we have a map showing you where fires are burning in california right now. 13,000 firefighters have responded to 16 fires, more than a dozen states are also sending additional help. good evening, thanks for joining us, i'm larry beil in for dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. the biggest battle closest to us is burning mainly in lake county. the ranch and river fires total 90,000 acres. that's about the same size as fremont, union city and milpitas combined. get to vic lee with the latest. >> reporter: well, larry, there's a community meeting here at kelseyville high school. supposed to start in an hour. there have been plenty of developments in the past 24 hours. for one thing, most of the residents of kelseyville where i'm at and nearby hopland are being allowed back into their homes now. the southern flank called the river fire is now 38% contained.

evacuation orders were lifted in most of kelseyville. jeremy and simone dotson were on their way home. >> what did you miss most? >> our bed. >> reporter: still, this warning from cal fire -- >> just because you do come back to your home doesn't mean the fire's out. >> reporter: a sign of normalcy returning, the town post office reopened today. a sigh of relief for many, like doug wallen. he had important and timely mail to send. >> what's the beginning of the month and if you don't get it to the credit card companies they still fine you. so anyway -- >> reporter: the gas mart cut its hours, and then returned to business as usual. most of the customers we met defied the evacuation order and stayed home. >> we worked our butts off for everything we have, and we just don't want to lose it. >> reporter: many stayed because they were afraid of looters. yesterday police and sheriff's deputies arrested eight people who were trespassing in the evacuated town of lakeport. >> we've gotten a couple people

with outstanding warrants. there is at least one person that had a significant amount of methamphetamine on his person. >> reporter: shelly barnes also stayed, but not to protect her property. she was afraid the power would go off. >> we're on a well. so animals would start dying without water. and we weren't going to let that happen. >> reporter: her ables, three horses and there, an 800 pound pig called mouse. love that pig. you'll recall that yesterday there was this very thick inversion layer hanging over lake county. today, that inversion layer, that haze and smoke does not seem to be as bad. but this afternoon i've noticed that that strong afternoon wind is starting to pick up, a wind that fuels those flames. so perhaps another challenging night for firefighters here. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you, vic.

that's the last thing firefighters want is more wind. to the fire in and around redding, state officials say all 60 reported missing in the fire zone have been located. people there are also starting to return home even though the fire is 35% contained. it's now scorched 115,000 acres. that is the size of the city of san jose. abc 7 news anchor eric thomas is there live for the latest. eric? >> reporter: and we are in the mary lake neighborhood where up until now there's been a steady stream of cars coming in since the evacuation order was lifted. we're on the southeast side of what was the carr evacuation area. as you see, things are slow now. but cal fire is allowing people to repopulate areas on this side of the carr fire where the blaze is largely contained. police check point was posted at the entrances to make sure that no one except residents and utility workers were allowed in. pg&e crews were on hand to check for gas leaks. for residents, the first order of business was cleaning up and moving back into homes.

you're about to hear from two people, a gentleman who actually came home before the evacuation order was lifted. and a woman who was just moving back in today. >> it was a ghost town, very surreal and eery, and so quiet, unbelievable. >> it's such a huge relief, walking in, seeing all my stuff there. i had to leave my fish. they are still alive, thankfully they made it. so now i'm just trying to get everything brought back over and get our lives back in order. >> reporter: and a helping hand, her 2-year-old niece emerald who helpsed bring the pillow into the house. >> they were making sure nobody was here who wasn't supposed to be here. a push to cut down on looting. this area is on the southeast side of the carr fire where things are getting contained. there's still a big chunk to the west and to the north that

firefighters are trying to get a handle on, especially the part that has slapped over into trinity county where the town of lewiston has been evacuated. we heard from some of those people last night when were waiting for word when they can return home. their luck hasn't been so good up until now. but the folks here in mary lake subdivision, they're happy to be back home. live in redding, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you. right now let's give you a look at our east bay hills camera. you can see the haze that we've been talking about. coming from one of the fires in mendocino and lake county. meteorologist drew tuma joins us now tracking conditions near the fire. the air quality inland and parts of the north bay, we have the smoke and haze and moderate air quality there. better air quality close to the coast. but we're going to do it all again tomorrow. conditions are not changing anytime soon. fire conditions will take you to mendocino and lake county at this hour. it's warm, upper 80s to lower 90s. the relative humidity is low,

lowest point of the day right now. the winds are still very active out of the west and southwest. they're gusting as high as 22 miles an hour. future, tomorrow morning, we do expect once again in the morning those winds to back off a bit. you get the daytime heating going. into the afternoon, the winds will crank up once again. by 4:00 or 5:00 in the evening, you can see the winds racing close to 20 miles an hour. the wind direction, once again, will bring that smoke into parts of the north bay and inland. the wind will bring cooler air tomorrow. numbers in a few minutes. this morning an 18-wheeler packed with relief supplies headed to the victims of the mendocino complex fires. this video provided by the food bank shows workers loading the truck this morning. ten pallets of water, snacks and cereal arrived. a tanker and -- the tanker

halling hot asphalt. >> the front cab and trailer are overturned. the hot asphalt mixed that was in there began leaking out. at this time it is a hazmat situation. >> the asphalt pooled into a sticky liquid foulup on the side of the highway. they estimated 2,000 gallons spilled out into a hot river. the pears ended up on the road and smashed into the back of a car. there are injuries, not clear if any are serious. lakeville highway reopened an hour ago. >> san francisco police are investigating a tragic deadly accident. a car ran over a man in a north beach parking garage. people who know him tell abc 7 news he was homeless, and may have been sleeping in the garage. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live from greenwich street. >> reporter: a tragic collision that happened out here around 7:00 this morning. i want to step out of the way and show you this garage where

it happened. there are a few businesses that operate out of this building. and people have told us as they're coming and going today that the garage is pretty dark around the entrance, just past the gate you're looking at. this afternoon, while we were out here putting together this report, two women who work with homeless people locally approached us and when we shared the victim's name sadly told us they knew him well. jonathan jones turned 48 just a few days ago. >> to say the least, it's tragic. >> reporter: christy fairchild is the director of north beach citizens. fairchild stopped by 725 greenwich street after hearing someone hit a man who may have been sleeping inside this garage. he was pronounced dead at the scene. the san francisco medical examiner's office identified the man as 48-year-old jonathan jones. >> it's really sad because we knew him. he was a good person. >> reporter: north beach citizens operations and program manager tiffany kim shared his driver's license photo with us.

>> he stopped sometimes to get his mail or see if we have a copy of his id. >> reporter: the driver who hit him stayed on the scene. jones has not been examined yet. police say they do not yet know whether the collision caused jones' death. the driver isn't facing any charges right now. >> we don't know what the condition of the male was prior to the traffic collision. >> reporter: the building houses several architecture, design and law offices. off camera, one employee said the garage is dark inside. people who knew jones say it's a tragic accident that highlights a more serious problem. >> it's just kind of a testament to the need for all of us to assist with people getting them off the streets and into shelter that they need. >> i think sometimes we forget that there's an issue. we kind of turn a blind eye. >> reporter: mayor london breed says it will take a lot of work. >> we have to do a better job as a city in providing the resources. but also we have to make sure

that people know that the option to sleep on the streets is not an option, especially if we have an alternative. >> reporter: melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. san francisco has a new budget tonight in a target for several problems the city faces. >> among them, homelessness. abc 7 news was where mayor breed signed a spending plan today, an additional $60 million being spend on the homeless population, including $4.4 million on a navigation sfr for homeless youth and $12 million for rapid rehousing programs for those who have just become homeless. >> we have to do a better job as a city in providing the resources, but also we have to make sure that people know that the option to sleep on the streets is not an option, especially if we have an alternative. >> more money will go towards affordable housing as well with more than $800 million dedicated to building and preserving nearly 3,000 units. the marine mammal center

helped rescue a sea lion from a popular tourist spot. >> the mom and pup were spotted nursing near the rocky shoreline next to the tiburon ferry terminal. the marine mammal center provided us with this footage. they decided it was best to relocate the pair to a more remote location. so they can spend the next six to nine months gaining strength and weight. they were attracting quite the crowd there. the center says it's a great example of the community alerting them about a potential harmful situation for wildlife health alert about salad. michael finney will show you which ones to check out. lessons learned from the north bay wildfires, survivors share their experiences and how they're working to rebuild after the devastating losses. plus -- anybody that knew dwight would not want a solemn, sad service. >> a final good-bye to a 49ers legend, the emo

a final good-bye today to former 49er dwight clark. >> loved ones filled san francisco's grace cathedral church for a private funeral service today. several former teammates were there to pay their respects. >> mindy block was also there. here now with more. >> the stories about dwight clark are just funny and uplifting. this was definitely a difficult loss. clark was known for his humility, kindness, charisma, compassion and definitely his sense of humor. he will be remembered for the catch. to those who knew him, clark's biggest influence is the manner in which he lived. nfl commissioner roger goodell and house minority leader nancy pelosi were among the

dignitaries who celebrated his life. before he died, he chose those he wished to speak at his funeral. >> not one for usually writing things down. but this is probably one of the toughest things i've ever had to do. >> the difficulties were overcome by the pure joy clark was known to bring to the fans and all of those who knew him best. >> not only were you an amazing athlete, professional and dedicated in every respect, but you're modest, warm and genial demeanor carried it to the level of perfection. >> he smiled up in heaven right now looking down at us like, wow, they're doing this for me? that's pretty cool. >> to see all these faces here brings back a lot of memories, fond memories, that is. and we're very, very fortunate because of that. >> the one thing that he always would say to me, though, is, you know, they don't call it the throw.

and so -- in ending i will say to you, dc, yes, that's true, my friend, and i will catch you on the other side. >> dwight's last days were hard. i talked to him nearly every day, and ronnie and i were with him when he passed. als took so much from dwight, but it couldn't break his spirit, and it didn't dare touch his heart and his great smile. don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. >> the former teammate owner has the goal post from the championship game in which the catch took place on his ranch in montana. a portion of clark's ashes were sprinkled under those goal posts. there's a plaque with his name

on it in the place he made the catch. that will mark his 49ers legacy. >> i was getting chills looking at all the greats from the past and those of us who spent time with him know this is a hard one. >> i worked with him for several years. one memory that sticks with me is we in the candlestick press box when the blackout took place, the whole stadium went dark. he was laughing, you know the best things happen in the dark. the best humor. always looked for the bright side in every situation. time to party. >> classic dwight. mindy, thank you so much. >> anytime. despite firefighters' best efforts, hundreds of people lost their homes in lake and mendocino counties. the question now, what's next for them and how do they begin to cope? >> abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley talked to some people that know exactly what they need to do. fire victims from santa rosa's deadly fire storm that took place ten months ago. >> lots of us are now reexperiencing our sense of loss. >> but for the grace of god we

survived a devastating fire. almost a year ago. >> when it happens to you, it becomes more than real. >> reporter: those who lost everything here in fountaingrove and other parts of santa rosa know what it's like to survive a fire one week, one month, ten months down the road. today they shared the life lessons they'd like to pass on. >> well, you do make it. you do manage to figure it out. you know, the insurance maze. >> reporter: richard allen took action on day two after his house burned down. he ordered a computer overnight, and called his insurance company. >> i called an attorney, and had an attorney help me and coach me. an insurance attorney. people that didn't do that, some of them did okay, and some of them are still floundering nine months later. >> say yes to those that are willing to help you. and you may not see them right now, but they are there.

they're public agencies, like fema and the red cross and the disaster centers. make sure you go in and register. >> i would use the advice my dad gave me, and that was just do one thing a day, and do that well, and then that will build your confidence. and then do another thing well the next day and pretty soon, after a piece of time, you'll have your life rebuilt. and be hopeful. because good things do come out of tragedies. >> reporter: in santa rosa, i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. now, your accuweather forecast with drew tuna. >> in accuweather today, another breezy afternoon. tomorrow those winds will bring in some cooler air midweek around here. live doppler 7 satellite showing you a lot of sunshine. but along the coast, there's fog that's thick in spots. pier 39 camera live look showing you the sea lions basking in the sunshine with folks taking in the sights in san francisco. it being wednesday afternoon, it is never too early to look at

the weekend forecast. so on saturday, very little change in terms of temperatures. cool coast, low 90s inland with morning fog to afternoon sunshine. on sunday, though, we'll see some high clouds streaming in from time to time and some minor cooling. instead of the low 90s inland, we'll settle in the upper 80s. that will feel nice for folks inland. the coast, it will be chilly this time of year with temperatures limited to the upper 50s with that fog. here's the numbers, cool 57 in half moon bay, 60 in san francisco. but you hop across the bay and you can see in concord that's at 90 degrees, 95 in brentwood. san jose comfortable at 80. santa rosa, a temperature of 85 degrees. across the board, the winds are active at this hour. you can see the sea breeze, about 20 miles an hour in san francisco. about 31, though, that gust currently through the delta and fairfield, 23 in clear lake. as we go through the future, you

see tomorrow morning it's not too breezy, except along the immediate coastline. by 7:00 in the morning we have the winds on the coast. gusting at times over 20 miles an hour. but that will change in the afternoon. by 4:00 or 5:00 tomorrow afternoon you get the daytime heating that kind of mixes up the atmosphere and it kicks in those winds. tomorrow, again, those winds likely gusting 10 to 20 miles an hour. overnight tonight, here's the call, the fog is along the coast. then after midnight it will spill into the bay once again. a lot of 50s on board the next 12 hours. early tomorrow morning, the light jackets still needed. that sun is up at about 6:14 in the morning. midday, we expect the winds to gradually pick up. it will be a breezy afternoon. but the winds, once again, will transport some cooler air inland. not as hot inland. however, those winds will bring in some smoke again inland and in the north bay. the haze will be with us once again. highs on thursday, a cool 62, in san francisco, up to 69. oakland, about 83 in san jose

with afternoon sunshine. that's nice in the south bay. 80 in napa. inland, not in the 90s tomorrow, antioch, up to 87 degrees. statewide, the heat is still there. central valley, fresno and bakersfield exceeding 100 degrees. l.a., it will be warm, you're traveling south, the high of 87 degrees. plan on the next seven days for you. fog this morning -- or fog tomorrow morning with afternoon sunshine. it is cooler inland. minor warming friday into saturday and then minor cooling. so fluctuations temperaturewise. the fog is clinging to the coast each and every day. >> thank you, drew. >> sure, yeah. you could say a particular ♪

the dmv is taking additional steps to try to ease wait times at its field offices. the department announced today it's expanding saturday service to 60 of its offices around the

state, that includes 11 here in the bay area. those offices will be open from 8:00 to 5:00. lines have been running out the door for months because of the federal government's new real id program. after the year 2020 you need to have a real id or carry your passport with you to get through airport security, even if you're flying within the united states. >> you may want to double check that salad you bought today. >> "7 on your side's" michael finney with a health update from the usda. i'm a big trader joe salad guy. i wish you would have told me an hour ago about that. >> oops. the department of agriculture issued the alert because of possible parasite contamination. it impacts a dozen items from major grocery stores, pork, beef and poultry salad sold at stores like trader joe's and walgreens and kroger. it can cause real problems, stomach and -- flu, fever-like

symptoms. the symptoms can develop more than a week after eating the contaminated food. we have a link on our website with more information about the affected products, go to abc7news.com. the federal reserve is holding off on raising its interest rate, at least for now. those rates, as you know, play a key role in loans to consumers and businesses. the feds say the economy is strong, and no change is needed. however, it does say rate hikes may still come in the months ahead. economists are expecting the next rate hike in september. as of today, bags of peanuts on southwest airlines are a collector's item. the airline has now stopped serving the iconic blue bags of nuts. you may remember last month i reported southwest planning to pull the snack from all flights due to allergy concerns. from now on passengers will receive bags of pretzels.

i'm kristen sze. >> i'm larry beil. for drew tuma, tonight, several developing stories as we come on the air. the plane crash, and tonight, the harrowing video now from inside the cabin. at least 65 americans onboard. the storm that hits just as the passenger jet takes off, and you'll see it. was it too late for the pilots to do anything? then the flames bursting from the fuselage. also tonight, the breaking news. sources close to the white house now telling our team that special counsel robert mueller wants to ask president trump about obstruction of justice. and we've now been told the president learned of this in just the last day. now the explosive tweet from the president, saying attorney general sessions should end mueller's rigged witch hunt right now. also, the major development late today. the news conference a short time ago. authorities need your help.
