>> good morning. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 5th. i'm kate larson in for tyler this morning. we'll get a quick look at the weather with frances. >> here's live doppler 7 and the satellite image with a stronger push of those coastal clouds. we'll see some cooler temperatures and right now, we're in the 50s and 60s. san francisco, oakland, half moon bay at 55, but san jose, already 64 degrees. you can see those low clouds over the downtown san francisco with this live shot. and we'll still be in the 50s in the next few hours. by noon, the clouds will pull back to the coast, but it will start to become breezy, even gusty over the hills, possibly

40-mile-per-hour winds in some of the higher elevations. inland temperatures will warm up to the low 90s, around the bay, near 80, and at the coast, low 60s. sun sets at 8:14 and i have a big warm-up to tell you about in the accuweather seven-day forecast, coming up. kate? >> thanks, frances. new overnight, a seventh death has been reported in the battle against the carr fire. it was a pg&e worker. the company tells abc 7 news the crew member was doing restoration work in shasta county when some sort of accident happened. pg&e says it's working with law enforcement to investigate right now. this comes as president trump approves a major disaster declaration. the carr fire has destroyed more than a thousand homes in and around redding. more evacuations near the mendocino complex fires. the fires have erupted in size. the ranch fire, which is the larger of the two, jumped by more than 40,000 acres in a 12-hour period. it has now scorched 181,000 acres. and right now that fire is 22% contained. the river fire, which is

threatening nearby lake county, grew by about 2,500 acres. that's now 50% contained. evacuation orders are now in effect for three counties with the flames headed towards colusa county. combined, the fires have burned more than 229,000 acres, making them the largest in the state. we're posting the evacuation orders as they come in. that's on our website, abc7news.com. the ferguson fire is now burning inside part of yosemite national park. smoke is making it hard to breathe and to see. here's reporter vanessa vas consuelos with her sister station in san francisco. >> reporter: brake lights along highway 41 may be a typical sight during yosemite's peak season, but this time they don't belong to tourists eager to see 's inic t backurning doing, y have tk slurry on o is to keep cruising. >> reporter: dakota snyder took this video after he was forced to evacuate after flames the

from the ferguson fire jumped highway 41. >> it wasn't long after we made it out the 41 that they announced it had blown over the highway yesterday. >> reporter: snyder and other evacuees are staying with friends until it's safe to drive back to their homes. most of them had their bags packed when pre-evacuations were issued last week. >> the smoke over the last month has been really intense. we've had fires before, we've had evacuations before, but to have this extended period of just this inversion layer of hazardous, unbreathable air, it takes its toll. >> reporter: the lodge is usually sold out of tourists at this time of year. though they're just at 50% occupancy, the assistant manager brett archer says now they can do their part to help the community. >> we're honored to house some of the firefighters and some of the local evacuees from yosemite and some of the surrounding areas. >> reporter: as thick smoke towers over the area, over 3,000 firefighters are working to strengthen containment. >> the ferguson fire is being blamed for two deaths since breaking out more than three weeks ago.

it's burned more than 81,000 acres and at last check, the fire was 35% contained. camp mayder is expected to remain closed for at least another week because of the air quality. a new ten-week session was supposed to begin today. campers impacted by the closure will get a refund and a guaranteed spot at the camp next summer. palo alto police want to find this suspect and victim following a shooting in a safeway parking lot. this is the man detectives believe opened fire on a lexus suv. it happened outside the safeway on middlefield road on friday night. witnesses say he shot at the car during a fight. police also want to find the white lexus the victim apparently drove. officers chased the car, but it sped away. the lexus may have a shattered window. it's not clear if the two people knew each other. b.a.r.t. police are investigating two more attacks. they come two weeks after nia

wilson was killed. the latest incident involves a college student. katie utes has the details. >> it don't make no sense. i think it's because of people using drugs and stuff. >> reporter: why someone would attack a 23 san jose state student trying to go home for the weekend is anyone's guess. the young man says as he tried to transfer trains around 10:00 saturday morning, someone attacked him from behind at the richmond station. >> you don't know what can happen at any time yo, you feel? so you've got to be careful. >> the attacker ran off and the victim called police. >> reporter: paramedics transferred the young man a short distance here to kaiser hospital, where according to his family, he was treated for broken teeth, possibly a broken jaw, and a concussion. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. police are investigating the incident and looking at surveillance images. in another case, cameras did capture shots of this man, 27-year-old salomon espinoza. police say he attacked two men

with a box cutter friday night. the stabbing happened on a richmond bound train as it reached the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station. >> there's no known connection between the suspects and the victims and the motive is unknown at this point. >> police aespinoza ran away and is known to be tr tr oakland area. >> it's a regional issue. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says it's deploying more officers on overtime. if you see espinoza, contact b.a.r.t. police. in the east bay, katie utes, abc 7 news. a young boy is safe following a cliff rescue in half moon bay. the san mateo county sheriff's office shared this video with us. the agency assisted the patrol with the issue. it happened just before 6:00 last night. it's not clear exactly what happened, but we're told the rescue took more than two hours. the san mateo county sheriff's

office tweeted, rest assured, no matter what uniform shows up, we're all here to help. the san jose office workers who scored a $543 million jackpot are apparently taking a little time off to themselves. abc 7 news went to the wells fargo bank branch on branham lane yesterday. it was supposed to be open from 10:00 to 7:00, but this sign on the door said that the branch was in fact closed and it would reopen as soon as possible. 11 employees went in on a mega-millions lottery pool and they won. they claimed the multi-million jackpot last week. after taxes, each person expected to bring home $19 million. so, frances, i feel like i remember, they were going to go back to work, because they loved it. clearly, they're thinking about it. >> yeah, i would change my mind, too. it wouldn't take me that long to figure it out. >> i'd also be happy to take a share of that $543. share it with your coworkers. $19 million is a great. >> i always feel like if i'm

apple ceo tim cook is pledging support to wildfire victims. he tweeted, we are saddened by the loss of life and devastation in the california wildfires. apple will be donating to relief efforts to help those in need. we thank the brave firefighters working so hard and risking their lives to contain the flames. one of the country's biggest stars is also raising must be for north bay wildfire victims. a relief concert was held in sonoma state last night. abc 7 news carlos susedo has the story. >> reporter: country music superstar brad paisley lent his voice to help the thousands of north bay fire victims who lost everything last october, an issue thousands more are currently dealing with. >> i feel like it's maybe more important we do this now and then people will follow suit with each of these things that are sort of ravaging areas now. >> reporter: paisley shared the stage with acclaimed actress and comedian bonnie hunt to bring

some cheer to the crowd, knowing the seriousness of these destructive fires. >> as a community, you have to come together. and that's what's been beautiful to see here. >> reporter: they both have family members who have been on the front lines and know what it's like to be a first responder. more than 2,000 people attended the indoor and outdoor venue here at sonoma state, with all proceeds going to the sonoma county resilience fund. the fund will help with recovery efforts. some in attendance, victims themselves, including the president of sonoma state university. >> i woke up and our house was already on fire. my husband and i ran for our lives. >> reporter: but thanks to santa rosa firefighter and now friend, tony neil, who helped save their lives, even hours after losing his own home. >> it really makes you think about what you had and what you lost. >> reporter: their message for the victims of the ongoing fires, be strong. >> we're resilient. and we will come back. >> reporter: a community banning

together through song and laughter, knowing that they're not alone. at sonoma state, carlos salcedo, abc 7 news. >> hundreds of marin county residents practiced evacuating their homes in case a wildfire gets too close. abc 7 was in sleepy hollow after reverse 911 calls went out with messages to evacuate. text messages from alert marin urged people to follow escape routes. the exercise included tips on being prepared before a wildfire starts. >> i think it's very useful, because we all need these reminders of what we actually have to take the time to do. >> and we need to be prepared. so, our fire protection district is educating us on how to create defensible space around our homes, how to be ready to go if we need to go. >> sleepy hollow residents also saw images simulating how a wildfire would move if it broke out near their homes.

if you got a speeding ticket in south san francisco recently, you are not alone. police issued more than 70 citations yesterday. it's part of a crackdown that focused on streets where speeding has been a big problem. on average, ticketed drivers were going about 15 miles per hour above the posted speed limit. take a look at what the california highway patrol sees during a traffic stop. this was on interstate 5 in fresno county. an officer got suspicious after stopping a driver for a traffic violation. the dog you see in the picture, that's ch prkp k-9 bruce found t $5 $5,000 worth of cash stashed in two suitcases. the driver said he did not know the money was in the car. he was arrested. a new high-speed b area. business leaders in cupertino ar csiring hyperloop as a way traic hpu get t>> reporter: non-rush hour, it can take 26 minutes by car to drive eight miles from downtown san jose to

cupertino, home to the new spaceship offices at apple park, and double that, one full hour to go by bus. so how do you get across silicon valley faster and smarter? the answer could be a hyperloop. a vehicle propelled by electric propulsion inside a low-power tube at speeds as fast as a commercial jetliner. the idea came up at cupertino's city council meeting. >> if this comes to a realization, it would only take five minutes. >> reporter: andrew walter says hyperloop is one of several ideas to address congestion. busy stevens creek boulevard has an evaluated pass that could house a hyperloop. >> hyperloop within cupertino is not something that would produce a lot of benefits. you need something that would be more of a regional solution. >> reporter: the idea is so new, no one has bothered to crunch the numbers yet, but it's expected a hyperloop could cost

helping to push the marine layer and bring us those breezy conditions. and that's why temperatures are going to come down a little bit today, by a few degrees. so, here's our forecast animation. notice by 7:00, we've got the fog and low clouds. even into parts of the east bay and some valleys, as well. by lunchtime, it does clear back and then this evening should be pleasant tonight, but actually, it's going to be pretty breezy, as well, in the evening, and all the clouds will stay at the coast before they move back in tomorrow morning, again. highs today will range from 60s once again at the coast to low 90s inland. so half moon bay, 62 degrees. san francisco, it's going to be breezy and windy at times, 66. and oakland, 72 degrees for the afternoon game today. lots of sunshine, as well. san jose, 84. some low 90s in some of the interior valleys, like santa rosa, 90, lakeport, ukiah in the low 90s, as well. and antioch, 92 degrees. now, here's a look at antioch, for example, 92 today, but

>> and hay, that is going up there. i really want to thank everyone, channel 7 viewers, the community of sonoma, all of our friends, everyone who has >> reporter: the feed store is pitching in, and has also collected $3,000 in cash donations. >> my heart goes out to the people, but i'm so glad we can donate. this truck is heading to shasta county to help victims and their animals impacted by the carr fire. we have more than just animal feed here. we have water, food, even toys for pets. barbara halford is helping others the way she was helped after the north bay wildfires destroyed her horse barn and riding school. >> i didn't know if my horses were alive for four days. i don't want anybody else to go through what i went through. i can't pay back the people who helped me, but can i pay it forward. >> reporter: she's now paying it forward in a big way by telling fire victims, sonoma county cares. in sonoma, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. berkeley police are bracing for protests and counterprotests

today. they've banned weapons at civic center and aloeny parks in an effort to prevent violence. you're looking at when patriot pray mch in berkeley yesterday. officers arrested more than a dozen people when clashes broke out. the so-called no marxism in america 2 is expected to happen at civic center park counterprotest counterprotests are also expected. venezuela's president dodged an apparent assassination attempt. droned armed with explosives detonated while nicolas maduro was delivering a speech to hundreds of soldiers. [ speaking foreign language ] >> this all played out on live tv. the blast injured several people, but maduro escaped unharmed. he blames far-right factions and also the president of venezuela's neighbor, colombia. president trump returns to new jersey for vacation today. yesterday, he campaigned in ohio, admits some controversy.

he slammed lebron james on twitter, of course, arguably the state's favorite native. and this morning, melania trump is responding. here's abc 7 news reporter elizabe elizabe elizabeth herr. >> reporter: president trump hitting all the usual notes, rousing his base in columbus, ohio. >> america is winning again. we're building their wall. >> reporter: strikingly absent from the president's remarks, his war of words with basketball superstar, lebron james, less than 24 hours before taking the stage, the president tweeting, lebron james was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, don lemon, he made lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do. the president adding, i like mike. an apparent reference to michael jordan. earlier this week, james spoke with cnn's don aut at-risk children he is opening in his hometown of akron. in the interview, james accused the president of using sports to drive people apart. >> he's kind of used sport to

terrell owens loves being in the spotlight, and saturday, he had it all to himself. the former 49er receiver decided to skip the hall of fame induction in canton and hold his own ceremony at the university of tennessee chattanooga. the crowd at his alma mater gave t.o. a huge ovation. there's no doubt t.o. has hall of fame numbers, but it took him three times on the ballot to get voted into the hall. t.o. says he decided not to go to canton because he wanted to take stand against the sports writers, who he says are not in alignment with the mission and core values of the hall of fame. he's the only living inductee to skip the ceremony in canton. >> love you, t.o.! >> love you, too. but i love me more. >> i'm a man of conviction. a man of faith. a man of humility. a man of character and integrity. a man of charisma and

winds pushing the smoke well to our east. in santa rosa, 53 degrees. napa, 57. novato, 52. vacaville and concord at 63 degrees. and it's cloudy over the san jose airport right now. and here are the forecast features, which you can expect today. slightly cooler temperatures and then a warming trend standards on monday and then it's going to be hot inland wednesday through friday, near triple-digits. so, we've got this changing weather pattern, mainly due to this area of low pressure, this cooler air from the gulf of alaska is helping to drive the marine layer and that onshore flow, bringing us us breezier conditions and slightly cooler temperatures. and you can see it with the forecast animation here, even at 7:00 this morning, we'll still see cloud cover over parts of the peninsula, across the bay, and into the east bay, as well. by lunchtime, most everyone under some sunshine, except right at the beaches and at the coast, where we'll see the clouds linger a little bit longer. and then later on tonight, it will start to push back in again after 9:00 and into this

evening. so, here's the visible satellite image from yesterday. notice, the smoke is just blowing almost straight east this time. so in our immediate bay area, we should not be seeing too much haze in the immediate area. and highs today, similar to yesterday, just a little bit cooler. it will be windy at the coast and around the bay today. san francisco, 66. oakland, 72. san jose, 84. some low 90s inland, with like antioch, 92. santa rosa, 90. and we could see some breezy conditions and gusty conditions, especially, in the north bay mountains and, the east bay hills, up to 40-mile-per-hour gusts. so partly cloudy and breezy as the beaches today, low 60s. but santa cruz warming up, getting more sunshine, 76 degrees today. and it's the last day of the adobo festival in milpitas. plenty of sunshine throughout the day, climbing to 80 degrees, and dropping to 71 degrees by
