. a plane falls from the sky in southern california crashing at a busy shopping center and taking five lives from the bay area. the this morning an update from the investigates as ware hearing from those who are feeling tremendous loss. thanks for joining us today. in the last hour the mtsb wrapped up a briefing on the crash and we also learned the names of all five people onboard the sesna that took off

yesterday. the pilot was married and the mother and son hakimi angeles. at buchanan field where that plane originated. >> reporter: scott shepherd is described as an accomplished long time pilot. he was taking four people down to a real estate complex in california. three of the five crash victims worked at this pacific real estate building in danville. >> our whole organization is just in shock and disbelief and our hearts just go out to the families of everyone we lost and everybody in our company. we're just devastated. >> reporter: he says they knew all five of the vic vic vic vic

he was piloting the plane taking his wife laura and the others to a motivational conference in l.a. they had two kids. >> a mom of y kids. i think they're 5 and 7. and i believe they're with family while they were going to a real estate conference. >> reporter: he describes the youngest and oldest victims asss beloved employees. >> nasim is just a joy to around, and an awesome individual, just a huge loss for our company. >> reporter: the plane crashed sunday in a shopping center parking lot in santa ana. no one on the ground was hurt. investigators say the pilot declared an emergency in the air and was given permission to

it kept people stuck on the span for up to four hours. some people desperate to escape the situation they got out of their cars and they started walking. amanda? >> reporter: reggie, after reviewing footage officers tell me that they're looking for a silver or gray sedan or small suv, though they're still investigating the motive behind this morning's deadly attack. lopez's car is totaled but he's alive. he was on the bay bridge at 2:20 when he heard gunshots. >> the guy in the suv hits me and we both turn around and i'm lucky the other cars didn't hit me or hit him. >> reporter: after the crash lopez said he went to check on the passengers in the suv and then realized the severity of the situation. >> when everything stops i try

to see if they were okay and the driver was dead. >> reporter: another passenger also shot and a third suffered injuries from the collision. there was some challenge in the early morning investigation. >> eastbound is pretty much one way leaving city, and for us to secure the scene we had to block all lanes. >> the deadly shooting and subsequent crash happened just before treasure island. countless drivers spent more than four hours on the lower deck. passengers who didn't have the patience gave up and walked back into the city. >> i left home at 4:00 saying the eta would be 20 minutes. >> reporter: others simply didn't have a choice. >> i'm going back to my flower shop and i'm going to be behind, but that's okay. i just feel sorry for the people who passed away and got shot.

news. sharing this feteo at 8:00 a.m. nearly six hours eric writes the east bay bridge backup starts at bush and battery. he goes onto say patience is an understatement for eastbound commuters this morning. and had you had the abc 7 news app we would have sent you a message as soon as we knew about that closure and the ongoing investigation. we were on it very early. now to the latest on the wildfires burning to our north. here are the numbers that we just got in from cal fire on the mendocino complex fires which are the ranch and river fires. as you can see the ranch fire has now burned more than 220,000 acres. it is 21% contained. the river fire is now at 48,663 acres. it is 58% contained. and that means the mendocino complex fires are now the second largest in state history.

now take a look at this map. you can see the latest numbers of the carr fire burning in shasta county. more than 163,000 acres burned and it is 5% contained. nearly 150 specialist and fire management. let's go over to meteorologist mike nico. wow, that is something to hear. the second largest fire in state history. this morning i think we were saying it was the sixth largest. >> can't seem to contain it. it just seems to be getting bigger and bigger. here's the newest outline for both the ranch and river fire. the river fire stayed the same. the ranch fire continues to spread. notice the winds are down just a little bit except over the river fire where our observation is about 2,500 feet. you can still see some wind in

the higher parts up there. and then they'll calm down during the overnight hours and hopefully that will help the firefighters. but definitely the temperatures are going to be an issue. as we ramp up into the 100s and the temperatures will be even warmer for the carr fire firefighters. well over 100 all the way to the weekend. a look otoat our 100 degree temperatures coming up. today the three main roads into yosemite valley have been taken over by firefighters who are working around the clock to keep the flames from advancing anymore. it is only 38% contained. and stay atop any breaking fire updates with our abc 7 news app. you can download it and enable push alerts for immediate notifications. happening today b.a.r.t.

police are responding to the latest attacks on trains. b.a.r.t. could not say how long this heightened presence is going to last or how much it'll cost. riders have expressed fears b.a.r.t. is becoming increasingly unsafe. since april five people have been slashed, one fatally while riding b.a.r.t. and this morning b.a.r.t. police are still searching for the attackers who targeted passengers in two separate incidents late last week. the most recent attack happened saturday morning. a 23-year-old san jose state student headed home for the weekend, he was attacked from behind at the richmond station. the victim suffered a concussion, broken teeth and a possible broken jaw. police say the suspect ran away. and police are also looking for this man, solomon ezponaza. he's accused of using box cutters to slash two victims.

this morning? if not i ran a little time lapse onto show you the fog that was trying to come across san francisco, and then the smoke above it and the smoke really looked impressive from our east bay hills camera all during the morning hours. but look how the fog is flowing over the twin peeks and just never really made it. the fact there's such a strong line here is the smoke was above the inversion layer which a stable layer that doesn't mix out, and that's why we're seeing that smoke right there. good news, look at the visible satellite. that it is starting to move a little bit more to the east as we're getting more of a westerly flow. and that northwesterly flow we just talked about is developing. underneath that our air has been very clear all through the morning and is going to continue to be this afternoon. let's talk temperatures. we've got 66 in mountain view, just about 70s elsewhere until you get way out towards danville

and out towards cloverdale. a little fog rolling across the golden gate. we're going to be sunny inland with a warming trend today. good thing at night we'll have a cool night and clouds at the coast. for today we're looking at 97 in antioch, 94 in morgan hill, santa rosa, lake port, mid-90s. and you can see 70s around the bay until you get to san francisco right near 70 and mid-60s along the coast where those clouds will be stubborn. looks pretty quiet right now. if you're exercising just watch out for that warmth. if you're at the beaches there'll be some sunny spots and that small craft advisory starts at noon north of the bay bridge, so it's going to get a little

choppier right out on the bay. notice the temperatures jumping up. we're already in the 70s and 80said around the bay around noon. and mid-60s at midnight on our way pretty much on our way to the mid-50s and mid-60s. i want to show you hector real quick, 145 mile per hour hurricane. by tomorrow all the way through thursday it's going to hit just south of the island and it's going to cause some really squally weather. right now it's going to miss them, but when it goes underneath we'll have about 115 mile per hour winds and it could be an issue. are you a movie pass customer, go see the movies

hollywood legend robert redford says he's retiring from acting. you're looking at the video when president obama presented him with a medal in 2016. he said it'll be his last on-screen roll. redford had first hinted of retiring in 2015.
