executive frurs kerry loring. kerry has been posting videos to facebook of what she's been seeing all day. take a look. >> this whole subdivision's just gone. i think i've seen a couple houses at the entrance. the second entrance at land park off of buena. a couple houses right there were good. but everything, once you get inside and once you turn on ferg-ton, it looks like it's

barnard is in sonoma with details. >> we feel their pain. we truly do. >> reporter: barbara halford knows what it's like to run from a fire. she nearly lost her prize horses moose and boomer last october when the wildfires destroyed their stable and barbara's riding school. >> we pay it forward. i had so many people come out and help me during the fire. >> reporter: halford and other volunteers want to help evacuees and their animals of the carr fire by collecting donations of food to send up north. >> horses, dogs, cats, cows, chickens, goats, whatever. they all need to eat. >> reporter: she's put out the word for help and dongsz on her facebook page and even making pleas in person. >> anything you can think of that someone would need for part of their lives. >> reporter: bronco's old field barn in sonoma stepping up. up.. the manager helped fire victims last year. >> i know a lot of wonderful people that are happy to help. >> my inbox is flooded.

>> reporter: so far the response has been positive from a community that's truly been there. >> just knowing that people care because it's really one of the worst times of your life. and you just feel so frightened and worried. we can't put the fire out for them but we can at least take some of the worry out of their heart. >> reporter: now, logistics are still being worked out but halford plans to send supplies to shasta county over the next several days. in sonoma cornell barnard, abc 7 news. yosemite national park would normally be filled with tourists tonight. instead the park is closed as firefighters near the park try to keep the ferguson fire at bay. it has burned 49,000 acres on the western edge of yosemite. yosemite valley will not reopen until at least next friday. full containment on that blaze is not expected until august 15th. as this brutal fire season continues you can head to abc7news.com. we have a husful guide to help

the family of the man killed friday at a daly city construction site is talking to

abc 7 news about how they're coping with the tragedy. relatives have identified the victim as 34-year-old abel saucedo quinonez. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has our story. >> reporter: the death of a daly city construction worker is being felt far beyond the job site. family members say abel sauceda quinonez was a dedicated father of four, a devoted husband and a devout family man. >> right now everyone's just in shock. no one believes it. >> reporter: nitzia sauceda is the victim's niece. she says her uncle worked construction nearly a year. friday was the first time he reported to 1 martin street in daly city. abel and another man were working on a 24-inch concrete storm drain pipe for a new housing development friday morning when a 12-foot-deep trench gave way. abel didn't make it out, and work to recover his body went on for more than 12 hours. after combing through that dirt and debris rescue crews were finally able to locate and

recover abel's body. you can see the aftermath of that recovery effort in the trench in the distance. the site has been deemed dangerous. posted signs also warn any work is prohibited. for now cal osha's investigating the incident, and abel's family is planning for his funeral. s. >> the goal would be to hopefully get enough funds to send him to mexico so he could be buried next to his dad. since his dad passed away when he was young. he always wanted to be with his dad. >> reporter: a new heartbreaking reality for his young children, who instead of celebrating dad's 35th birthday wednesday are preparing to say good-bye. >> othe old cresest, she's 13. 5, 3, and 1. another woman has died at b.a.r.t., and right now we don't know why. b.a..t. police responded to the dublin pleasanton station at 5:30 this morning to reports of

an unresponsive female. a 26-year-old woman who was recently released from santa rita jail was declared dead at the scene. officials say the woman had a bump on her head but no other signs of foul play were found. last sunday 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death at the macarthur station. nearly 28,000 runners are signed up to run in tomorrow's san francisco marathon. barriers have been placed along the route. runners will begin at 5:30 in the morning at mission, and the embarcadero and end at folsom and the embarcadero. along the mark runners will dash along the golden gate bridge, golden gate park, and race across at&t park to the finish line. this map shows the areas that will be closed tomorrow morning. you'll want to leave plenty of time if you're driving around the city. and our drew tuma say runner, so he can tell you all about the running weather conditions tomorrow. >> you know, what eric, it's going to be nice for those runners. we'll have morning fog, a little bit of drizzle but by the afternoon once again away from the coast it will be a rather warm finish to the weekend.

live doppler 7 along with satellite tonight showing you we do have that fog, the marine layer rolling in from the coast and spilling into the bay at this hour. but i do want to take you north right now. we are tracking the carr fire, that large fire around redding. we continue to have a red flag warning in effect until monday morning 8:00 in the morning. wouldn't be surprised if this does get extended but the entire area shaded in red. each and every afternoon we can see winds gusting higher than 30 miles an hour. very hot conditions and very dry conditions with humidity less than 10%. back here at home right now still have a wide range in temperatures. 50s close to the coast and our warmer spots are still in the 60s and 70s. 64 still in san jose. 53, though, in santa rosa. down to 54 in san francisco and you brentwood still mild at 71 degrees. here's the call from accuweather over the next 12 hours. that fog right now is building along the coastline. it moves into the bay after midnight. patchy fog for oak 4r57d, san francisco, mid to low 50s in our coolest spots.

away from the coast there are some spots we'll hold in the low 60s over the next 12 hours. we'll take to you san francisco tomorrow morning for the marathon. early on we'll have that fog. a little bit of drizzle by 5:00 in the morning. but later on in the morning some peeks of sunshine by 9:00. temperatures in the mid 50s. and then by later morning hours near lunchtime we'll see that wind pick up. gusting near 20 miles per hour in the city. the 12-hour day planner on your sunday, have that cloud cover early on close to the coast. by the afternoon it's a lot of sunshine but a little bit of haze will be in our sky especially in the north bay and inland because of those fires to our north. so air quality will be moderate in some cities. you see it's cool on the coast in the 50s but around the bay we're in the 70s and 80s and inland we're going back into the 90s. so highs in a microclimate starting in the south bay tomorrow 84 for san jose but much warmer in morgan hill, high of 92. cupertino around 81 for sunday afternoon. along the peninsula pretty wide range. the coast is cool only in the mid 50s for half moon bay and pacifica but mountain view much

good evening. i'm eric thomas. dion lim is on assignment. northern california's being ravaged by major wildfires tonight. in napa county hundreds of residents remain evacuated from the berryessa highlands neighborhood after a fast-moving wildfire broke out this afternoon. eight homes were destroyed or damaged. the fire has burned at least 150 acres and is 10% contained. evacuation orders have expanded dramatically this evening in lake and mendocino counties because wildfires burning there, the mendocino complex fires have scorched 14,000 acres that have led to widespread evacuations, lakeport and upper lake have been advised to evacuate as fires threaten those communities. the most devastating fire,

the carr fire in redding, has exploded in size to nearly 84,000 acres. hundreds of homes have been destroyed or damaged. thousands more remain under threat. tonight, the death toll has jumped to five after a great grandmother and two children perished in the blaze. abc news reporter alex stone has the story. >> reporter: the fire so far unstoppable. flames racing hundreds of buildings gone. >> you cannot predict where this fire's going next. >> reporter: new evacuations being ordered as people living near the carr fire are told to "get out with your life." >> if you feel like you need to leave and nobody's told you, leave. there's a reason the hair on the back of your neck stands up sometimes. it means you should listen to that and go. >> reporter: over 3,000 firefighters are throwing everything they can at these fierce flames, working in triple-digit heat and tinder box conditions. the fire so massive its smoke can be seen from space. so paufl it's producing fire tornadoes of flame, ash, and

cases at the store. all the suspects are now in custody. nobody was hurt. the former archbishop of washington, d.c. has resigned from the college of cardinals over sexual abuse allegations. the vatican says pope francis accepted theodore mccarrick's resignation. pope francis also ordered him to conduct a life of prayer and penance until the accusations against him are examined in a catholic church trial. a man says mccarrick abused him beginning at the age of 11, and he says it continued for more than two decades. abc's new brand localish is sharing the inspiring stories of people who come together to build unexpected relationships. it's a weekly digital series called "more in common." this week the team visits two cities separated by the border wall and meets kids forming friendships over the divide. >> tennis court, we're separated with a net. at the end of the tennis game we have to greet the other person. the border should be our tennis

celebration. the event continues tomorrow. and you saw skies there were absolutely clear. that probably means temperatures were warm. i know they were where i was, drew. >> yeah. we see those temperatures well into the 80s where we have that sunshine. but tomorrow close to the coast you're going to be stuck in the chilly 50s. live look from our rooftop camera at kgo along the embarcadero in san francisco. you can see the gray skies overhead as the fog descends in from the coast. tonight we'll see 50s closer to the coast. some spots away from the coast will hold into the low 60s the next 12 hours. that'll get highs on our sunday afternoon into the 90s in our warmest spots using 93 for antioch, 91 for concord. 68, though, in oakland tomorrow afternoon. about 64 in san francisco. 84 in san jose. and the same for santa rosa. trying beat the heat close to the coast tomorrow it will be rather chilly with some clouds giving way for sun in the afternoon. a very high uv index. 59 that high in ocean beach. santa cruz up to 67. ocean water temperature is cool right now. sitting at about 56 degrees.
