rattled nerves tonight after the largest little quake in 20 years shook the san pablo bay ar area. the mendocino complex has exploded. the two fires called the river and ranch fires have scorched more than 68,000 acres. they're only 5% contained. >> the fire keeps inching closer to homes. >> reporter: the entire area now a ghost town tonight as most of the residents have packed up. they left because of the fire danger becoming real for this community as the fire moves eastward here. just to put this all into perspective, two days ago on saturday the town's middle school was open as an evacuation center. not the case anymore. as the mefire c c c c c c c

another community in its epath. road. >> reporter: this small texan of 3300 residents told to get out. >> that's my only pet that i have. >> reporter: as residents were heading out, many stopped by to refuel. this station ran out of gas. >> i had to come down to work. people need gas, they need water. they need oil for their car. >> reporter: others have hundred k -- hunkered down. jean has her truck ready to go with her family's essentials having lost her home in the valley fire three years ago, she says she'll stay until the last second. >> if it gets dark and i see some big flames, yeah, i'll get out of here. >> reporter: she's worried about possible looters. five people were arrested for looting in the nearby town of lakeport including these four suspects seen here. fire officials admit more

the only pbad part about the river fire is it's still gusting up to 19 miles an hour. the wind will ease. hoping that during the overnight hours firefighters can get a break. from our sutro tower camera, you can see that smoke in the distance, also looking at the fog. the carr fire is spreading north tonight allowing some evacuations south to be lifted. today the fire grew to 103,000 acres. six people were killed by the fire including two children and two firefighters. abc 7 news reporter lorie anthony has the cr fe w burning we odd beginning here. but for residents who live in

subdivisions badly damaged like this one, the wait will be a little bit longer. it's not what these guys were sent here to they're constructi bringing in heavy equipment for the carr fire. but when they saw a frightened horse running through a burn area, they tried to corral it. it doesn't to be but it's another example of how this community is rallying to help one another. just as thousands of firefighters are doing their part to hold the line on a massive fire that's at least slowed in recent days, here nearby buckhorn summit fire crews worked to knock down the flames before they get into the trees. closer to redding, many of the nearly 40,000 residents evacuated from that i shaeir ho eager to go home. >> pull together, stay positive there's so many in this community helping. we know we're going to all get through it. >> we just got to be patient. we're all at the mercy of the

fire. it's not just the pyre. we've got power lines down and services cut off, gas lines, water lines. >> the worst part is not knowing. >> reporter: this man knows his neighbor's house is okay, but he's not sure about his. >> you just never think it's going to happen to you, so youo work 20 years to put things together. even if the house is there, the landscape is going to be just terrible. >> reporter: we told him we would check on his house for him. we did and this is what we found. now the timing of the repopulation is a huge factor here. some residents simply have nowhere to go. the shelters are full, the hotels are full. even if they weren't, some people told us they simply don't have any money to pay for them. >> just terrible to see.
