so, blessings to her but we begin with dangerous heat hitting both coasts. we're feeling the scorcher here in the east. and out west, triple-digit temperatures are fueling at least 68 large fires right now and ginger zee, of course, is tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you, michael. nearly 267,000 acres burning right now and the fourth largest fire in california state history, that's the mendocino fire, is a complex of fires and you can see some of those stunning images from it. they've got now 15,000 homes threatened. you go to the carr fire and this one has been burning, now took another life over the weekend. that makes it seven in that fire alone. it's burned more than 1,000 structures and homes included there. and it's not just california. oregon state, washington state both have fires, 17 actually combined. large uncontained fires and they

have an excessive heat watch including yakima, northern idaho and excessive heat warnings for much of the desert southwest. guys, here, we're not getting a break with this big ridge either. heat advisories from more than 96 to 100-degree heat indices. >> thank you so much, ginger. hopefully there's relief in sight soon. we move to president trump and a dramatic new admission in the russian investigation. reversing course on previous denials, the president now saying that the purpose of his son's trump tower meeting with russians was to get information on hillary clinton. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is in washington with all the fallout. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. the explanations on this have been shifting since day one and now this admission from the president himself but the real question this morning, what is robert mueller going to do with it? this morning, president trump is bracing for an epic showdown obert elr. his attorney, jay sekulow, says if the special counsel subpoenas the president, they will take the fight all the way to the supreme court. >> if you get a subpoena you

file what's called a motion to quash and we're prepared to handle it in court. >> reporter: it had the president fuming all weekend from a rally in ohio. >> a democrat inspired witch-hunt. >> reporter: to his working vacation at his bedminster golf course where he repeatedly lashd out on twitter. fueling his anger a "washington post" report that says the president is increasingly worried about how the probe could hurt what he calls innocent and decent people, namely, his son don junior for his part in that now infamous trump tower meeting with paul manafort, jared kushner and the russians. the president writing, fake news reporting, a complete fabrication that i am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, donald, had in trump tower. initially, don junior claimed the meeting was about russian adoptions. >> did you tell your father anything about this? >> no. it was such a nothing, there was nothing to tell. >> reporter: but now his clearest admission yet on the true purpose to get dirt on hillary clinton. tweeting, this was a meeting to

get information on an opponent. totally legal and done all the time in politics and it went nowhere. i did not know about it. while the president publicly maintains he did not know about the meeting in advance, sources tell abc news his personal lawyer at the time, michael cohen, says the president did know and before it happened. and it has caught the attention of the special counsel who wants to know what really happened behind closed doors. the president's lawyer jay sekulow telling george there was nothing illegal about it. >> how would that be legal? >> the question is how would it be illegal? what law, statute, rule or regulation has been violated? no one has pointed to one. >> reporter: well, mueller's team has pointed to some. among the things they are investigating, conspiracy to defraud and aiding and abetting. it is illegal for campaigns to accept foreign contributions. the question that mueller will no doubt be asking, is that what happened, george, inside that trump tower meeting? >> a lot of facts to run down. cecilia, thankabramsnddan, l's

wi yesterday's tweet.its remar. the president in that tweet is basically admitting that he misled the country before. >> that's right. and ken starr back with the clinton investigation determined that lying to the public could be in and of itself a ground for impeachment. you have first of all the evolving stories. let's be clear, the idea that a lawyer for the president of the united states is coming forward and saying, hey, you know, i had bad information, as if that happens all the time, that a lawyer for the president gets bad information about a critical -- >> from the president. >> this doesn't happen. you have the evolving statements about was the president involved in writing the initial statement for donald junior to what was the purpose of the meeting. then you have the legal questions and as cecilia points out there are a couple of possible laws here. number one of course is the basic campaign finance violations. did he slos olicit something of value. they're going to have to look to

intent, et cetera, and another is a broader statute which robert mueller has been using in connection with a number of the russians that have been indicted and that is broadly a conspiracy to defraud the united states. and that just means in essence a conspiracy to try to help affect the election in a fraudulent way. >> well, one denial the president is sticking to right now is that he didn't know anything about that trump tower meeting. >> he has to stick to that part because if he says he knew about the meeting, that almost certainly means donald junior lied in front of congress and i think that would almost certainly mean that donald junior would get indicted and that's got to be his number one concern. we can talk about all these we can talk about all these questions of campaign finance the united states. the number one concern right now has to be that statement to congress from don junior that donald trump didn't know about the meeting. >> quickly, another reason he can't or won't meet with mueller. >> yeah, the mueller meeting isn't going to happen. we've talked about this many times. i don't think they'll try to

subpoena him. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. amy. tohasuected assassination on venezuelan president nicolas maduro, drones with explosives going off while he gave a speech. venezuelans are saying co-conspirators from the u.s. were involved but white house officials are denying that. our chief national correspondent matt gutman has all the latest on this story. good morning, matt. >> reporter: hey, good morning. if the suspected coup turns out to be real, it would be the first ever assassination attempt using a drone on a head of state. the venezuelan regime says the alleged attempt was financed by people in miami. the white house is saying, unequivocally, there was no u.s. government involvement at all in whatever happened. this morning, the u.s. is denying it had any role in the apparent assassination attempt on venezuelan president nicolas maduro on saturday. maduro was speaking at a military parade in the capital when suddenly you see his wife flinch, then look up. maduro then looks up. the camera rattles as you hear what appear to be explosions.

within seconds his security team bounces up, shielding him with those bulletproof blankets and hustling him offstage. down below military bands break ranks and scatter. maduro's administration is claiming two drones loaded with two pounds of explosives each were detonated near him. i'm standing alive and victorious ready to continue the battle, he says. the venezuelan government is blaming it on far right factions inside the country which they say collaborated with conspirators in both colombia and the united states. they say the initial investigation shows people living in florida financed the plot but provided no specific evidence. >> i can say unequivocally there is no u.s. government involvement in this at all. >> reporter: the venezuelan government says seven people were injured but no one was killed. there is suspicion it was staged and even the white house suggested it might be a setup

concocted as a pretext to crack down on the socialist regime's opponents. given the stampedes of soldiers we saw, the video of maduro being hustled off stage, it would have to have been an incredibly elaborate hoax. a devastating earthquake in indonesia. the death toll growing. at least 91 killed by the 7.0 quake and still aftershocks and james longman is tracking it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. this was a massive earthquake hitting the indonesian island of lombok on sunday morning. so far we know 91 people have been killed and hundreds more injured with over 20,000 left homeless. it was a magnitude 7 quake and it was shallow, only about six miles underground which caused a lot of damage to poorly constructed buildings. this is the height of the tourist season. millions visit from around the world each year and take a look at these people scrambling to get off this island which felt the tremors.

you can see here hotel guests on neighboring bali, people screaming and running from their rooms. major blackouts have been reported with some hospitals evacuating patients. doctors attending to them in the streets. >> dozens and dozens of aftershocks continue, as well. >> reporter: that's right. there have been over 130 aftershocks, george. thousands remain in emergency shelters. this latest quake comes just a week after another quake killed 16 people. and indonesia sits on the pacific ring of fire, an area of massive seismic activity and people are on edge. >> we've learned about that before. thanks very much. michael. now to a shocking discovery made by police while they were searching for a missing 3-year-old, officers uncovering a rural compound in new mexico where 11 children were living with no food or little food and no water and erielle reshef is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, michael. authorities were searching for that 3-year-old but say what they discovered shocked the conscience of even the most seasoned in law enforcement.

those squallid conditions the e searching for a 3-year-old boy, after new mexico authorities discovered 11 emaciated children. those children ages 1 to 15 living in filth in a tent tucked deep in the desert. >> authorities saying they found no water and kids living in filth deep in the desert. >> these chirldren, they literally looked like starving refugees. >> reporter: the fbi and local agents initially drawn to the makeshift property during their hunt for 39-year-old siraj wahhaj wanted in georgia for abducting his 3-year-old son allegedly. the sheriff sending in tactical teams. the 3-year-old not inside. but his father holed up heavily armed. >> five fully loaded ar magazines, 30 round magazines. he was in possession of an ar assault rifle and four other

handguns. >> reporter: wahhaj eventually surrendering, along with another man identified as lucas morton, arrested for harboring a fugitive. all of the children taken into emergency protective custody. >> our goal is to as quickly as possible get them assessed, cleaned up, fed, everything about it is shocking. >> reporter: wahhaj is being held on a warrant for child abduction. the fbi is leading the search for his 3-year-old son. authorities tell us all of those kids in the compound are related somehow and may have been living there at least two months. just at least two months. they don't know how long. >> horrific. all right, erielle, thank you very much. now to new developments in the desperate search for mollie tibbetts, the 20-year-old iowa college student missing now for more than two weeks. investigators are following hundreds of leads and abc's alex perez has the latest. >> reporter: the search to find mollie tibbetts entering its third week and the reward now

topping $250,000. her parents praying they'll see their daughter again soon. >> you can't give up hope. i mean, i know if it were me that were missing mollie wouldn't give up hope. >> reporter: the 20-year-old missing for 19 days, last spotted running in brooklyn, iowa. her family and friends desperate for answers. >> put yourself in our shoes. you would do anything to get her back and you would just be desperate. >> reporter: on sunday authorities discovering the body of a woman two hours away from where mollie disappeared but while they are investigating the discovery as a suspicious death they have confirmed that the victim is not tibbetts. investigators say they followed up on hundreds of leads and tips from the public and conducted numerous searches on farms in the area. questioning 56-year-old wayne chaney who lives just 500 yards from a pig farm they've searched. he denies knowing mollie. neither he nor anyone else has been named a person of interest. family members believe a tip

in the east temperatures approaching 100 degrees. we have new video showing a tragic plane crash in santa ana, california. see it right there. a small plane with five on board went down in a parking lot on sunday. tragically no one on board survived but no one on the ground was injured. the pilot declared an emergency before the crash. an investigation under way. to demi lovato breaking her silence after that suspected overdose. the star sharing a message on instagram thanking god, her fans and vowing to keep fighting. abc's kayna whitworth joins us from los angeles. the #keepfightingdemi was trending overnight. >> reporter: amy, good morning. an enormous response to an incredibly emotional post by lovato, thanking her family, friends and staff here at ced at cedars-sinai. she said without them she wouldn't be here. ♪ i will be rising from the ground ♪ ♪ like a skyscraper >> reporter: this morning, demi lovato speaking out for the first time since her apparent overdose saying, i want to thank

god for keeping me alive. in a post to her instagram, the post star saying i've learned that this illness is not something that disappears, it is something i must continue to overcome and have not done yet. i now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. >> ems 11, following engine 97. already on the scene, unconscious. >> reporter: this comes nearly two weeks after lovato was treated with narcan following a suspected drug overdose at her los angeles home. >> hang in there, okay, we're on our way. stay with the patient. >> reporter: lovato while hospitalized suffered medical complications but is said to be well enough to leave. on friday "people" magazine reported demi will go straight to an impatient treatment facility after she leaves the hospital. a source saying, it's her choice to go to rehab. this is not anything that can be forced. >> a source tells "people" demi realizes the severity of the situation and she's at a point now where she really wants to get help. ♪ i'm so sorry i'm not sober anymore ♪

>> reporter: this relapse coming eight years after lovato checked into this residential treatment facility for women battling addiction. an experience she shared with our robin roberts. >> i guess my darkest period was going into treatment for that first 48 hours and not having any communication with the outside world. >> reporter: now lovato vowing to keep fighting saying, i look forward to the day where i can say i came out on the other side. many wondering if she would be as transparent about this situation as she has been with her past addiction battles. paula faris is here with the story. >> he's only been doing this since june and says it is disgusting how many grown men are wanting to meet children online. his motivation is to keep his kids and neighborhood kids safe. >> who you here to meet? >> sorry? >> who are you here to meet? >> reporter: a sting operation. >> you didn't come to meet a girl? >> yes. >> reporter: led by a concerned parent who is on a mission. >> i have all the chat logs. i have the chats that you were talking. >> reporter: tony blas, a father of two and a survivor himself, created an interstate citizens group that targets possible predators who prey on teenage girls. the group called team loyalty makes you family consists of blas and his volunteer decoys, mostly moms. they post ads on social media, dating and message apps, even gaming chat rooms claiming to be women in their early 20s. >> as soon as we get someone that responds back, our next message to them is, listen, i either messed up in my age, i pressed the wrong number, i'm really 13, 14, or 14, and we

wait for that. if they continue to talk, we listen and wait for them to make their moves. >> reporter: the men apparently expecting to meet a young girl. instead blas shows up to meet them and streams the encounters on his facebook page. >> what is a 44-year-old out here trying to meet a 15-year-old? >> reporter: when he tries to meet up with a 15-year-old, parents and co-workers recognized 44-year-old high school math teacher jonathan castel and called the police. >> to meet a 15-year-old girl. you think that's right? >> reporter: he has been suspended by the school where he works while they investigate and faces charges for attempting to endanger the welfare of a child. and while many commend blas, some criticize his tactics saying what he's doing is dangerous. >> there's always the potential that the predator could have a weapon or could react in a violent way and not having a sufficiently trained team there to deal with that situation coul violent problems for the team

and/or the suspect, but the community that's nearby as well. >> reporter: but blas insists he's working as a parent, not a vigilante, and says he's proud to spark positive change. >> grab your child's phone, look through their internet. see who they're talking to, you know, see who their friends are because you never know. you never know. >> reporter: now, his methods are controversial. facebook shut down his account for a bit. his youtube account is still down but you cannot argue with his results. his group has only been doing this for two months. he has netted nine men and that teacher who was arrested is expected in court this thursday. >> police approve of what he's doing? >> it depends which law enforcement you talk to. some say they want to help him do it the right way. there are concerns for his safety. you don't know how these perpetrators are going to respond. some are concerned that he could interfere with their undercover operations but good for this dad. >> amazing that many men are out doing that. >> he said it was so easy. it was shockingment. >> thank you very much. now we go to an amazing rescue caught on camera.

back now with that incredible rescue. a 13-year-old girl slipping while rock climbing, trapped for hours, but saved by dozens of rescuers. now she's meeting one of them. abc's gio benitez is here with the story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey michael, good morning. incredibly it was the teen's first time rock climbing outside with an experienced group on a known route but her knee got stuck between two pieces of rock and this morning, she's telling her story right here on "gma." >> female party has her knee wedged between two rocks. >> reporter: a 13-year-old clinging on for dear life after a rock climbing trip with her summer camp in sandstone, minnesota took a turn for the worse. >> i can't believe that your knee is okay. >> reporter: now reuniting with her, the man who helped save her life on firm ground. >> only thing visible to me at the beginning was the top of her thigh and then, of course, just her foot and it was pointed down. >> reporter: scarlet ericson is one lucky teen. you can see her leg trapped over

40 feet from the ground. technical teams from across the region were called in to help. >> i was climbing up and i was -- there's this big rock that i kind of had to get over to get to the top and i gave myself a big boost but then my knee got stuck in one of the cracks. the crack was more of like a v-shape so i just fell down into that. >> reporter: clinton langerud was the first rescuer to make direct contact with scarlett. the team working for 4 1/2 hours to free the teen using the jaws of life, a hammer, even a surprising household item. >> the leg was just so stuck that we couldn't get it to move around and having the soap inside, the dawn dish soap, made that move around a lot more easily. >> reporter: her leg eventually giving way. >> i was so happy that i was out and that i was going to be safe. >> reporter: after only one hour in the hospital, a miracle recovery.

it's a scorcher in the east. out west triple-digit temperatures are fueling dozens of large fires right now and ginger is back with it all. ginger. >> michael, the conditions are just getting worse. the relative humidity down to 4%. this is the mendocino complex fire. the images you're seeing, now what is the fourth largest wildfire in california state history. the carr fire took another life this weekend. another 167,000 acres at least burned. it has burned more than 1,000 homes and destroyed them. then in the pacific northwest, oregon and washington state, not left out. 17 uncontained large wildfires inst.tht usostwe they're fighting hard and fighting the heat as are so many folks. excessive heat watches from northern idaho to warnings all throughout the desert southwest. this will stay in place all the way through the midweek. there is a high temperature gradient, a strong temperature gradient meaning it's cool one place, hot another. that's when you have even worse wildfire conditions.

what's your reaction to all of that pretty harsh reaction? >> yeah, i think for me i think the most important thing for us to do is to acknowledge it and say that the trailer actually hurt people and we understand that. but to also look at the show as a satirical look at what could happen if you are fat shamed, if you are bullied and i really think that, you know, it's about appearances and what happens within our interactions with the appearances, right? so upon first glance the show is something and i think people reacted to that. but really when you get deeper into it it's about something else, which is what every interaction in our lives is really about. >> debby, i know you put out a statement on instagram and said i hope fans will wait and watch the show before passing judgment. what can they expect to see if they do tune in and watch? >> i think that there is an entire spectrum of what it looks like when people have kind of

made eye contact with their damage and what that looks like and how that looks in different people's lives and where we try to find self-assurance and value and validation and kind of allowing that damage to navigate you into moving different areas, i think. once people watch the show and go on the journey with all the characters i really think there's going to be an entire spectrum of things. >> i think the interesting thing about entertainment, we all bring our own histories, our own hurt, our own heartache to anything that we watch, whether that be, you know, a tv show or a piece of art or a song and really the show, i think, is going to be a conversation instigator. >> it already has been. >> it already has been and hasn't even aired. to me any time these issues we are dealing with are discussed rather than swept under the carpet, i think it's really important because we really want to eradicate that shame. >> let's take a look at a clip from "insatiable." >> i felt like he saw me, not

how prevalent this issue is and continues to be, by the way. it's certainly not over. we still have a lot of work to do. >> debby, did you feel that same sense of female empowerment on the set? >> 100%. i mean coming into the show and being able to play a character who's loosely based and strongly inspired by a woman who i respect a lot and have a lot of kind of generational experience, there's a lot of women on the set in every vocation in every feel and in every department that inspired me and encouraged me and getting to know how gorgeous all these women were that were helping hang our light rigs and roles that weren't traditionally for women, this felt like a place where everyone was equally kind of ing. >> i think a lot of that you could feel in the subject matter when you watched the show, the vulnerability that we were able to enact due to the fact that we all felt so comfortable with

"gma investigates" takes a closer look at some of the most popular brands on the market. >> i'm going to call it liquid gold. >> reporter: manuka honey, touted on "the doctors." >> in some cases it's even more powerful than traditional antibiotics. >> reporter: and on "dr. oz." >> this is a secret sauce, manuka honey. >> reporter: as recently as last year kourtney kardashian promoted a skin care line made from manuka. >> i've been using manuka honey for years. >> reporter: manuka honey made mostly in new zealand from the tea tree plant is prized for its healing properties. research shows manuka has up to nine times the germ killing power of regular honey and devotees are paying top dollar for it.

on a 2016 family trip to new zealand. >> it has a little bit stronger taste than american honey, but it was great. >> reporter: she says she's been hooked on the honey ever since and she's not alone. demand for manuka honey exploding. exports to the u.s. nearly tripling last year. raising concerns among new zealand government officials that -- >> the honey being sold was not genuinely authentic new zealand manuka honey. >> reporter: to check to see if it's sold in the u.s. and is authentic, "gma" investigates purchased the same five brands in new york, miami, houston and los angeles. 20 jars in total and sent samples from each jar to labs in new zealand and germany for industry standard authentication tests. james is a chemist and specializes in analyzing honey. >> only two of the five actually have the levels of mgo you would anticipate. >> reporter: mgo is the key ingredient that gives manuka it's germ killing power.

how do we make it at home where it is as delicious but a little bit healthier? >> well, first of all, michael, this is a dream for me. i get to make pad thai with you. this is a bucket list. >> i dreamed about this myself too. >> pad thai is really, really popular. one of the most popular items. this is a way that you can make it at home. it is super simple to make. there's nothing wrong with take-out. we'll start over here. what you want is a really hot pan, a wok would be fine, a little bit of vegetables. a blazing hot pan. >> blazing hot pan. n at'sreat about this dish it's really, really quick to make. >> garlic. >> a little garlic. >> chilies, jalapeno. right. a little bit of green onions and you can really start smelling that right now. we're going to add bean sprouts to it. right? that will give it a nice texture. one of my favorite healthy tips instead of just table sugar, a little bit of coconut sugar. >> break that up in there. >> a little bit of tamarind.

>> tamarind. >> so tamarind has this sort of sweet/sour thing going on. if you don't have it at home i like to sub out powdered iced tea mix. >> really? >> which is insane but it sort of reminds me of the sour flavor of tamarind. does that smell delicious? >> incredible. >> a little fish sauce. >> a little fish sauce. >> fish sauce. now, fish sauce is like a salt substitute. to be honest with you, bury some beneficial phones for a couple of years and how they make fish sauce. yes. but it gives this nuance of flavor. >> okay. >> a little bit of vinegar and this smells like pad thai and we're going to add some tofu. >> do you like tofu? >> let's just throw it in there. >> the reason i ask that is i'm not a massive tofu fan either but i love it in pad thai and it's a great protein substitute. we'll add a little bit of eggs that were just scrambled. you could have scrambled them in the pan as well.

fighting about finances and started attacking their debts one by one. they have been dubbed the super savers. >> i don't want to owe anyone anything ever again. >> reporter: for chris and morgan their journey to cutting over $120,000 in debt in just three years was more about working together as a team. >> we're either going to pay this off or we're going to pay this forever. >> reporter: shortly after their wedding the newlyweds realized they like many other couples were enveloped in debt. from $88,000 in student loans, $29,000 in car debt, 5200 on credit cars and $1,000 on wedding rings, their money woes causing tension between morgan, the saver, and chris, the spender. >> i compromised a little. he compromised a little. we were really just aligning our priorities. >> reporter: so first off they refused to add more debt. >> we didn't use credit cards at

all. >> maybe t he first step we boy >>ut everything but the essentials. >> we cut cable. >> we lowered our internet speed. we really stopped shopping. >> reporter: though they desperately needed a new car, he continued to drive his 15-year-old honda. next, when it came to loans and credit card debt, they used what experts call the snowball method, putting all your money towards paying off your smallest debt while paying the minimum balances for the others. once the smallest debt is repayed, using that extra money to target the next smallest debt. knocking each bill off one by one. the couple also keeping to a strict $40 a week spending allowance. before they knew it, they were debt-free. >> you just have to do the best you can do every day. wake up and make a decision to give it your all. >> reporter: experts say when it

comes to clearing debt, living below your means is key. >> it's going to be uncomfortable. it's not always fun but it's short-term sacrifice for long-term gain. >> it really taught us how to work together on things. >> yeah, we were a team again. >> reporter: now they are debt-free. they gave up a lot. they rented a small affordable apartment instead of buying a home and morgan even cleaned homes during the holidays for some extra cash. >> they really worked so hard. any splurges? >> this is an important component. they did splurge. they did a crossfit membership which was something which would keep them going and that's something good when you're going down debt paydown to find one thing to keep you going and feeling like you're a part of the whole thing. >> a little stress relief right there. i love that snowball method you talked about. explain why it works. >> it works well because psychologically it feels good to wipe debts away. the other great method is called the avalanche method where you attack individual debts but you attack them highest interest rate first because your highest interest rate debt like a credit card costs you the most the longer you keep it. with the avalanche method you
