fires burning in lake, mendocino, napa, and shasta counties. he toured the area scorched by the carr fire in shasta county. >> the fire has charred more than 222 square miles and is 44% contained. flames have destroyed more than 1,000 homes since the fire started last month. after meeting with fire officials, the governor issued a warning to us all. >> we got tough times ahead, and no matter how comfortable you feel or how everything looks good, the part of wisdom is to be ready for what we don't know. >> right now a total of 17 wildfires are burning across the state. they include two wildfires that make up the mendocino complex fires that expanded overnight. they have burned a combined 315 square miles in mendocino and lake counties. cal fire says the wildfires have not merged, despite a report yesterday by a strike team and the fires remain about four miles apart. mandatory evacuation orders were

issued yesterday for parts of potter valley, clear lake oaks, and the cal mountain recreation area. firefighters hope to have the fires contained in about a week and a half. relief supplies are on the way for animals impacted by those wildfires. all of it is thanks to a huge response from the north bay community, and you, our abc 7 news viewers. as abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard explains, the effort was launched by one woman impacted by last october's wildfires. >> i can't believe it happened, and that amount of food is going up there. >> palettes and palettes of donated pet food and hay are being loaded on this flat-bed semi headeak aino counties to h animals. >> it's been a full-time job to get this put together, but it's been put together, it's on the road, and the animals will be fed. >> last weekend barbara told abc 7 news about her idea to help victims after seeing so many horrific images on tv from the

fires in redding and so many stranded horses and pets. she put out the call for donations on facebook and the response was amazing. >> we have about 18 tons of pet food. and hay. that is going up there. i really want to thank everyone, channel 7 viewers, community of sonoma, all of our friends, everyone who's donated. >> a store is pitching in, donating pet supplies and hay. it's also collected $3,000 in cash donations. >> it's been wonderful, and i'm so glad we could contribute. my heart goes out to the people, but i'm so glad we can donate. >> reporter: this truck is heading to shasta county to help victims and their animals kbaktded kbakt impacted by the carr fire. we have more than food, even tois for pets. barbara is helping others the way she was helped after the north bay wildfires destroyed her horse barn and riding school. >> i didn't know my horses were alive for four days.

i can't pay back the people that helped me, but i can pay it forward. >> reporter: she's paying it forward in a big way by telling fire victims sonoma county cares. abc 7 news. >> such big hearts. today apple ceo tim cook made a pledge of support to fire victims tweeting, "we are saddened by the loss of life and devastation in the california wildfires. apple will be donated to relief efforts to help those in need. we thank the brave firefighters working so hard and risking their lives to contain the flames." a third massive wildfire burning now for 23 days jumped highway 41 yesterday, entering yosemite national park and forcing the evacuation of all nonessential workers from yosemite valley. crews downgraded containment to 36% and the fire grew by 3,500 acres to 126 square miles. yosemite national park says yosemite will remain closed to all visitors through tomorrow

night due to unhealthy smoke and firefighting operations. the weather is a big factor. let's check in with mike nicco with a look at the conditions. mike? >> hi, everybody. unfortunately what came to fruition is what we talked about yesterday. the winds did pick up, the humidity levels did a lot of t jeopardy. you could see all that area in red from the sierra, up towards shasta and all the way down into mendocino counties we have a high fire danger through the evening as winds gust up to 65 miles per hour in the sierra, about 25 to 35 in the higher elevations around mendocino, and that's why we could have rapid irregular fires spreading due to this. now, let's take a look at what's going on as far as our current conditions and we have wind gusts up to 27 miles per hour, a little better in the ranch fire, but look at the temperatures in the mid 80s and humidity in the 20s. see the green right there? that is smoke that live doppler 7 is picking up. that's how thick it is, but notice the winds do start to

taper, so we do have some good news for a couple of days before another heat wave. more on that coming up. here's deon. >> thanks. now a grass fire in pittsburgh this morning spread to a structure setting it on fire. take a look at this video, all that smoke in the air. the fire broke out on industry road at harbor street. firefighters managed to keep the fire from spreading further. the cause is still under investigation. abc 7 news is, of course, staying on top of the wildfires. you can visit abc7news.com for all the updates or download the abc 7 news app to get those alerts directly to your phone. activists and survivors of gun violence gathered today for a demonstration against the nra. among those who marched, students and parents from florida's marjorie stoneman douglas high school. >> reporter: outside of the national rifle association's virginia headquarters, demonstrators calling out the gun lobby for its role in

blocking gun control legislation and continued defense of unrestricted sales of the ar-15 and similar weapons. >> united we will overcome a russian-funded nra that puts profit before life, forgets the meaning of well regulated, and most of all threatens our democracy. >> reporter: organizers with a number of demands, including banning high capacity magazines, the institution of universal background checks, revoking the nonprofit status of the nra, and calling for more research on gun violence and its impact on public health. among the demonstrators, survivors of the marjorie stoneman douglas high school shooting, 17 students and staff members gunned down there last february. >> i will never have the kind of fear and anxiety that my daughter did running down the hall at school with an ar-15 at her back. i do not care what the gun lobby thinks of me. we will break that grip on legislators and we will win. >> reporter: the nra also being targeted by andrew cuomo.

the gun lobby claiming in a lawsuit it's suffering grave financial harm saying cuomo and state regulators made it clear to banks and insurers that it is bad business to do business with the nra. the lawsuit asking the court to have the cuomo administration cease its anti-nra practices. for his part, cuomo said friday the state is filing a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, adding, if i could have put the nra out of business, i would have done it 20 years ago. abc news, new york. new details now in last night's double stabbing on a b.a.r.t. train at the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. b.a.r.t. police say 27-year-old solomon espinosa is a transient that stas somewhere in oakland. he used a box cutter to slash two passengers on a train last night. both victims survived. solomon did not know him. two b.a.r.t. officers and two oakland officers at the station at the time and addressed the

issue of another violent attack on the system. >> safety is a top priority, we're deploying officers on overtime to be a much more visible presence throughout the system. >> the attack happened after a memorial for nia wilson, who was stabbed to death at the same station july 22nd. happening right now, if you are taking b.a.r.t. this weekend, you may be in for a delay. rail replacement work is under way this weekend between the west oakland and 19th street stations and the west oakland and lake merritt station. ac transit is running free shuttle buses from the 19th street station. b.a.r.t. says the bus trip between stations should take about ten to 15 minutes. beginning today, the dmv expanded saturday service to 14 more offices in an effort to alleviate long waits. a total of 60 offices across the state are now opened on saturdays and as you can see in this video shot by justin mendoza, there are lines even on the weekend.

we have one to two fires a day and when you respond together and you put your lives on the line, you do have to surround yourself with experts. and for us the expert in gas and electric is pg&e. we run about 2,500/2,800 fire calls a year and on almost every one of those calls pg&e is responding to that call as well. and so when we show up to a fire and pg&e shows up with us it makes a tremendous team during a moment of crisis.

i rely on them, the firefighters in this department rely on them, and so we have to practice safety everyday. utilizing pg&e's talent and expertise in that area trains our firefighters on the gas or electric aspect of a fire and when we have an emergency situation we are going to be much more skilled and prepared to mitigate that emergency for all concerned. the things we do every single day that puts ourselves in harm's way, and to have a partner that is so skilled at what they do is indispensable, and i couldn't ask for a better partner.

hundreds of residents practiced evacuating their homes in case a wildfire gets too close. abc 7 was in sleepy hollow after reverse 911 calls went out with instructions to evacuate. text messages from alert marin also urged people to follow escape routes. today's exercise included tips on being prepared before a wildfire starts. >> i think it's very useful, because we all need these reminders of what we actually have to take the time to do. >> and we need to be prepared, so our fire protection district is educating us on how to create defensible space around our homes, how to be ready to go if we need to go. >> sleepy hollow residents even saw images simulating how a wildfire would move if it broke out near their homes. we're all encouraged to have emergency kits in the event of a

forecast with mike nicco. >> that's awesome. hi, everybody, let's open up the weather window and show you what's going on outside. look how clear the air is from emeryville towards the coast. clean of fog. sure, a little hazy, but not bad compared to yesterday. sunny, slight cooling trend for sunday. the smoke is bringing the minor cooling. it's going to stay to the north and also to the east and we'll have an inland heat wave beginning monday. here's a look at walnut creek, which we couldn't see most of the week, so gives you an idea how fast the breezes are and how they are blowing off the east, which is great for us, but look at the explosion in the flames that created this smoke this afternoon in the mendocino complex fires. also as you look down towards the ferguson fire, so, unfortunately, that wind was great for us, but pushed the poor air quality and all the red from the oregon border and into oregon down into the grapevine, even some of it in yosemite.

look at that, as bad as it can get. hazardous, our highest level and that's the case again tomorrow. we're going to have good to moderate air quality like we have right now. if you go out on the bay, maybe watch the sunset or watch across the golden gate bridge, it's going to be a breezy one with winds 30, 35 miles per hour. if you're going to the game, it starts in about 40 minutes, 45, 6:05, 69 degrees. it's starting early because of the fireworks at 10:00. it will be 61. oh, man, look at that. figure santa cruz is going to be busy on a sunny weekend. we're going to drop from the 60s at the coast, mainly the 80s around the bay and inland at 6:00. down to the 50s, 60s, 70s at 8:00 and 50s and 60s by midnight. tomorrow's temperatures, you can see a farther push inland of the morning marine layer clouds. from about 52 in santa rosa to 60 in san jose to about 63 in antioch. here's a look at highs tomorrow.
