good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> and good morning. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 5th. i'm kate larsen in for carolyn tyler this morning. we're going to start with a quick look at our weather. we have meteorologist frances dinglasan in for lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. we have a slightly deeper marine layer and a slightly stronger onshore flow. so that's going to do several things, drive temperatures a little bit cooler this morning. it's also pushed the clouds in across the coast and into parts of the bay and into the east bay, as well. most temperatures in the 50s right now, but novato is only 46 degrees. and a few 60s out there, like san jose at 63, clear lake at 65 degrees. here's a beautiful view. sunrise coming up at 6:16. temperatures will be mostly in the 50s again, and we have those clouds spilling into the bay. it will become breezy this afternoon. in fact, gusty over the east bay

hills and north bay mountains, up to 40-mile-per-hour winds. and inland temperatures warming up into the low 90s. up to 80 around the bay and at the coast, low 60s with that strong sea breeze. i'll have your accuweather seven-day forecast and tell you about a big warm-up coming up. >> thanks, frances. new overnight, a seventh death has been reported in the battle against the carr fire. it was a pg&e worker. he was doing some sort of restoration work in shasta county when an accident happened. pg&e says it's working with law enforcement to investigate. this comes as president trump approves a major disaster declaration. the carr fire has now destroyed more than a thousand homes in and around redding. more evacuations near the mendocino complex fire. the fires have erupted in size. the ranch fire, that's the larger of the two fires, jumped by more than 40,000 acres in a 12-hour period. it has now burned 181,000 acres. and right now, that fire is 22%

contained. the river fire, which is threatening lake county, grew by about 2,500 acres, and that is now 50% contained. evacuation orders are now in effect for three counties, with the flames headed towards colusa county. combined, the fires have burned more than 229,000 acres, making them the largest in the stay right now. we are posting the newest evacuation orders as they come in on our website. that's abc7news.com. the ferguson fire is now burning inside part of yosemite national park. smoking is making it hard to breathe and see. >> reporter: brake lights might be a typical sight, but this time they don't belong to tourists eager to see the park's iconic t back bhey've been doing right up to the side of the road, you have the pink slurry on one side and the fire on the right. >> reporter: dakota snyder took this video when he was forced to evacuate after flames from the

ferguson fire jumped highway 41. >> it wasn't long after we made it out the 41 that they announced that it had blown over the highway yesterday. >> reporter: snyder and fellow evacuees are staying with friends until it's safe to drive back to their homes. he said most of them have their bags packed when pre-evacuations were ordered last week. >> the smoke over the last month has been really intense. we've had fires before, we've had evacuations before. but to have this extended period of this inversion lay over hazardous, unbreathable air, it takes its toll. >> reporter: that lodge is usually sold out this time of year. >> we're honored to be able to house some of the firefighters and some of the local evacuees from yosemite and the vou surrounding areas. >> reporter: as thick smoke towers over the area, close to 3,000 firefighters are working to strengthen containment. >> the ferguson fire is being blamed for two deaths since

breaking out more than three weeks ago. it's burned more than 81,000 ret last check, the fire was 31% contained. camp mather is expected to remain closed for at least another week because of the air quality. the sfrauan francisco recreatiod parks department runs the camp near yosemite. campers impacted by the closure will get a refund and a guaranteed spot at the camp next summer. palo alto police want to find the suspect and victim following a shooting in a safeway parking lot. this is the man detectives believe opened fire ones a lexus suv. it happened outside the safeway on middle field road friday night. witnesses say he shot at the car during some sort of fight. police also want to find the white lexus the victim apparently drove. officers chased it, but it sped away. the lexus may have a shattered window and it's not clear if the two people knew each other. b.a.r.t. police are investigating two more apparently random attacks. they come less than two weeks

after nia wilson was killed. the 18-year-old was stabbed to death at the mcarthur station and now the latest incident involves a college student. abc's katie utes has the details. >> it makes no sense. i think it's because of people using drugs and stuff. >> reporter: why someone would attack a 23-year-old san jose state student trying to go home for the weekend is anyone's guess. the young man says as he tried to transfer trains around 10:00 saturday morning, someone attacked him from behind at the richmond station. >> you don't know what can happen, at any time, you feel me? so you've got to just be careful. >> reporter: the attacker ran off and the victim called police. paramedics transferred the young man a short distance here to kizer hospital, where according to his family, he was treated for broken teeth, possibly a broken jaw, and a concussion. b.a.r.t. police are investigating the incident and looking for surveillance images. in another case, cameras did capture shots of this man. 27-year-old solomon espinoza.

b.a.r.t. police say he attacked two men with a box cutter friday night. the stabbing happened on a richmond-bound train, as it reached the macarthur b.a.r.t. station. both men will be okay. >> there's no known connection between the suspect and the victims and the motive is unknown at this time. >> reporter: police say espinoza ran away and is believed to have a transient in the oakland area. >> the homelessness crisis is a regional issue and we're working to address that within b.a.r.t. but again, it is a regional issue. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. says it's deploying more officers on overtime. if you see espinoza, contact baath police. in the east bay, katie utes, abc 7 news. and fortunately, a young boy is safe following a cliff rescue office sred thiideod t chp with the rescue near the ritz carlton in half moon bay. this happened just before 6:00

happened, but we're told the rescue took more than two hours. the san mateo county sheriff's office tweeted, rest assured, no matter what uniform shows up, we are all here to help. the san jose office workers who scored a $543 million jackpot are apparently taking some time to themselves. abc 7 went to the wells fargo bank branch on branham lane yesterday. it was supposed to be open from 10:00 to 7:00, but a sign on the door read that the branch was closed and that it will reopen as soon as possible. 11 employees went in on a mega millions lottery pool and they claimed that multi-million-dollar jackpot just last week. after taxes, each person is expected to get $19 million. sounds good to me. all right, coming up on abc 7 mornings -- ♪ it's the little imperfections ♪ ♪ it's a sudden change in plans ♪ >> for all you country music fans, you probably recognized him as bradpaisy.

carlos s saucedo has the story. >> reporter: country music superstar brad paisley lent his voice to help the thousands of north bay fire victims who lost everything last october, an issue thousands more are currently dealing with. >> i feel like it's maybe more important we do this now and then people will follow suit with each of these things that are sort of ravaging areas now. >> reporter: paisley shared the stage with acclaimed actress and comedian bonnie hunt to bring some cheer to the crowd, knowing the seriousness of these destructive fires. >> as a community, you have to come together and that's what's been beautiful to see here. >> they both have family members on the front lines and know what it's like to be a first responder. oceeds going to the sonoma all county resilience fund. the fund will help with recovery efforts. some in attendance, victims themselves, including the president of sonoma state

university. >> i woke and our house was already on fire. my husband and i ran for our lives. >> reporter: but thanks to santa rosa firefighter and now friend, tony neil, who helped save their lives, even hours after losing his own home. >> it really makes you think about what you have and what you lost. >> reporter: their message for the victims of the ongoing fires, be strong. >> we're resilient. and we will come back. >> reporter: a community banding together through song and laughter, knowing that they're not alone. at sonoma state, carlos saucedo, abc 7 news. >> very cool. all right. so if you got a speeding ticket in south san francisco recently, you are not alone. police issued more than 70 citations yesterday. focused on streets where speeding has been a big problem. on average, ticketed drivers were going about 15 miles per hour above the posted speed limit, so slow down. all right. this.

the california highway patrol seized all of that mup durioney a traffic stop on interstate 5 in fresno county. an officer got suspicious after stopping a driver for a traffic violation. the dog you see in the picture, chp k-9 bruce found about $500,000 in cash stashed in two suitcases. the driver says he didn't know the money was in the car. he was arrested, though. all right. a new high-speed transportation system could be coming to the bay area. business and civic leaders in cupertino are considering hyperloop as a way to address traffic and help you get to work faster abc 7 news reporter david louis has rorur no car to drive eight miles from downtown san jose to cupertino and double that, one full hour to go by bus. get acrn valley faster and smarter? the answer could be a hyperloop.

a vehicle carried by electric propulsion about as fast as a commercial jetliner. the potential benefit came up at cupertino's city council meeting. >> if this comes to a realization, it would only take five minutes. >> reporter: andrew walter says hyperloop is one of several ideas to address congestion. he's board share of the cupertino chamb chamb >> it needs to be broader than just cupertino. hyperloop within cupertino is obviously not something that would produce a lot of benefit. you need something that would be more of a regional solution. >> reporter: the idea is so new, biionsf expected to cost thinking about private/public partnership. hyperloop one is the only company that has biltduilt a wog

hyperloop system. >> the most optimistic sense would be in the neighborhood of five to eight years. >> reporter: it would also entail brainstorming with neighboring cities. david liouis abc 7 news. good sunday morning. i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan. live doppler 7 and the satellite image showing us the push of the marine clouds into the bay and parts of the east bay. gray skies over the south bay, as well. and we've been talking about all of those fires. really hazardous smoke levels. an air quality alert through the central valleys due to the fires. if you have a trip planned there, you may want to consider canceling it. winds are calm in light in sars. san francisco, 9 miles an hour. but it will get very breezy this afternoon. windy and gusty. here's a look from our roof kurnld degrees, oakland, 57. now check out this pretty shot we're looking from the east bay

hills towards mt. diablo. so not as much haze today, because all the winds are coming from the coast and they're pushing all the smoke east. so we shouldn't see as much haze in the immediate bay area this afternoon. right new in santa rosa, it's 52. napa, 57. but novato, pretty cool at 46 degrees. low 60s right now through vacaville and concord. and from suto tower from san francisco, we are looking at those low clouds right now, still pushing into the bay at this point. so we have slightly cooler temperatures today, but then a warming trend standards tomorrow and then it really kicks into gear, hot inland temperatures wednesday through friday, near triple-digits in some of our warmest locations. now, the cooldown is slightly due to this area of low pressure. and as this circulates and drops a little bit south, it breaks down some of the high pressure we've seen in the inland areas. andonc the onshore flow and thicken the marine layer a little bit. now, in san francisco, temperatures don't climb too

much. we're going to start off in the 50s and we'll stay there during the morning hours, only climbing to the mid-60s by this afternoon. and we'll get more sunshine, the closer you are to the bay, downtown. san francisco getting up to 66 degrees. but along the coast and golden gate park, breezy and cooler there. oakland, 72 for the a's game today. san jose, 74, plenty of sunshine. and some low 90s inland once again. overnight lows will drop into the 50s, especially in santa rosa and napa, cooler there, low 50s. and we'll see that fog push in across the golden gate bridge ito parts of the east bay. now, here is the warm-up i was talking about. for example, in antioch, that's one of the hottest locations in the bay area. today we're at 92, but notice on wednesday, thursday, and friday, that's when we'll see the triple-digit heat. and then it will start to drop into next weekend. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. so we've got breezy and gusty

now to the housing market crunch. many of you asking yourselves whether to buy or not to buy. abc news reporter rebecca jarvis has more on how to answer that very tough question. >> reporter: with home prices as record highs in much of the country, rising mortgage rates and sweeping changes to the tax law, answering the question, should i rent or buy, has rarely been trickier. >> you might offer, say, $300,000 for the home, but if somebody else comes in at $320,000, your offer could escalate up to say, $320,000. >> which makes sure that nobody else is going to come in and outbid you. >> it removes some of the risk of, oh, did i overbid? >> reporter: sales of existing and newly built homes fell in june, as did mortgage applications.ag houses for sale has driven up values and priced out in would-be buyers. and experts say, if you do want to buy iprepared for bidding wa. but depending on where you live, it might not make sense to own.

good morning, north bay. let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> hope you're having a good start to your sunday. thanks for joining us. i'm kate larsen in for carolyn tyler this morning. we'll start this half hour with a look at weather. here's meteorologist frances dinglasan. good morning, frances. >> good morning. we have more cloud cover. you can see that here with live doppler 7 and the satellite image. and we have clouds coming in from the coast, into the bay, and even into parts of the east bay. you can see that here with this live shot from this east bay camera, looking south.

so the clouds are still pushing inland, but in the next few hours, it will reverse course, pull back to the coast, and we'll see lots of sunshine. so during the next hour, most temperatures still in the 70s. it will become breezy this afternoon. and even gusty over the hills, up to 35 to 40-mile-per-hour winds in the east bay hills and north bay mountains. inland temperatures warming up to the low 90s, around the bay, hitting near 80 degrees for the warmest spots. and at the coast, the sea breeze will keep everything in the low 60s this afternoon. sun sets at 8:14. tomorrow, things are changing. we're going to start a warm-up that's going to push into the middle of the week, where we'll see triple-digit heat. and i'll have details, coming up. >> thanks, frances. crews in shasta county continue to battle the carr fire. unfortunately this morning, we've learned that a secht pers -- seventh person has died. it was a pg&e worker. he was doing restoration work when some sort of accident happened.

pg&e says it is working with law enforcement to investigate right now. this comes as president trump approves a major disaster declaration. the carr fire has destroyed a thousand homes in and around redding. the mendocino complex fires have forced more people out of their homes. new evacuation orders went to people living in the path of the fires burning near clear lake. the fires threatened communities in three different counties. officials say the mendocino complex is the largest group of fires burning in california right now. flames have charred more than 229,000 acres. relief supplies are on the way for animals impacted by the wildfires in lake and shasta county. a woman impacted by the north bay wildfires launched the drive. and her community as well as a lot of abc 7 viewers helped make it a huge success. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story. >> it started off really start and came to this, which i'm very proud of her. >> reporter: tim halfort praising his wife, barbara, for helping make all of this happen. pallets and pallets of donated

pet food and lots of hay are being loaded up on this flatbed semi, headed to lake and mendocino counties to help fire evacuees and their animals. >> it became a full-time job all week to get this put together. but it's been put together, it's on the road, and those animals will be fed. >> reporter: last weekend, volunteer barbara halford told abc 7 news about her idea to help victims after seeing so many horrific images on tv from the fires in redding and so many stranded horses and pets. she put out the call for donations on facebook and the response was amazing. >> we have about 18 tons of pet food. >> wow. >> and hay, that is going up there. i really want to thank everyone, >> rter:7 views, tnityyo w dat supplies and hay, and has also collected $3,000 in cash donation. >> my heart goes out to the

people, but i'm so glad we can donate. this truck is heading to shasta county to help victims and their animals impacted by the carr fire. we have more than just animal feed here. we have water, food, even toys for pets. barbara halford is helping others the way she was helped after the north bay wildfires destroyed her horse barn and riding school. >> i didn't know if my horses were alive for four days. i don't want anybody else to go through what i went through. i can't pay back the people who helped me, but can i pay it forward. >> reporter: she's now paying it forward in a big way by telling fire victims, sonoma county cares. in sonoma, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. berkeley police are bracing for center and alony parks in an effort to prevent violence. you're looking at when patriot prayer marched in berkeley yesterday. officers arrested more than a dozen people when clashes broke the so-called no marxism in america 2 is expected to happen at civic center park at noon. counterprotests are also

planned. banned objects include things like sticks, poles, pipes, shields, and fireworks. president trump returns to new jersey for vacation today. yesterday, he campaigned in ohio, amid some controversy. he slammed lebron james on twitter, arguably the state's favorite native. and this morning, melania trump is responding. here's abc 7 news reporter elizabeth herr. >> reporter: president trump hitting all the usual notes, rousing his base in columbus, ohio. >> america is winning again. we're building their wall. >> reporter: strikingly absent from the president's remarks, his war of words with basketball superstar, lebron james, less than 24 hours before taking the stage, the president tweeting, lebron james was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, don lemon, he made lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do. the president adding, i like mike. an apparent reference to michael jordan. earlier this week, james spoke

with cnn's don lemon about a school for at-risk children he is opening in his hometown of akron. in the interview, james accused the president of using sports to drive people apart. >> he's kind of used sport to kind of divide us and that's something that i can't relate to. sports has never been something that divides people. it's all been something that brings someone together. >> reporter: and cnn's lemon firing back, criticizing the president's immigration policy, tweeting, who's the real dummy? a man who puts kids in classrooms or one who puts kids in cages? he added, #bebest, a reference to the first lady's anti-bullying campaign. melania trump speaking out, her communications director issuing a statement, praising james, saying it looks like lebron james is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and that the first lady would be open to visiting the i promise school in akron. elizabeth herr, abc w yo

welcome back. you're looking at a live look at the golden gate bridge. you can see the sun is up, the clouds and the fog is lifting a little, covering the top of the bridge. you can see traffic is clear if you want to get across either way, but as frances has been reporting, it is going to stay a little cool and cloudy in san francisco today, which may make this next event maybe a little less fun. don't be surprised if you see a bunch of people at golden gate park today wearing only their underwear. because today, after all, the national underwear day. one group is trying to break the world record for the largest gathering of people in their

>> t.o. was one of eight inductees into the hall of fame class of 2008. that's a look at your morning sports. have a great sunday. now an accuweather update. >> from abc 7 mornings. >> good morning. i'm meteorologist frances dinglasan. live doppler 7 and the satellite image shows us a stronger marine push. we've got the low clouds spilling in and across the bay, all the way into the central part of the state. here's a live shot of the golden gate bridge. you can see those low clouds overhead, some fog along the coast. in san francisco, it's currently 54 degrees. mountain view, 54 as well. san jose, milder at 63 degrees and morgan hill, only 51 right now. this time from the east bay hills, we're checking out those low clouds that have spilled across the bay into parts of the east bay. and the temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, in fact. santa rosa, 58 degrees. but novato is only 48 address. and low 60s through vacaville and also concord. this time we're looking from our

santa cruz camera. you can see that sea breeze, pushing those flags and blowing those flags. so that sea breeze is going to bring us slightly cooler temperatures today. we're just coming down a little bit by a few degrees. and then, things turn around tomorrow. we've got a warming trend that starts on monday and hot inland temperatures near triple-digit heat wednesday, thursday, and friday. so we've got the changes right now due to this area of low pressure in the gulf of alaska. and as this drops, what it helps to do is it helps to increase the sea breeze and deepen the marine layer and that's why our temperatures are coming down. not too much, but by a few degrees. now, i want to show you what it did yesterday. here's a visible satellite image. we had that westerly flow, so all the smoke just headed due east. now, we're going to get -- we're going to see a similar wind pattern today. so we should see less-hazy skies in the bay area today. here's the forecast animation during the 7:00 hour. we still have some low clouds and fog into parts of the east

bay. and even into some of the valleys. and then by lunchtime, everyone under sunshine, expect along the coast and in san francisco, daly city, pescadero. that's where the clouds will linger all day. and 9:00 tonight, it will start to push back in again tonight overnight. a very typical pattern. highs today will range from 60 at the coast with that sea breeze, 10 to 20 miles per hour, even into parts of the bay. and we'll see some low 90s inland. san francisco, warming up to only 66 degrees today. oakland, 72 degrees. san jose, 84 degrees. and look for some low 90s through ukiah, lakeport, santa rosa, and plenty of sunshine as long as you're far away from the coast. at the beaches, though, you will get some sunshine in santa cruz this afternoon. a high of 76 today, down from 78 yesterday. so partly cloudy conditions, breezy as well. you'll still need the sunscreen, because there's a very high uv index. it's also the last day of the santa clara county fair. and here's the day planner. by 11:00 when it opens, it's going to be a sunny start, 75

degrees. a warm-up to the mid-80s. 80 at 7:00. and if you stay as late as 11:00 p.m., it does get cooler and drop down to 67 degrees. overnight lows with the fog cming in from the coast once again, will mainly be in the 50s. cooler, though, in santa rosa and napa, low 50s there. and here's a look at san jose's forecast for the next seven days. we're a little bit above average, but we will be near 90 degrees wednesday, thursday, and friday. so those are the hottest days of the week with the accuweather seven-day forecast. and what that means for inland areas is they'll be near triple-digit heat on wednesday, thursday, friday. around the bay, we'll see some mid-80s during the middle of the week, and then the coast will also warm up to mid- to upper 60s. so today, it's going to be much like yesterday, just a little bit breezy. gustier in the mountains, and so temperatures are a little bit cooler with that stronger marine layer. >> and yesterday, i was in the wine country to warm up, it was
