lots of smiles there for becca and garrett. >> everybody here stayed up all night to watch this. becca and garrett flew here all night to be a part of our show. can't wait to talk to them. i'll play a little newlywed game with the two. >> a nearly newlywed game. >> that's right. first, we begin with that dangerous heat that's hitting both coasts this morning, the hottest temperatures so far this season aggravating wildfires out west. >> a new one in california is called the holy fire. it's leading to helicopter rescues and the mendocino complex fire is now the state's largest ever. we're going to go to will carr who's on the ground in trabuco canyon with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, michael. there is a constant reminder of those intense conditions that fire crews continue to encounter on the ground. overnight we saw a hellish orange glow on the skyline. this is now a record-setting wildfire season and we still have a long way to go.

overnight the mendocino complex fire exploding in size. now the largest wildfire on record in california's history. over 283,000 acres burning so far. that's nearly 450 square miles. the fire, 30% contained. this morning, 9300 structures in harm's way, 75 homes already burned to the ground. there are now 18 large filwildfs burning across the state with 14,000 firefighters working nonstop. the carr fire, entering its third week, destroying more than a thousand homes, burning 160,000 acres. two firefighters injured overnight in the holy fire in southern california erupting in orange county and spreading quickly. >> the flames were across the road. we couldn't cross. >> reporter: 4,000 acres burned in a matter of hours. the fire is zero percent contained. two hikers rescued after they were trapped by the massive blaze. the elderly couple scrambling to a canyon where they were pulled to safety by a helicopter. yosemite national park now closed indefinitely. the ferguson fire's smoke too

much for tourists, that fire now the fourth largest in the state's history. last year the thomas fire became the largest wildfire in california's history. that fire broke out in december, and the mendocino complex fire surpassed that fire and keep in mind we're only in august. >> thank you so much, will. it's devastating all the way around. >> thinking about everybody out there. let's go to ginger now with more on the fires. ginger. >> it's a dry and unstable air mass, especially in the pacific northwest under this ridge that's responsible for a lot of those red flag warnings that are up today. there are also excessive heat warnings. down in southern california parts of arizona you'll see wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour, relative humidity between 4% and 12%. horrible conditions when trying to fight fires. let's talk about the pacific ocean where we have a lot of activity going on. four areas of tropical waves and hurricane hector is the one that we're really watching because it is going to close in on hawaii in the next 48 hours or so.

it is very symmetrical. it's called annular. that's a good thing because the more compact it is the less impact it would have to hawaii and it looks like it will pass 150 miles just south wednesday morning. there is a tropical storm watch in place for some rain, if any rain bands get out there but mostly for the swells, 12 to 18 feet. that's going to be your biggest impact there. something we'll watch because a little nudge to the north will be a different story. robin. >> i know you're going to keep your eye on it. thank you, ginger. first big trial in the mueller investigation. president trump's 2016 campaign chair paul manafort facing the prospect of life in prison and the prosecution's star witness, manafort's longtime deputy rick gates is back on the stand today after opening testimony where he admitted to criminal activity and laid the blame on his former boss. our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega is tracking the case in alexandria, virginia. good morning. >> reporter: hey george, good morning to you. the stakes could not be higher here. paul manafort for the second day

in a row will come face-to-face with his former protege who has now flipped, is cooperating with the special counsel and testifying against his old boss. center stage this morning, special counsel robert mueller's star witness, rick gates, the former deputy campaign manager seen right there behind donald trump at the republican national convention. now back for a second day on the stand in a virginia federal courthouse testifying against his old boss, paul manafort. his first day, explosive. gates telling the court they spent years committing crimes together including not reporting more than a dozen offshore accounts. the prosecutors asking, did you commit any crimes with mr. manafort? yes, gates answered. how much did you fail to report? over the years, several million dollars. the money came from manafort's work on behalf of ukrainian politicians with deep ties to russia. tens of millions of dollars prosecutors say that manafort

failed to report and hid in offshore accounts. they say he falsified his tax returns too. and they allege it's how he bankrolled his lavish lifestyle from luxury real estate to antique rugs and expensive clothes like this $15,000 ostrich coat. gates and manafort spent years working side by side as political operatives. in february, gates pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to federal authorities. he has not yet been sentenced. but now inside that courtroom, manafort who has pleaded not guilty staring right at gates, gates mainly avoiding eye contact with his former boss, even as he claimed that he lied because manafort told him to and admitted he embezzled several hundred thousand dollars from manafort. a charge manafort's lawyers have long maintained. today, manafort's team expected to challenge gates' credibility. one lawyer telling the court last week, gates is willing to say anything to save himself.

so this case is not about collusion. it is not about russian interference in the election, but you can bet mueller will talk to gates on that front. after all, he is the highest ranking former campaign aide to cooperate with the special counsel and rose to the rank of deputy campaign manager and he helped plan that inauguration. he surely has a story to tell. >> yeah, and they may have already talked about it. we know those negotiations between robert mueller and the president about a possible interview continue. rudy giuliani now saying he expects to respond to mueller today or tomorrow. >> reporter: yeah, it could happen any moment. you'll remember the special counsel has made it clear to the president's legal team that he wants to question the president among the topics on obstruction of justice. the president's team, the legal team is pushing back strongly on that front. if this letter from giuliani and the team goes out today or tomorrow it seems that these negotiations that have been going on for months now, george, are not ending any time soon. >> big game of chicken there. cecilia, thanks very much. also, a big day in politics. primary rates in several states

plus a special house election in ohio. that is drawing a visit from president trump as republicans fight to hold a safe gop seat. chief white house correspondent jon karl is tracking the race. this is a district that president trump won by 11 points but the house race a dead heat. >> reporter: it sure looks that way, george. republicans are waging an all-out war to try to keep this seat. they are outspending democrats by about 5-1, george, and they have deployed not just president trump but also vice president pence in recent days. the fact that this is even a competitive race is a major sign of trouble for republicans. as you mentioned, donald trump carried this district by double digits. it is also a district republicans have held for decades. the last republican congressman in the last race won by more than 35 points. a win here for democrats would be a sure sign of a blue wave coming in november, george. >> and the president getting involved again this morning sending out a tweet on behalf of the republican candidate and also sent out a tweet and getting involved in the kansas

governor's primary supporting one of his big supporters who's up against the republican establishment. >> reporter: this surprised some of the president's own political advisers. it surprised republican leaders. he endorsed kris kobach, somebody who's seen as a hard-right conservative against the incumbent governor jeff collier and has republicans worried that a victory for kobach in the primary could pose trouble for republicans in the fall. they think that he may have a hard time beating democrats because of his extreme views on immigration. but, george, the president is on a roll with these primary endorsements. he has endorsed 11 republicans since june. all 11 have won in those primaries. >> a lot of power inside the party. jon karl, thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, george. now to those pleas to stop the violence in chicago. just this past weekend 66 people were shot, 14 of them killed in what chicago police describe as gang violence. no one has been arrested so far.

abc's alex perez is in chicago with the latest. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, michael. both the mayor and the police superintendent calling the surge in violence unacceptable and also calling on residents to step up. this morning, jahnae patterson's family grieving. >> they took my baby. for what? >> reporter: the 17-year-old killed during one of the most violent weekends the windy city has seen this year. >> this violence has to stop. >> reporter: at least 14 dead. more than 50 injured by gun violence and so far zero arrests. one trauma center so overwhelmed, family members forced to wait outside. the violence mostly in two of the city's roughest neighborhoods. top cop eddie johnson frustrated demanding residents get more involved. >> these shootings are not random. they are fueled by gang conflicts. we know who they are and we continue to send a message that it's okay to commit these crimes

by not doing anything as a community. >> reporter: the city, which has spent years grappling with gun violence, has worked to flood high crime areas with officers and invested in high-tech equipment to help predict shootings and better respond. an emotional emanuel pleading with residents. >> we have a heavy heart. our souls are burned. what happened this weekend did not happen in every neighborhood in chicago but it is unacceptable to happen in any neighborhood in chicago. >> reporter: and despite those eye-opening figures and that death toll, officials here say the number of shootings this year is actually down about 20% compared to last year. michael. >> all right, thank you. the number's still staggering. thank you for that. robin. it really is. now to growing concern over that red tide in florida impacting more than 100 miles of coastal line creating toxic fumes. abc's victor oquendo is in cape coral, florida with more and you went out on a boat and saw the

red tide up close. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we saw it firsthand. those dead fish littering the coast and the waterways. it does not take a long time for your throat to really start burning out here. this red tide that has ravaged the southwest coast of florida is now moving north. this morning, the state of florida is facing a coastal disaster. a red tide stretching more than 100 miles, from naples to sarasota, and spreading keeping tourists away and sickening dozens. the toxic fumes are dangerous to breathe and if you're swimming in an infested beach, it can be harmful if ingested. nick fisher, a fishing guide, says this is supposed to be his busy season, but because of the red tide, business is way down. >> how much did you put into this boat? >> close to 130. >> it's not getting used. >> reporter: this family cutting their vacation short in saras a sarasota. >> it was horrendous. there was hundreds of dead fish in the water, on the shoreline.

>> reporter: the red tide, a bloom of harmful rust-colored algae killing marine life at alarming rates, inundating beaches with dead fish, turtles, even a whale shark washing ashore in sanibel. at the island inn sanibel, the general manager says he's lost about $100,000 in cancellations in less than two weeks. >> i was here for the bp oil spill. i was here for hurricane irma, hurricane charlie. those events pale in comparison to this event. >> reporter: the red tide is a naturally occurring event but this one, the worst in decades. and it's being compounded by a simultaneous blue-green algae bloom caused by runoff from large farms and businesses, the one-two punch devastating for local wildlife. this canal is one of those that's clogged with that nasty blue-green algae. this stuff feeds the red tide and there's a thick layer of it coating the area. residents are stuck living with this green slime right in their

back yards and experts say the key to containing it is stop the runoff from large farms and businesses in the central part of the state. robin. >> all right, victor, thank you. we turn to a dangerous hailstorm that hit colorado, injured more than a dozen and destroyed hundreds of cars and abc's clayton sandell is there in colorado springs with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hey, george, we are here in the parking lot of the che -- cheyenne mountain zoo here in colorado springs and look at these cars. this back windshield completely smashed out and look at the dents here. this will give you an idea what softball-size hail can do. there's shattered glass and pieces of car all over the ground. these are just a few of the hundreds that after this freak hail storm hit were left undrivable. people trapped in cars by icy projectiles said the hailstorm sounded like gunfire. the cheyenne mountain zoo in colorado springs pummeled. 14 people injured. five seriously. >> the hail was so hard, my daughter got taken to the hospital.

>> reporter: grizzly bears bombarded scrambling for shelter as softball-size hailstones come crashing down. the zoo walkways cleared as more than 3,000 took cover. the downpour echoing inside as the storm knocks tree branches to the ground. the massive chunks of hail shattering windows, damaging 300 cars, sending debris flying and damaging homes. on the roads, drivers forced to pull over. this cop car's window shattered and this dashboard taking a major hit from the tennis ball-size ice, back windows shattered to pieces. the zoo says they did lose a few birds. other animals were injured. the zoo is going to be closed today so they can tow all of these cars out of here. george. >> okay, clayton, thanks very much. that is some damage. >> it really is. >> unexpected. nothing you can do. all right. thank you for that. now we have an impressive sight you may have noticed if you looked up at the sky earlier

this morning. the spacex falcon 9 rocket, there it is, successfully launching from cape canaveral overnight. the purpose of the mission, to carry a communications satellite into orbit and this is the first time spacex has reused one of their powerful boosters. it's all part of their plan to reuse rockets and cut costs. you can hear the cheers in the background. we're going to go back to ginger. another day of dangerous heat in the east. >> yes, from eastern mississippi all the way through eastern maine. we have heat advisories on the map and that big ridge is still sitting with most folks. it started to blow through in western new york and northern new england but we'll go for another day. 95 was the record daily high at burlington, vermont. 95 at laguardia. so it was all over the place, heat indices for later this afternoon will feel like nearly 100 from boston to new york and even up into maine. that's a big deal. people in texas tweeted and said, those numbers mean nothing. believe me, up here it means a lot and you talk to us when you get that inch of snow. all right. your local weather in 30

she's like, get off the phone now. he's just, like, looking at the camera -- >> feeling pretty good after flying all night. we have a lot of headlines to get to right now, starting with the hottest temperatures of the season. aggravating those wildfires out west. the mendocino complex fire is now the largest in california ever. it has scorched more than 283,000 acres across the state. and the first set of u.s. sanctions on iran went back into effect overnight. the sanctions were oringianlly lifted with the iran nuclear deal but president trump withdrew from it earlier and tweeted saying anyone doing business with iran will not be doing business with the united states. i am asking for world peace, nothing less. and take a look at this crash. everyone survived after a car plowed right into that suv stranded on the highway in toronto. >> oh, my goodness. >> three people were injured. they are recovering right now. >> that person right there next to the vehicle. glad everything is okay. >> yes, we are. and also this morning, we have a cautionary tale for everybody out there.

it's about taking a bet or a dare from your friends. take a look what happened at a mariners and blue jays game streaking across the field during the 9th inning. he was tackled by security and taken off the field and now he may be deported back to ireland. all reportedly for an $80 bet. that is not the way you want to be sent back home. >> looks like there's a little more going on than an $80 bet right there. >> so much i can say to that. >> your minds are both whirling. but we'll leave it at that. we'll move on now to the latest on the missing college student, mollie tibbetts, her father is speaking out in a new interview this morning. revealing what he thinks happened to his daughter and abc's whit johnson is here. he thinks she may be -- may have been taken by someone she knows? >> reporter: that's right. good morning. mollie's father saying her disappearance may be the result of a misguided relationship but offering no evidence to back up that theory. her family desperate for answers

after weeks of searches and interviews have turned up empty. this morning, mollie tibbetts' father telling abc news that he thinks his daughter who has been missing for nearly three weeks is alive and with someone she knows. >> probably someone who cares about her, but that that relationship was misguided, misinterpreted and went wrong, and i think they are in a place with mollie and they don't know how to get themselves out of this horrible situation. >> reporter: rob tibbetts not elaborating on why he believes this but also saying the lack of answers is strangely providing new hope. >> i think because they haven't found mollie, that mollie is still someplace and we can get her home. >> reporter: despite hundreds of tips and interviews, investigators still don't know what happened to the university of iowa student and say they have nothing to back up tibbetts' comments but they've

recently updated their timeline, now saying the 20-year-old was last seen about 7:30 p.m. july 18th wearing a pink sports top, shorts and running shoes. >> it's frustrating for everybody. it's frustrating for the investigative team and for us, and it's particularly frustrating for the family and friends of mollie. >> reporter: authorities say she would often go jogging through the tiny town of brooklyn, taking different routes around the sprawling farms and towering cornfields. co-workers describing her as bubbly with an infectious personality. >> in my head i hear her voice and remember events that have happened and i just -- i want those back and i know they can come back. so i just need to keep pushing forward. >> reporter: the reward for information leading to an arrest now swelling beyond $270,000 as her anguished family can only wait. >> hang in there and miss you, pie. come home. >> mollie's father also says law enforcement approached the family asking if they knew her passwords or how to access her

accounts. investigators say they're digging into mollie's digital footprint including cell phone records and her fitbit. a tedious task that unfortunately can take a lot of time. >> my goodness, but the reward fund keeps growing as well. >> keeps growing. close to $300,000 now. we turn now to new concerns about flying in small planes after a series of deadly crashes including this one in southern california on sunday. all five people on board were killed when the private plane nose-dived into a parking lot and the ntsb and faa now investigating and gio benitez is here with the latest. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning. investigators are trying to figure out why the pilot declared an emergency before that crash. still no answers but one of the biggest clues, that cell phone video showing the plane falling straight down. this morning, the faa and ntsb are on the scene investigating what led to this moment, that small private plane falling right out of the sky and crashing nose first onto empty cars in the parking lot of this

california mall. >> but it got twirling, then all of a sudden it just stopped and that's when the bang hit. >> reporter: and now we know who was inside. five people, none of them surviving. most of them working for a real estate company in the bay area. one of them realtor floria hakimi posting this photo boarding that plane just two hours before the crash. the caption, flying out to l.a. >> the fact there were no injuries on the ground is a miracle in itself. >> reporter: the pilot scott shepard flying with his wife laura, declaring an emergency before the plane crashed. now experts are examining that video, probing whether the plane may have stalled and fallen vertically after running out of gas. >> we know that pure vertical means the pilot has totally lost control. when the fire crews reached the wreckage there was no fire to put out. so the investigators will be looking to see, did he actually run out of gas? >> reporter: commercial aviation has a very good safety record. one death in the united states in almost ten years.

but on small planes different story. 347 people dying in general aviation accidents last year alone. just this june, video captured a 17-year-old rolling out of a small plane after it crashed and burst into flames in detroit. his father and mother dying in the crash and over the weekend another small plane crashed in northern oklahoma killing all five people on board. but in california this morning, no definitive answer on what may have caused this terrible accident. >> whether it was a mechanical failure, whether the pilot lost control, we just don't know, but we do know from the video that that airplane was totally out of control in a vertical dive with a spin twist. >> reporter: and the faa has been working on improving general aviation safety. recently adding 40 safety enhancements and training, procedures and new technology. and in june the faa changed pilot testing to drill those

this morning, the 27 and 25-year-old officers are taking us inside that dramatic rescue captured on body cam. abc's steve osunsami has the story from atlanta. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, michael. three people had to be hospitalized after this accident, but because of the quick work of these atlanta police officers, no one was killed. the city of atlanta is sharing this policbody camera video of a daring rescue from early sunday morning. the young officers working the overnight shift are responding to a crashed car that's on fire with a passenger still trapped inside. >> come on, get out! >> reporter: 27-year-old charles tierney who hasn't even officially graduated from the police academy is the officer using the fire extinguisher and wearing the body camera recording it all. >> y'all got to get the door! >> reporter: working the other side of the car is officer brittany williams. you can't see her yet but the 25-year-old is in the back seat trying to pull the victim over

the front seat into the back and out through a door. >> the smoke was so much that i couldn't -- and it was hot. i couldn't get my hand under the dashboard to pull him out. so once i saw his pants leg started to smoke, i was like, listen, your leg is about to catch on fire. like, you need to pull it together and just give me whatever you have left. >> reporter: the man she was trying to move was nearly twice her size and was badly injured in the crash but she and the others got him out alive. >> pull him out. pull him out. pull him out! >> this was teamwork. it wasn't a single person's effort. >> we literally like give each other a hug at the end of it because we were just so overwhelmed, like when we finished we just hugged each other. >> it's definitely part of what we signed up for, i think, and the pride we got of helping another person and helping save his life is definitely an emotional experience we'll never forget. >> reporter: there are police rescues like this one that happen every day across america. police here say they still don't

we are back now with college graduation photos you have to see to believe. the young woman jumping into a swamp to pose with big tex. huge gator she calls her best friend. diane macedo, you have to explain this. >> i'll start this off with a very prominent do not try this at home. makenzie noland is graduating from texas a&m with a degree in wildlife. big highlight was her summer internship at a gator rescue. seemed only fitting when it came time for photos, her favorite gator had to be by her side. >> up, up. >> meet makenzie noland and her best friend big tex, the thousand-pound nearly 14-foot-long gator. >> i am not scared for my life out here. i know i'm in very good hands. >> reporter: the two formed a bond during her summer internship at gator country rescue but with that and her time at texas a&m coming to an end it seemed only natural the college senior would take her graduation photos with tex. >> i'm very happy to work with

ginger has the latest on the dangerous, dangerous situation. ginger. >> robin, the largest ever now, 283,000-plus acres burned. that's in the mendocino fire. those are the images that you're seeing right now. 30% of that fire is contained, and they are working so hard to get there. the holy fire, this is where the hikers were rescued, this one now more than 4,000 acres and none contained. so we've got a lot of problems going on because it's a hot, dry and unstable air mass that's popping those red flag warnings in washington state and in oregon, excessive heat from idaho down to southern california. and then that active pacific, if i don't have enough headlines out west, here's some more. four areas we're watching, now major hurricane hector, we just got the update in from the hurricane center, and it looks like it's at 130 mile per hour max sustained winds. still a category 4. it's a compact, super strong storm. it looks to slide just south of hawaii. tropical storm-force winds extend 105 miles away from the

center. if it stays there we won't see too much impact. 12 to 18-foot swells though, something to watch. if it nudges north, robin, it will be a way bigger deal. >> yeah, it will. all right, ginger, thanks. we move on now to that first big mueller trial. president trump's 2016 campaign chair paul manafort facing the prospect of life in prison and the star witness, manafort's longtime deputy rick gates is back on the stand today. i want to go back to cecilia vega who's tracking the case in virginia. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning, george. paul manafort stared down his former business partner when he was on the stand and rick gates barely looked paul manafort's way. this first day here in court was explosive. gates telling the court they spent years committing crimes together including not reporting more than a dozen offshore accounts. the prosecutors asking, did you commit any crimes with mr. manafort? yes, gates answered. how much did you fail to report over the years? several millions. manafort, of course, is facing charges he failed to report tens of millions of dollars he made working with ukrainian

politicians who had deep ties to russia and prosecutors say manafort hid that money in offshore accounts and falsified tax returns. gates pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to federal authorities and he is now a flipped witness who is working with the special counsel's legal team. yesterday on the stand he made this stunning admission. he says he embezzled million, several hundred thousand dollars from manafort while they worked together as political operatives and, george, that is what the defense will be focusing on when they get gates on the stand for cross-examination. they will be trying to discredit him, raise doubts about his credibility and that cross-examination is expected to happen later today. >> it will be key. cecilia, thanks very much. michael. >> thank you, george. it's a close animal encounter day. we had the graduation pictures with the alligator. now take a look at this. a paddleboarder joined by humpback whales off the coast of australia. he was following some dolphins during his morning paddle. then one of the huge humpbacks leapt onto the front of his board as you saw. others also coming to the surface for air.

of becca and also the people of america, of the country, everybody who has seen the show. so, how did you do that and what are you doing in that regard? i made a public apology on my instagram. i'm really sorry. i didn't mean to offend anybody but now i know the weight that a like holds on instagram and things like that, so we just addressed it, her and i. i know it went against things that she stood for before but she knows through the show and getting to know me that that's not my true character. she didn't let my instagram define who i am as a person and we're moving forward and trying to grow, be better people and i'm trying not to make those same mistakes again. >> becca, for you, when you saw it how did it affect your relationship? >> i mean, yeah, it was -- conversations that we've had since the very beginning, you know, once we got engaged we had those couple months together and right away, it was a conversation. it was an issue that we had to overcome but he has been very transparent throughout the entire thing and he never held anything back and he understands that it was offensive but he took full initiative right after that came out to apologize and

the state of florida over a 19-year period having heart attacks. their end point was survival and they looked at gender concordance. male doctor/male patient, female doctor/female patient and they found that women were more likely to survive if they were treated by a female physician. the group that did the worst is a female patient treated by a male physician. we need a lot more research, but these are raising a lot of eyebrows. >> so what do you think? >> i think medically this is not the first study to show a difference in clinical outcome with female physicians actually outperforming male doctors. we don't know why that is. maybe they are better communicators. it's unclear. socially, though, i think this is an incredibly slippery slope. we have to be very careful before we start labeling a profession, oh, this is a female profession. imagine the flip side, if we take professional chefs and say that's a male profession or

teachers, or pilots so, again, i think we need to be careful. at this point definitely not enough data to say that if you're sick in the hospital you should request the same physician as your gender. >> number one killer. >> women can present with different symptoms even though the chest discomfort is still the most common. they can have flulike symptoms, sleep issues but prevention is key. >> thank you so much. george. >> thank you. we move on to serena williams pulling back the curtain on her struggles as a new mom in a candid new post. adrienne bankert has the story. >> serena williams. >> reporter: serena williams' wins and losses have been very public. the tennis star now reveals her own private battle for a work/life balance. in a powerful and relatable instagram post she writes, last week was not easy for me. mostly i felt like i was not a good mom. the 23-time grand slam champion admits, i work a lot, i train and i'm trying to be the best athlete i can be. she says talking things through

to practicing medicine helping people in need to find the odds you are about to see that she is a real trail blazer. >> my name is dr. melissa m. freeman. i have been in the practice of internal medicine for more than 60 years. >> could i have her chart, please? >> and i am 92 years of age. >> now, there is a vicious rumor going around about you that you're 92 years old. can you confirm or deny that you are 92 years old and running us all ragged. >> i am proud to say that i have lived for 92 years and i'm still moving. >> reporter: not only is she moving, she's thriving and still practicing medicine. dr. freeman owns and operates this private practice in harlem. >> how are you? >> hello. >> reporter: a business she's run for more than 37 years. what's a typical day for you.

>> well, i start in the morning working in my drug clinic and i complete that and then i take transportation and come here to my office. >> reporter: now she doesn't shy away from public transportation. she embraces it traveling on the new york city subway at least twice a week. >> i'm a new yorker. travel by subway and i have to get somewhere and the subway is the best way to get there i'll board it and take it. >> you keep up with everybody. tackling the steps. >> well, that's the only way you can get to the subway is steps. >> reporter: dr. freeman's grandfather albert b. walker was born a slave in virginia. once the emancipation proclamation was signed he moved to new york to start his family in the late 1800s. what he must think that his granddaughter became a doctor. >> he was an amazing man, he had

four children and we all grew up in his house. >> education was important to him. >> my dad who came from rural alabama and did not have the opportunity to get the education that he wanted to get, but he emphasized the importance of getting a high school and a college education. >> reporter: dr. freeman splits her time at her private practice and a clinic treating people who are addicted to opioid drugs like heroin and oxycodone. >> you have been at the forefront of helping people fight that addiction that -- it's hard to put into words how it has gripped this nation. can you help people understand this. >> once addicted it's a very difficult problem to release and to see them straightening their lives up, it's a very moving thing. >> no plans to retire. >> not that i can see in the near future, no. >> what is your secret to not just your longevity, but your vitality? >> you do what you have to do.

you have to move on. as long as god gives you life and gives me strength, i have to keep doing it and he has been very, very merciful for me. [ applause ] >> our camera crew had a tough time keeping up with her. i mean, she sees up to 150 to 200 patients a year. they range in age from 20 to 100. her patients and they say that she gives them that personal touch and she stays very current with what's going on and she was recently honored at her alma mater, howard medical college where she received her degree and she just was recently honored there and she's very proud if she's touched so many lives. >> yeah, and she's -- oh, she's very active socially. she loves the opera. she's often there at practice till 9:00 at night and goes to the opera. >> i'm glad you brought us that. the stories that you see and hear in this city and now people are very aware of an amazing

woman. >> when people ask, who do you enjoy talking with? you know, we talk to politicians and entertainers and bachelors and bachelorettes. this is the type of people that we really enjoy having a conversation with. [ applause ] and i often say that when you get older, i remember that was years ago i did this -- we had hollywood people come in and made me an 80-year-old woman and the first time i felt invisible that we don't understand that as the generations are getting older that they still have worth and they still have vitality and we should recognize them. >> absolutely.
