good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn. thanks for joining us this sunday, july 29th. let's get a quick look at the weather with frances dinglasan. >> good morning, everyone. it's just what you would expect, we have the clouds at the coast filling in to parts of the bay, but the marine layer is a little bit more compressed today. that may allow some temperatures to warm up a being or two, compared to yesterday, a little

bit warmer. here is the 12-hour day planner. you can download this by searching the accuweather app. by 7:00, after sunrise, it's 6:10. temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. then the clouds pull back. cloudy beaches throughout the day, hot inland this afternoon, up to the mid-90s in spots around the bay, the warmest locations hit the upper 70s. at the coast, the sea breeze keeps things cool in the upper 50s to near 60. sunsets at 8:20. a beautiful evening ahead. a steady pattern with the accuweather seven day forecast with changes midweek. i'll tell you about that coming up. carolyn? >> thank you. developing news. cal fire est maits 300 fires are burning across california this morning. crews are focused on four fires right now, the carr fire, in and around redding. the river and ranch fires in lake county and the steele fire

in napa county. governor brown declared states of emergency in napa and lake counties. fires destroyed homes. this is video of what used to be houses near lake berry essa. the fire is 10% contained. abc 7 news reporter, carlos, spoke with evacuees. >> reporter: even as firefighters began making progress on the steele fire, the nature of the inferno is taking its toll. >> i have never seen it like this before. here we go again. >> reporter: evacuation orders are nothing new for stu williams. he stayed behind to protect his home, but part of the neighborhood is up in flames, upsetting to say the least. >> this is a small community. we know pretty much know one another. it's very devastating, very sad. >> reporter: a total of eight homes damaged or destroyed. the fire broke out around 4:30.

crews rushed to put out the flames, attacking from the ground and the air. >> we were able to get enough firefighters in here quickly to hold it to that number, even though one structure is too many. >> reporter: the residents forced to evacuate. >> just the pets, nothing else. didn't care about anything else. it was really close. i don't know if my house is there. >> reporter: the cost unknown, but the dry brush and heat helped fuel the conditions. >> we are accustomed to it. growing up, this is ha you get. >> boaters had to pack up and leave. >> it's a bummer. i feel sorry for the people who lost homes more than anything. growing wildfire chased rez dents in lake county out of their homes. the river fire and the ranch fire near ukiah started as separate wildfires and combined

to become the complex fires. 14,000 acres burned all together. new evacuation orders were issued yesterday. the lakeside hospital is in that evacuation zone. it had to be closed. they have been transported to other hospitals nearby. the red cross opened a new shelter at twin pine casino. look at this video from a community that is, right now, under an evacuation advisory. it shows the enormity of the fire, what firefighters are up against. we have updated evacuation information on our website, abc7news.com. let's check in now with our meteorologist, frances dinglasan. she is tracking the conditions on the fire lines. >> hey, carolyn. not a good time for firefighters. we have a lot of high pressure over the central part of the state. that's going to make conditions tough. right now, for the steele fire, the temperature has dropped but only to 62 degrees.

winds at about 6 miles per hour with gusts to 12 miles per hour. also, we are keeping track of the ranch fire and river fire. the winds are coming from the north, 7 miles per hour through the area. some of the smoke is drifting through parts of the north bay. we could see hazy skies once again today. in addition, through that area, a heat advisory today through tonight, until 8:00 p.m. we'll see triple digit heat once again in ukiah. that brings relative humidity down. for the carr fire and the redding area, a red flag warning in effect through tomorrow. in addition to the high heat and low relative humidity, gusts can reach 30 miles per hour making fires more easily spreadable. i'll have another update and keep you posted. carolyn? >> that is unfortunate. thank you, francis. a desperate situation in shasta county as the carr fire continues to burn out of control.

it's burned nearly 84,000 acres. it's more than twice the size of redding itself. more than 500 buildings have been destroyed. nearly 5,000 more threatened.'s. the death toll stands at five after a great grandmother and two children died in the fire. we have the latest. >> they found her with the children, from what i have been told and, you know, that shows she did everything she could until the very end. >> reporter: a close family friend of melanie and her two great grandchildren, james and emily, recall how much joy they brought to the world. >> james wanted to be his great granddaddy. it all happened so fast. >> reporter: thursday, before the flames reached the home, l melodies husband of nearly 30 years, ed, went out to buy

supplies for others whose homes were threatened. >> doing that, he lost everything on this planet he cared about. >> reporter: a nearby neighbor recalls how swift and strong the flames were, coming out of nowhere. >> our fear was we were going to get trapped. >> reporter: in the blink of an eye, too late. a gas line burst into flames and consumed the home. what remain now are memories and helping a widower get back on his feet. >> a lot of mourning is happening. he's a stoic man. he won't break in front of others. even now, he's trying to be that strong man to get everybody through it. >> the family has set up a gofundme campaign. it is the only verified one online. we have a link to it on our website, abc7news.com. there is a hot line to report missing people. it is 530-225-4277. so far, about a dozen people

have been reported missing or unaccounted for. the sheriff says anyone who evacuated, he's asking them to check in with friends and family. this morning, we are getting a closer look at the destruction around redding. the fire destroyed hundreds of homes. it's not just the flames causing the damage. abc 7 news reporter, laura anthony has more from redding. >> reporter: a couple blocks from where dozens of homes burned. we can show you a vivid illustration of what the winds did, more than 70 miles per hour took the trees down, toppled them, as the fire was raging a couple blocks away. in this case, this tree actually hit the house. it's an inferno that more than doubled in size, the kind that destroys nearly everything in its path. so far, the carr fire shows no signs of letting up. near iko, fire crews focus on

protecting lives and property like this home on a hill where the residents evacuated in northwest redding. it appears all but a few homes were destroyed, leaving a few remnants of life here, before the fire. near ono, the scramble to save animals continues, in this case, a horse named good boy. how grateful are you for the help here? >> very grateful. i want to stick around and see what is going to come out of it. >> i had a house fire in '97 and lost everything. i have been wanting to pay back. this is the way i'm able to pay back. >> we are out here doing our business. orteun tucker told us he helped zef anima and one man. >> i went into the neighborhood and every house was on fire. got him pulled out. protected him with a hose until an engine could come by. they took over from there. got his american flag and gave

this morning, hearing from the family of a man killed at a daly city construction site. a 34-year-old husband and father. amanda has the story. >> reporter: the death of a daly city construction worker is being felt beyond the job site. family members say he was a dedicated father of four, a devoted husband and devout family man. >> right now, everyone is in shock. no one believes it. >> reporter: this is the victim's niece. she says her uncle worked construction for nearly a year. friday was the first time he reported to martin street in daly city. they were working on a 24-inch concrete storm drainpipe for a housing development when a a w

hours. after combing through that dirt and debris, rescue crews were finally able to locate the body. you can see the aftermath of it in the trench in the distance. the site is deemed dangerous, posted signs warn any work is prohibited. for now, cal osha is investigating the incident and the family planning for the funeral. >> the goal would be to hopefully get enough funds to send him to mexico so he could be buried next to his dad. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: a heart breaking reality for his young children, who, instead of celebrating dad's 35th birthday are preparing to say good buy. >> the oldest, she's 13, 5, 3 and 1.

>> reporter: in daly city, abc 7 news.8,0 runners are hitting the streets of san francisco this morning. the 41st annual san francisco marathon kicked off about 45 minutes ago. this is video showing barriers going up along the route yesterday. runners started at mission street and the embarcadero at 5:30. the race ends at fulton and the embarcadero. this map shows where the runners are going. they dash across the golden gate bridge, golden gate park and race past at&t park. back out live, we are showing you a fog socked golden gate bridge, which is where those runners will cross. there are lots of street closure that is are in effect today in san francisco. so, give yourself plenty of time, if you have somewhere to be in the city this morning.

good morning, everyone. i'm meteorologist, frances dinglasan. i want to show you the golden gate bridge camera as well. we are seeing a few marathon runner that is already made it here and also seeing the fog, low clouds and some drizzle this morning. temperatures right now are in the 50s and 60s. cool in san francisco. 52 degrees. o oakland, 56. san jose, 62 degrees. we are almost exactly where we were 24 hours ago and mid-50s through morgan hill and half-moon bay. here is how the day plays out. if you are trying to view the runners through san francisco today, grab a jacket. it's going to be cloudy, foggy and drizzle. the next few hours will stay in the low 50s, climbing up to the mid-50s. by midday, we see a little more break in cloud cover and sunshine. the afternoon gusts pick up to 10-20 miles per hour. that will keep things cool, especially if you are closer to the coast. here is a live shot from the

east bay hills camera. the low clouds cascading over the hills and the mountains and will pull back to the coast. santa rosa, 51. navato has cool this morning, now at 46 degrees. back to 63. concord, 59. livermore, 55. i'm showing you live doppler 7. we have the low clouds, once again. the marine layer is more compressed. some neighborhoods might warm up more compared to yesterday. overall, we are right where we should be. more clearing in parts of the north bay. here is how it plays out in the next few hours. we'll start to clear and also noticing high clouds passing through later on this afternoon and this evening. those high clouds are coming from the south. th aa bringing some the high clouds up toward san francisco but it's not having too much of an effect on our

temperatures. really, the temperatures at the coast the sea breeze and marine layer. half-moon bay, 73 degrees. the high clouds coming from the south and temperatures in the warmest areas will be low to mid-90s like concord at 92, san jose, 84 degrees. now, up to the north, hazy conditions due to the smoke coming from the mendocino county area and the steele fires. the temperatures there will be very warm. if you are headed to the gilroy garlic festival, you will need sunscreen. stay cool. things are going to be sunny throughout the morning hours and it will be getting hot this afternoon, up to 95 degrees. even by 7:00 tonight, only dropping down to 77 degrees. of course, we have been tracking the carr fire and there's a red flag warning through this area in redding. gusty winds up to 30 miles per hour, high temperatures, low humidity. not great news, again. it's going to stay that way

through most of the week in terms of temperatures. heat advisory through ukiah where we will see triple digit heat. the accuweather seven day forecast, for us in the bay area, morning fog, afternoon sunshine, a wide range of temperatures, which means upper 50s at the coast to mid-90s inland. we are going to stay that way the next few days. there's a minor change on wednesday where we'll see cooler temperatures inland as high pressure weakens. thursday is the coolest day and we are back to the steady summertime pattern. >> all right. i think they are going to talk about the wildfires on good morning america. dan harris is joining us now from new york to tell us what's coming up at 7:00 on good morning america. >> hey, good morning. coming up on gma, the raging fires growing in size and creating more death and destruction of two young children among the most recent tragedies as the heat shows no signs of relenting.

over the next hour. by lunchtime, the clouds pull back. cloudy at the beaches and hot inland this afternoon. inland temperatures hitting the mid-90s in a few spots around the bay. we'll see lots of 70s in the warmest locations and at the coast as the sea breeze and marine layer keep it there. high clouds moving in. sunsets at 8:20. i'll let you know what changes you can expect in the workweek coming up. carolyn? >> thank you, francis. cal fire estimated more than 300 fires burning across the state this morning. crews in northern california are focused on four right now. those are the carr fire in redding, the river and ranch fires in lake county and the steele fire in napa county. governor brown declared states of emergency in mendocino, napa and lake counties. fires there have destroyed homes. in napa county, hundreds of

residents are evacuated from the beyea nrhd. eight homes have been destroyed or damaged. the fire burned at least 150 acres and is 10% contained. evacuation orders expanded in lake and mand sendocino fires bg there. they are scorched 14,000 acres and led to widespread evacuations. residents in lake port and upper lake have been advised to evacuate as fire threatens those communities. the most devastating fire, the carr fire in redding exploded in size. it's burned nearly 84,000 acres and shows no signs of slowing down. abcs alex stone has the latest. >> reporter: the fire, so far, unstoppable. flames racing hundreds of buildings gone. >> you cannot predict where this

fire is going next. >> reporter: new evacuation orders as people living near the carr fire are cold to get out with your life. >> if you feel like you need to leave, leave. there's a reason the hair on the back of your neck stands up sometimes. listen to that and go. >> reporter: over 3,000 firefighters are throwing everything they can at the flames, working in triple digit heat and tinderbox conditions. the fire so massive smoke can be seen from space, so powerful, it is producing fire tornadoes of flame, ash and combustible gas. over 80,000 acres burned over 500 buildings destroyed. nearly 5,000 more threatened. 38,000 people forced to flee their homes. >> i had literally everything that i can think of that's valuable and shoved it in my car as fast as possible. >> reporter: the fire, deadly, killing two firefighters and now a family says a great grandmother and two children have been killed. at least a dozen people are missing.

at a community meeting, a promise for residents who are worried about their homes. >> we are doing everything we can to get those areas secure and safe to get you back into your homes and area so that you can make an assessment of the damages. >> reporter: alex stone, abc news, redding, california. >> unfortunately, redding is not going to get any relief from the triple digit weather anytime soon. temperatures there expected to reach 100 degrees each of the next seven days. redding has faced those conditions for the past two weeks. this, unfortunately, has created near ideal conditions for fires to thrive. the carr fire is hitting close to home for us here at abc 7. we have staff members that are redding natives as well as our former executive producer, kerry. kerry has been posting a lot of videos to facebook of what she has been seeing. >> this whole subdivision is

gone. i think i have seen a couple houses at the entrance. the second entrance at land park off buena. a couple houses there were good. everything, once you get inside and turn on ferrington, it looks like it is gone. here is a house in front of us. again, fire with no -- the question, i think everyone has is why certain homes get hit and some manage to stay standing. in a second, i'm going to come up on one that is still standing. other than that, the neighborhood is gone. this is just heart breaking. >> yes, it is. many bay area firefighters are on the front lines in alameda county firefighters shared this video. it illustrates how extreme the conditions are in redding and the danger that the crews are

facing. police say looters are now targeting evacuated neighborhoods in redding. several incidents are being reported every day. >> going through the neighborhoods, around the roadblocks, shouldering doors, getting into residents that haven't been burnt. so, they are looking to steal items from the residents. >> the police chief says they have identified several suspects, but haven't made any arrests. patrols are being increased in the neighborhoods specifically looking for those looters. california's attorney general is warning of price gouging for gas and housing during these times of emergency. people who lost everything in last year's devastating wine country fires are hoping to pay it forward. volunteers are collecting donations for animals and their owners near redding. abc 7 news reporter,

bernard has the details. >> we feel their pain, we it's like to run from fire. she nearly lost her prize horses moose and boomer when wildfires destroyed their stable and her riding school. >> time to pay it forward. so many people came out and helped me during the fire. >> reporter: they want to help evacuees and their animals of the carr fire, collecting donations of food to send up north. >> horses, dogs, cats, cows, chickens, goats, whatever, they need to eat. >> reporter: she put out word for help and making pleas in person. >> anything you can think of someone would need. >> reporter: the old barn feed store stepping up with donations of pay. the manager helped fire victims last year and can do it again. >> been in this business. i know a lot of wonderful people that are always happy to help. >> my inbox is flooded.

foot giant slide. hundreds are going to attempt to set the guinness world record for the longest chain of roller skaters. the current record is 371 skaters. it starts at noon at hunter's shoreline park. the final day to check out the art and soul festival in oakland. it includes live music, artists selling jewelry and paintings. it's open from noon to 6:00 today. the annual kite festival continues in berkeley today. you can buy a kite or make one and learn how to fly it. it runs from 10:00 to 6:00 at cesar chavez park at berkeley marina. >> lots going on today, francis. >> we have all kinds of weather as well. cloudy and cool at the coast. a live shot in san francisco where we see the gray skies and plenty of sunshine for everyone this afternoon, except at the beaches. i'll have the neighborhood temperature high coming up.

half-moon bay -- it's going to be comfortable in oakland, 73 degrees and san jose, 84 degrees. high clouds coming in from the south and we'll start to see that this afternoon and this evening. but, in the north bay, we have hazy conditions due to those fires. ukiah and lake port hot in the triple digits. it's going to be hot if you are headed to the gilroy garlic festival. temperatures climb to the mid-90s this afternoon with the high clouds passing through. it's going to be mild at 7:00, in the upper 70s. of course, a red flag warning in effect through the redding area for the carr fire, well over 100 degrees today, low humidity guests up to 30 miles per hour. this red flag warning continues until tomorrow morning. in addition to that, we have high pressure over the state. that's really warming up temperatures for the inland areas and a heat advisory in effect through ukiah.
