>> reporter: this is a very serious situation, that fire getting closer by the hour, nearing that ridge about 4 miles from where we are just outside the town of lake port with a mandatory evacuation order. this is highway 29, this is highway 175, kelseyville, about 5 miles to the south and to the north, check that out, the rest of this complex fire not far from the town of upper lake. firefighters say they're attacking it from all sides but admit they need reinforcements. a massive wall of flames marched over a ridge of 175, moving closer to the town of lake port, cal fire making rapid fire tanker drops to try to stop the monster fire. >> it's coming in pretty hot this second and coming down and going up and you don't know what it will upper

lake. california fire says overnight, six homes were destroyed including this home off i call known for years and year -- destroyed for so many homes -- lost their homes. >> reporter: pat owns the grocery where customer who have chosen to ignore it are stocking up in supplies. >> it's mandatory evacuation for upper lake but it didn't make it into town anywhere. >> reporter: what's the plan? >> wait it out. >> reporter: the town of lakeport looks like a ghost town. five people have been arrested for looting including these suspects whose picture this is a released. >> we will not tolerate looting behavior and will be very aggressive checking people out. >> reporter: cal fire said they

need extra resources with some crews working double shifts. >> it's been hard to get resources we need to get the mission accomplished. >> reporter: today, cal fire has put the call out for extra firefighters. the good news, we are told they are arriving or on the way today. about 10,000 people under evacuation orders tonight. evacuation shelters have been set up in middletown and the sound of ukiah. live in lakeport tonight, abc7 news. >> cornell, thank you. now to the carr fire, substantial improvement. containment up to 20% but the firefight is really far from over. tens of thousands of residents are anxious to get back to their homes. laura anthony is live in the town of redding. what a scene behind you, laura. >> that's right. those containment numbers are slowly climbing.

as bad as it looks in this neighborhood, there's been no significant increase in the number of structures burned since thursday night to friday. cal fire counting the burned out homes. in the meantime, we have seen people reach out to one another in ways big and small. >> reporter: it's not what these guys were sent here to do. construction workers bringing in heavy equipment for the carr fire. when they saw a frightened horse running through a burn area, they tried to coral it. it wasn't to be, but it's another example how this community is rallying to help one another. just as thousands of firefighters are doing their part to hold the line on a closer to redding nea east ayer residents evacuated from their

over the weekend, a tree hit 33-year-old brian hughes. he let a hotshot crew who go into the heart of firefighters and dig trees and firelines. the fire is now 75% contained after burning 135 acres and eight structures. this blaze broke out saturday forcing the evacuation of the berrios highlands residential community and the cove resort. no injuries and the cause is still under investigation. the smoke from the california firefighters is being picked up by noaa satellite. this image taken yesterday. the brownish is the fires drifting to the east. let's get to spencer christian with the latest. >> we will take a look first at the ranch fire. 94 degrees there. relative humidity is dangerously low, 24%.

in san francisco and oakland and 10-21 miles an hour generally across the entire region. what's producing that wind? counter clock circulation to our northwest. counter-clockwise flow pressure to our east. the result is strong and steady on shore flow and breezy conditions you pushing smoke and haze from the immediate bay area but getting rather smokey in the central valley and foothills. mainly mid to upper 50s for the overnight low. lingering fog. skies generally bright inland but coastal a bit foggy and sunnier conditions throughout the day although we will see appearance of haze to the east and northeast because of the smoke from the fires. highs, 60 at the coast tomorrow to 70s in the bay and 90 in the

this is abc7 news. >> here are the storie making headlines at 4:30. cal fire issued new evacuation orders at clear lake. people east of highway 29 and sellsyville and finley have been told -- kelseyville and finley have been told to get out of the way immediately. cal fire has put in a call for more help to stop the flames. more than 50,000 acres burned and 10,000 structures threatened. showing a heart on a fire line, 2-year-old gracie is handing out sandwiches to firefighters at the carr fire in shasta. she has two uncles and grandfather helping fight the 98,000 acre fire. so young gracie wanted to do her part. one of the challenge dealing with rescue efforts for those

fires, where to keep all the affected pets, many people had to put their dogs in shelters. here to tell you how some bay area organizations and companies are mobilizing to help. >> there are two bay area non-profits that really deserve our attention, the my low foundation and mad dog rescue. they mobilized quickly to collect and take supplies up north. kudos to petland express, an oakland based company donating food and crates. carol of mad dog rescue was loading up a van full of crates and pet supplies as people came to drop off donations. >> basically right now we need food, cleaning supplies, paper towel, clorox wipes, bleach, food bowl, water bowls. >> many supplies are gathered by another nonprofit, the milo in

richmond. when they learned they needed crates and litter boxes, people began dropping them off here. mad dog rescue has been taking these supplies up north. one of the largest pet rescue shelters had to move from anderson to redding and they are now moved to a strip mall and housed in seven different locations. they are doing well up there and doing a fantastic job with a full staff of val tears working around the clock. >> people had to drop their animals to temporary shelters as they can't take them along as many are staying at shelters, hotels or relatives. the need for supply is greater than ever. the milo foundation is working with pet express in oakland. today, they quickly loaded palettes with food and crates and litter boxes ready to go, a lesson learned from previous

that is catching some republicans on capitol hill off guard. >> reporter: president trump is issuing a fresh ultimatum over his border wall. >> if we don't get border security, i would have no problem doing a shut down. it's time we had proper border security. we're the laughing stock of the world. >> reporter: that threat comes as a surprise to republican leaders who just last week met with the president to discuss government funding. >> like we always do, we had a productive meeting. >> reporter: they thought they agreed to postpone a fight over the border wall until after the elections. >> we have border wall funding under way. that is being funded. not a question of if, a question of when. >> reporter: the president's threat throws the timing up in the air. the border wall was one of the main campaign promises. mexico was going to pay for it, not u.s. taxpayers. >> we will build a great wall along the southern border and mexico will pay for the wall.

it's important to talk about fire insurance. >> michael finney is here with more on that. >> it's hard to watch any of our newscasts these days without wondering do you have enough fire insurance? we thought who better to answer that question than emily rogan, chief officer for united policyholders, a group based in san francisco that advocates for insurance consumers. let's start with the big question. here in the bay area and across the united states are we generally insured? >> no. after every disaster, about two-thirds of people don't have enough insurance to rebuild their home and they're low about six figures, not just what you have saved in the bank. >> this isn't just a little off? >> right. . you say, there's four ways to double-check your policy. how do you do that?

>> the number one way, take out your insurance policy, dust it off and check what your coverage a limit is, that's the big number. divide that by the square footage of your house to get a general sense what the cost per square foot would be to rebuild and call a local contractor, see if it's within the range. also, we like to use the human method. reach out to your insurance agent and make sure that you tell them that you want to be insured for the worst case scenario, one of these big wildfire events and make sure they know it's their responsibility to set those limits for you. the problem is if my house burns down by itself all alone, it's going to be the normal cost to rebuild it. if the whole neighborhood goes out it doubles, right? >> that's right. another piece of advice is buy the most extended replacement cost percentage you can afford. it's usually a buffer you can add, 25%, 50%, sometimes up to

10, so when we're talking about total losses, you have access to additional funds. >> you said talk to your insurance company or agent. are they trustworthy? oversell you or undersell you? >> they generally undersell you to make the sale and radio silence from there. as long as you make sure that you tell them that you want as much as it would take in the worst case scenario to protect your home, usually your biggest asset, homely they'll do the -- hopefully they'll do the right thing. >> when ever there is a fire like this, we always find people who say no one would insure me. >> there's always the last resort, a last safety net for california. there are other options there. make sure you're shopping around. you can reach out to an independent broker who can shop many different insurance

coming up tonight on abc7 at 8:00, it's the bachelorette, the men tell all and then "the proposal." we here at abc7 are celebrating a very special honor for one of our own. the abc7 general manager presented casey pratt with the mvp award for the month of august. it's the first time an abc7 employee ever received this award selected among the thousands of employees in the company. casey is the behind the scenes force of nature who leads our sports department. he writes, edits and produces original content for our newscast and digital platforms as well. a well-deserved honor for a hard working and truly special person. we congratulate you, casey. homeless and hungry for success was a sign a young man shared with people at a busy south bay intersection.

the homeless web developer was prepared to spend days offering his resume. all it took was one tweet from a passing driver to put him on the road to a new life. amanda has the story. >> reporter: homeless and hungry for success, that has been david's way of life the last 10 months. in mid-september he left his job in general motors to pursue a startup in silicon valley. issues with an investor made money even tighter for this texas native already living out of a van. >> some people say it's homeless by choice because i did live out of a van to cut costs. a lot of people do it here in california becaus the rent prices are so high. >> reporter: david tells me he spends his nights sleeping at a bench at a nearby park or nearby stairwell and wakes up at 5:00 a.m. to make it to this starbucks to recharge for yet another day of job hunting. for someone with so much gumption he said homelessness was gaining on him so he put on

a shirt and tie and stood for hours, not asking for money instead asking for a chance. >> i told myself, if i could get one person to take my resume to give me an opportunity i'd have hope. >> reporter: he handed out 19 of the 50 resumes he had printed friday. one went to jasmine scofield. >> i saw david and saw him with his sign, it was like, fate, the light turned red, perfect, i can at least take a resume. >> reporter: with his permission, she posted this resume and put it on twitter. it quickly turned viral. days later, cofield's kind gesture is generating attention he always dreamed of. >> opportunities out-of-state and here for startups, in toronto, in tokyo, it's been all over. it's incredible. >> reporter: in mountain view, i'm amanda castillo, abc7 news. >> it is incredible. there are several opportunities that have developed within
