making news in america this morning -- the wildfire emergency expanding in california. the death toll rising. another firefighter losing his life as hundreds of additional buildings are destroyed. >> i have never seen a fire with such destruction here in this area ever before. >> this morning, just how big the most dangerous fire is. and the firefighter's wife who escaped with their children in the middle of the night. the new threat from president trump to shut down the government. what he's now demanding. plus, will the president get another supreme court pick? ruth bader ginsburg gives a major clue on when she plans to retire. the secret government program tracking u.s. citizens when they fly, even those not suspected of a crime and not on a watch list. the tsa explains the so-called

"quiet skies" program. also, the young man from texas who finished in last place at the tour de france, but inspired millions. plus, the homeless man giving out his resume on the road side instead of asking for money. this morning, the overwhelming response. and what you need to know if your child is a fussy eater. the new research on what not to do. and we do say good morning, everyone. >> i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm romina puga, filling in for diane macedo. we begin with the breaking news overnight from the wildfire emergency on the west coast. the death toll now rising with another firefighter losing his life. >> also overnight, a dramatic increase in the number of homes lost around redding, california, where more than 38,000 people have now been forced to flee their homes. with new flames igniting and little relief in sight, the carr

fire near redding, california, is now spreading in every direction. the death toll rising overnight. among the victims, melody bledsoe and two of her great-grandchildren. relatives say her body was found draped over the children. in a final effort to save them. several other people are missing. and nearly 100,000 acres have burned. that's about the size of philadelphia. at this hour, more than 600 homes have been destroyed. these photos showing the before and the grim after of one of those houses. jerry case returned to his childhood home, finding what's left of his mother's wedding ring and little else. >> so a lot of memories. >> yeah, yeah. yeah, old pictures. everything. it's gone. >> reporter: more than 3,000 firefighters are on the front lines, even as some have lost everything themselves. >> that was a firefighter's house right there? >> yes. a lot of firefighters lost their houses here. >> reporter: one of those firefighters is jason campbell. his wife and children escaped their home in the middle of the night, just moments before it burned down. >> when we left, the electricity had already gone out.

and so then it's just so dark. there's so much smoke. all you could see was red. it was hot wind with ash and leaves. and it just looked like it was right there. >> reporter: across the west, firefighters are up against 59 wildfires in 11 states. including one that scorched more than 50,000 acres. near yosemite national park. two firefighters were killed battling that blaze, including captain brian hughes, who was struck by a falling tree while removing brush. the fire is only 17% contained. the smoke has drifted as far away as utah. we'll check the weather in a few moments. we turn to washington. where president trump is threatening to shut down the government unless he gets funding for his border wall. that shutdown would come just before the midterm elections. republicans are already pushing back. stephanie ramos has more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, romina, good morning. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and house speaker paul ryan may not appreciate the

president's latest tweet. about a possible government shutdown, especially since they all met last week to talk about government funding. president trump is again threatening to shut down the government over immigration. >> we're going to build a wall. it's going to be a great wall. >> reporter: tweeting over the weekend, i would be willing to shut down government if the democrats don't give us the votes for border security, which includes the wall. just last week, house speaker paul ryan and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell met with the president at the white house to talk about government funding before that september 30th deadline. >> leader mcconnell and i, like we always do, had a very productive meeting. >> reporter: both the house and senate are working to secure the $5 billion the president has asked for border security. however, it's unlikely senate democrats will back that request in time. >> we have gotten some wall funding already under way. that is being funded. but, i think it's not a question of if. it's a question of when. >> reporter: when president

trump signed the $1.3 trillion spending bill last march to keep the government open, he told congress he wouldn't do that again. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he likely won't have to. >> under both parties for a long time, we haven't passed the 12 annual bills that fund the government. so we end up at the end of the fiscal year with a great big omnibus bill. this year, we had good bipartisan cooperation. >> reporter: this presidential threat to shut down the government comes just about 100 days from the midterm elections. where shutting down the government of money for his wall could hurt republicans in their races. >> i don't think it would be helpful. so let's try to avoid it. >> reporter: sources tell abc news some lawmakers were shocked and confuse bid the president's tweet about the shutdown since it was agreed that a vote on wall money would be delayed until after the november midterms. romina and kendis, back to you.

>> stephanie ramos, thank you. the board of directors at cbs will meet today after a bombshell report on sexual misconduct allegations against the company's ceo, les moonves. "the wall street journal" reports the board will appoint a special committee to oversee the investigation. and discus whether moonves should step aside. moonves is one of the most popular and powerful executives in the tv industry. six women told "the new yorker" magazine that he retaliated when they rebuffed their advances. one spoke to npr. >> he said, no, just you and me. and that kind of floored me. i'm not sure what i said in response. he said, look, you're really expensive. and i need to know you're worth it. so to say that he's not responsible for damaging anybody's career, if you're not getting employed because you've rebuffed somebody, that's -- that's damage. >> the allegations extend beyond just moonves himself. investigators will look into claims that there is a culture

of misconduct at the entire cbs corporation. newly released body cam video shedding light on the deadly shooting of a black man by white officers. minneapolis police responding to a 911 call about a man firing a gun when they met up with thurman blevins. who took off running. after chasing him for less than a minute, they shot him. the video appears to show a gun in his hands. >> regardless of the circumstances and facts that took place on the afternoon of june 23rd and regardless of how our own life experiences and backgrounds inform the conclusions we draw. let us all recognize one conclusion. a life was lost. and that in and of itself is a tragedy. >> blevins' family says he did nothing wrong. and they say at the very least, the officers were too dwoik pull their triggers. now to a rare sight over one

dating apps to lure intercept victims. he's accused of killing a young nurse in new york. he was arrested in los angeles and charged with the attempted murder of a woman he allegedly held hostage. police say he claims to have been involved in seven murders. new details in the search for missing iowa college student mollie tibbetts. investigators said there is computer evidence showing she did homework before she went missing. she was last seen jogging in her hometown nearly two weeks ago. she was dog sitting at her boyfriend's house. it is unclear when she returned from her run. a $2,000 reward is being offered for information in the case. the 85-year-old justice ruth bader ginsburg says she expects to be on the supreme court for at least another five years. she made that commitment and comment after attending a play about her late friend and former justice antonin scalia. ginsburg has successfully battled cancer and other ailments during her near 25 years on the bench. parents of picky eaters have been worrying in vain.

for inflation. we're learning more about a previously secret program at the tsa that tracks american citizens who travel, even if they're not on a watch list or suspected of a crime. >> the controversial program is raising a firestorm of questions. the tsa is responding. defending the program and clarifying its purpose. this morning, a report in "the boston globe" about a tsa program where passengers are secretly being watched and followed on the plane and in the airport without even knowing. the program is called "quiet skies" and specifically targets u.s. citizens not in the terror database or suspected of wrong doing. >> the criteria they're applying does not point to potential terrorists. >> reporter: under the program, thousands of unsuspecting americans have been watched by armed, undercover air marshals. the marshals taking notes on what certain passengers do, who they talk to, even if they use the bathroom. some of the behaviors they watch closely for include excessive

fidgeting or sweating. using the computer. a jump in h their adam's apple. a cold, penetrating stare. or if they boarded last. the air marshal association president is wary, releasing this statement to "the globe." -- the air marshama believes that missions based on recognized intelligence or in support of ongoing federal investigations is the proper criteria for flight scheduling. currently, the quiet skies program does not meet the criteria we find responsible. the tsa says it follows individuals who may have suspicious, erratic travel patterns. and deny that this is a surveillance program. the agency points out it does not take race or religion into account. a jilted husband in north carolina has been awarded millions of dollars thanks to an obscure law in that state. video shows keith king trying to communicate with his wife, who was vn an affair with francisco huizar. he's the man seen restraining king. and then king filed a civil complaint against huizar under north carolina's so called

"alienation of affection" law. it's designed to protect those whose happy marriage may be destroyed by a defendant's actions. a judge ordered huizar to pay king nearly $9 million. >> i felt like we were a perfect pair. we were a team. what i've endured, i have compared it to, like, a nuclear bomb going on around my surroundings. >> king's wife argued their marriage had always been troubled. huizar plans to appeal the ruling. five other states have similar laws. turning to sports, lebron james says heading to los angeles to play for the lakers is a dream come true. he made his first public comments about saying good-bye to his home state again. he says he has mixed emotions about saying good-bye to the cleveland cavaliers. but he's looking forward to playing for one of the iconic teams in sports. >> growing up, i was a cowboys fan. a bulls fan. a yankees fan. i have always felt like that was like one of the historic franchises. you look at the lakers. being able to play for a historic franchise.

inland valleys. around 80 at 7:00. a look at all the fire weather that prompted, wow, all those things over the weekend. what a busy time it was. >> yeah. let's take a look at the roads now. in clover dale, a sig alert this morning on southbound 101 past clover dale boulevard. solo vehicle crash, fatality, debris across the lanes that happened around 2:15 this morning. no estimate on when the southbound side of traffic will be reopened. other than that we are pretty quiet although we did see a lot of flashing lights on the lower deck of the bay bridge. eastbound 80. looks like it may have been a police chase. next update in a few minutes. a woman under arrest after this chase on 280. this portia led officer from hillsborough to san jose. above 140 miles an hour at some points. california patrol officers tried

to pull the car over near black mountain road when the driver took off. the chase went on more than 30 miles. san jose police put out spike strips. the woman eventually surrendered near the winchester off ramp. the car had no license plates. and developing this morning, thousands out of their homes as wildfire continue to burn in northern california. the biggest fire is the carr fire in redding. at least six people including two firefighters have died. more than 800 buildings have been destroyed. closer to us, two fires, the ranch and river fires, combined over the weekend. cal fire is calling it the mendocino complex fire. abc 7 news reporter aimmy hollywoodfield joins us with more. the fire is closing in on clear lake and many towns around the lake are under mandatory evacuation. the main street in lake port is

empty. there's ash falling all over the town. the twin pine casino in middletown serving as an evacuation center. >> i've been in a flood before but never been in a fire, and so am i going to go home to a bunch of ashes or am i going to go home to my house. >> we're here and it's just take a deep breath, you know. one of those, you don't realize how upsetting it is until you are in the middle of it. >> look at the lake, it is very quiet. no signs of the typical summer activity going on there. look at the air quality. it does not look good. we expect an update on this fire from officials later this morning. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> lakeport police patrolling areas trying to keep homes safe. >> this morning, this man is behind bars. officer arrested 35-year-old sean moreyson in an evacuation area in lake port. police say they found him looking into
