it is foggy now, but it's about to heat up again by this afternoon. warm temperatures will blanket the bay area and for some of us, the air quality could get worse. there is an air advisory. air quality advisory in the north and the east bays today. right now, off to a cool start. >> 6:00 a.m. good morning to you on this tuesday, august 7th. you're never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist mike nicco. >> we'll talk about what's going on outside. look at the gray infiltrating more of our neighborhoods this morning, as i roll the last three hours of live doppler 7, the gray being the cloud cover. a little mist and drizzle as you near the coast, and also the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge. my accuweather 12-hour planner, mid to upper 50s at 7:00, and you can see the 50s are going to cling to the coast while we'll hit 70 around the bay, 82 inland, and 74 to 92, summer spread developing by 9:00.

most of us in the 50s and 60s except for 70s inland by 7:00. let's get a check of the morning commute. >> good morning. can want to head to the central valley which is where we have pretty much our only slow volume today. if you're on the inbound side, westbound 205 to 580, 13 miles per hour, approaching altamont pass. that spills over to 580. a little more than we typically see. you're done to 30 miles per hour. what i really want to point out is eastbound 205 into the tracy area, normally you're fine. we have roadwork blocking the left lane until about 7:00 this morning. that is crawling for about three miles. also starting to see heavy traffic in walnut creek, southbound 680, this is around treat boulevard. a lot of folks hitting the brakes but nothing blocking. we'll take a look at the bay bridge commute next. >> police are still looking for the gunman in the deadly shooting on the bay bridge yesterday morning. it left the eastbound morning commute at a standstill for hours. >> quite the headache.

thisinvestn. >> jeolic darryl stinet from mesquite, texas, was behind the wheel when someone shot into it. the suv was shot by a gray or silver sedane or small suv. the person who pulled the trigger is still at large. the deadly shooting and subsequent crash forced chp to shut down all lanes of the bay bridge. the closure began around 2:23 yesterday morning and kept countless drivers from moving for hours. the special investigations unit is handling the case, going through video footage and evidence collected on scene. we're told the two men in the car with stinet were also shot. >> one of the passengers was shot in the arm, roie this wasnd hospital.

we're told one was released and the other is in fair condition. after the shooting, we k stinet's suv crashed into another driver. we were able to connect with that driver. you'll hear from him in about 45 minutes. but for now, i'm reporting live at the bay bridge toll plaza. abc 7 news. >> thank you, amanda. it's a fire that is making state history. the mendocino complex fire is now the largest california wildfire ever. >> together, the ranch and river fires have burned nearly 284,000 acres. the larger ranch fire is 21% contained. and last year's thomas fire in southern california held a previous record as the state's largest fire. that one burning 282,000 acres. >> meanwhile, this morning, fire structures last night.ne >> that broke out after 9:00 in gilroy. hilly terrain made it challenging for fire crews to access the fire, and at last check, the fire had burned five

acres of grass. firefighters have stopped the spread of the fire, but they're still trying to contain it. roads are closed in the area because of the fire engines that are responded. >> crews in southern california dealing with a new fire that grew quickly forcing evacuations. this is a live look at the fire burning along the riverside and orange county border. it's called the holy fire. the latest update came in at 8:00 last night. the fire had burned 4,000 acres at that point with zero percent containment. at least two firefighters are dealing with heat related injuries. and two hikers had to be rescued getting trapped near the holy fire. you can see here in this video, a helicopter swooping down, hoisting the two people to safety. this is burning near a popular trail. >> within the next two days the ntsb plans to release its preliminary investigation report about the plane from east bay that crashed in orange county. video shows the small plane taking a nose dive on taken off

the pilot, scott shepherd, was the ceo of a san francisco company called category three. his wife lara was also on the plane and her coworkers. they worked at a real estate office in danville. hakimi's son naveed was also onboard. >> just about remembering those we lost and leting the families know that our thoughts and prayers are with them, and whatever we can do to help, we will. >> the final crash report isn't expected for at least a year. an update now on a fire that killed three people, including 14-year-old twins. vallejo police are now treating the case as a homicide. the home went up in flames sunday morning. a younger sister escaped and flagged down a police car. the twins and presumably their mother did not make it. investigators tell abc 7 news it now looks like the fire was deliberately set. friends of the two girls said they had besmin problems at home, but would not elaborate.

the girls identified as trin and tram tran, went to bethel high school in vallejo. >> new at 6:00, san francisco taking a step to become more proactive to address the homeless problem. according to the examiner, a three-month assessment blitz is now under way. the goal, to interview 2,000 homeless residents by the end of october and prioritize them based on need. beginning in november, the people with the greatest need will be placed into supportive housing. this is part of mayor london breed's $60 million effort to address homelessness in the city. >> a group of san francisco tenants is suing several landlords. the tenants claim the landlords are using the ellis act to discriminate against the lgbtq community. abc 7 was there as neighbors rallied in front of a house near the corner of guerrero and 15th streets to protest the eviction. the tenants include three drag queens and a gay man. thaw allege the landlords disposed of patio furniture and

6:14. welcome back. this morning, the west hollywood city council has passed a largely symbolic resolution asking for the removal of president trump's star from the hollywood walk of fame. the star was destroyed two weeks ago by a man with a pickax. council members raised concerns about president trump's treatment of women and minorities in their resolution. it's not likely anything will actually happen. the hollywood chamber of commerce says it does not remove stars from the walkway. mr. trump was given the star in 2007 for his producing work on the miss universe pageant. the father of the missing iowa woman who grew up in oakland says he now believes his daughter is alive. >> 20-year-old mollie tibbetts has been missing for three weeks. she vanished without a trace july 18th. a reward for her safe return is now at $260,000. that is a record amount for central iowa's crime stoppers. speaking to abc's "good morning america" today, molle's father

says he believes she's with someone she knows. >> probably someone who cares about her but that relationship was misguided, misinterpreted, and went wrong. and i think they are in a place with mollie and they don't know how to get themselves out of this horrible situation. >> he did not elaborate on why he believes that. tibbetts spent part of her childhood in glenview before moving with her family to iowa. >> new at 6:00, driver assist systems found on some cars can file in some circumstances. that's according to the institute for highway safety. the insurance industry group found electronic assist systems can fail to see stopped vehicles. in some cases, they actually steer drivers into a crash if the driver isn't paying attention. the iihs tested five systems on teslas, mercedes, bmws, and

millbrae, to 85 in redwood city. a lot of cloud cover and upper 50s to low 60s. down the south bay, partly cloudy at about 60. 9 and hanging out rnd 81 in sunnyva sunnyvale. as we head to the north bay, partly cloudy this morning. also 55, but sunshine and hitting the mid 80s to the mid 90s this afternoon. and warmest inland where we're waking up mainly clear. a few patches of clouds out there, but temperatures in the mid 90s to nearly 102 in brentwood. my accuweather seven-day forecast, it gets even hotter inland and around the bay wednesday and thursday. but by the time we head out for the weekend, temperatures back around 60 at the coast. upper 70s around the bay and near 90 inland. looks nice. here's alexis with a look at the morning commute. >> overall, really quiet this morning. very few incidents to talk about. roadwork in the tracy area slowing you down on eastbound 205. between west grantline road and i 5 into the tracy area, we have

green. the traffic light information system is in place in ten cities nationwide, and that includes palo alto. when an audi comes within range of a transmitting traffic signal, an icon of a traffic light appears on the dashboard and counts down the seconds until the light is going to turn green. te engineer says this tech has a lot of potential. >> next step is to reverse that and have the vehicle send information to the traffic signal so that we can then have the vehicle be the detector versus an in-ground loop or video detection. other cities with this feature include arcadia, las vegas, and portland. >> new at 6:00, a health alert about sleep. new research shows too much sleep could be a sign of health problems. researchers in england found people who slept ten hours or more on average per night were 30% more likely to die prematurely. they were also at risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease

a solo vehicle spin-out crash blocking the left lane. they just pushed it off to the shoulder, not sure what made the vehicle spin out, but you're down to about 28 and 36 miles per hour approaching that. so that is stop and go well north of 92. that's several miles and that is heavy. a little better news for the bay bridge toll plaza. a minor crash approaching the metering lights that has been cleared and the lights are still on and we have typical delays back into the maze. >> alexis, thank you. this morning, b.a.r.t. riders may notice more officers as the agency is trying to reassure riders the system is safe. >> there's been a series of high-profile and even deadly attacks on b.a.r.t. and the agency is trying to repair its image and holes in its security. amy hollyfield live for us in pleasanton. amy. >> hi, reggie. b.a.r.t. riders agree there needs to be more security, but riders do have a limit. we're noticing when we ask people about one idea, they get

news app are full of b.a.r.t. resources. one thing you'll find is advice on what to do to mendocino comps now the largest wildfire event in california history. >> it's actually made up of two huge fires but crews are tweeting this as one. together, the ranch and river fires have scorched 283,000 acres. the smaller river fire is 58% contained. the ranch fire is only 21% contained. firefighters say this is one of the most challenging wildfire seasons they have seen. >> we're looking at over 629,000 acres of ground and vegetation burned in the state of california since january 1st of this year. last year, same period of time, 223,000 acres. >> the mendocino complex surpasses last year's massive thomas fire, which burned in santa barbara and ventura counties. >> meanwhile, to the north in the redding area, firefighters are slowly making progress on the carr fire. they have it 47% contained.

the carr fire hasst nearly homes andd > and the nityast seven hs. opened its doors to wildfire evacuees and relief workers. each stay is free. you can find open beds or rooms at airbnb.com. if you would like to help, you can offer the use of your own ho the sonoma county board of supervisors will consider approving a plan to install a network of web cameras to help emergency responders spot wildfires. this plan would cost the county $475,000. eight cameras would be positioned on communication towers and other existing structures to spot fires in the lake sonoma watershed. the technicians creating the cameras hope they will one day allow firefighters to detect wildfires the moment they begin. federal officials in southern california are still not exactly sure what caused a crash of a small plane that took

off from concord, killing all five people onboard. people asking now why small aircraft can be mucs than some larger aircraft we see. >> 347 people died last year alone in general aviation accidents, but there's been just one death in ten years on commercial aircraft. experts believe sunday's crash may have been the result of the plane running out of gas. >> we know that that pure vertical means the pilot has totally lost control. when the fire crews reached the wreckage, there was no fire to put out. so the investigators will be looking to see, did he actually run out of gas? >> the faa has reese chtly added 40 safety enhancements in training, procedures, and new technology to improve safety in general aviation. happening today, california lawmakers will hold a joint hearing to try to solve the issue of those extremely long wait times at the state's dmv offices.

felting from san francisco and jim frasier will spearhead efforts to find solutions. wait times have grown out of control because a crush of people are trying to get the federally compliant real i.d. the dmv recently expanded saturday hours to try to cut down on the wait times. >> now to the peninsula where one city is debating how high a building should go. we were at san mateo city hall as the city council rejected a ballot proposal. it would have asked voters to extend the city's current five-story limit for another ten years. and that limit expires in 2020. supporters of the proposal said the city doesn't have the infrastructure to support taller buildings. and the larger population that comes with it. opponents argue the city needs more housing. san francisco police want to find the two people who beat and robbed an elderly man. police say the attackers were a man and woman who offered the 86-year-old a ride. happened in the mission district sunday night. police say the attackers asked the man if he needed a ride near 16th and hoff streets. when he got in, they asked for

his money, then punched him as he tried to get out. the man is expected to be okay. >> the paul manafort trial continues today in virginia. there was damaging testimony at the trial yesterday. the prosecution's star witness, rick gates, took the stand and testified he helped his former boss commit crimes. manafort's accused of falsifying tax returns and failing to report millions in income. gates told juror that over several years, they hid their income in foreign bank accounts. he says at least some of that money that was hidden came from manafort's work on behalf of ukrainian politicians with deep ties to russia. you're never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. just to give you an idea of how big the fires are in the mendocino complex. the areas in red, the biggest one, the ranch fire, where our reporting station is down in the valleys and that's why it's calm there. up in the hills about 2800 feel for the river fire, that's where

the winds continue to blow at 15 to 21 miles per hour. that's what's pushing some smoke over top of us, but it is in the middle parts of the atmosphere, just like it was yesterday. but once the ces up and the air starts turning over, some of that will sink down into lake and mendocino counties and possibly out near tracy and brentwood like it did yesterday. winds are not going to be a big issue. up to 12 miles per hour over the next 24 hours but the heat will be as we flirt with 100, today, tomorrow, thursday, and mid to upper 90s the rest of the week. here's a look at temperatures. we have mid 50s to mid 60s down in the south bay. even some 40s up in the north bay. let's take a look at what's going to happen with your commute forecast. you look at san mateo bridge, where the clouds are starting to roll over. a little patchy mist and fog. it's a little weepy this morning. ferry rides could be choppy and the summer spread, 37 degrees from san francisco to some of our inland neighborhoods during the afternoon hours. we're going to bring alexis in. this time yesterday, we were watching the bay brinj and

cringing. what about this morning? >> today, it's been the total opposite. no major problems. so we're hoping we and continue that trend here this morning. just in the last 15 minutes or so, we have gotten a couple crashes in for 880. this time, we have a new one on the northbound side. this is near washington avenue, on the san lorenzo area. we have three to four vehicles involved and this is blocking two lanes. the lighter side of traffic, but you are heavy as you travel on that northbound side, and the southbound side, recovering from an earlier solo vehicle crash near alvarado niles road and you're stop and go for about seven miles. some of that is the typical backup and some is residual delays as well. i wanted to show you san mateo bridge. westbound 92 getting heavy, but nothing blocking and you should be fine once you make it to the midspan. take a look at this incredible video from highway in toronto. follow that blue circle. a car plows through a green suv that was stranded on the median. debris and people go flying, if

traveling eastbound on the lower deck of the bay bridge when someone fired bullets into the vehicle, killing the texas man. the two passengers who were will him were also shot. the men were taken to san francisco general hospital. one man was released and the other is in fair condition. the investigation shut down all lanes of the lower deck west of treasure island for more than four hours yesterday morning. once we got through, we connected with raul lopez, the man who got caught in the line of fire and whose car was hit by stinet's suv. >> once i heard the fire pops, the guy in the suv hits me and turned around. we both turn around. i'm lucky the other cars didn't hit me or hit him. >> officers say there is no reason to believe the shooting was completely random. we know right now special investigation unit officers are on the case. the chp says that they are looking for a gray or silver sedan or small suv connected to this case. for now, reporting live at the bay bridge toll plaza.
