>> reporter: new evacuations in wildfire-weary california. the mendocino complex fire exploding to more than 250,000 acres, becoming the fifth largest blaze in state history. this man with a bucket of water desperately trying to save his home as the flames close in. that fire destroying at least 130 structures. >> every ember lights a spot fire. thus creating huge problems for us. >> reporter: more than 15,000 firefighters working tirelessly, as 18 wildfires burn statewide, including the carr fire, which officials say has potentially claimed another life. a utility worker killed in what's being called an accident. firefighters say they are making progress containing these fires, but with these hot, dry conditions expected to continue this week, the threat is still far from over. marci gonzalez, abc news,

idyllwild, california. it's not just in california. states in the northwest are also battling wildfires. >> for more on the forecast, let's go to accuweather's paul williams. >> good morning, kendis, maggie. we're expecting the dry heat to stick around with sweltering conditions with gusty winds causing problems with the fires in the northwest. because it remains hot and breezy there as well. northeast, a different kind of heat, with hot, humid conditions dominant throughout the east coast, bracing for a real-feel of 105 degrees from boston to new york, down to the d.c. area. typical august heat will stick around with thunderstorms around the coast. watch out for spotty storms throughout portions of iowa, des moines, chicago and minneapolis. we're bracing for a chance of severe storms from moline to chicago, with flooding downpours a part of the mix as well. kendis, maggie? >> paul, thank you. president trump is putting the blame on environmental laws. >> the president was apparently

referring to a 2015 proposal to capture rainwater instead of letting it flow into the ocean. he tweeted this, california wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amounts of readily available water to be properly utilized. it's being diverted into the pacific ocean. so president trump weighing in on the lebron controversy and wildfires. in the meantime, he slammed the russian investigation. >> he said there was nothing illegal about his 2016 meeting with russians and the president acknowledged that the purpose of the meeting was to get dirt on hillary clinton. his legal team is questioning whether any law has been violated.

but some republicans continue to push for the special counsel to be allowed to do his job. >> i believe it's in the best interest of the president and of the united states of america and the american people for that investigation to run the course, for all the truth to come out and for -- i think it's the best thing that can happen for him and the best thing that could happen for the country. obviously, he is annoyed about that investigation continuing to go on because it's about him. >> robert mueller has been negotiating about a possible interview with the president. the investigation has been going on for more than a year and the president has made it clear that he wants to shut it down now. now to a wave of violence in chicago over the weekend. 40 people were shot, 4 killed in just one seven hour period. >> at least one paramedic describes it as a warzone. for some it was a painful reminder of gun violence from years past. here's brad mielke. >> even for a city that has seen so much gun violence, what we

saw this weekend in chicago was an outbreak. about 60 people were shot over the weekend. more than 40 shot on sunday morning alone. at least nine people are dead. i talked to ryan burrow, based in chicago. he said when you scan the list of shootings, you can see the gangs going back and forth. >> a bunch of people standing on a street corner, someone pulls up in a car and opens fire. police rarely solve these murders or shootings for that matter, and then as you continue to look down the media rundown, you'll see a very similar shooting happening a few blocks away and the same number of people involved. >> you can see it, the vast majority of shootings taking place in just a few neighborhoods, and that, he says, is what activists are worried about. they say they're out of sight and out of mind.ensomehow things got even worse.

you'll hear more about the epidemic of violence in chicago on "start here" this morning. check it out on apple podcast or your favorite podcasting app. the ntsb is at the scene of a deadly plane crash in southern california. all five people on board died when the twin-engine cessna crashed into a parking lot near south coast plaza mall in orange county. it slammed into a parked car which was empty at the time. officials say it's a miracle no one on the ground was hurt. the pilot made an emergency call to the nearby john wayne airport before the crash. it was registered to a san francisco-based real estate company. now to a disturbing discovery in new mexico. 11 starving children found in deplorable conditions in a compound. itll started with the search ever a missing 3-year-old boy. erielle reshef has the details. >> reporter: law enforcement officers searching a rural new mexico compound for a missing 3-year-old boy say they did not find that child but instead

discovered 11 other children in deplorable conditions. >> they were dirty. they didn't have clothes that fit them properly. just seeing them walk around like that, it was hard to see. >> reporter: officers say they had been surveilling the compound looking for the child abducted from his mother in georgia last november. authorities decided to issue a search warrant after a georgia investigator forwarded a message in which someone in the compound reportedly said people were starving and needed water. two people were taken in to custody. wahajj was armed with an ar-15 semi-automatic rifle. eventually surrendering to authorities without incident. another man, lucas morton, arrested on harboring a fugitive. the 11 childre

on a restricted part of the river. they abandoned the pursuit for safety reasons. but the suspects were not caught and scotland yard says they did manage to make them change course. a man is alive thanks to officers who pulled him from a burning car. >> they desperately tried to keep the flames out of the passenger compartment using that fire extinguisher there. when the flames wouldn't go out they raced to the other side of the vehicle and dragged a man out. he was unconscious at the time. police say the man did not suffer any burns, but just incredible. moments later that car becoming more engulfed in flames. turning now to the desperate search for the y missing for more than two weeks. >> the fbi is involved in the search for the university of

iowa sophomore who vanished during a jog. here's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: authorities intensifying their search for 20-year-old mollie tibbetts. interviewing residents in and around the town. one of the persons is a man who lives in a trailer home about 500 yards from a pig farm that was searched by investigators more than a week ago. the fbi questioned him friday. he has a criminal past, convicted for stalking and harassment. but he says he's never met mollie or her family, and he has not been named a person of interest. investigators continue to interview others. >> we're all in this together. we're all trying to bring mollie back. >> reporter: tibbetts vanished while out for a run in this rural iowa town two weeks ago. she had been living with her boyfriend for the summer. he was working a construction job 100 miles away when she disappeared. police say he is not a suspect.

at least 20 people were arrested in berkley, california as right wing demonstrators clashed. >> they were outnumbered in a stop the hate rally. police used smoke canisters and rubber bullets after some protesters slashed tires and set dumpsters on fire. officers confiscated dozens of weapons, but there were no reports of serious injuries. >> a similar scene in portland, oregon. the police chief ordering an investigation into the use of force at the far-right rally. the two sides were separated by a wall of cops as you can see there. and police are accused of being heavy-handed against the counterprotesters. in clearwater, florida protesters are demanding justice in the killing of a man killed over a parking space. they marched to where he was gunned down in front of his girlfriend and 5-year-old son. the shooter has not been arrested or charged because of the state's stand your ground law. al sharpton gathered to call for change.

>> how can you have a civilian become the judge and jury over whether somebody should live? that's what this law represents. >> trayvon martin's family also attended the rally along with candidates running for governor. they are promising to get rid of that law. a small plane with five people on board fell from the sky, slamming into an orange county shopping center, and there were no survivors. it broke apart as it slammed into an empty car. no one on the ground was injured. the pilot called in an emergency just moments before the crash. ntsb investigators are examining the scene. the plane was registered to a real estate company in san francisco. two people have died and three others hospitalized from rough waters off grand haven beach.

hampering efforts. this is the second deadly quake in a week to hit that town of lombok. now to the alleged assassination attempt on the president of venezuela. it all happened in a public square as he was speaking live on television. >> the venezuelan government is blaming conspirators in the u.s. and colombia. but there are new questions this morning about whether this was actually an attack in the first place. here is matt gutman. >> reporter: nicolas maduro speaking when chaos erupts. maduro, with his wife by his side looking up. you can see his wife flinching, then the feed cuts out. body guards swarming to protect him. at the sound of an explosion, soldiers and military bands standing at attention breaking ranks and scattering, smoke rising over the city. but maduro unscathed and defiant, hours later claiming this was an assassination attempt by drone.
