fire behavior and large r incidenteporte which it firefighters here are dreading since napa county already has strike teams in redding for the carr fire, and in lake county for the mendocino complex fire. it means fewer firefighters here at home. >> we do have re sources committed on major incidents right now. as far as locally, the fire stations are staffed and the firemen and women are ready to respond. >> they send five engines each time a strike team is dispatched. >> we have locals here covering on engines already gone. >> reporter: the men and women are reminded every day how much hard work goes into fighting a major fire, from the front of the station you can still see the scars left behind by last year's atlas fire. that knowledge will come in handy since two of 25's engines

are scheduled to leave in a couple of days to help relieve one of the strike teams at the carr fire. >> we prepare if there are early spring and summer with readiness drills and stuff to keep people mentally focused on what could happen. >> reporter: firefighter flores will be among them that will load up sunday night or monday morning to head out for the carr fire. they'll relieve two of the engines already up there. do they have enough firefighters in napa to staff this? they say they do. all the fire stations are staffed. they would rather not have any big incidents or go help other counties because they are spread thin currently themselves. live in napa, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you. for more on the fire danger facing the bay area right now, let's bring in abc 7 news meteorologist spencer christian. spencer this -- this is problematic all over california. >> it really is, larry. especially here in the northern and central parts of the state where we have so many major

fires burning at once. now, this red flag warning is in effect until 11:00 p.m. tomorrow for a wide area, including the areas where the fires are burning right now to our north and over to the east into the sierra and the sierra ridge and foothills. the ridge is -- the gusts will be generally 25 to 35 miles per hour in those areas due north of the bay area. in the east area of the sierra the gusts will be up to 65 miles per hour with dangerously low relative humidity. looking at the ranch fire and the river fire, you can see that it's about 90 degrees in both locations and the wind is gusting to 27 miles per hour. and we expect wind gusts to just taper off a little bit during the overnight hours, and perhaps pick up again to the levels wrer seeing today by midday tomorrow. so the red flag warning is in effect for an expansive area. and i guess you want to know what that means to the average person, right? >> yeah, absolutely which we hear about the red flag warnings all the time. how does that affect us, really? >> in terms of weather

conditions, it means it's hot and dry and we have gusty winds. we have weather conditions that can spread fires rapidly if they start. because it's so hot and dry, fires can start more easily. what we need to do is be vigilant if we live in an area where there's a lot of dry vegetation. there are things we can obviously avoid doing, like campfires, don't start campfires or work with mechanical equipment that could trigger a spark, like lawn mowers or my kind of equipment that would trigger a spark that would start a fire in a dry area. >> thank you, spencer. take a look at the other fires burning, carr fire has burned 131,000 acres, 39% contained. cranston fire, 13,000 acres, almost fully contained, the whaleback fire is now 70% contained. the ferguson fire burning on the outskirts of yosemite that has spread to 73,000 acres, 41%

contained. park officials hope to open yosemite valley to visitors today. that has been pushed back until next week. yosemite valley is not at risk. the closure is because firefighters need the roadways so they can respond to the fire. >> even as residents begin to return to neighborhoods that have been devastated by the carr fire, we're getting new glimpses of harrowing escapes. >> kristen sze is here with one redding resident's video as he barely got out of harm's way. >> this is judah gowan's harrowing story. the carr fire was barrelling down on his neighborhood, minutes to escape. his wife and two little girls were in a separate car ahead of him. this is what their experience looked like. >> oh, jesus. jesus, jesus. >> it looks like hell. it felt like hell. like, it was so hot. and you could barely breathe

faster. >> why is manned space flight so important to us? >> it's important because there are things that you can do with -- like on the moon, the apollo pa apollo astronauts you cannot do. on the space station, we want to do research on biology -- human biology, and also biology of bacteria and all kinds of other animals. and to have someone actually there to manipulate the experimentation is really important. >> there are real life use cases that will be done? >> absolutely. not only the experiments, but also the spinoff that happens from the technology we actually use to put in orbit. so spinoff is something people don't count very often, but it's a huge part of what happens at nasa. >> now, endeavor was the last space shuttle flown by nasa, decommissioned in 20u 20. i still remember seeing the scenes in los angeles trying to do a mini parade, 2012, i think i said '02. was it just too expensive to

keep building shuttles like that? >> those shuttles were really old. they're very expensive to build. and, again, competition with private and commercial, things will hopefully make that somewhat cheaper. but also the -- going into space is very dangerous. and space wants to kill you, basically. and commercial people are going to have to be a little more aware of that. it's much more easy to build spacecraft commercially than with a government organization. >> you led into my next question. i was going to ask about the safety aspects of this when you have these types of partnerships, you think it will be safer than before? >> i think that it might be safer than before. >> why? >> there's a lot less organization.etween theubcly ru

train station. a man in a suit is dragging an unconscious person off the train and leaving him at a station in long beach. he pulls the person's pants up, goes back in the train, grabs items and places them outside. the man recording the incident had a few words for the man in the suit moments after. >> he could have had a seizure. in white boy is going to drag him off the train so he don't miss his ride. >> the man in the suit responds bysaying, quote, there are a lot of people on this train that want to get home. the man who suffered the seizure was taken to the hospital. his condition is unknown. >> smith college in massachusetts is bringing in an outside investigator to review an incident in which campus police approached a black student who was suspected of being, quote, out of place. >> it's just not okay. i needed to speak up. >> the student became emotional when she talked about the incident.

if you drive, you know waiting at the dmv is frustrating, it's painful at times. the state is trying to ease the burden by expanding weekend service. abc 7 news reporter matt keller has the details. >> what would a dmv without a line? this one in san jose went around the building. >> i woke up very early, but i'm still last in line. >> jenny is here to get her ambulance driver certificate. >> you're my lucky one. >> a dmv worker gave her a time stamped green paper to track her how long it takes her to get to the front of the line. >> okay, 8:00. >> the dmv is trying to improve wait times they say is due to the implementation of really id, a new line system and the
