live where you live, this is abc 7 news. rattled nerves tonight after the largest little quake in 20 years shook the san pablo bay ar area. the mendocino complex has exploded. the two fires called the river and ranch fires have scorched more than 68,000 acres. they're only 5% contained. >> the fire keeps inching closer to homes. >> reporter: the entire area now a ghost town tonight as most of the residents have packed up. they left because of the fire danger becoming real for this community as the fire moves eastward here. just to put this all into

perspective, two days ago on saturday the town's middle school was open as an evacuation center. not the case anymore. as the mefire continues to burn another community in its path. >> here it is just down the road. >> reporter: this small texan of 3300 residents told to get out. >> that's my only pet that i have. >> reporter: as residents were heading out, many stopped by to refuel. this station ran out of gas. >> i had to come down to work. people need gas, they need water. they need oil for their car. >> reporter: others have hundre. jean has her truck ready to go with her family's essentials having lost her home in the valley fire three years ago, she says she'll stay until the last second. >> if it gets dark and i see some big flames, yeah, i'll get out of here. >> reporter: she's worried about

possible looters. five people were arrested for looting in the nearby town of lakeport including these four suspects seen here. fire officials admit more reinforcements are needed to stop the fire's progression. >> the fire's been really active all day. the temperatures coupled with the wind has made for some extreme fire behavior. >> reporter: as firefighters hope to catch a break, residents are left to wait. >> it could be a week, could be a couple days zblanch sdays. >> reporter: residents don't know when they'll be allowed back. so far 24,000 acres have burned with containment only at 5% with thousands of structures still in danger tonight. the weather has been challenging for crews across northern california. meteorologist sandy patel is tracking it very closely on the fire line. >> it was in the 90s this afternoon.

it's 25 degrees cooler near the ranch fire. it is 70 degrees. relative humidity has doubled since this afternoon. river fire also much cooler. humidity is much higher. the only pbad part about the river fire is it's still gusting up to 19 miles an hour. the wind will ease. hoping that during the overnight hours firefighters can get a break. from our sutro tower camera, you can see that smoke in the distance, also looking at the fog. the carr fire is spreading north tonight allowing some evacuations south to be lifted. today the fire grew to 103,000 acres. six people were killed by the fire including two children and two firefighters. abc 7 news reporter lorie anthony has the latest.

>> reporter: with the carr fire now burning 15-20 miles to the west of redding, the process of repopulation is slowly beginning here. but for residents who live in subdivisions badly damaged like this one, the wait will be a little bit longer. it's not what these guys were sent here to do. they're construction workers bringing in heavy equipment for the carr fire. but when they saw a frightened horse running through a burn area, they tried to corral it. it doesn't to be but it's another example of how this community is rallying to help one another. just as thousands of firefighters are doing their part to hold the line on a massive f slowed in recent days, here nearby buckhorn summit fire crews worked to knock down the flames before they get into the trees. closer to redding, many of the nearly 40,000 residents evacuated from that i shaeir ho eager to go home.

centered in the north bay. it's the largest of the small quakes to hit the area in 20 years. >> reporter: behind me is san pablo bay, the epicenter of today's quake. earthquakes here are pretty common. >> i thought maybe it was like the moving furniture, but it was definitely louder. >> reporter: north bay residents weren't sure what was happening. in marin's unincorporated community of black point, everyone felt something. >> i thought i left my car in gear out front. i sat down in front of my computer and boom. i looked outside to see if my car hit the house. >> reporter: the source of that boom came from 7 1/2 miles below san pablo bay where the hayward fault and the rogers creek fault are believed to be connected. >> it's not the first time this general area has been the location of numerous small earthquakes in the last 20

years. this just happens to be the largest of those. >> reporter: what's more, experts say there's a 33% chance there will be a 6.7 magnitude quake here by 2043. no damage was reported but it did rattle plenty of nerves. >> there's only been a few large enough for me to feel, but definitely scares me. >> reporter: there was an aftershock about an hour and a half later. it registered as a 1, too small for anyone to notice. women and children robbed at gunpoint nearby an iconic san francisco landmark. police say a family were walking near the palace of fine arts yesterday morning when a man and woman approached with a gun. the suspects made off with a purse, wallet and cell phones. no one was hurt. a san francisco county sheriff's deputy has been reassigned after having a department issued gun stolen

from a vehicle. the vehicle was parked outside the deputy's home in fairfield. this is the third weapon stolen from a san francisco deputy's vehicle in the last year. former u.s. lawmaker and oakland mayor ron dellums has died. he shook up washington during his years there, challenging the vietnam year and cofounding the congressional black caucus. he also spent four years as mayor of his hometown oakland and was a long time community activist there. >> he left a mark in oakland. he actually created a nonprofit to fight for equal justice in oakland. so i think it he left his fingerprints. >> i spoke with the mayor several times including this interview in 2006. he also asked me to preside oves
