find out about the commute. >> good morning. i want to head back up to our one and only blocking issue we've had today, a sig alert in the cloverdale area. southbound 101 south of cloverdale, we do still have all lanes closed due to a fatal crash around 11:30 last night. however, chp saying they're getting close to having this clear in about ten more minutes. we'll pass that along as soon as we get official word. the richard/san rafael bridge on the eastbound side of 580, someone lost a couch in the sanquineton area, looks like that has cleared and we're nice too. new video from the air of the carr fire burning in and around redding. this was shot thursday night and see the fire ripping through our neighborhood. erratic winds led to the fire growing out of control. the death toll and homes destroyed continues to increase. abc 7 news reporter dion lim has been in redding since friday and joins us live this morning. good morning, dion. >> alexis and reggie, good morning to you.

now as the sun begins to rise here in redding, you can see just how widespread the damage is. taking out much of this neighborhood about 15 minutes northwest of downtown. we're seeing an awful lot of trees just toppled to the ground from the high winds. now the latest numbers from cal fire show the fire spreading to 95,000 acres, but containment this is the good news, has more than tripled from over the weekend. it is at 17%. now some of the most eerie pictures come the marina at whiskey town lake. you can see dozens of burned out boats bobbing in the water in various stages of sinking. one of the most badly damaged areas the merry lake subdivision. we met many people trying to return home to salvage whatever they can. but police are still concerned about hot spots and live gas lines. many homeowners were turned away. >> we're anxious to home. my children and cats are in lake california and we've been staying in an rv part. we didn't have anybody that could take all of us.

>> reporter: now out of the devastation stories of resilience. we learned about a sheriff's deputy who lost his home early thursday, but has continued to despite all of this to serve his community, helping with the evacuations. we should it on out a sixth person has lost his life. authorities tell me he did because he refused to leave his home, which was evacuated. all the more reason why to evacuate even before you get that warning. in redding, dion lim, abc 7 news. >> thank you. now look at this image. a 14-foot albino python among the many missing pets after the carr fire. it belongs to the shop redding reptiles the owner said it escaped its enclosure. 200 reptiles are at the owner's friend's house while evacuations remain in plac cal fire is combining two fires and they are calling it the mendocino complex fire. the ranch and river fires have

burned a combined 30,500 acres which is 10% containment. more than 10,000 structures are threatened and six homes destroyed. more mandatory evacuations were issued last night. shelters have opened up. many are gathering at twin pine casino in middletown. we posted the latest evacuation information and details on the mendocino complex at abc7news.com and on our abc 7 news autopsy. >> -- app. >> not a lot of positive news except from napa fire where the steele fire near lake berryessa is 65% contained after burning 150 acres and eight structures. the fire on saturday forced the evacuation of the berryessa highlands residential community and nearby pleasure cove resort. of course just beche iresoesn't mean people aren't losing things. this woman lost her home. she tried to do everything right.

that's taking place all across the nation at the airports? the quiet skies program specifically targets u.s. citizens not in the terrorist screening database or suspected of wrong doing according to the tsa. as first revealed to the "boston globe" thousands of unsuspecting americans have been watched by armed, undercover air marshals. they take notes on what passengers do, who they talk to, even if they use the bathroom. >> we're seeing examples of the tsa following around people who are in no way significantly suspect. the criteria that they are applying does not point to people who are potential terrorists. >> reporter: the tsa tells abc 7 news they follow individuals who may have erratic travel patterns and not a surveillance program, it does not take race or religion into account. the air marshal association president released this statement to the globe, saying the air marshal association believes that missions based on recognized intelligence or in support of ongoing federal investigations is the proper

could be a serial killer linked to as many as seven murders. 27-year-old daniel drayton was arrested at a los angeles hotel last week. that's where police say he was found with a woman who had been tied up and sexually assaulted. he was wanted in new york where investigators say he used the dating app tinder to prey on his victims. >> the common denominator in the cases one being a murder and one being a rape, is dating websites. >> two independent investigation as they progressed led our detectives to one in the same individual, that individual was tracked across the country. >> police say there could potentially be more victims out there. he faces several charges in new york and l.a. he's being held on more than $1 million bail. happening today the board of cbs is meeting and members will discuss the sexual misconduct charges leveled against chairman and ceo les moonves. six have come forward so far accusing him of decades of

sexual misconduct. it's detailed in "new yorker" magazine. actress and writer illeana douglas said how he kissed her and couldn't get lim off of her. a public school in san francisco could soon be shelter to 20 families who don't have a permanent home. the board of supervisors will take a vote tomorrow to approve the program in the mission. last week the board approved about $700,000 in funding for one year. the principal and vice principal created a plan to provide temporary housing for families in the school gym. the examiner reports the next step is to find a non-profit to staff the program. >> security justice ruth bader ginsburg hopes to stay on five more years. that means she would be leaving years old. she's hired law clerks for at least two more years. shopping on-line after

the air quality will only get worse, unfortunately. thanks, mike. >> another person has driven off a cliff in big sur and this time the driver died. six miles south of where an oregon woman went offer. the victim is a 39-year-old man and the coroner's office is working to identify him. investigators say it appears the driver was headed north and had trouble with a curve and caused him to crossover the roadway and plunge off the cliff. >> the rail between san francisco and los angeles may not attain the speed it's legally mandated to reach. it's supposed to get passengers to l.a. in 2 hours and 40 minutes. simulations show it's 3 minutes 10 seconds under the threshold. the rail authority has slowed long stretches of the track but it can still meet its trip time commitments. next at 6:30, a group of local moms are going on a three-day hunger strike today. >> a deadly shooting at an

social activism. he served in congress from 1971 until the late '90s and one of the firsts to call for the integration of gays and lesbians into the military. he served as mayor of oakland from 2007 to 2011. ron dellums was 82 years old and updates on this story throughout the day and on the abc 7 news app and here on abc 7 news. thousands are out of their homes as wildfires continue to burn in northern california this morning. the biggest is the carr fire in redding. it has burned 95,000 acres, at least six people including two firefighters have died, and more than 800 buildings have been destroyed. >> closer to us, two fires the ranch and river fires combined over the weekend. cal fire is calling it the mendocino complex fire. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield tracking the situation live in the newsroom for us. >> the fire is 10% contained, burned 30,500 acres.

the fire is closing in on clearlake. many towns around the lake are under mandatory evacuation. lakeport's main street is empty with ash falling all over the town. the twin pine casino in middletown is serving as an evacuation center. >> i've been in a flood before but never been the a fire. so it's -- am i going to go home to a bunch of ashes or go home to my house? >> we're here and it's just, take a deep breath, you know. it's one of those. you don't realize how upsetting it is until you are in the middle of it. >> the lake is very quiet right now. look at that. no signs of any typical summer activity and look at that air quality. it just does not look good. we expect an update on the fire from officials this morning. what's amazing as i'm watching for updates on the fire i'm looking at the other fires cal fire is working right now and having to update. they are very busy right now. live in the newsroom, amy hollyfield.

>> hopefully we will see increased number of containment this morning. lakeport police are patrolling the areas trying to keep homes safe and this morning this man is behind bars. officers arrested 35-year-old morrison in an evacuation area lakeport police say they found him looking into windows of evacuated homes. officers say he told them he was picking things up from a family member's house but officers say he did not live there. we know the identity of the firefighter who died battling the ferguson fire. >> 33-year-old brian hughes, a capital of the arrowhead interagency hot shots originally from hawaii. a tree fell on him yesterday morning engaging in a tactical operation. this month a bulldozer operator died in the fire. some new photos from east of yosemite. you can see how poor the air quality is and in some places you can only see a half mile ahead. full containment is not expected until august 15th. yosemite is expected to reopen

victims, one pronounced dead at the scene. friends drove a third person to the hospital. the investigation still early on and so far no word on what led up to the shootings. happening today, a group of bay area mothers will hold a three-day hunger strike in oakland to demand justice for migrant families. moms rising is calling for children to be reunited with their family. the government was under a thursday deadline to reunify more than 2500 children separated from their parents and more than 1800 have been reunited but hun drez remain apart. the strike starts at 8:00 outside the oakland federal building. president trump is threatening to shut down the government over immigration. in a tweet he says, i would be willing to shut down the government if the democrats do not give us the votes for border security which includes the wall. the chairman of the republican congressional campaign committee says congress would keep the government open. with less than 100 days from the midterm elections, congress is for border security in the next funding bill. they need to lock in the votes

before the money runs out september 30th. after a violent week in oakland a game of hoops between police and community members presented an opportunity to build bridges and come together. abc 7 news was at jam town on fourth avenue in oakland yesterday to see mistake on a team called town business. it was the first ever building bridges basketball game. last week 18-year-old nia wilson was stabbed to death on bart. there was also concern about a white supremacist group coming to town. this game was a welcome event for city and community leaders. >> this is like a reintroduction with the community and police to have a basketball game and then the difficult conversations. >> we've seen a week of senseless violence in our city. just to have an opportunity for everybody to come to a peaceful event where we can engage and get to know each other and fellowship playing basketball. >> when the buzzer sounded opd walked off the court with the high score, but everyone agreed the real winner was oakland.

also the poor air quality. the air quality warning only goes until 8:30. i have a feeling this is going to be extended for the joaquin valley. thunderstorms won't bring rain and stop the ferguson fire. temperatures greater than 100, palm springs and fresno and chico. 96 sacramento. the smoke is not leaving the sierra. tahoe hazy today all the way through saturday. fire crews in shasta county are trying to get control of the carr fire. >> it's burned more than 95,000 acres and destroyed hundreds of homes in redding. six people have died. abc 7 news reporter dion lim is in redding with the latest. dion? >> reggie and alexis, many residents here tell me they consider the carr fire to be the worst in shasta county history. this is why. take a look, two my left you see just a shelf a home standing there on a hill and in every single direction you turn, homes completely leveled. we're in a neighborhood 15 minutes northwest of downtown. you can see this home is

leveled, except for a fireplace that's standing and then the random oddity, a home right next to it completely untouched. now the latest numbers from cal fire shows that fire spreading to 95,000 acres and has claimed 6 lives so far. but a bit of relief today as containment tripled over the weekend to now 17%. with nearly 40,000 people evacuated the red cross has set up five emergency shelters across the county. the biggest one at shasta college where on average they are housing 500 to 600 a night. many miss the comforts of home and getting adjusted to their new normal. >> taking a shower and getting clean clothes on and shampooing my hair, i can't go in and get clean clothes. it will take a while to get back into the routine. >> one of the evacuated is a sheriff's deputy with shasta county. he had less than three hours to leave his home with his wife and children and this is all that's

left. through it all, remarkably enough, that deputy has continued to work the front lines helping others in his community. across town the merry lake neighborhood was badly damaged. we met many trying to return home tole is vaj whatever they can. now we certainly ran into a lot of people, even some who have been trying to return to their homes, but the danger is still great. hot spots and live gas lines, authorities say they are turning people away. in redding, i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. back to you. >> thank you, dion. among the victims in the carr fire, a woman and her two great grandchildren. this is melody bledsoe, 5-year-old james roberts and 4-year-old emily roberts. they died after fire swept through their keswick estates home. this morning we're hearing from melody's husband ed and his account of how he tried to save them. >> i talked to junior on the phone until he died. he just kept saying grandpa, he

said, come get me. he said come and get me. the fire is coming in the back door. i said i'm right down the road. he said come and get us. emily said, i love you, grandpa. grandma says i love you grandpa. and junior says i love you. come and get us. come and get us. i said i'm on my way. i said -- he talked until he died. i tried to call him back. it went to nothing. poor babies and my wife. what did i do wrong? >> that is just heartbreaking. we sent a push alert as soons we received updated numbers from the carr fire and alerts for local evacuations and updates on our abc 7 app. we're just learning about a secret program from the tsa that's been going on for years and it involves air marshals tracking people who aren't on watch lists. >> reporter matt keller live for us in san jose to explain

matt? >> good morning, reggie and alexis. excessive fidgeting or sweating, using a computer, cold, penetrating stare orei the attention of u.s. air mushls. t -- marshals. the program called quiet skies, used nationwide, targets u.s. citizens not in the terrorist database or suspected of wrongdoing according to the tsa. as first revealed under the program thousands of unsuspecting americans have been watched by armed, undercover air marshals. the marshals take notes on what certain passengers do, who they talk to, even if they use the bathroom. tsa tells abc news they follow videos who may have erratic travel patterns but it is not a surveillance program. the air marshal association president said currently the quiet skies program does not meet the criteria we find acceptable. reporting live here in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. to your morning money

just joining us about to go out the door the seven things you need to know. breaking news, abc 7 news has confirmed former bay area congressman and former mayor of oakland ron dellums has died. we're told he died last night of an illness and he was 82 years old. >> number two, the mendocino complex fire in lake and mendocino counties has burned more than 30,000 acres. six homes have been destroyed and evacuation center is open at twin pine casino in middletown. >> number three the carr fire burning in shasta county continues to grow to more than 95,000 acres. it is only 17% contained. and the death toll has risen to six including a woman who died protecting her two great grandchildren who also perished in the fire. >> number four, good news, the fire threat is starting to wane. the red flag warning hopefully ends this morning. we're going to have hazy sunshine and multilayers of clouds and seasonal temperatures
