we're in august. >> nothing has changed outside. meteorologist mike nicco is about to confirm that. >> new month, same weather pattern. little tweak to it today, though. hi, everybody. the winds are faster coming off the ocean. you can see the wind bars blowing from the coast to inland and that's brought us once again drizzle and mist and look at the gray, clouds covering about all of our neighborhoods. now, as far as what's going to happen in the accuweather 12-hour planner, waking up the same this morning, cloud cover, mist, drizzle, and temperatures will see a little bit of a cooling, couple degrees near 70 to 80 noon around the bay and inland, 74 to 87 at 4:00. how about that commute. here's alexis with the details. >> looking busy here at the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights officially on about 5:38. i think maybe they were turned on a few minutes before that. filled up before that. looking at those normal delays back into the maze. just hearing about a crash around the 580 and 80 merge been the maze a little further but does not sound serious.

no injuries reported in that one. eastbound 580 where we have roadwork between greenville and 205. various lanes closed until 11:00 this morning and has a 20 minute delay. a look at this video, pretty crazy, chp says the driver of this blue suv led officers on a 30-mile chase going the wrong way on highway 280. all the way from >> -- near sfo to sunnyvale. several close calls with other drivers. the chase ended when the driver crashed into a big rig. no other injuries were reported. time lapsed video behind me shows the river fire as it grows out of control in mendocino county, this being combined with the nearby ranch fire and together they have now burned more than 80,000 acres. you can see here on our map where both of those fires are located. the ranch fire 10% contained,

the river fire 12%. evacuation orders were lifted last night for finley and kelseyville in lake county. abc 7 news was in kelseyville as people started returning home. homeowners we talked to wanted to thank firefighters but know there's a long way to go before those fires are fully contained. there are still many road closures in place. lake county authorities took these five people into custody. we don't have their pictures for you, unfortunately. but i can tell you that those folks were arrested for being in the wrong areas, evacuated areas of the mendocino complex fire and three of those five had been previously warned to stay out of that area. reggie? >> cal fire says the carr fire in shasta county has reached trinity county, causing the evacuation of the small community of lewiston. the fire has burned 113,000 acres, 30% contained. lewiston evacuees crammed into a

theater to get an update on the carr fire but some say they aren't getting enough information about what's happening on their side of the county line. >> it's just a repeat of everything that's happening in redding, which, you know, we're sad for all of that too, but this fire is still active on our side. you know, it's raging up there. >> firefighters say they are trying their best to keep people informed but they are not always able to get into specifics. a task force from the bay area is in whiskey town. it's seen devastation there, but members found an undamaged american flag still flying at the town's cemetery. the team decided to lower the flag to half staff in memory of the firefighters who died battling wildfires this year and posted these pictures. the task force is made up of an alameda fire battalion chief and a team from the arendo fire district. for more information on the fires including evacuation orders and what to do in case you need to evacuate, go to abc7news.com or use the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts

to get the latest breaking news when it happens. this is the moment that defined 49er dwight clark. the catch. one of the most memorable plays in sports history. >> the bay area knows dwight was mch more than that one play. a private memorial service will be held to celebrate his life. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live where his family and close friends will say good-bye today. >> good morning, reggie. as the service is private it is not open to the public. dwight clark died of als disease at the age of 61. he is known as one of the most beloved 49ers in the team's history. he served as a team ambassador in the bay area long after his football career ended. he was known for the catch, grabbing the ball with his fingertips on third down with less than a minute to go in the nfc championship game against the cowboys, sending the niners

now making amazing progress and even being removed from his ventilator for 30 minutes yesterday. hart fractured his neck, back and ankle when he crashed into the cliff at steamer lane on july 14th. san francisco supervisor valley brown is demanding a hearing to investigate major delays on dozens of muni lines. this according to the examiner. we told you about the problem last week. a shortage of drivers forcing mun my to leaving busses parked and busses become crowded and some are waiting 45 minutes to get on a bus. muni officials expect more operators to be trained by the end of this month which should relieve some of that congestion. the bay area supporting dozens of animals who no longer have homes in shasta county. find out how you can help next. >> plus the trump administration's bizarre reason for wanting to end strict gas mileage rules. >> and you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. check out the fog this morning.

pg&e prunes and removes over a million trees every year to ensure that hazardous trees can't impact power lines. and since the onset of the drought we've doubled our efforts. i grew up in the forests out in this area and honestly it's heartbreaking to see all these trees dying. what guides me is ensuring that the public is going to be safer and that these forests can be sustained and enjoyed by the community in the future.

turned into a collision. just minor injuries but an suv stalled out in the far left lane and unfortunately in a tough spot, several vehicles swerved out of the way and someone did hit it. both of those vehicles involved are off on the right shoulder now and just some minor injuries in that situation. a new collision in the trivalley at foothill road. rollover crash, and that is off on the embankment right now. sounds like we may have injuries. i believe chp has arrived on the scene, the right lane taken away. i'm guessing folks slowing down to take a look at that. stop and go from the 680 area in dublin. a check of the bay bridge toll plaza just before you get here within the maze, westbound 580 to 80 interchange earlier crash pushed to the shoulder. drive times next. >> thank you. tough drive this morning. speaking of driving the trump administration says people would drive more and be exposed to increased risk if their cars got better gas mileage.

"abc 7 mornings." >> all news. >> we're back at 6:15. some cats and dogs looking for homes in the redding area before the fires will be up for adoption in the bay area starting today. maybe you have some room for them at your house. 90 cats and dogs taken to the animal rescue foundation in walnut creek and to three other nearby shelters, removed to make space for new arrivals up north and when they arrive they're tested and given an assessment to check their behavior. >> they're getting individual attention, they're out of the smell of smoke, which, obviously, if we can smell it, their sense of smell is so much greater. they're settling in and they're they're amazing animals and showing remarkable progress.

>> if you check them out, all you have to do is look for the dogs named after a's and giants players. to the ferguson fire burning west of yosemite. plans to reopen yosemite valley on friday have been delayed until sunday or later because of the heavy smoke. park officials also closed the valley to the public. the fire has burned 58,000 acres and 33% contained. serena williams will never forget her trip to san jose and that's not a good thing. she suffered the most lopsided loss of her career in the tournament that's currently going on. serena had plenty of bay area support at the mubadala silicon valley classic last night but lost her match against johanna konta. it lasted only 52 minutes. for context, an average women's singles match about two hours. williams said she has so many things on her mind she doesn't have time to be shocked about a loss. the tournament continues in san jose today. she lost 0-1.

head through the next part of the show. let's focus in on san jose. here we are 280 at 17, cloudy this morning, about 62 degrees. look at that smoky sunrise from the east bay hills camera this morning, mount diablo in the distance. it will be sunny, mostly sunny, high clouds and haze once again this afternoon. seasonal temperatures for the most part. mainly cloudy, patchy drizzle, same pattern as this morning develops for tonight and for tomorrow morning. the new month the pattern is pretty much locked in. bear with me a lot going on in our micro climates from fog and drizzle in san francisco to look at the clouds, low clouds and high clouds and breezy conditions this kroonafternoon temperatures in the coast and mid 60s towards the bay. waking up to clouds, mist and drizzle in the east bay. we'll have high clouds, sunshine, breezy conditions, 67 in richmond to hercules and fremont is 76. 68 today in oakland. mostly cloudy right now on the peninsula. patchy mist out there. breezy this afternoon with high clouds and sunshine. 77 in redwood city, menlo park,

upper 50s near 60 along the coast. as far as the south bay goes we're waking up cloudy but high clouds and sunshine and mid say low -- upper 70s to some mid 90s out there. up in the north bay hazy conditions in the 90s and it's not going to be quite as warm but still a lot of upper 80s to low 90s inland. . my accuweather seven-day forecast, what you're going to see is a slight drop, a bump up friday and saturday and slight drop next week. morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. >> i'm seeing some of that mist and fog here on the bay bridge commute. once you make it to the san francisco side. so no major delays into san francisco. the lower deck of the bridge eastbound 80 around treasure island we had reports of a disabled limo and taxi that lost a wheel. those have disappeared from the board, though. looks like we don't have lanes blocking. somehow they were able to either clear both of those quickly or maybe that was just some misinformation called in to chp. we will take it, though.

another hazy day unfolding but our air quality will be good. in mendocino it's unhealthy. the very unhealthy around fresno towards yosemite and also north of the carr fire. sad situation there. >> thank you. some dramatic video to show you. a large bus on mount diablo clearly over the double yellow line narrowly misses a cyclist. one cyclist told us she was warned to get as far right as she could and nearly ended up getting hit by the bus. >> if i had not moved over as far as i could, it would not have been a good day for me. i mean a bus that size that is not able to maneuver and take the sharp curves it should not be on a mountain. >> a spokesperson for california state parks says the agency contacted the school in charge of the bus. large groups are roirds to have a permit.

the corners are too tight for a large bus to stay in its side of the roadway, double stripe or not. park officials tell us the chp is reaching out to school groups to talk about safety on trips to mount diablo. house minority leader mike pence wants answers and now. according to the chronicle she is calling for a sweeping investigation for the cleanup into the form l hunter's point naval shipyard. she fought for decades to obtain funding for the shipyard which has been a waste site since 1989. the cleanup contractor is tetra tech. former workers accuse the company of violating safety standards to make money and the site appear clean when it wasn't. new at 6:00, a just released study finds female soccer players are more susceptible to brain damage from heading a ball than male athletes. a form of scans that detect damage found damaged tissue was

it's all happening fast. >> you are never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. mike nicco, we are soaring above california with this image behind us. >> beautiful from the east bay hills showing the smoke off in the distance. i will show you another vantage point with live doppler 7. overlaid the fog layer and the fog is thick. in petaluma. less than an eighth of a mile. dangerous throughout the morning commute. it does thin out towards santa rosa. here's a look at the exploratorium, the mist and drizzle in the air. temperatures the same as yesterday, low to upper 50s. 50s at the coast throughout the day with limited sunshine. slightly cooler by a few degrees. hardly noticeable. the sea breeze will be faster. unfortunate you'll notice that. 74 to 87 at 4:00. 69 to 77 at 7:00. how about the morning commute? >> we've got a couple slow spots out there this morning but overall it hasn't been terrible.

taking a look at our traffic maps we will zoom in to the trivalley at foothill road. i was doing fine until i look over and everyone is laughing. thanks a lot, guys. okay. right around foothill road a rollover crash one vehicle involved and the right lane blocked. the vehicle ended up on the embankment. emergency crews are there. here's a check of the bay bridge toll plaza. metering lights on. our typical delay into the maze. new overnight, two-vehicle crash in san jose sent one person to the hospital. here is new video of the crash at 19th and taylor streets. a van flipped over and hit a power pole that caused a power outage in the area. a sedan suffered significant damage. fire officials say the crash happened around 11:30. the van driver is okay but the other does have major injuries. the home of apple

headquarters won't get a per person tax at least not yet. >> cupertino's city council is delaying the issue after a number of businesses gave a thumb's down to the new way of taxing employers. reporter matt keller is live in cupertino for us. >> good morning, jessica. everyone will get some time on this headed for the ballot but not for this november. voters will decide on this in 2020. several people got up in front of city council last night and spoke out against this new potential head tax. the proposal would change the business license tax from being based on square footage to per employee. the bigger the company the more you pay. apple would contribute the most from 7 to $9 million depending on the proposal. businesses with less than 100 employees would pay a base rate. 16 people spoke, all against the measure against the chamber of commerce. >> if we make our city less competitive people can just go across the board or other cities that don't have the head tax and they will be more than happy to

have a large company join their ranks. >> the city says it would use the general revenue to cut traffic congestion but a concern is the lack of a specific spending plan. the city will spend the next two years focusing on that. reporting live in cupertino, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. this morning some people living in mendocino and lake counties are back home after being evacuated by the wildfires. >> the fires have burned more than 80,000 acres. the ranch fire 10% contained. while the river fire is 12% contained. evacuation orders were lifted last night for finley and kelseyville in lake county. abc 7 news was there as some of the first cars returned back to kelseyville. we spoke to one resident who lives at the border of kelseyville and lakeport. he evacuated sunday night and returned home monday, only to get trapped on his property putting out hot spots. >> i had flames to the left and flames to the right. i felt i could be surrounded by

flames so i got out of there. >> many. >> apart from worrying about their homes a lot of people said they were worried about looters. firefighters in redding working around the clock to put out the carr fire which is now burned more than 112,000 acres. it is 30% contained. drone view 7 shows you the river ridge neighborhood where home after home burned to the ground. cal fire gave drone view 7 pilots special permission to fly over the fire zone yesterday. there's a growing emphasis now on the trinity county side of the carr fire, now that flames have reached over the county line. the national park service announced it closed whiskey town recreational area and will not likely reopen this summer. about 40 boats were destroyed at the marina this week and the only buildings left standing are the fire station and a couple of rest rooms. the staff was ordered to leave last week. as you know the wildfires forcing hundreds of families to leave their home. a man in the back of a pickup

truck recorded his harrowing escape from the carr fire. take a look. >> oh, my gosh. oh, my god. >> you can hear the anguish in his voice. justin sanchez recording this scene as hisamily evacuated. if you take a close look you can see flames near homes and also a fire looming in the background. sanchez and his family are safe. unfortunately their home was destroyed. we turn to president trump and his comment on grocery shopping that has the internet buzzing this morning. president trump falsely claimed a photo i.d. is needed to buy groceries. the president returned to the white house last night after speaking at a campaign rally in tampa, florida. his remarks occurred as he was making an argument for stricter voter i.d. laws. so he claimed i.d.s are required for about everything including grocery shoppig.

>> you know, if you go out and want to buy groceries you need a picture on a card. you need i.d. you go out and you want to buy anything, you need i.d. and you need your picture. >> president trump also accused democrats of obstructing his agenda and his supreme court judge nominee brett cava >> looks like we have a problem there. go back. happening today, dozens of cases believed to contain the remains of american service members killed in the korean war are scheduled to be flown back to the u.s. north korea returned 55 boxes of remains last week that will be transported from a south korea air force base to a military laboratory in hawaii for identification. north korean leader kim jong-un agreed to return the remains as part of the historic agreement made with president trump last month. today the trial for president trump's former campaign chairman paul manafort enters day two.

attorneys in the case offered opening arguments yesterday in the first trial brought by special counsel robert mueller. both sides told jurors there were liars in the case. prosecutors saying manafort believed the law didn't apply to him and lied to the irs. meanwhile, manafort's defense team countering and blaming the prosecution's star witness richard gates who is manafort's former deputy. the defense saying that gates is, quote, willing to say anything to save himself. manafort faces bank fraud and tax evasion charges. facebook is sounding the alarm this morning. the menlo park company says it has uncovered new efforts to medal with u.s. politics. facebook has banned 32 pages and account. it does not know who is behind the campaign and it could be russia but they say there's no link to any russian it addresses. the san francisco police officer association is responding to calls for more foot patrols following an armed

would drive up commercial rental prices and displace long-time chinese residents and businesses. san francisco has reached a first of its kind deal in california to tax uber and lyft rides. the supervisor says the ride share companies agreed to let the city tax a percentage of their revenue and that money will be used for transportation infrastructure projects. here's the breakdown of the tax. a 3.25% tax will be applied to single use rides, a 1.5% tax will be applied to shared carpool rides. in exchange for the deal the supervisor has agreed to withdraw his measure which would have been placed on the november ballot. some parents encouraging their kids to spend more time playing video games, even hiring coaches to help bring up those scores. >> this is all related to the popular fortnite game. it has more than 125 million players worldwide. it's become a sort of social
