it just dropped. >> a crash in the bay area. five people killed in this horrifying crash. cameras captured it in this parking lot. >> thank you for joining us. tonight, crews are cleaning up the wreckage in santa ana and trying to figure out what went wrong in a moment. >> first, live with what we're learning about the victims. >> reporter: hi, dan. what we learned, all five boarded this plane in buchanan field yesterday. they were on their way to a real estate conference in southern california and what happened down there so close to the airport left many in the east bay stunned. >> it's extremely shocking, extremely shocking. >> reporter: those who knew the five people who died in sunday's plane crash in southern california are just starting to

come to their loss. a long time friend of 62-year-old floria hakimi, who posted this photo to her instagram page in concord sunday morning. >> she was so caring and wise and contribution to society. >> reporter: hakimi and her 34-year-old son were both on the cessna piloted by scott shepherd, whose 42-year-old wife, laura was on board. they and a fifth victim, nasim all worked together in the pacific union real estate office. >> we're in disbelief and shock. our hearts go out to families of everybody we lost and everybody in our company, we're devastated by the news. >> reporter: 53-year-old scott shepherd was an experienced

pilot and president and ceo of a san francisco company called category 3 which also owned the plane that went down. scott and laura shepherd lived in danville and are survived by their two young children. besides real estate, floria was a teacher of meditation and >> we believe our energy is federal reserve here, here, there, everywhere. she is everywhere. >> reporter: the shepherds leave behind a young son and daughter. both attended danville elementary school. a spokesperson for the unified school district told me this afternoon they are making plans to both support the family and bring in counselors for staff and students when school starts next week. laura anthony, abc7 news. >> thanks very much. there was a sign of trouble before the plane went down in that parking lot. our sister station has the latest. >> ntsb investigators began

collecting evidence in this santa ana parking lot trying to figure out what caused this plane to crash killing all five people on board. >> over the next months we will be gathering information pertaining to the pilot, airplane and -- >> reporter: dashcam shows it nose diving sunday before going down in this busy shopping center parking lot. though it hit several cars, no one on the ground was injured. the pilot declared an emergency however he did not state the nature of the problem. >> reporter: the plane was trying to land at nearby john wayne airport. her car was part of the crash site sunday morning, walking a short ways away as the plane crashed into the pavement. >> you see the plane there and we ran outside to check on the people but unfortunately not much we could do.

>> reporter: she considers it a miracle no one else was injured. >> easily could have gotten hit. scary. >> reporter: crews will comb through wreckage looking for any answers. the preliminary report could be released in five days and final report 12-18 months. abc7 news. our cameras show the usual bay area backup heading over the bridge and nothing compared to this morning when a deadly shooting happened and they were blocked for hours. >> reporter: i spoke to somebody in the medical examiner's office in san francisco. they have not identified the driver shot and killed overnight. we know one passenger has been released from the hospital, the other in fair condition

according to the hospital spokesperson, the shooting was not random. >> reporter: raul says he's lucky to be alive. >> i'm getting headaches, it's like crazy. >> reporter: just before 2:30 this morning he heard the gunshots. >> we both turned around and i'm lucky the other cars didn't hit me or them. >> reporter: he went to check on the driver. the car was stopped and i went to see if the driver was okay. the driver was dead. >> reporter: two passengers inside were also shot. >> one in the arms and the leg. >> i helped him tie a shirt on and called 911. >> reporter: it left drivers deadlocked for about four hours on the deck. showing you the back up on abc7 morning. >> no reason to believe this was

abc7 news reporter david louie is at the airport. >> reporter: we are getting closer and closer to paperless international travel. arriving passengers at san jose are used to clutching onto their passports. instead, customs and border protection agents are using facial by metrics instead to identify people who are landing. unless you fly internationally,

you've probably never seen these lines before. passengers arriving from oversea lining up to get cleared by u.s. customs and border protection. the process is going faster now because they're one of the first to use facial recognition. we time without facial recognition, 29 minutes per passenger and now below 22 minutes. >> reporter: arriving passengers have their photo taken matched to a photo on file from a previous visit from a visa application or passport. >> we're using a customer algorithm to make sure the same person in front of us is the same person that passport was issued to rather than how man being looking visually. >> reporter: if you have an io 10 you are probably used to it. part of it is tied to the limited database it's searching. the algorithm only has to check on the list of people on board
