vic? >> well, this is a rest stop at the entrance to lakeport. you can see behind me that thick inversion layer, that's where firefighters stood their ground last night. a thick inversion layer blanketed the hills on the western edge of clear lake above the water's edge. the thick umbrella hid the flames of the mendocino complex fire that already burned 75,000 acres. some residents of a rural community called potter valley had been evacuated. they were allowed in today. but not miguel, who was forced to leave his home saturday. you could see the thick plume of smoke shooting over the mountain near his home. >> it's kind of over. >> reporter: the mountain? >> yeah, over the mountain on the left side of it. >> reporter: the left side of the mountain is where the fire is heading, the fire that's hard to contain, the firefighter's natural enemies, the heat, turbulent winds and dry and abundant fuel. >> vegetation that's 10 to 20 foot tall, hasn't burned

before, that it, from my estimate, hasn't burned in decades. >> cal fire battalion chief fred lopez, they were getting supplies and checking equipment before going to sleep in these special trailers with42beds. this is the fire base which now houses some 2,000 firefighters. they're all working 24-hour shifts. lopez's strike team worked until 8:00 a.m. this morning. they have some success overnight. >> we were able to continue to flank the fire, and keep it from moving further south. >> reporter: but their resources are stretched thin. there were just too many fires in the state. reenforcements, however, are coming. >> we do have resources coming in from about six other states. with other states helping from across the united states, including florida. >> we're still on the first depp at evacuation check points.

>> kristen, thank you. let's go right to spencer christian for an update on conditions. vic lee was standing there, and it looked windy. >> it is very windy, windier today than yesterday. bad weather news to report for the fires, mendocino complex fires first up at the ranch fire, 92 degrees right now. relative humidity, 28%, wind gusting 18 miles per hour. river fire, 94 degrees there, 24% relative humidity, and wind gusting at 20 miles per hour. the weather factors are unfavorable. wind gusts diminish in the early morning hours tomorrow. they will reintensify in the early evening. let's move up to the area of the carr fire near redding where it is 102 degrees right now, relative humidity, 22%, wind gusting to 14 miles we are hour. once again, very unfavorable weather conditions for containing the fire. meanwhile, despite the huge volume of smoke being generated by these fires, air quality in

you know, terrain that's inheng area, thef vegetation that's there, and we know that we have that both in lafayette and walnut creek. >> reporter: here in the east bay, urban areas interface with wildlands. on the backside last week was a big warning. >> there's so much deadwood out there and fuel for any fire up and down this whole state. i'm surprised the whole state isn't burning at times. >> the drought years killed millions of trees across the state and here in the bay area. >> with the 2016 rains, the big storms that came in, and all that new vegetation grew, and now it's dead again. it just compounded the issue, and we just have a massive fuel loading everywhere in these foothills. >> reporter: these fire experts say there's not much that will dramatically reduce the risk. perhaps more vegetation control,

made great strides in break-ins. by phone, northern station's captain says there wasn't a patrol unit assigned that early sunday morning. the president for the san francisco police officers association says more officers are needed in general. >> i think every district is kind of faced with wanting more foot patrols. >> i'm with the poa on that, of course we need more officers. >> reporter: this afternoon the san francisco board of supervisors unanimously passed its budget. >> which includes $32 million for additional resources for the police department that will bring on 250 more officers over the next four years. >> even if we're able to attain that goal, it's still not going to be able to keep up with the amount of people we're losing. >> reporter: he says more officers are retiring earlier, selling back a percentage of their unused sick hours before that benefit goes away. there's also a 35% attrition rate from the academy to the completion of field training. and officers with less than five years at sfpd are going over to other agencies. meantime, tourists say they'll be more vigilant.

her family reported her missing the next day after she did not show up for work. at least 21 cars were damaged in a parking garage collapse in texas. as you look at this video, it is amazing that no one was hurt. a 40 by 40 foot section of the garage in irving collapsed this morning. some cars ended up on top of each other. officials are still investigating what led to this collapse. a chipotle restaurant in ohio, illnesses were linked to that location, the health department has received 400 calls of people reporting illnesses wince sunday many mentioning they did eat at this specific chipotle in powell, ohio. in a statement, chipotle closed the store yesterday out of an abundance of caution. it's recovered from a series of food scares. the effort to avoid phone addiction, what one country is now doing to keep kids off phones. >> and go ahead, you can hold

heads up for anybody planning a weekend ride on bart through oakland in the coming weeks. bart says no trains will run between west oakland and the 19th street station, or between west oakland and the lake merritt station during four upcoming weekends so crews can make track repairs. buses will shuttle the passengers between those stations free of charge during the impacted weekends the following, this saturday and sunday, the weekend of august 25th and 26th, and then labor day weekend, which is september the 1st through the 3rd, as well as september 22nd and 23rd. are you afraid of germs on bart or other public of things to be afraid of. but you might actually be able to grab on without having fear. stephanie ramos has the details. >> reporter: we've all been there, trying to balance ourselves on the subway or a bus without touching the handrails for fear of germs. we get off and use hand

sanitizer immediately. here's the good news. a new study from hong kong shows that most of the bacteria on commuter trains are harmless. researchers sent clean-handed volunteers to the subway system who agreed to hold onto the rails during morning rush hour. then they checked their hands for germs. most of the bacteria turned out to be from people's skin. they did find a few harmful bacteria lurking in these commuter trains, but these were not nearly as common as the harmless bacteria. experts tell us boston and new york subway rails are also filled with harmless bacteria. so grab on without fear. don't forget to wash your hands afterwards, just in case. with this medical minute, i'm and a warning tonight about procedures that promise women benefits ranging from sexual enhancement to reduced side effects of menopause. half a dozen manufacturers were

up to 50s to low 50s along the coastline where it's cooler. there's some animation to show you what to expect to happen tomorrow. the fog is burning back near the coast and there's a warmup into 70s and 80s mostly inland tomorrow, and upper 60s to 70s along the bay. the projected highs, 63 in san francisco, 70 across the bay and oakland. upper 80s and near 90 in the east bay. north bay highs will range widely from 86 at santa rosa to 93 at cloverdale, and 98 at ukiah. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. a one-day warmup on friday as temperatures bounce back to mid-90s inland to 80 on the bay and 60 on the coast and then there's a gradual dropoff in temperatures going into the weekend. sunday and monday will be relatively cool with a nice breeze of onshore flow, and temperatures on the coast only in the upper 50s. but that's sort of standard for this time of the year.
