30,000 acres and are 10% contained. they formed one fire with new flames threatening communities all around clear lake. one of many for firefighters across the state. crews are making progress on the car fire. we have live team coverage tonight. our reporters are spread out across the fire line. first, let's get to abc 7 news lli lillian kim. >> reporter: there is still a glow coming from the hills behind us. that's just over highway 29. >> the flames are getting closer to clear lake and many of the towns alongside it are under mandatory evacuation.

burning throughout california, concern is growing about resources being spread too thin, in which case kim has a plan. >> if worse comes to worse, we can run down and jump in the lake. >> six structures are been destroyed so far. live, lilian kim. >> thank you very much. this map shows all the evacuation orders. there are a lot of them. anything in red, that area is under mandatory evacuation. if you are in a shade of yellow, that's an advisory order and those people need to be ready to leave in a fire notice. the ranch fire and the river fire, which is rapidly moving. we're constantly updating our website. and the weather, of course, is a big reason for all these evacuations as the fires rapidly move to the south and east.

our moeteorologist is tracking the heat. >> certainly a big issue. the winds are active even at this late hour. take a look at the map right now. the winds are gusting to 23 miles an hour right now, near the river fire. and at times that wind direction has blown smoke and it has blown flames towards lakemore. track the wind gusts by 5:00 or 6:00 tomorrow evening, we anticipate that wind to be 10 to 20 miles out of the north or out of the west. good news in the coming days. it will certainly be hot tomorrow, but as you go into thursday and friday in the upcoming weekend, we will chop off about ten degrees. take a look at how warm we get

tomorrow afternoon. >> all right, drew. thank you very much. the death toll from the car fire rose to six today. the fire is still growing, but mostly in remote areas. 600 structures have been destroyed. officials today announced parts of redding that were evacuated will soon be repopulated. several people have been arrested for looting and trespassing. the fire has burned 149 square miles. that's three times the size of san francisco. it is 17% contained. tonight the man who lost his wife and two great grandchildren in the car fire gave his heart wrenching account or trying to save the three as the fire spread through their home. ed's wife and their two great grandchildren died thursday night. >> i talked to jr. on the phone. he just kept saying, grandpa, he said, come get me. he said come get me. the fire is coming in the

this community, they believe that relief is nowhere in sight. the inferno claimed its sixth victim. while authorities wait for family to be notified, we know it was a man who refused to leave. >> when they choose to stay behind, they are not only placing themselves and their families in danger, they are placing firefighters and energy personnel in danger. >> friends and family of a great grandmother and two great grandchildren that died in a fire are angry. >> i feel like the evacuation could have been handled far better. there could have been a much more cautious route taken. >> we are looking into if there was notificatios made there. however, it is important that if there is a fire danger and people are aware of the fire danger, they can evacuate at any time they wish. they do not have to wait for an

an area decimated by the car fire. this lake used to be filled with boats. now it is reminiscent of a scene out of a horror movie. >> reporter: at whisky town lake, the car fire burned right to the water's edge, even destroying dozens of boats as they sat on the water. new just a blur beneath the water's surface. >> they have to let everybody in. >> reporter: but the people that live here are resilient. >> i am just kind of hanging out waiting for the power to come on. i had a bunch of food in my refrigerator and freezer and i didn't want to lose it. so i had a generator and more or less took this opportunity to try to keep everything going. >> reporter: this neighbor has been here since the fire started. >> what's that been like? >> not fun. there is no power so there is no power, no air-conditioning, no fans, no nothing. >> reporter: why didn't you leave? >> because i want to make sure

this house stays here. >> abc 7 news. late this afternoon, the national park service reported another firefighter has died. he has been identified at 33-year-old brian hughes. hughes was captain of the arrowhead interagency hot shots. he was originally from hawaii. a tree fell on to him this morning while engaging in a tactical operation. full containment is not expected until august 15th. it is expected to reopen on friday sgrrchlgts friday. in napa county, people are returning to see the devastation tonight. many are coming back just to find their homes in ashes. abc 7 news. >> i don't know who is going to rebuild, who is going to stay. >> reporter: the home they have lived in for 16 years was destroyed by the steel fire.

neighborhood. >> there is a beam underneath the house that caught on fire and it's red tagged. so i have nowhere to go. and i'm just going to to my best. >> reporter: folks here have lived through other wild fire scares before, but never thought one would that i think their lives forever. >> everybody's been 100% prepared for this. it happened so fast. >> reporter: we have heard that a lot, just how fast this fire happened. i was struck my things which survived like this family's boat, a little bit plastic, but virtually untouched. the good news is there was no injuries here. the smoke from the fires in northern california is drifting to the east and we mean to other states. the national weather service says it is not just going to nevada but utah as is expected to intensify tomorrow. remember, download the abc 7

tonight police took on the community in basketball. abc 7 news kate harrison has our story. >> reporter: oakland pd ditched their gun belts and badges in favor of something a little more breathable for a game of hoops against town business in a first ever building bridges basketball game. >> i started this process to bridge the gap between the community and police. >> reporter: he spent the past year organizing the game and put together a group of kids, young men and women to represent oakland. >> this is a reintroduction to the community with the lice >>epte it wa week for oakland. there was a stabbing and the demonstrations that follows and concern that a white supremacist group was coming to town, which is why this basketball event was

install the suicide net. drivers will not be able to see the construction when they cross the bridge. the suicide barrier project is expected to be done in january of 2021. an iconic bay area music and movie studio is closing. on 10th street in berkeley. the studio will close in mid-september. carlos santana recorded his grammy album there. green day and jrecorded there as well. fantasy studios also reduced one flew over the nest and the english patient. runners woke up very early for the 41st annual san francisco marathon. the race started at 5:30 this morning. the men's winner was a 40-year-old from mil valley. he picked up his son just before he crossed the finish line.

bonny tran from san francisco was the woman's winner. there was a half marathon and 5k and some handsome runners there. martin ortiz there on the left, chris win and meteorologist drew, who seems no worse for wear for running 13.1 miles this morning. >> yeah. we were up early. it was a great race and the weather was perfect. it was cool. it was cloudy. >> i'm sure it was an easy run up those hills. >> by mile eight, we all looked at each other like, oh, boy. okay. we have a nice week ahead in terms of temperature. we will see cooler air finally move in midweek after being in the 90s for several days. tonight, though, live doppler 7 along with satellite showing we have high clouds streaming in from time to time. so clouds mixing with stars out there. i do want to give you an update towards the car fire. we have this red flag warning in

effect. the entire area is shaded in red. that red flag warning meeting not only hot temperatures but gusts 25 miles an hour or higher. right now this will expire tomorrow morning at 8:00 in the morning, but i would not be surprised if this does not get extended in the coming days. the temperatures will be over the century mark the next couple of days in the afternoon. tonight a live look. we are soft with fog along the coast and tomorrow morning we'll see plots of drizzle close to the coast first thing in the morning. it is breezy out there. generally 5 to 15 miles an hour. a little bit stronger through there right now. we do anticipate these winds to be with us tomorrow afternoon as well. gusty anywhere from 15 to perhaps 25 miles an hour. tonight, though, that wind coming up that cool ocean water is keeping the coast rather chilly. in the 50s right now. 55 for half-moon bay in san francisco. we still have some warmth.

the road. investigators say it appears the driver was headed north and had trouble with the curve that caused him to cross over the roadway and plunge off the cliff. >> a masked man in a car and police. take a look at this video. the suspect is behind the wheel of a toyota spider that appears to be splashed with paint. police tried to stop the driver, but he managed to escape. you can see the black cloth covering his head. the license plate on the car came back as stolen. the driver and vehicle were last seen in martinez. >> it's going to be 24 hours before we know if a man who recently returned to the u.s. has ebola. he was taken this morning to a hospital in denver and so far there are no indications he has the deadly disease. based on where he was in africa, the hospital is taking no chances and has put him in a special unit.
