ability. >> reporter: bart director nick josefowitz wants to explore whether they can do face recognition. he spoke to us via facetime. >> this isn't some big brother drag net approach. this is very targeted of folks who have warrant out for their arrest. >> reporter: despite the attacks including the murder of one person, facial recognition may be a step too far when it comes to new safety measures bart riders. >> they would have to make sure there were a lot of safeguards so their privacy isn't being jeopardized. >> because it's technology. there may be some errors. >> facial recognition is really not particularly accurate. >> reporter: attorney at san francisco electronic frontier foundation. he says because of the images its trained facial recognition technology works much better when identifying white people than people of color. >> it's a problem that's going to take decades and tens of millions of dollars to solve.

fire crews which are assisting with the response. fires have now burned 283,000 acres. as a reference point, that's an area larger than new york city. tonight, 11,000 homes in danger up 2,000 from today. firefighters were able to hold their ground to keep the fires combined 30% come tand. >> in southern california a wildfire exploded in size today forcing evacuations along the riverside and orange county board. the holly fire has burned about 4,000 acres since it started this afternoon with zero containment. firefighters worked in triple digit heat trying to contain it. at least two firefighters treated for injuries. you can see a helicopter swoop in, then hoist the two people to safety. this fire is burning near a popular trail. firefighters will work through the night to try to slow the carr fire that started in

closed for hours. no arrests have been made. >> a warning tonight about mountain lion seen in san mateo saw it late last night. officers searched the area but not able to find it. they say it was not aggressive. wildlife officials say if you see it keep your distance and immediately call police. san mateo limits buildings to five stories. one group wanted to extend the limitations but was rejected tonight. city council unanimously voted against to see if the law should be extended beyond 2020. they say they don't have the infrastructure to support a larger population. they argue the city needs more housing. a group of san francisco tenants is suing their landlords claiming they are using the ellis act to discriminate against the lbgqt community. they were there tonight to protest the eviction.
