>> but as you heard from this woman, some are asking what took bart so long. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. bart's new safety and security plan doesn't add more police officers to the system. however, it requires all the existing officers to work longer days and to give up part of their weekends. >> abc 7 news reporter carolyn tyler is in the newsroom with the details on this emergency plan that really puts all hands on deck, carolyn. >> that's right. and there are a number of safety proposals, and some will be presented to the bart board this thursday for approval. but commuters may notice that big change, more police on the ride home tonight. and for the next three or up until now, there has been one bart police officer for every two or three stations, covering the entire system. as of today, you can add in another 20 or so because emergency staffing is under way. officers will now work six days, 12 hours a day on their normal day off they'll spend it instead on the trains and on the

platforms. >> there is a lot of creepy people on there, and they'll approach you. so it would be nice to have more people to make you feel safe. >> the emergency measure comes in the wake of a wave of violent attacks, including the fatal stabbing of nia wilson. this weekend, a san francisco state college student told us he was brutally beaten by a man on the richmond platform. danny benson says he hit me so hard, my glasses flew across the station. benson drew his own sketch of telephone suspect. bart police tell us they are investigating. already, the increased police presence is said to have played a role in recapturing a suspected thief in suspect today after he escaped from bart police. having more officers at every point of the system absolutely helps being at the right place at the right time. >> and in addition to boosting visibility, bart's general manager is proposing a series of measures recommending the

transit agency enhance security training, install emergency call boxes at all platforms, and have a more robust system to catch fare evaders. camera surveillance technology would also be upgraded. keith garcia heads the union. >> well, i think those things help raise perceived safety, but not actual safety. but if you really want to prevent crime and really want to stop people who are committing crime you have to have a police officer there. >> and keith garcia says bart is down 21 officers from the level they need. keep in mind he is the president of the union. he is hoping contract negotiations that are now under way will include a salary boost to help with recruitment. in the newsroom, carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> all right, carolyn, thank you. two days after a stranger stabbed and killed nia wilson, abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley pressed the president of the bart board for answers on bart security. here is what robert rayburn told

some advice on what you should do if you feel unsafe on bart. in vallejo tonight, police and fire investigators say they're working on what they call a very suspicious house fire that killed three people, including 14-year-old twins early sunday morning. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is live outside the vallejo police department with the latest. wayne? >> good evening, dan. as you'll hear in a moment, vallejo police are now treating this as a triple homicide investigation. they're that serious about it. they were not saying much today. friends over the girls were talking, however. a house with a red tag in front. a burned window in back. on georgia street in vallejo, a lingering smell of smoke and more than a taint of foul play. >> it's quite horrible what happened to them, how they died, and how they should have -- they shouldn't deserve this. this is not what they deserved. >> 14-year-old twins trinh and tram and presumably her mother

never escaped when it caught fire. a younger sister escaped and flagged down a police car. >> it appears to be intentional. it's suspicious in nature and i can't go into any further deals than that. >> that makes it a murder case? >> it's being investigated as a homicide, yes. >> police have a suspect or a motive, they're not saying. but friends of the girls told us there had been household strife recently. >> yeah, there was some problems. i don't know if i can give it out. >> the twins would have been sophomores this year. they were members of the high school band at bethel high school. trinh played the flute, tram the clarinet. a difficult time today balancing the pain of their loss with joy from memories. >> whenever you hung out with them, you would always have that aura of happiness around them because they were always laughing and happy. >> that is tough to deal with at 14 years old. tough at any age. >> we have to honor them with these flowers over here. we, me, miss them a lot. >> we were like sisters.

like we were sisters. >> vallejo police say they're still speaking with people, trying to glean what happened. among the mysteries here, why no one inside the house called the fire department. it turned out police were flagged down by a third daughter who escaped outside. live in vallejo, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you very much. a small fire inside at&t park won't stop the giants from opening a home stand against defending world series champion houston tonight. abc 7 news was inside the ballpark after what appeared to be a grease fire broke out inside a concession stand. it happened while the giants took batting practice on the field. ballpark workers used a fire extinguisher to put it out. no problem. highway patrol officers hope witnesses can lead them to the person who shot and killed a man on the bay bridge. we first show you'd the eastbound backup that followed on abc 7 mornings. some people walked off the span, as you're seeing right there. gunfire erupted around 2:30 this

morning. investigators then kept the lanes closed for several hours. the victim's suv hit another man's car after the driver was shot. raul lopez stop and checked on people inside the suv. >> because that was right in the middle of the crossfire, because the left side. once i heard the five pops, the guy in the suv hits me and turns around. we both turn around. i'm lucky the other cars didn't hit me or hit him. >> two other people are recovering after being wounded. the chp believes the victims were argued the. we're awaiting for san francisco medical examiner to release the name of the man who died. and we sent out an alert about the shutdown at 3:25 this morning so commuters wouldn't get stuck when heading to work. download the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts for breaking alerts like this one. we are getting our first look this evening at a man accused of putting an m-80 style firework under a sheriff deputy's car. sonoma county deputies shared this picture of 22-year-old tristan proto today. he was arrested friday, the same

day the bomb squad blew up his backpack, a frayed that it might have contained other explosives. an offduty vallejo police officer chased and helped capture proto after he ran from the safeway parking lot in guerneville friday. investigators say he was doing meth right before the explosion. a modesto man received a 15-year prison sentence for his role in a plot to kill people at san francisco's pier 39. everitt jameson pleaded guilty in june to charges of trying to help isis carry out an attack ast fall. carry out an attack the fbi claimed jameson told an undercover agent he planned to use pipe bombs to scatter the crowd, and then shoot at people rung away from the explosions. once he is arest leased from prison, jameson will spend the rest of his life on probation. you're look live at a wildfire that is growing quickly in orange county. it broke thought the cleveland national forest, about four hours ago. and flames quickly charred more than one square mile i the rugged santa ana mountains.

so far the u.s. forest service has evacuated two cabin communities that are in the fire's path. the fire has destroyed one building so far. and some of the other california wildfires to talk about. late this afternoon people northwest of lakeport who were forced out of their homes by the mendocino complex fire were allowed to return home. the fires are on pace to become the largest wildfire incident in california history. it's that bad. they burned 273,000 acres, just 8,000 behind the largest. >> as we watched these weather patterns, it feels relatively cooler compared to the 100-degree weather we've been experiencing. but the humidity is just not rebounded. so between that and thosed winds in these areas, i expect to see the fire grow to number one tonight, if not tomorrow. >> right now 9300 structures are threatened by the fires. most of yosemite national park remains closed because of the ferguson fire, and no reopening date has been

announced. the closures include all of yosemite valley, the park's top tourist destination. crews are battling the ferguson fire inside of the western boundary. the ferguson fire has been blamed for two deaths since it broke out on july 13th. flames have charred more than 140 square miles. it's 38% contained. we'll have more on the impact of this closure coming up at 6:30. firefighters have a car fire that started in shasta county 45,% contained. not sure how long it will take to fully contain the 163,000 acre fire. menlo park firefighters posted video from the car fire that started in shasta county showing just huge fire retardant drops as you can see. a gofundme page has been set up for a 21-year-old pg&e worker who died responding to the fire this weekend. jaris ayita was killed in a fire accident near redding. so far people have donated more than $29,000 to help his family. we have the link on our website, abc7news.com. we have much more ahead for you on this monday evening. the new technology now being

lines are a fact of life for airport passengers, but tonight new technology at mineta san jose could make your travel a little smoother. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live at mineta san jose airport with a look at its faster lines. hi, david. >> hi, ama. you know, waiting in line at customs and immigration can entail a half hour wait. and that's even before you get to baggage claim. considering how some passengers have been in the air for nine to 16 hours, that can be very tiring. but technology is starting to change that. it's a drill every international passenger knows. wait in line, sometimes a long one, to have your passport checked, but not at mineta san jose international. instead, face the border agent's camera and facial recognition software will confirm your identity. >> our match rate is about 99%. the backup system is what goes

on today is a manual review of the documentation. >> an algorithm searches for an existing photo of the traveller from a visa application, a passport, or from a photo taken on a previous visit. the biometrics have gotten so advanced that even eyeglasses, a change in hairstyle or facial hair won't stump the system. before facial recognition, a typical wait in line was 29 minutes. now it's 22 minutes, and sometimes faster. >> it's a win for protecting the border, and it's a win for making sure that those that have legitimate reason to be here do so in the most expeditious way. >> arriving visitor confirmed that entering the u.s. is faster now. >> i think it's more smoother, i think. it's more than before, yeah. >> was it faster? >> yes, it was faster. it was more smoother, yeah. >> this means border and customs agents won't have to fingerprint noncitizens every time they arrive. facial recognition will also be deployed this fall at international departure gates.

instead of showing your boarding pass and potentially your passport to the airline gate agent as you're boarding the plane, it will be as simple as walking un, having your picture taken. two to three seconds, you'll board the aircraft. >> facial recognition does raise privacy concerns. however, customs and border protection agents say the pictures taken upon arrival are not kept very long. they're routinely purged in about two hours. at mineta san jose airport, david louie, abc 7 news. >> okay, david, thanks a lot. info wars and its conspiracy theory founder alex jones are no longer welcome on four major social media platforms. youtube, facebook, apple, and spotify have now removed content associated with jones and info wars because it violated hate speech policies. apple moved first last night, removing five of the six info wars podcasts from its podcasts app. facebook and spotify followed with similar measures today while youtube terminated jones'

attorney for gump's tells me there are some potential suitors, but details on who those suitor mace be, those are confidential. in san francisco tonight, i'm dion lim, abc 7 news. >> confidential, but let's hope they come through. thanks, dion, very much. time to turn to our weather on this monday. >> starting another week, spencer christian track it for us? >> it's a warm and windy evening around most of the bay area. even the coast is relatively mild. here is a look at live doppler 7. sunny skies over the bay and inland. and the usual fog at the coast. sort of a thin layer in most places right now. and talk about windy. check out these gusts. 31 miles per hour novey vat total. 23-mile-per-hour winds at san francisco right now. moving inland a bit, 24, 25-miles-per-hour gusts at concord and fairfield. so all around the bay area, still quite breezy. this is a view of a thin layer of low clouds and fog, moving through the golden gate right now, looking northward from sutro tower. it's 60 degrees in san francisco. oakland 69. mountain view 72. 89 degrees in san jose. 89 also in morgan hill, and 55 at half moon bay.

here is another view of the fog from emeryville, looking at lots of clear skies above. 89 in santa rosa. napa, 85. 88 at novato. 98 at vacaville. 89 at livermore. and here is the view from the east bay hills camera, looking towards the west-northwest out toward mount tam. these are our forecast features. we'll see foggy conditions in the bay overnight. a major midweek warm-up. it will last just a come of days and the heat will retreat at the end of the week. here is our forecast animation taking us into the overnight hours. notice the fog filling along the coastline. moving locally across the bay. it doesn't appear widespread as the morning commute gets under way at 5:00 tomorrow morning. maybe the fog will not interfere with your morning drive. back to the coastline, the fog will retreat during the day time hours and into the evening tomorrow, giving us another day of mostly sunny skies over the bay and inland. overnight low temperatures will be generally in the mid- to upper 50s. a little milder in the inland east bay, where lows will not drop below 60 degrees in places like concord and antioch.

and then tomorrow's highs will range from about 60, maybe 62 on the coast to mid and upper 70s around the bay shoreline. inland, it will be quite warm. look for highs of 91. 95 at cloverdale. in the south bay, 85 in san jose. 93 at morgan hill. it will be a bit warmer in some spots on wednesday as temperatures will be rising inland. as a matter of fact, up in cloverdale and clearlake high,s of 101 degrees. same readings on thursday, and the inland east bay will start to close in towards the 100 degrees mark as well. on friday we'll see the heat easing up just a bit. and temperatures will begin to settle back into a more seasonal range. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. once again, thursday looks like it's going to be the hottest day inland in the seven-day forecast period. we'll see mid- to upper 80s around the bay on thursday. and perhaps up to about 70 on the coast. as i said, the heat will begin to ease on friday. then saturday, sunday and monday, we'll see highs only up to about 60 on the coast. upper 70s around the bay. maybe 90 or 92 on the inland

live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> new video tonight, horrifying video shows a plane that took off from the bay area nosediving into a shopping center parking lot in orange county. >> the plane, a twin-engine cessna took off from buchanan field in concord sunday morning. all five people on board died in that crash. >> investigators say moments before the plane went down, the pilot declared an emergency, but didn't give details. the national transportation safety board says it plans to release a preliminary investigation report in five days' time after working with the faa and the plane's manufacturer. we're learning tonight that all five people on that plane had ties to the bay area. three worked in the same real estate office in danville. >> abc 7 news reporter laura anthony talked with some of their grief-stricken coworkers today. >> it really is a huge void and a loss. >> those who knew the five people who died in sunday's

plane crash in southern california are just starting to come to terms with their loss. mojdeh saleh is a long-time friend of 62-year-old floria hakimi who posted this photo to her instagram page as she boarded the plane. >> many people loved her. she touched in lives. >> hakimi and her son were both on the cessna 414, a twin-engine plane piloted by diablo's scott shepherd. his 42-year-old wife laura was also on board. floria hakimi, laura shepherd and a fifth victim, 29-year-old nasim ghanadan all worked together in the pacific union real estate office in danville. >> nasim was 29 years old, just a bundle of joy to be around and just embody life. really, it's just about remembering those we lost and letting the families know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. and whatever we can do to help, we will. >> 53-year-old scott shepherd

was an experienced pilot and president and ceo of a san francisco company called category 3, which also owned the plane that went down. scott and laura shepherd lived in diablo, and they are survived by two young children. besides real estate, floria hakeem was a teacher of meditation and practical philosophy. >> we believe that our energy is forever here, there, everywhere. so she is everywhere. >> in concord, laura anthony, abc 7 news. there are major new developments tonight in the paul pastelok tri-- paul manafort tr in virginia. rick gates testified in court today. when asked by pseto i hvolved i activity with manafort, he responded yes. he was asked if he committed any crimes with man tort. gates also responded yes. manafort faces bank fraud and tax evasion charges in connection with his time spent with the trump campaign. part of yosemite national park, including the very popular yosemite valley itself will

remain closed indefinitely. reporter natalie granda from our sister station from fresno has the latest now from yosemite. >> the ever growing ferguson fire now prompting parts of yosemite national park to close indefinitely while wawona residents were allowed to return home on monday, the wildfire continues to burn inside the national park. >> we have a very challenging situation. we have fire that's impacting all of the main roads that are used to access yosemite valley. >> take a look. fire is burning just steps from the arch rock entrance of the park. jamie richards says because of the flames and firefighting activity, they're not sure when they'll lift the closures. currently thousands of firefighters battling the fire are working with resource advisers to protect the cultural and ecological resources in the park. >> that can help advise the firefighters where there are sensitive resource, how do we take on this firefight while continuing to protect really important resources like the merced grove of giant sequoias.

>> usually there are 800 employees in park. with the closure they've had to find i have to work for national park workers while others decided the take time off. meanwhile, the gateway communities around the parks are also taking a hit. hotels in mariposa are barely seeing guests. >> we're seeing a drop in occupancy by at least 60 to 70%. we're generally full this time of the year. and we're seeing occupancies in 30% range if not lower during our peak season. >> the cost of fighting this peyer is continuing the rise. fire officials say it's now more at $90 million. firefighters are back burning and restoring old fire lines to prevent the fire from spreading further into the park. >> we're working as best we can with the resources that we have to manage this. but mother nature has taken its course, and we've needed to adapt to it. >> park rangers are evaluating the roads every day they say they want to make sure the roads are safe from fire and falling

trees before they reopen to visitors. in fish camp, natalie granda, abc 7 news. i want to show you some stunning video from italy. at least one person was killed and 70 injured. watch now in an accident on an elevated highway near bologna. police say the tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas collided with another vehicle and explode, sending flames way into the air. the force of the blast caused the highway to partially collapse. some people were hit by flying glass as windows shattered in nearby buildings. >> insane video. after months of eruptions, the lava at kilauea may finally be slowing down. take a look at this photo posted by the usgs today here is what one of the craters looked like before it erupted. now here it is three months later. since early may, the floor of the crater has dropped almost 1500 feet. hawaii's civil defense agency says lava has destroyed a total of 577 buildings.

new new programs are helping to get bay area kids off the sidewalks and on to a course that challenges their physical and mental skills, and the lessons are really fast-paced too. abc 7 sports director larry beil has more. >> roll down, get your feet level. >> the dust was flying and spirits were soaring on a newly built bike track in richmond. for some kids riding today, just being on a bmx bike is a unique experience. >> i came today. i didn't know how to ride a bike. i asked for training wheels. and i tried it and i learned how to ride a bike. >> the bikes and the coaching were supplied by a group called flood the streets with bikes. founder howard kato was once paralyzed in a shooting incident and fueled his rehabilitation with a goal of returning to bmx bike racing. >> they helped me get back into it. i think for me, it's pretty much helping give back to my community for the good things they've done to me, i can help the next kid do that. >> his program is geared to city
