cars completely swamped. 80,000 people live in this area, and now there is fears of a dam potentially failing. this morning, flash flooding overtaking the city of lynchburg, virginia. >> this is crazy. their front yard is a river. >> reporter: a dam nearly failing as several feet of water rushes over top. inundating the town of 80,000 residents. cars completely submerged as this person goes waist deep through the water. if the dam fails water levels could reach more than 17 feet in just seven minutes forcing residents to quickly evacuate their homes. >> by latest count they've gotten about ten people out. >> reporter: emergency crews performing swift, high-water rescues throughout the night, using boats to pull these children to safety. in central north carolina, the torrential rains causing this massive sinkhole. and this, a possible tornado touching down in new york city taking down trees and power lines in queens.

long speech the president made no mention whatsoever of election security. in his -- in a remarkable moment, cecilia, during that briefing with national security officials here at the white house, the top national -- the top intelligence official for the government, the director of national intelligence said he still does not know what president trump and vladimir putin talked about during their two-hour one-on-one meeting when it comes to election security. dan coats said, i am not in a position to either understand fully or talk about what happened in helsinki. that, cecilia, is quite a statement. >> a stunning admission. it truly is, jon. overnight the president made no mention of election security but is still not backing down from that threat to shut down the government if he doesn't get that money for his border wall. what do you know? will it happen before the november midterms? >> reporter: well, in fact, he said he would l tee the shutdown happen before the elections, but he acknowledged

that is something that officials in his own party, republican officials in congress, say would be a terrible idea. say would be a terrible idea. >> all right, jon karl, thank you very much. whit. >> thank you. now to the search for a 12-year-old girl who went missing at reagan national airport outside washington, d.c. she was seen on surveillance footage disappearing with a woman. authorities issuing an amber alert and the fbi is stepping in abc's kenneth moton is at reagan national airport with more. kenneth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. here's what we know. investigators believe jinjing ma is in extreme danger kidnapped by a woman who is asian. the 12-year-old girl was last seen here at this airport. she's been in the u.s. since last week with a tour group from china and on the way to the west coast when yesterday morning she walked away if her group shortly after arriving at this airport, passport in hand. authorities released new images overnight. police say surveillance cameras captured the female suspect arriving at reagan national and speaking with jinjing ma when

she put on another piece of clothing. and the pair walked out of this airport together. the two spotted getting into a white infinity with new york license plates driven by a man. now, the fbi is trying to get better images of the suspects, their car and those license plates. investigators say it doesn't appear the girl was forced to leave this airport, but they still have a lot of concern, whit. >> kenneth, authorities also saying the missing girl and suspect may have met before. >> reporter: that's right, whit. another twist, investigators say while the tour group was in new york city just a few days ago, that a witness may have seen the same female suspect hand the girl food after she approached her. investigators say they don't believe this woman or this girl, this young girl has any family here in the u.s. so there's still a lot of unanswered questions. >> hoping for good news to come. kenneth moton in washington, thank you. amy. whit, now to the manhunt

under way for the killer of that prominent houston doctor. overnight, police were searching the doctor's home after they were alerted to a possible sighting of joseph pappas as we learn new details about his past and marcus moore is there in houston. marcus, we're also learning what he did just days before the shooting. >> reporter: well, amy, that's right. records show that pappas gave this home away to a family friend before the murder and this morning, the search for that 62-year-old suspect is still on. overnight, a massive manhunt under way for joseph pappas, the man accused of gunning down prominent cardiologist dr. mark hausknecht on his bike in broad daylight. law enforcement swarming this houston area home which was owned by pappas after a neighbor thought they saw him. when police arrived they found the gate open but no one home. just days before the murder pappas had deeded the home which he lived in for decades to a woman from ohio, telling her he had terminal cancer.

they believe he killed hausknecht who once treated ex-president george h.w. bush. >> the suspect's mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery. >> the suspect's mother was a patient of the doctor and died during surgery over 20 years ago. >> reporter: investigators have been on the hunt for pappas. a man who spent three decades in law enforcement, most recently serving as a reserve officer in reserve county. investigators say they drew his attention after they received a tip the day after the murder and video appeared to show a man who is pappas following the 65-year-old doctor on a bicycle before allegedly passing hausknecht and opening fire. then riding away on the ten-speed bike police believe he's been using to get around ever since. and authorities have been canvassing this entire city for any sign of pappas, who police have described as armed and dangerous, but also suicidal. he's been missing now for several days. cecilia. >> okay, marcus, thank you. we want to turn to les

learning, reconciliation and forgiveness? it will be curious how they move forward. >> absolutely. eva, thank you. now to colorado where a deadly police shooting is facing scrutiny. police killing a vietnam veteran in his own home just moments after he had saved his grandn from an intruder, but the officer mistaking the veteran for a threat. now the police chief is defending how his officer handled the situation. abc's clayton sandell has the very latest. >> reporter: aurora's police chief says the scene was chaotic and violent, frantic. 911 calls at 1:30 monday morning. >> he's hurting this little baby. he kicked in their door. he's on some kind of drug. >> reporter: that intruder dajon harper came barging into the house that he shared with his parents and two kids. >> i just immediately shot into the bathroom to find this naked guy soaking wet on his back with his feet out of the tub choking my son biting his left ear. >> reporter: his father, 73-year-old gary black grabs a gun and opens fire killing

harper but seconds later as police arrive -- >> cruiser 13, we got shots fired. >> reporter: one officer mistakenly shoots black. >> officers continue to give at least five commands to mr. black to drop the gun and to show his hands. he begins to raise the flashlight toward the officer and still has the gun in the other hand and it was at that time that my officer fired four rounds causing mr. black to fall to the ground. >> reporter: black's family insists police did not give the decorated vietnam veteran enough time to comply. >> do you think the aurora screwed up? >> absolutely. he lived a hero, he died a hero. i would be dead, my daughter would be dead, my mom, we'd all be dead if it wasn't for him. >> reporter: the police chief says black was hard of hearing and may never have heard orders to drop his gun. there is body camera footage of this shooting but the family

mollie tibbetts vanished more than two weeks ago and now her family is speaking out raising the reward for her safe return. we will hear from her boyfriend in just a moment. first abc's alex perez is in brooklyn, iowa, with the latest on the case. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. this is a small town tight knit and just about everywhere you look you see posters with mollie's picture and people are desperate for answers and hope this increased reward will get someone to step forward. more than two weeks after she disappeared after a jog, her family is begging for help. >> we believe mollie is still alive and if someone has abducted here we are pleading with you to please release her. >> reporter: the police have remained tight-lipped about the investigation and the family says they understand why. >> they are not sharing information with us because they don't need to share information with someone who might be implicated in this. >> reporter: tibbetts was last seen going for a jog in this sleepy iowa town on july 18th.

the 20-year-old was spending the summer at her boyfriend dalton jack's apartment. jack, not considered a suspect was over 100 miles away working a construction job the day she disappeared. the two were planning to leave for the dominican republic yesterday for his brother's wedding. last week, her mother telling abc news that wedding meant the world to tibbettibbets. >> i'm thinking that august, that's -- august 2nd deadline where i want to get that little girl and dalton and blake and ali on a plane and, you know, go and joy yourselves in the dominican. i can't stand these people are having a wedding and she's supposed to be the maid of honor. >> reporter: jack's brother suggesting he propose to tibbetts his high school sweetheart at the ceremony which has now been postponed. the investigation is ongoing with authorities focusing on her fitbit which could pinpoint her movements. authorities say they have received about 200 tips that they are following up on and they have about 40 investigators working on this case every day. cecilia.

>> okay, alex, thank you. and joining us now is mollie's boyfriend dalton jack. dalton, we have been following every word of this story and certainly are thinking about you and mollie's family. we heard mollie's mom say she believes mollie is alive but may have been abducted. what do you think happen? >> i'm not putting a whole lot of speculation on what happened and putting that in the hands of the authorities to let them figure it out. >> you know her best among those who know her best. is there any chance in your mind that she could have left on her own? >> no. >> not at all? >> no. >> you were the last person to hear from her. it was a snapchat message. did it give you any clues about what could have happened to her? >> no, it was just a standard message, picture of her face and caption that didn't really mean a whole lot because we were just talking back and forth on snapchat. and i don't even remember what the caption said, to be honest

with you. >> you were working 100 miles away when mollie went missing and we know investigators ruled you out as a suspect. can you walk us through the last night you heard from mollie. >> that would have been wednesday night before she went jogging. we were just having conversations on all through texts and snapchat and that was about all. seemed like a totally normal night. >> it seemed like a totally normal night. and then she went on a run, right? walk us through what you know about those final moments that we've heard or saw her. >> i don't know a whole lot. the investigators are keeping pretty tight-lipped for good reason, you know, to not compromise the investigation by putting anything out there that doesn't need to be out there. >> dalton, when you -- when people are watching and hearing you right now, you must have a message for them. anyone who might have any idea where mollie is, what would you want to say to them right now? what do they need to know at this moment? >> well, obviously call the tip line in. just try to put yourself in our shoes.

wild animals every year despite the warnings to keep your distance, people are getting up close and personal with these animals dramatically underestimating their strength, especially that guy in this video. you can hear its power and see its size. a bison walking right on the road at yellowstone national park but look closer, a man has gotten out of his car and starts taunting the massive animal. people watching in horror. >> oh, no, oh, no. >> reporter: if that wasn't enough of air close call, he taunts the bison some more. >> oh, god, no, don't. i can't watch. >> reporter: remarkably the man escapes uninjured and begins walking away. the bison loses interest and doesn't turn back. it's a dangerous game. just this june a 59-year-old woman from california was gored by a bison at yellowstone. she was among a crowd that good too close and survived and that same week two other people were attacked by elk.

women over, you know, their pregnan pregnancies are increasing over 40 so it's perfectly normal and something we see a lot in major cities. >> talk to us about the risks of this so-called geriatric pregnancy. >> in obstetrics we draw a line in the sand at the age of 35. it doesn't sound geriatric but medically that's what we use. we know there are some increased risks when women give birth over that age and they run the gamut. pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, preterm labor/birth. you could have a small fetus, chromosomal ab fnormalities and of course, stillbirth. that doesn't mean that's super high by does go up over the age of 35. some 40-year-olds are healthier than when they were 30. so vitality and health today are making it possible and more common to have a totally healthy
