wildfires. it would cost the county $475,000. eight cameras would be positioned on communication towers and other existing structures to spot fires in the lake sonoma watershed. they hope they will one day allow firefighters to detect wildfires the moment they begin. >> interesting idea. anything we can do to get a heads-up when the fires begin. it's been such a bad fire season already. >> one of the worst. at 4:30 in the morning, we'll check in with weather and traffic. we start with mike. >> hi, everybody. let's take a look at live doppler 7. it tells the tale of the morning. more gray out there this morning. mist and even drizzle as you get near the coast in san francisco. you can see from our exploratorium camera at pier 15, we're seeing a lowering of the clouds here and a little moisture infusion. temperature about the same. mid to upper 50s at 7:00. as we head through the 12-hour planner, we'll stay at the 50s at the coast, low to upper 70s at the bay, and low 80s to low 90s inland from noon to 4:00. we'll be back in the 50s if we

ever leave them in a few selected spots along the coast. the rest of us in the 70s by 7:00. let's talk about the fire when we come back. conditions in one respect are going to get worse the next couple days. >> good morning, mike. we're starting off incident-free this morning so no major blocking issues and really quiet to kick off the tuesday morning drive. we have a stack-up in the cash lanes for the bay bridge toll plaza, but fast track users will not have delays and we should have under an hour to go before they turn the metering lights on. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, our only drive time in the yellow. 37 minutes. westbound 4, antioch to concord in the green at 13, and southbound 101 could have fog along that stretch, san rafael to san francisco, not slowing you down in the green at 16 minutes. >> speaking of the commute, this morning b.a.r.t. riders may notice more officers as the agency is trying to reassure riders the system is safe. >> fr after a series of high profile and deadly attacks,

b.a.r.t. attempts to repair its image and holes its in security. amy hollyfield is live for us in pleasanton. >> hi, reggie. b.a.r.t. is looking at spending $28 million on improving safety and is even looking at turning to technology to try to help them solve this issue. one b.a.r.t. director says he wants to look at the idea of using facial recognition technology. the idea is to try and add the technology to b.a.r.t.'s 4,000 cameras and to use the technology to keep riders who are known to pose a threat to the system, get them out of the system. but riders we talked to are skeptical. >> i think a lot of people are going to have a lot of suspicions. a lot of paranoia about it and it may be more trouble than it's actually worth. >> i think that is a bad idea. i just think that it impedes more on our own privacy and because it's technology, there may be some errors.

efforts to find solutions. wait times have grown out of control because of a crush of people trying to get those federally compliant real i.d.s. the dmv recently expanded saturday hours to try to cut down on wait times. >> now to the peninsula where one city is debating just how high buildings should rise into the sky. san mateo city hall rejected a proposed ballot proposal. the limit expires in 2020. supporters of the proposal say the city doesn't have the infrastructure to support taller buildings and the larger population that would come with it. opponents argue the city needs more housing. san francisco police want to find the two people who beat an man and woman who offered the 86-year-old a ride. happened in the mission district sunday night. police say the attackers asked the man if he needed a ride near 16th and hauf streets. when he got in, they asked him

for money and then punched him as he tried to get out. the man is expected to be okay. the paul manafort trial continues today in virginia. this follows explosive testimony yesterday. the prosecution's star witness took the stand and testified he helped president trump's former campaign chair commit crimes. abc news reporter linda lopez has the story. >> the hugely anticipated courtroom showdown bringing paul manafort face-to-face with rick gates. gates' explosive testimony key to the prosecution's case against manafort in the first trial stemming from robert mueller's russia investigation. before working together on the trump campaign, manafort and gates spent years working together making huge salaries consulting for foreign political clients. now, manafort on trial for falsifying tax returns and failing to report millions in income. and gates, having pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to federal authorities, now testifying against his former

over the next 24 hours and they'll remain pretty quiet. they'll pick up about 10 to 15 in the afternoon and evening hours and drop down to calm conditions overnight. now, this is going to allow the heat to build up, 98 today. 100 tomorrow and thursday. and then mid to upper 90s friday through next monday. back here at home, just a touch cooler in san francisco. that mist hanging in the air. 51 at glen park to about 54 in many neighborhoods. lake merced, sunset, and the financial district. here's a look at south beach. the clouds hanging a little low. didn't need the windshield wipers when i was driving in buzz you may as you get close to the coast. ferry rides choppy this afternoon and mass transit has a huge summer spread once again. the south bay, 65 waking up with increasing sunshine to 79 at noon. and then we'll hang out in the mid 80s most of the afternoon hours, down to about 80 at 6:00, and 72 at 8:00. that's pretty comfortable. unlike the ride was yesterday

morning on the bay bridge, how are we doing this morning? >> nothing like that today. in fact, we're extremely quiet here this morning all the way around. i'm having a tough time finding anything, any slow spots to show you. here's a look at walnut creek, 680 in the southbound direction, slowly starting to fill in. just north of treat boulevard. that's about it for you so far today. just those typical volumes starting to fill in just a little bit here. mostly green on our traffic maps. really the only red we're seeing still getting out of the tri-valley. that's not terrible, although it is quite a bit slower than just a few minutes ago. westbound 205 was at 30 miles per hour, down to 25 now. we'll take a closer look at mass transitt coming up in ten minutes. thank you. two new programs getting bay area kids off the sidewalks and onto a bike. the life lessons they are learning. a $30,000 cello leaves an american airlines passenger fuming and singing the blues.

people still dealing with poor air quality, and the same area yesterday continues today for the high fire danger around santa barbara in the mountains north of l.a. 94 in l.a. 115 in palm springs. 91 in yosemite with the poor air quality. it does filter into tahoe and may stay there through at least thursday when we reach 90 degrees. >> all right, thank you. >> we're getting a look at the man accused of putting an m-80 style firework under a sonoma county sheriff's deputy car. the department shared this picture of 22-year-old trysten protoo. they say he decided to light the firework under the car on friday because he does not like the sheriff's office. happened at the guerneville safeway parking lot. he tried to run from the scene but he was caught. the bomb squad responded and blew up his backpack, fearing it contained other explosives.

meanwhile, investigators also say proto was doing meth right before the explosion. >> a musician says she was kicked off an american airlines flight after she bought a separate seat for her $30,000 cello. the woman flew to miami from chicago, no problems there. she says the crew even helped strap the instrument in. on the return flight, a much different tune. she says she was told to get off the plane at the last minute because the aircraft was too small for the cello. the woman ultimately did make it back to chicago one day later on a different american flight. the airline is blaming the issue on a miscommunication. two fast paced programs are getting east bay kids off the streets and onto a course that challenges their physical and mental skills. in richmond, the city recently opened a new bmx bike course called dirt world. city funds and donations helped build the course in hopes of luring kids off the streets. that's where the

has lava has destroyed 577 buildings. >> rental car company avis has signed a deal with lyft to let drivers rent cars to pick up riders. both companies say the partnership will allow lyft to respond to changing attitudes about car ownership. lyft still wants to give drivers who don't have a chance to own their own cars an opportunity to drive for them. thousands of vehicles will be offered through the program. drivers can rent cars directly through the lyft app in the next few months. a study from consumer reports is raising concern about peer to peer payment systems. they checked out five systems. apple pay, facebook payments and messenger, venmo, square's cash, and zel. they found they're generally safe but there are some risks. the systems could impose more protection including defaulting to the highest security level. users would have to opt out to use a lower security setting. consumer reports says most of the systems also need to do more to tell you how they use your
