prosecutors say paul manafort believed he was above the law, that he lied to the irs and knowingly filed false tax returns, failing to report tens of millions of dollars he made working for a ukraine political party with deep ties to russia. he is accused of hiding the money in offshore bank accounts, and using the cash to bankroll his lavish lifestyle. luxury real estate, fancy suits, antique rugs. robert mueller's star witness, manafort's former business partner, rick gates, who also served as the president's deputy campaign manager through the election, gates pleading guilty to conspiracy and making false statements in exchange for his testimony. manafort's lawyer charging gates is willing to say anything to save himself. because he embezzled millions of dollars. >> any reaction, mr. manafort? >> reporter: manafort allegedly committed his crimes well before

he joined the trump campaign. the case doesn't involve any allegations of colluding with russia to meddle in the election, but the case seems to have shaken president trump, especially after fbi agents raided manafort's home just before dawn last summer. >> i thought that was a very, that was pretty tough stuff. to wake him up, perhaps his family was there, i think that's pretty tough stuff. >> reporter: the president now distancing himself from the man who once ran his campaign. >> you know, paul manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. >> reporter: now trump's own legal team is shifting strategy, moving from this simple declaration. >> there was no collusion at all. everybody knows it. >> reporter: to this from the president's lawyer. >> i've been sitting here looking at the federal code trying to find collusion as a crime. it's not. >> reporter: the president himself tweeting collusion is not a crime, but that doesn't matter, because there was no collusion.

no question the stakes are high for paul manafort, but they're sky high for robert mueller, too, this is the first case the special counsel has brought to trial. and if manafort is convicted, it would offer mueller a powerful response and take away some of president trump's ability to call this an aimless witch hunt. kyra phillips, abc news, alexandria, virginia. and it appears john kelly will be part of the white house staff for a while longer. he has accepted the president's request to remain on the job through the 2020 campaign. a senior official says kelly has said he intends to stay as chief of staff through 2024 should the president be reelected. an investigation is under way after a plane crash in mexico with a miraculous ending. >> it was a twin-engine jet packed with 103 people on board. all of them survived, but about

half of them hospitalized this morning, two in critical condition including the pilot. the passengers included a chicago priest who was injured but said to be resting peacefully. mexican officials blame the crash on a gust of wind during a severe storm. some of the trump administration's top immigration officials were at a capitol hill hearing defending the policy of family separation. one of them says conditions at family detention centers were quote, like a summer camp. senators from both parties were critical as danya bacchus reports. >> reporter: the grilling aimed atop immigration officials. >> who thinks the family separation policy has been a success, raise your hand? which member is responsible for zero tolerance and family separation? >> reporter: both democratic and republican senators questioning the trump administration's zero tolerance in family separation policy. a top official says the agency

warned the administration of the consequences. >> we raised a number of concerns in the program about any policy which would result in family separation. >> reporter: the senate judiciary hearing coming after reports of the administration failing to meet the court-ordered deadline to reunite all families separated at the u.s./mexico border. >> nearly 2700 children were separated from their parents and nearly 700 still have not been reunited with their families. >> reporter: the government saying those 700 children were ineligible but not providing details. chuck grassley saying the administration mishandled family separations, citing allegations of sexual and emotional abuse. >> that's unacceptable. and the american people expect better. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions announced the zero tolerance policy during a trip to the border this spring that

stable condition. but, again, it is amazing that everyone survived this plane crash. here's linsey davis. >> reporter: the passenger jet disaster, smoke billowing. the plane in tatters, broken up in a field. these haunting pictures were among the first posted on social media and mexican tv. aeromexico flight 2431 crashing in a field in durango mexico after 4:00 p.m. local time. the state's governor saying there was bad weather and pilots were attempting to abort just after takeoff, but it was too late. the plane going down just beyond the runway. witnesses seeing an explosion upon impact, the jet bursting into flames. emergency crews seen rushing to the scene to get survivors to hospitals. it left durango, a popular tourist location, en route to mexico city. the tail of a plane and trail of

smoke. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> incredible that everybody was able -- >> that they were able to walk away. we've seen some other plane crashes where people have survived. the asiana, and you saw them walking off the plane with their bags. i think there was a different sort of thing that played out here. people realized the plane was going to catch on fire and they were like, i'm getting out of here. >> good thing they did. president trump held a free-wheeling rally to drum up support for two republicans ahead of florida's election. >> he accused china of targeting america's farmers. in trying to make a point that voters should be required to show identification, the president proved he hasn't been to a supermarket in a long time, because he falsely claimed a photo i.d. is needed to buy groceries.

>> what are you buying at the grocery store? >> i guess alcohol. he hasn't been carded since the truman presidency. >> unlike you, of course. absolutely. a federal judge has temporarily blocked plans to allow blueprints for 3d printed guns to be posted online. these plastic guns are easy to conceal and difficult to trace. eight states sued to stop the release of the downloads, and president trump now appears to be siding with them. cecelia vega has more. >> reporter: anyone with a 3d printer can make one. a homemade gun, untraceable in a crime, no background check required. the plastic, critics warn, easy to sneak past metal detectors. the plans were set to go online for anyone to access at midnight. publishing them, a group called defense distributed. on their website, the countdown, the age of the downloadable gun formally begins.

the question, will this time be any different? but a federal judge in seattle has put a halt to the blueprints going online. it seems for now anyway this plan is on hold, not because of anything president trump has done. an aide was asked to clarify that tweet on 3d guns. the aide says we continue to look at all options while continuing to support the first and second amendments. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. and across the potomac from the white house, we learned more details of paul manafort's lavish lifestyle that were revealed today as his federal fraud trial does resume. the former campaign chairman is accused of funneling tens of millions of dollars to offshore accounts hidden from the irs. prosecutors say he believed he was above the law and used the money for real estate and fancy clothes, including an ostrich jacket. what is that, ostrich? they made no mention of the president or the campaign, but the trial is seen as a test of legitimacy for the mueller investigation.

and facebook is revealing political interference, now less than 100 days before the midterm elections. they banned some accounts. facebook did not say who is behind the accounts but did find links between them and accounts created by russian agents in their 2016 influence campaign. the pages that were just banned were followed by more than 290,000 accounts and ran 150 ads. now to california where at least seven major fires are burning out of control. >> the carr fire as we told you about, now one of the most destructive in the state history. it has burned at least 175 square miles, destroying nearly 1,000 homes and flattening entire neighborhoods. >> to the south, yosemite valley is closed until at least sunday due to heavy smoke. and the smoke from all the wildfires is drifting east, triggering air quality advisories all the way in las vegas.

a semi truck filled with hay caught fire on a kansas city, missouri highway. the flames left the roadway black and shut down traffic during the evening rush hour last night. some of the burning hay fell on cars below the roadway, and they ensued, caught fire as well. no one was hurt. and a bizarre incident in washington state has left a woman dead and another hospitalized due to dry ice. >> an ice cream delivery man kept four coolers of it in the back of his car. his wife borrowed the vehicle to drive his mother home. that's when dry ice vapors escaped the coolers and flood

the car with carbon dioxide gas. so the 77-year-old mother died from the fumes and the wife is in critical condition. >> horrible. >> yeah. and hundreds of demonstrators gathered in downtown minneapolis to demand justice for a man fatally shot by police. thurmond blevins died in june after being chased by police. prosecutors decided not to charge the officers, protesters called for them to be fired and arrested. a penn state student has pled in the hazing death. >> this comes as piazza's parents made an emotional impact statement. here is gio benitez. >> reporter: the only student to plead guilty will not spend anytime behind bars. 21 year old ryan burke telling the court he's sorry, pleading guilty to hazing.

piazza was given so much alcohol during a hazing ritual that he fell down a flight of stairs and died. burke and 25 others accused of waiting 12 hours before calling 911. he was sentenced to three months of house arrest, 100 hours of community service and more than $3,000 in fines. piazza's family reacting to the news. >> hopefully this sentence is a deterrent to other people. future fraternity members need to know there will be consequences. >> reporter: and the 25 other fraternity brothers have pleaded not guilty and await trial next year. gio benitez, abc news, new york. overseas in france, they are taking the dramatic step of banning phones in schools. >> they are banning internet-connected devices for children younger than 15. those with students older than

breaking news th breaking news this morning on "world news now," a passenger jet crashing just after takeoff in mexico. the aeromexico plane with 173 on board, crashing as you can see passengers were scrambling to get out alive, and all of them did. our correspondent arriving on the scene moments ago. the president's late night rally. he touted the strength of the economy and recent foreign diplomacy. and did he do a version of the robot? >> da, da, da, da, da, da, da. >> dance party. and new this half hour, something sure to alarm anyone with a dog. >> we're learning how a lick from a man's dog ended with him losing several limbs.

and david hasselhoff is living the dream, getting married to a woman he met while signing autographs? and reminding us, there's something undeniable about the hoff. it is wednesday, the first of august. >> happy august. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> yeah, leo. >> leo season in full effect right now? with august? happy august 1st. >> it's already august. >> i know. where did february go? >> that was a while ago. all right, we're going to start things off with breaking news this morning, that crash of an airliner with more than 100 people on board who all managed to survive. >> one official is blaming the crash on a gust of wind, as the airliner was taking off in the mexican city of durango, it went down at the end of the runway, leaving dozens injured, but a mexican official said most of the passengers left the plane

under their own power. victor oquendo is in mexico city. >> reporter: diane, kendis, that plane from durango was headed right here to mexico city, 99 passengers on board, incredibly not a single life was lost. it happened right after takeoff. a mexican governor here says a gust of wind hit the aeromexico plane causing it to lose speed and hit the ground with its left wing. that plane skidded into a field into a horizontal position, that allowed the slides to activate. it crashed one kilometer away from the end of the runway, a little more than a half-mile away. people were injured. more than 40 were taken to hospitals. at least two are in critical condition. and the pilot suffered some burns.

we've learned a chicago reverend on board also injured. the archdiocese said that reverend sanchez was on the flight, he sustained injuries but is alert and resting. the company that made the plane is sending a team of technicians to help in the investigation. locals calling it nothing short of a miracle. kendis, diane? >> victor oquendo in mexico. glad this one ended in a happy ending. the plane was just ten years old and serviced in february. the airline ceo said the jet had been perfectly maintained. >> the airline says it is working with all authorities to try to figure out the cause of the crash. one thing they're looking at are the weather conditions. a storm system was passing through at the time. probably what helped in the survival is that it was right there near the airport so the crews were able to make it there quickly. president trump rallying supporters in tampa, touting everything from the economy to his push for immigration laws.

>> he traveled to florida to back two republican candidates but also cited an unidentified poll that identified him as the most popular person in the republican party. he said it was easy to be presidential and then demonstrated how to be presidential. >> anybody can act presidential. ladies and gentlemen of the state of florida, thank you very much for being here. you are tremendous people. and i will leave now, because i am boring you to death. thank you. >> is he stealing your dance moves? >> he's stealing the dance

moves. i thought i had the robot all down pat or what i call anchoring the news. he did good with the robot there. so the president also said voters should be required to show photo identification and claimed that photo i.d. is needed just to buy groceries. what kind of groceries is he getting? >> i don't know, but it sounds like a fun party. meanwhile the trump administration seems to be upping the stakes when it comes to tariffs against china. the president has reportedly ordered 25% tariffs on chinese imports. that is up from the planned 10%. the increase is not finalized and it could still change. a new round of tariffs on products could take effect as soon as today. homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen says the united states will not tolerate interference, that russia's meddling is harming our democracy.

and she warned them to stop or there would be a high price to pay. >> our intelligence community has it right. it was the russians. they know that. we know that. it was directed from the highest levels, and we cannot and will not allow that to happen again. >> speaking at the same summit, mike pence also said he accepts the intelligence community's assessment that russia meddled in the election and both said that no votes were changed. facebook is taking action in what it calls sophisticated efforts to influence american politics. it has removed dozens of accounts that were designed to set americans against one another. those accounts possibly linked to russia. here's rebecca jarvis. >> reporter: facebook banning pages with names like black elevation, mindful being and

resisters. those among 32 fake accounts, part of a covert campaign likely designed to influence the mid-term elections in november. cheryl sandberg admitted whoever was behind them went to great lengths to cover their tracks. >> it's clear that whoever set up these accounts went to much greater lengths to obscure their identities. >> reporter: while facebook says it's not yet clear who created the pages there are similarities to previously banned i.r.a. accounts but so far no links to russian pages. they were followed by more than 290,000 accounts and ran 150 ads. claire mccaskill says they recently tried to hack her office. they acknowledge these adversaries are determined, well-funded and constantly changing tactics.

rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. paul manafort returns to a federal court in virginia this morning for day two of his fraud trial. he is accused of a series of financial crimes. it is not focused on work with president trump or russia. if convicted, manafort could spend the rest of his life in prison. cbs chairman and ceo les moonves is facing a new sexual misconduct allegation. an unnamed woman filed a police report in february claiming he sexually assaulted her three times in the 1980s. the district attorney, however, has declined to file charges, saying the statute of limitations has expired. moonves is denying all allegations of sexual misconduct by six other women. california's wildfire has jumped a county line. residents in the town of lewiston are more scared than
